Creative Journey, an ongoing program where library patrons can participate in discussions and activities centered around creativity and personal growth, meets every Tuesday from 10:00 am- 12:00 noon in the Appleton Public Library Lower Level Meeting room (unless otherwise indicated).

August’s events are as follows:

Reading Group to Meet at Harmony Café August 3rd

The Downtown Book Club, a program sponsored by Appleton Public Library and The Harmony Café where readers can participate in discussions about popular and classic books while enjoying lunch and a coffee house atmosphere, will meet on Wednesday, August 3rd from 12:00-1:00 pm in Harmony Café’s 3^rd floor conference room.

This month the group will discuss the book The Little Stranger by Sarah Waters. This activity is free, and new participants are always welcome. Copies of the book may be reserved by calling the Appleton Public Library Information desk at 920-832-6177.

Appleton Public Library Hosts Garden Seminar August 6th

On Saturday August 6, 2011, Appleton Public Library will host the Outagamie County Master Gardeners. This month’s topic is Gardens of Northeast Wisconsin: a virtual tour of some of the areas lesser known hidden gems. Gardeners of all experience levels are welcome to join us at this informational session. The event will be held from 10:00 am until 11:30 am in the lower level meeting room. This seminar is free and open to the public.

Special Presentation on Living with Mental Illness Set for

July 21 at APL

NAMI-Fox Valley will present In Our Own Voice, Living with Mental Illness at Appleton Public Library’s lower level meeting room on Thursday, July 21, from 6:30-7:30 pm. This stigma-busting program informs the public about what it is like to live with a mental illness and still have a successful life after being diagnosed with depression, bi-polar disease or other mental illnesses. Vignettes Aglow, artwork by the Carla Bauer, will be on display at the Appleton Public Library’s first floor exhibit space from July 1-August 31, 2011. Carla is a graduate of Apostolic Bible Institute in St. Paul, Minnesota. She likes to use watercolor in natural settings of floral and plant life while adding a Scriptural phrase to her work. Spring Used Book Sale set for May 20-22

Appleton, WI – People looking for great summer reading to take to the cottage or to the beach need look no further than the Annual Spring Used Book Sale, sponsored by the Friends of Appleton Public Library. This year an additional day has been added for people to take advantage of the vast selection. This much anticipated event takes place Friday & Saturday and now Sunday, May 20 -22 at the Appleton Public Library, lower level, 225 N. Oneida St, downtown Appleton.

Sale Hours

Book Sales are a primary fundraiser for the Friends of Appleton Public Library.

The Friends Spring Used Book Sale is a book-lover’s dream with thousands of gently used hardcover and paperback books available at a fraction of their original cost. Check out the amazing selection of both fiction & non-fiction works, including popular titles, biographies, children’s books, videos, music and more at bargain prices! Most items cost $1.00, and even less for some paperbacks, children’s books and videos. There are great buys for teachers, parents, kids, teens, seniors or anyone looking for a great book. Summer entertainment has never been more affordable.

A special Friends of Appleton Public Library member’s only preview sale will be held Thursday, May 19, from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Individual FOAL membership is $15/year and helps support the needs of the Library. Non-members may join during the Thursday preview sale.

The library is still accepting donations of gently used books and DVDs for this sale through May 16^th. Children’s materials are particularly welcomed.

The Friends of Appleton Public Library is a non-profit, non-partisan organization that works to improve the Appleton Public Library’s services, providing an extra edge of excellence. Unique Film Screening and Discussion of Early Dr. Seuss Movie

The 5,000 Fingers of Dr. T

Dr. Seuss’s The 5,000 Fingers of Dr. T will be screened at the Appleton Public Library’s lower level meeting room on Thursday evening, May 12th from 6:00-8:00 pm. The screening is free and open to the public.

This special edition of Thursday Night @ the Movies will feature a screening and discussion of The 5,000 Fingers of Dr. T led by UW-Oshkosh German Professor Alan Lareau.

Lareau was involved in a 2 ½ year project to restore the once-lost soundtrack to Dr. Seuss’s first and only life-action film. He is a literature scholar and expert on Frederick Hollander, a renowned German composer who originally prepared the film’s soundtrack. Lareau considers this film to be “one of the most artistically revolutionary films of the 1950s” and the film enjoys a cult following. Registration is not required. Appleton Public Library Hosts Knitting Circle May 16th

Knitters of all experience levels are welcome—bring along a current project, learn a new stitch, or learn to knit from the cast-on. Teens and adults of all ages are welcome to join us the third Monday of each month from 6:30-8:00—drop in for half an hour, or stay the entire session! Our next session meets May 16th, 2011. This program is free and open to the public.

Writing Group to host publishing presentation at Appleton Public Library May 11^th

Writing Matters, a quarterly program where library patrons can participate in discussions, presentations, and activities centered around the art of writing, will meet on Wednesday May 11, 2011 from 1:30-3:00.

This quarter’s seminar is Playwriting with Doug Flaherty. Join us as UWO Professor Emeritus Doug Flaherty leads a seminar on the ins and outs of writing a play. Participants should bring paper and writing utensils as we will hopefully have time to begin writing a short play during the seminar. All experience levels are welcome. This program is free and open to the public.
