Heads with fond memories of Quannum all-star projects like 1999's Quannum Spectrum comp and 2000's "Blue Flames" single have something new to look out for: The Mighty Underdogs, a backpacker supergroup consisting of Lateef, Blackalicious' Gift of Gab, and Crown City Rockers producer Headnodic. Their independently-released late-2007 EP The Prelude initially flew in a bit under the radar until Definitive Jux picked them up, and their upcoming Droppin' Science Fiction-- featuring guest spots from MF DOOM, DJ Shadow, Mr. Lif and Akrobatik, Julian and Damian Marley, Lyrics Born, Casual, [deep breath] Chali 2Na, Raashan Ahmad, Tash, and Zion-- has a lot of collaborative weight behind it.

Not like "Want You Back" needs any, though. This late-album cut floats on a head-nod/quiet storm feel that triangulates Smokey Robinson, Boz Scaggs, and Allen Toussaint without sounding wedged too far back in the 1970s; it's to Headnodic's credit that the synth melodies in this are subtle and avoid the kind of Moog-for-Moog's-sake schtick that Bay-indie slow jams might otherwise be susceptible to. The love-jones lyricism is run through the more melodic phases of Lateef and Gab's flows, and they're just suave and smooth enough to make it kind of startling when Gab takes a turn for the melancholy and admits how much he lost by getting wrapped up in everything but his relationship.

In recent news, SCAR SYMMETRY recently checked in with the following update regarding member changes:

"Dear friends,

A few months ago we decided to part ways with Christian (vocals). The reasons are mainly the clichéd "business and creative differences" and lack of interpersonal chemistry. We came to a point where the band's existence was in jeopardy because of these differences, and the only way for us to continue with an inspired state of mind was to go through with this change in the line-up.

This should come as a total surprise to most of you, though you might have wondered why no gigs/tours have been announced since the release of Holographic Universe. The truth is, we have been offered several tours and one-off shows that everyone in the band wanted to do except for Christian. In a situation like that you get a lot of frustration and it was in everyone's best interest to go separate ways.

We started SCAR SYMMETRY just for the fun of it, never with the idea of becoming hugely successful or whatever. Now, three albums into our career, we've toured both Europe and North America, our latest CD made it to Billboard's Top Heatseekers' chart and we've enjoyed success way beyond our expectations. Needless to say, the situation for us as a band has changed since we started playing together in 2004 and the band is bigger than ever. We had the choice to either take a step back with Christian in the band or a step forward without him... We choose to go forward.

There comes a time to let go and move on, and that time is now. Scar Symmetry wishes Christian the best of luck with his future endeavors and salutes the good times we had with him in the band. We will announce the identity of Christian's replacement shortly."

HammerFall - Studio Blog Video

Swedish metallers HAMMERFALL have posted the first two video blogs/reports featuring behind-the-scenes footage from the recording sessions for their new album.

The as-yet-untitled CD will include an instrumental written by the group's latest addition, guitarist Pontus Norgren (THE POODLES, TALISMAN, GREAT KING RAT), and a song entitled "One of a Kind," which was written as a collaboration between HAMMERFALL guitarist Oscar Dronjak and IN FLAMES axeman Jesper Strömblad (who was a member of HAMMERFALL in the band's earliest incarnation).

Pontus Norgren joined HAMMERFALL as the replacement for Stefan Elmgren, who left the band in early April to focus on his new career as a pilot.

Every so often there comes along an artist who is everywhere. Omnipresent. Pervasive. Ubiquitous. A year ago, it was Rihanna. Right now, that artist is Katy Perry.

Her hit single �??I Kissed a Girl,�?? with its bi-curious lyrics and impossibly hummable hook, has put Katy on the lips (no pun intended) of, well, just about everybody. The song, lifted from her debut pop album One of the Boys, has reached #1 in the United States on The Billboard Hot 100, and top charts in Canada, the U.K. and elsewhere. People just LOVE this song.

But there are people who hate it, too. There are those who think the lyrics are an affront to her Christian upbringing, since she�??s the daughter of two pastors and began her recording career as a Christian artist. There are those who find the lyrics homophobic (along with those of her song, �??Ur So Gay�??). And there are those who don�??t think it was a song that should have gotten her pop-song-singing-butt placed on a prominent stage on this summer�??s Warped Tour.

Not that she cares. Why? Because the 23-year-old, guitar-slingin�??, Travis McCoy-datin�??, pop star is the �??it�?? girl of the moment.

She�??s confident, funny, sassy, and damn, if she�??s not talented, too. Her performance of �??I Kissed a Girl�?? brought down the house on FNMTV a few weeks back. And on that aforementioned Warped Tour, she�??s been turning young punks into pop converts all summer long.

As of late, she�??s back in her element, touring the country on the mtvU Video Music Awards Tour with Boys Like Girls, All Time Low and Metro Station. And that makes sense, too, because Katy is nominated for two 2008 MTV Video Music Awards! �??I Kissed a Girl�?? vaulted her into the Best Female Video category amidst clips from the likes of Mariah Carey, Rihanna, Britney Spears and Jordin Sparks.

The video also scored Katy Perry a Best New Artist nomination, where she�??s competing against Miley Cyrus, Taylor Swift, Jordin Sparks and Tokio Hotel. You like her, right? Directed by Mike Bruce, the video is set in a drive-in theater, which ends up being a perfect setting not only for the on-screen Dandys but also for some moviegoers to particularly um, enjoy themselves.

Jazz Meets Indie Rock On Aaron Parks�?? Blue Note Debut

Invisible Cinema, the striking Blue Note Records debut by Aaron Parks will be released Tuesday August 19, 2008, and already critics are raving. The album finds the 24-year old pianist and composer�??who is featured in the September issue of JazzTimes as a �??New Visionary�??�??exploring the common ground between his influences: from modern progressive jazz to indie rock and hip-hop. Parks represents a new generation of Jazz musicians, as is evidenced by the fact that he cites bands from Radiohead to Blonde Redhead among his major influences alongside Herbie Hancock, Brad Mehldau, and Terence Blanchard.

The album title and theme explore the relationship between the aural and the visual. Parks explains: "The title has different meanings. For one thing, invisible cinema is what music is, in a sense. You can't see it. But there's all this drama between the musicians, all these stories that can be told. Also, this album has a story line that I wouldn't spell out to anybody, because I want to leave it open to interpretation. But for me there's a narration in the sequence and song titles and everything."

Parks will be hitting the road this Fall in support of Invisible Cinema. In New York, Parks will be giving a free show at J&R MusicFest 2008 in City Hall Park (8/22), and will celebrate the album release with two nights at the Jazz Standard (9/10-11).
