UNITED NATIONS (APP) – Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan once again raised the Kashmir issue during his address to the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), stating that the resolution of the Kashmir issue must be in accordance with UN resolutions.

Stating that the resolution of the Kashmir issue is indispensable for peace in South Asia, President Erdoğan urged that all disputes, including Kashmir, should be resolved under the UN Charter, while stressing meaningful dialogue for the resolution of India-Pakistan disputes.

Reflecting the aspirations of the Kashmiri people once again, the Turkish President lent strong support to Pakistan’s stance and active diplomacy, winning the hearts of Pakistanis with his forceful stance presented in the presence of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.

Reiterating Türkiye’s solidarity, President Erdoğan emphasized that Türkiye stands with its Kashmiri brothers today as always.

According to political analysts, the Turkish President presented the case of all oppressed nations, including Palestine, at the General Assembly, while highlighting the inability of the United Nations to play its role.

UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) – President Volodymyr Zelenskiy warned Moscow at the United Nations on Wednesday that ​Ukraine would strike back and make the coming winter deeply painful for Russia, if the two sides cannot agree a truce ‌on energy attacks before the cold sets in.

Ukraine and its allies are racing to secure limited agreements on energy infrastructure and Black Sea shipping before winter, fearing renewed Russian strikes on power and heating facilities, while Moscow continues to show little interest in wider negotiations to end the war.

“Ukrainians understand that this winter could be very harsh for us. But ​in response, we will have no choice but to make it painful for Russia too,” Zelenskiy told the UN General Assembly during the ​annual gathering of world leaders in New York.Though Russia has a far bigger arsenal of missiles which it has ⁠used to pound its enemy throughout the war, Ukraine has developed and used thousands of long-range drones to strike back at Russian warehouses, port infrastructure and ​oil refineries.

“That’s exactly why we say that de-escalation steps are needed before winter,” Zelenskiy said, calling for more robust diplomacy and noting the potential sway that ​Chinese President Xi Jinping could have on Russian President Vladimir Putin.China’s Xi, who did not attend the United Nations gathering, was due on Thursday to hold White House talks with US President Donald Trump, with whom Zelenskiy met on Tuesday to discuss a ceasefire on energy-related targets.

NO SIGN OF CHANGING RUSSIAN POSITION

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov held talks with ​US Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Wednesday, after which Rubio said Ukraine and Russia had both voiced an interest in a limited ceasefire involving ​grain and energy-related targets.

There was no immediate sign of any movement in the Russian position, however.

A Russian Foreign Ministry statement said that at the meeting it had “reaffirmed its unconditional ‌commitment to ⁠achieving the objectives of its special military operation,” the phrase that Moscow uses to describe its war in Ukraine.

Addressing the 15-member Security Council on the sidelines of the annual UN gathering of world leaders, Lavrov indicated that Moscow would not countenance any temporary cessation of hostilities.

“Europe, whatever it thinks, just wants to get a pause, and it wants to use it to pump the Kyiv regime with weapons,” he told a council session focused on the war in ​Ukraine.
Britain, France and Denmark’s top diplomats ​used their speeches to deliver strong ⁠condemnations of Russia’s war, warning variously of dangerous escalation and the spike in civilian deaths this summer.

‘WE ARE WAITING FOR RUSSIA’S RESPONSE’

Zelenskiy used his address to the General Assembly to single out Putin’s role in driving the war, repeatedly ​describing him derisively as “patient zero” and “the one from whom this idea of war keeps spreading further”.

“That is why ‘patient ​zero’ must be stopped. ⁠He must be denied the space to act – and the space to spread this evil further,” he said.

Zelenskiy told leaders at a “Crimean Platform” summit on the sidelines of the UN that Kyiv was ready for a maritime truce in the Black Sea based on proposals such as those put forward by Egypt, India and ⁠Turkey.

“We are waiting ​for Russia’s response. Ukraine is ready … to ensure safe shipping and food security in the ​Black Sea if Russia is ready to take real steps towards de-escalation too. We have to start somewhere,” he said.

