Somerset Art Weeks are taking place again in September 2012, with a fortnight of open studios focusing on the artist as an individual.

Different from the art weeks event in 2011, the open studios event for 2012 is about drawing the open studios event back to its roots, looking at individual artists in their working environment.

It will focus on artists as individuals, how they make their work, their inspiration and creative processes and aims to support artists who want to work professionally and promote their creative business.

The event also encourages new and emerging talents, includes schools opening their doors; and artists working in new emerging practices, such as new-media and site-specific work. Somerset Art Weeks will also organise a curated programme, including special exhibitions and events.

If you are not a member of SAW and wish to take part in Somerset Art Weeks 2012, you will be required to complete a membership application form prior to registration.

Somerset Art Weeks will run from September 15 to 30

For further information about Somerset Art Weeks: Open Studios Event 2012 and to register online, visit the website, or telephone SAW Office on 01458 253800, Tuesday to Thursday between the hours of 9am and 3.30pm.
I truly feel I was born to be an artist. I knew at an early age being an artist would be my destiny and life long journey. Both of my parents had artistic talent, my mother was an oil and acrylic painter, and my father designed and made sterling silver jewelry. Thankfully, I received a tremendous amount of encouragement to pursue my art career from them.

I have been an artist for several years now. Four years ago, I developed my method of etching with different sized needles directly onto my digital nature photography. This process takes many hours and sometimes weeks to complete one piece, depending on the size of the work. It’s been both exciting and challenging. It takes an abundance of determination, love of the work, and patience.

I have a tremendous love and respect for nature. So in my etched nature photography, I enhance the colors, light, shadows and textures that appear in and around the subjects I’m photographing. The viewers will see that sometimes before etching, I enjoy manipulating my photos to look like eye catching paintings or pastels.

Violet in Sparkling Water © Lisa Garness Mallory

Since 2008 my art has been in several local Colorado art shows and exhibitions. And In 2011 one of my pieces was accepted into the 32nd International Peace Exhibition at the Nagasaki Art Museum in Nagasaki Japan. Only five artists from Colorado had work in this exhibit.

Then two of my etched photos were judged into the 19th Annual International Festival. Five Elements/One World at the Los Angeles California Municipal Art Gallery. Only 10 artists from Colorado had work accepted into this exhibit.

In 2010 I became sick with a life threatening illness called Graves’ Disease. It is a hyperthyroid illness. I am still recovering and the future of my health is unknown at this time. My doctor says it’s a miracle I’m alive! Half of the reason I fought to live was to continue my journey as an artist. My work is unique and cutting edge. I decided nothing will get in the way of my quest to continue my art journey. I’m determined my art will continue to evolve.

My life long dream is to become a well known artist. It gives me great pleasure when someone appreciates my work and purchases it for their home or business.

My work is in private collections in the US and Norway.

Young Plymouth Arts Centre are offering up their response to the British Art Show 7′s entry to and departure from the city with their Then There Was Sky… exhibition.

The title is taken randomly from HG Wells’ In The Days of the Comet novel, which inspired the title of British Art Show 7.

Random selection is a tactic used by the Young Plymouth Arts Centre group during their making process and as a focus for the exhibition.

Along with the exhibition there are a series of events planned, including: meeting other young curators and artist’s collectives from across the UK, working with artists and curators to discover what’s next for the art world and hosting public events that you can attend.

Then There Was Sky… is at the Plymouth Arts Centre from January 14 to February 26.

The artists taking part are Roxi Beville, Rhodri Brooks, Sammy Cowin, Joanna De Los Reyes, Ali Donkin, Bethie Helliwell, Daniel Jones, Hannah Jump, Ervin Martini, Hannah Pollard, Shona Ritchie, Katie Shaw, Daniella Snovakova, Sophie Troczynska, and Ana-Ciara Ulamoleka.

