Open call for Plymouth commissions

Plymouth City Council and Plymouth College of Art are working together to develop a series of commissions of temporary public artworks that will be sited in Central Park, Plymouth, between April and October.

They are looking to commission a South West-based artist/artist group for a project that will take place during August. For a piece of work that is live rather than an ‘object’ installed physically in the park.

The work could be a one off live intervention/performance/event/action or could build over a period of time. The project should have audience at its focus and consider how it will engage with the people who use the park.

The commission budget is £1,000. This budget must cover all artists’ costs (travel & accommodation as well as production/materials).

Send a proposal of no more then one A4 sheet that outlines your idea/project and a budget breakdown. Also include a short artist statement and CV, as well as four to six high-quality images that represent your idea and previous work well. Only accept digital submissions will be accepted.

Teignmouth’s Swanson’s Garage to re-open as an arts centre

Teignmouth Arts Advisory Group applied to Teignmouth District Council for the lease of Tomorrow’s Teignmouth Building (the old Swanson’s Garage in the town) to reopen it as an arts and community centre.

The reopening of Tomorrow’s Teignmouth as an Arts and Community Centre is now well on its way. It is possible that the building will be available from mid May as long as renovation and essential Health and Safety works are on schedule.

A spokesperson for TAAG told Arts+Culture: “The building has to be self-funding and to achieve this we are encouraging as many organisations as possible to make use of it and in return we will endeavour to keep the rates low so it is affordable.

“The rates will be £20 per unit per session and block booking of space and time slots will be negotiated according to requirements. The gallery space can be booked for all types of exhibitions but must be kept available as a public area throughout the day. The remaining spaces can be self-contained and not accessed by those not involved in the activity. The intention is to make the building lively and welcoming to everyone.”

There’s a a plan of spaces available as well as a list detailing times and suggesed uses for each area.

The spokesperson said: “This is not a definitive list and we are happy to discuss how your activity might be accommodated. TAAG wants to invite as many community groups as possible to take advantage of this facility so please fill in the form if you have an interest in using the building.”

The Feet First For Families is Devon folk dance for all ages

Wren Music is extending a dancing project to a new area of South Devon. The Feet First For Families project aims to introduce children, young people and families across Devon to folk dance in all its forms, such as social dance, step dancing and morris dancing.

In March 2010, Wren Music will be offering free folk dance sessions to schools and youth clubs throughout the South Dartmoor Learning Community, which stretches from Buckfastleigh to Moretonhampstead to Bovey Tracey. All of the dance sessions will be led by experienced community dance leaders and professional folk musicians.

These will be followed by a Family Folk Dance and workshop, where young people can bring along parents and family members and discover what fun you can have with dancing, whatever your age.

The Family Folk Dance will be held on Saturday, March 20 at St Andrews Church Hall, West Street, Ashburton, from 5.30pm to 7.30pm. All young people and their families are invited to come along and have a great time. No experience is necessary to join in the dances as all of they are all explained before each one. There will be live music too.

For those who want to explore folk dancing a little more, during the afternoon from 2.30pm to 4.30pm there will be a fun workshop where you can try out all sorts of smart moves and dance steps. The organisers suggest you bring a picnic tea.

Entry to the workshop and Family Folk Dance is only £3 per child, £5 for one child and one adult, or £10 per family of two adults and up to three children, or one adult and up to four children. For those who want to come just for the Family Folk Dance, entry is £2 per child or adult. Note that all adults will need to be accompanied by a young person. Children under eight years old must be accompanied by a responsible adult.

Advance booking is recommended to ensure your place. Reserve your place at admin@wrenmusic.co.uk or call 01837 53754 with names and ages of attenders and whether you will be coming for the whole event or just the dance.

Tall Stories at the Devon Guild of Craftsmen: motions and emotions in automata and storytelling exhibition

The exhibition is called Tall Stories, but it could equally go by the name Moving Stories, what with all the motions stimulating emotions at The Devon Guild of Craftsmen in Bovey Tracey with its new exploration of storytelling through automata.

Hot on the heels of the V&A’s Telling Tales and the Kinetica exhibit at the Exeter Phoenix, and as precursor to the forthcoming moving sculpture by Theo Janson, which will mosey into the Spacex in May, the Devon Guild’s Tall Stories has an exhibition of handcrafted toys for 16 leading craftspeople from throughout the UK.

South West artists are also well represented, with half of the exhibitors from the region.

According to Devon Guild curator Saffron Wynne: “Tall Stories is about the playfulness of craft. Although the artists have used different mechanics and materials – they’ve all created fantastic stories based on scenarios, animals and figures that will intrigue everyone, child or grown-up.”

And there’s loads to intrigue, involve and excite the kids, what with a quiz, a story competition, make your own toy activities and storytelling events during the school holiday.