The Foreign Office announced that Lieutenant General (retd) Nauman Mahmood has been designated as the inaugural Secretary General of the alliance formed through the Makkah Joint Defence Agreement.

Pursuant to a statement released by the Foreign Office spokesperson, Mahmood will direct the General Secretariat of the alliance, which is being established in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

The Foreign Office indicated that the General Secretariat, established under the Makkah Joint Defence Agreement, will function as the alliance’s primary administrative entity and will be overseen by the secretary general.

Mahmood’s appointment represents the establishment of the alliance’s principal administrative leadership and will entail managing the operations of its general secretariat from Riyadh.

This development comes subsequent to the recent execution of the Makkah Defence Agreement by Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, and Turkiye.The agreement establishes a framework for defence collaboration among the three nations.

In his capacity as the alliance’s first Secretary General, Mahmood will be tasked with directing its secretariat and facilitating the execution of its institutional objectives.

PERTH: Oil prices drifted lower on Wednesday as Saudi Arabia began restoring crude supply on a ​critical pipeline to the Red Sea and on hopes for a diplomatic solution to the US-Iran ‌war through talks at the UN in New York.

While US President Donald Trump warned on ​Tuesday that he could “annihilate” Iran, he also said his envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner had held productive ​talks with mediators of Iran to end the war.

“I think there’s a lot of ⁠momentum for them to make a deal,” Trump said.

Optimism around improved supply and a push to end the ​nearly seven-month conflict drove benchmark Brent down to close below $100 a barrel on Tuesday for the first time since ​September 8.

“The market is currently feeling more constructive about the global oil supply picture than it was a few weeks ago,” said Tim Waterer, chief analyst at KCM Trade.

“The meeting of US and Iranian delegations in New York has given traders a ​glimmer of hope … Despite the continued tough rhetoric, including threats of ‘annihilation,’ the market is choosing to price in ​the possibility of talks.”

On Tuesday, Saudi Arabia restarted operations on its East-West Pipeline to the Red Sea, three sources briefed on the ‌matter said, ⁠with signs of an increase in Middle Eastern oil flows.

Drone attacks, which Saudi Arabia has blamed on Iraqi militia, forced the kingdom to shut the pipeline on September 11, halting crude loadings at the kingdom’s Yanbu port.

Since the US-Israeli war on Iran disrupted oil flows from Saudi Arabia and its Gulf neighbours through the Strait ​of Hormuz, Riyadh has been ​using the pipeline to ⁠reroute around 4 million barrels per day — around 4% of global supply — to Yanbu.

Iraq, too, is increasing oil exports, its oil minister, Basim Mohammed, said on Tuesday.

The ​country is exporting more than 3 million bpd, he said, and expects to boost exports ​via Turkey ⁠to more than 600,000 bpd.

Provisional data from shiptracking firms Vortexa and Kpler pegged Iraqi crude exports in August at 2.3 million and 2.17 million bpd, respectively, up from July’s level but below February’s pre-war level of 3.7 million and 3.362 ⁠million bpd.

Adding ​to downward pressure on oil prices, industry data showed US crude inventories ​rose by 1.8 million barrels in the week to September 18, while analysts polled by Reuters had expected a decline.

Official weekly inventory figures from ​the US Energy Information Administration are due at 10:30 a.m. ET (1430 GMT).

During his address to the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) on Tuesday, United States President Donald Trump referred to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif as a “terrific man” while reiterating his involvement in resolving the Pakistan-India conflict in May 2025.

He noted that nearly all of these nations had sent him letters expressing gratitude for his contributions.

“The prime minister of Pakistan—a terrific man—stated that Donald Trump was instrumental in saving 30 million lives, and potentially significantly more,” he continued.
Tensions between India and Pakistan escalated in April 2025 following a deadly terror attack targeting tourists in occupied Kashmir, which was attributed to Islamabad without substantiation, a claim Pakistan categorically denied.

The nations engaged in a series of reciprocal military actions that concluded in May when Trump announced a ceasefire, an achievement he has frequently referenced in subsequent remarks.