There is a launch part on Friday, January 13 at 7pm – entry free – with a performance by Hannah Pollard. Also, people are invited to bring along their own random mixed CD to play at the event.

The history and the graphic power of the Tart Card – the piece of paper stuck in phone booths to advertise certain ‘services’ – is explored in the titularly titled Tart Cards exhibition at Plymouth College of Art’s Viewpoint gallery.

The cards are now regarded as ‘accidental art’ and the show, curated by Caroline Archer (Reader in Typography at Birmingham Institute of Art & Design), is about designers being inspired by the genus of the tart card and applying it to a type face.

Since 2009 Caroline has been inviting designers, artists, illustrators and photographers from around the world to participate in the ‘type-tart project’ to maintain and raise the profile of London graphic arts library St Bride.

The project brief invited designers to anthropomorphize a typeface or a letter of the alphabet and to produce a card, using the tart card genre, to promote its ‘personality’ and ‘services’.

The exhibition opens with a public talk by Caroline on Wednesday, January 11 at 5pm at Plymouth College of Art.

• The exhibition is at the Viewpoint gallery, Plymouth College of Art from January 9 to January 27. Entry is free.

Backward Glance, an award-winning production from multi-story theatre company – they picked up a Creativity Award prize in Prague in 2009 – is at The Bike Shed Theatre, Exeter.

The production follows the investigation into the untimely death of a well-known writer, who is also an iconic female public figure.

The grieving husband offers up conflicting versions of what happened, and three women each have reasons for insisting the husband explains himself: a journalist smells a scandal; an investigator is determined to prove foul play; and a mourning mother looks for somewhere to lay the blame. But the husband is determined that what happened behind closed doors is nobody’s business but his own.

Backward Glance looks again at notions of myth and memory, love and loss and the shifting relationships between men and women as it weaves its story with diction, video imagery and physicality.

Now re-worked and updated in the light of a world that has changed, Backward Glance re-joins the repertoire of a company with renowned small-scale theatre credentials.

• Backward Glance is at The Bike Shed Theatre, Exeter, from January 24 to January 28. Tickets are £10 (£7 concessions), and available from The Bike Shed Theatre website or by calling the box office on 01392 434 169.

Guy Martin’s photographs of the Arab Spring of 2011 in Egypt and Libya will be on display in an exhibition at The Poly, Falmouth.

University College Falmouth’s School of Media & Performance present the exhibition and accompanying events entitled Shifting Sands, which includes a private view, talks and film screenings and runs from Monday, January 9 2012.

During the spring of 2011, Guy Martin travelled to Egypt and Libya to record the unfolding Arab Spring. On Wednesday, April 20, he was severely injured during a rocket attack by Gaddafi loyalists in the centre of Misrata. Two of Guy’s friends and colleagues were killed in the same attack, the co-director of Sundance-winning film Restrepo, Tim Hetherington and Pulitzer finalist Chris Hondros.

For the first time since the attack, and following his lengthy and continuing recovery, University College Falmouth is presenting an exhibition of the work produced by Guy from his time in Egypt and Libya prior to the attack. The photography frames a series of events highlighting the heavy price that can be paid by frontline photojournalists, in the cause of documenting the struggle for freedom. The event runs from Monday, January 9.

The event also marks the first anniversary of the Tunisian Revolution.

In remembrance of Tim Hetherington and Chris Hondros, proceeds from the week’s events will be directed to The Rory Peck Trust, the only organisation in the world dedicated to the safety and welfare of freelance newsgatherers and their families.

Guy is an independent documentary photographer represented by Panos Pictures and an Associate Lecturer in Press & Editorial Photography at University College Falmouth. continues to recover from his injuries at his family home in Falmouth, Cornwall, UK and is looking forward to working again in 2012. He was brought up in Falmouth and attended Penair School, Truro.

• Shifting Sands Exhibition runs at the Poly from Tuesday, January 10 – Saturday, January 14 between 10am-5pm. Entrance is free
