After last year’s hugely successful and extremely cool 77 BoaDrum, brought to you by the Boredoms and Nike, there will be an 88 BoaDrum this year…in both Brooklyn and L.A.  In case you don’t know about it, 77BoaDrum was a serpentine coil of 77 drummers at 77 kits, all playing for over an hour and a half, conducted by Eye from Japanese band, the Boredoms.  It was set up last year, of course on 7/7/07, on Brooklyn Bridge Park between the Brooklyn Bridge and Manhattan Bridge.  It ended up being the surprise best live event in NYC in 2007.

This year, it is free again, but you need to get tickets in advance to assure admission.  Last year, was just a queue-up and hope you get in kinda thing, but it was also not widely known about.  So get your tickets here fast, if you wanna go!

It’s gonna be hard to beat the heat in NYC this weekend (over 90 and humid), but what you can’t beat is New York’s bevy of free live summer shows every summer!  And this weekend is especially off the charts.  Here’s what happening:

Celebrate Brooklyn & Wordless Music present DEERHOOF / METROPOLIS ENSEMBLE: THE RITE: REMIXED The mercurial experimentalists DEERHOOF, “the most creative band in indie rock today,” (LA Weekly) forge a distinctive sound out of sophisticated improvisation, fierce dissonance, and weirdly catchy melodies. They’re paired here, via the forward thinking Wordless Music Series, with a world premiere by METROPOLIS ENSEMBLE, led by Artistic Director/Conductor Andrew Cyr.  The Rite: Remixed is a collaboration with composers and live electronics producer/performers Ryan Francis, Leo Leite, and Ricardo Romaneiro, who re-conceptualize Stravinsky’s monumental The Rite of Spring through the lens of the latest sounds and technology from electronica. The work combines keyboards and laptops with huge percussion and brass ensembles to create a futuristic, rhythm-inspired sonic tableau.

Liars at the end of the ‘00s are a vastly different band than the one that helped usher in the then-trendy dance-punk of the early decade. After achieving hipster fame, they embraced an experimental approach that culminated in a dissonant, tuneless concept album. Last year’s self-titled effort, thankfully, rediscovered the art of the groove —hello, hooks!—while still incorporating elements of everything from dub to noise rock to prog. Of course, with a stint opening for Radiohead this spring and a new album on the way in August, all we can expect for the future is that expectations will definitely be subverted. With Team Robespierre.

KT and I went to a Dungen upcoming album listening party last night at a hip new space in the heart of the NYU Village…where I don’t typically hang out, as I’m a little old for the area…and had a great time!  The venue is called (le) poisson rouge, which is a beautiful space where we got to see Dungen mastermind, Gustav Ejstes on grand piano and vocals along with new drummer, Johan Holmegard, play a stripped down set of old and new tunes.  The sound was fantastic and the performace was absolutely beautiful.  And I got some great pics…

Oh yeah, and the new album, 4, is quite possibly their best yet.  It will definitely be up there with Ta Det Lugnt.  Pick it up when it drops in September!

Oh yeah #2…be sure to visit The Stoned Crow pub when you’re in the Village.  We had an absolutely great time there, didn’t feel old like you do at other Village bars, and had a great bartender who served our “Absinthe Ritual”.  Wow, that stuff fucks with your head!  Some after-hours pics at the end of the post…

Robert Plant ‘Falls Asleep’ When Asked About Led Zeppelin Reunion

What a fuckin’ douche!  Well, that’s exactly what I did when I heard he was extending his tour with Allison Kraus.  Yaaaaaawwwwwn!  Certainly no offense to Allison here, but there’s no way in hell I would pay $60-$100 to see Robert Plant and Allison Kraus live.  I just don’t care enough.  I would pay a lot to see a Zep reunion show though, and it sort of offends me that Mr. Plant would be so smug about something that millions of fans that have made him a millionaire many times over are on the edge of their seats about.

Well, I just sat back in my seat a little more and uncrossed my fingers.  There’s plenty of great music to see out there without the Zep reunion.  I get to see Dungen tonight in an intimate setting and preview their upcoming new album.  I saw them live a couple years ago and they completely brought the rock goods!  So who needs ya anyway, Bob?!…

…you went to a McCarren Park Pool Party and couldn’t believe all the stone-faced hipsters around you weren’t funky enough to dance to the opening band before the other opening band.

I just saw the Hold Steady at McCarren Park Pool a couple weeks ago, and they put on a really good show…although I’m pretty sure Paul wasn’t impressed.  His standards are immaculate.  I’m not sure if they makes any sense, but it really sounds right.  Anyway, the band was very fun on stage and the sound mix was perfect.  Chip and I only wish they would’ve played Southtown Girls!

The fellas are streaming their new album, Stay Positive, over at Imeem and it’s sounding great so far, as I’m listening now.  It also has the band talking about the songs before each song starts too, if you dig that kinda thing.  I don’t really, to be honest.  I kind of like the idea of an album just dropping out of space somehow, with no dissertations about overdubs and how ‘we had to get a lot of writing done backstage on tour’.  But most people probably like that, so it’s there.

I recommend you go check it out though…it’s free!  And you know what the Focus Factor commercial lady says about free, right?

Well I’ve been reading that Rothbury is the next Bonnaroo, and from what I’ve seen it does look like an amazingly well thought out music festival.  And the festie is super-green.  I dig that.  I may have to take my ass out there next year, although it may be tough if ‘The Phish’ is touring again by then!

So I just saw this recent video of Limp Bizkit’s Fred Durst on the Tom Green show and it is VERY interesting, to say the least.  Homeboy is Rip Van Winkling!

After sort of trashing his hometown of Detroit in a recent Rolling Stone article, Jack White pens a poem for the Motor City.  The only ‘trashing’ he did was saying that Detroit’s music scene was suffocating him.

Well, it looks from this story (and all the other recent talk) that Phish will be getting back together in the very near future.  Trey, Mike, and Jon all played together at this past weekend’s Rothbury festival in Michigan and here’s the meat of the report from Billboard (if you don’t wanna read it all)…

“Mike and I being two people who don’t shy away from trying new things, Anastasio introduced a pair of fresh tunes — “Backwards Down the Number Line” and “Alaska” — and further teased prospects of a reunion by saying, “If we could just find a drummer and a keyboard player somewhere…” But, he added, “you gotta start with the songs, and you guys can be our test audience.”

The new material went down a storm, but the biggest ovation came when Anastasio and Gordon finished the set with Phish’s “Chalkdust Torture.”…

…The real treat closed Gordon’s set, however, when Phish drummer Jon Fishman joined the ensemble for the Beatles’ “She Said, She Said,” sending the field into a state of dancing delirium.
 

So, as a hippie hipster human, I am excited to see that there are new songs and that it’s pretty much a done deal that I’ll being seeing Phish live in 2009.