On Tuesday, April 6 National Young Storyteller of the Year will be telling stories, Wednesday, April 14, there’s the Burglar Bill Puppet Show with Armchair Puppets.

Pick a theme competition for Thelma Hulbert 2010 Open exhibition!

Honiton’s Thelma Hulbert Gallery is inviting East Devon residents to come up with a theme for the gallery’s Open 2010 exhibition, to be held between Saturday, July 24 and Saturday, September 11.

It’s the first time the gallery has had a theme for its Open, which will celebrate the gallery’s re-launch after five months of refurbishment.

The competition, which ends o March 12, and all you have to do is come up with a theme that will inspire artists to enter the Open exhibition and email it to thelmahulbert@eastdevon.gov.uk or post it to Arts Development, East Devon District Council, Knowle, Sidmouth EX10 8HL marked ‘Open Theme’.

A prize will be given for the best suggestion.

The Thelma Hulbert Gallery holds an Open exhibition every other year. Both established and emerging artists are encouraged to enter. Full details will be available on the gallery website this spring. Don’t contact the gallery directly as it is currently closed for refurbishment

Alice in Wonderland meets Greek myth: Eurydice at the Drum Theatre, Plymouth

Eurydice at the Drum Theatre, Plymouth, is being heralded as Alice in Wonderland meets Greek myth, which is hardly surprising given the story-line. This is the European premiere of Sarah Ruhl’s re-telling of the Orpheus myth.

On her wedding day Eurydice finds herself in Hades with her father. Her betrothed Orpheus pursues her in the hope to bring her back to the land of the living, in what has been described as a heart-breaking take on a timeless tale of loss, grief and redemption.

Eurydice is a co-production between the Drum Theatre, ATC and The Young Vic and is directed by Bijan Sheibani (recently appointed Associate Director of the National Theatre). We worked with ATC and The Young Vic in 2007 with The Brothers Size and co-produced Bad Jazz with ATC in the same year.

Eurydice is with us until Saturday, March 13. Check out the Drum Theatre site for tickets and times.

Six commissions on offer on politics theme, from Exeter’s Double Elephant Print Workshop and Devon Records Office

Double Elephant Print Workshop and Devon Records Office are calling for submissions of interest from artists of all disciplines wishing to create artwork on the theme of “politics”. The work will be inspired by the resources available at Devon Records Office and must in part be realised through the medium of printmaking.

Deadline for submissions of interest is Friday, April 9

A total of six commissions are on offer, each worth up to £400, consisting of: £150 cash per artist or collaborative group of artists, and up to £250 worth of printmaking tuition/support provided by Double Elephant Print Workshop.

Unpretentious, proletarian and pocket-sized, new arts ezine Purge is launched

A new arts e-zine has been founded in Devon which aims to challenge the creative sector with a collective ragbag of comments, reviews and artwork.

Called Purge Zine, ‘it is a free, non-profit, unpretentious, proletarian, pocket-sized monthly, for people who are not easily spoon fed when it comes to the cultural industries!’

The first issue leads a piece on the ‘esoteric dullness’ of performance art, and also includes a condemnation of the Co-op’s baked goods and a review of the Museum of Everything, London.

The zine is calling for contributors for its monthly distributed pdf and its website.

Exeter-based artist Volkhardt Muller part of Spacex’s Random Acts of Art

Exeter-based artist Volkhardt Muller will be part of the Exeter Spacex’s Random Acts of Art, which runs from Saturday, March 6 to Saturday, May 1.

The two-month residency, which also includes Amy Feneck and Lady Lucy (who went to Plymouth University’s Exeter College of Art, back in the day) is intended to develop projects in response to the socially and historically rich context of Exeter’s West Quarter (where the gallery is located).

The artists will be facilitating collaborative encounters (as opposed to uncollaborative ones) and conversations with people who live in Fore Street and the surrounding area.

While the artists take up their residency (from now until Saturday, April 24) the Spacex will be closed, and will re-open (we’re sure) with a thrilling public exhibition and a week long series of artist-led events, taking place from Saturday, April 24 to Saturday, May 1.

We live in dangerous times – try Volkhardt Muller’s Cupboard Revolutions

You’ve got till the end of the month (Sunday, February 28 – that’s not long!) to catch Volkhardt Mueller’s Cupboard Revolutions at the Exeter Phoenix’s Gallery 333.

Offer up your suggestions for explosion and once a critical mass of coins is reached in the explosion chamber the scales swing and Action Man will blast ‘the crap out of the cupboard’.

Volkhardt says: “We do live in troublesome times. Exeter’s first cupboard revolutions facilitate your passions safely. Nominate something you want to blow up for the greater good and we might just do it for you. Leave your nominations at the box office and give us a good reason why you took the step.”
