NBC News, Today Show and Peacock Productions Launch Expansion Drive

NBC News, the 'Today' Show and Peacock Productions have announced a new collaboration to extend the number-one 'Today' Show brand into new markets and platforms.

The announcement was made by Steve Capus, President of NBC News. 'Tomorrow' productions, a new division of Peacock Productions, will focus on 'Today'’s exclusive content and talent to develop brands and formats with the goal of creating new programming for broadcast, cable and syndication.

Marc Victor, senior producer of 'Today', has been named Senior Vice President of 'Tomorrow' Productions, overseeing the new venture. Victor will report to Sharon Scott, Executive Vice President of Peacock Productions and Jim Bell, Executive Producer of 'Today'.

An Emmy Award-winning producer, Victor has been senior producer of 'Today' since 2005, where he has overseen all aspects of the show’s third hour. In addition, Victor has served as the program’s head booking producer, running 'Today'’s booking unit. During Victor’s tenure at 'Today', the third hour topped, for the first time ever, both “Live with Regis and Kelly” and “The View” during the 2010-2011 season. Most recently, Victor created two successful 'Today' segments, “'Today'’s Professionals” and “Steals & Deals.”

Prior to joining 'Today', Victor held various posts within NBCUniversal, including executive producer of Bravo’s Blow Out and co-executive producer of NBCUniversal’s nationally syndicated show, Home Delivery. Victor also served as co-executive producer of Maury from 2002 to 2004.

'Tomorrow' Productions will be a division of NBC News’ Peacock Productions. Jim Bell is the Executive Producer of 'Today'. Sharon Scott is Executive Vice President of Peacock Productions.

AT&T to Provide Networking Services to NBC Olympics for London Games

AT&T will provide managed networking services for NBC Olympics, a division of the NBC Sports Group, during its coverage of the 2012 London Olympic Games from London, England, July 27 through August 12, 2012.

NBC's Olympics division will use a managed private networking solution from AT&T to help deliver its high-definition broadcast coverage of the 2012 London Olympic Games. AT&T's networking solution will create a connection between NBC's Olympics division's space in the International Broadcast Center (IBC) production facilities at the London Olympics and NBC's Olympics division's facilities in the U.S.

"Since the Atlanta Games in 1996, AT&T has continuously provided network bandwidth to help the NBC Olympics division transmit coverage of the Games in the United States," said Joe Lueckenhoff, senior vice president, AT&T Business and Home Solutions. Jorge Castaneda Joins NBC News and Telemundo as Latin American Policy Analyst

Telemundo and NBC News have jointly announced that Jorge Castañeda is joining both networks as Latin American Policy Analyst.

Castañeda begins his role in April 2012 and will contribute reports to Telemundo, NBC News and MSNBC shows and on-line platforms.

Castañeda was Foreign Minister of Mexico from 2000 to 2003, where he focused on diverse issues in U.S.-Mexican relations, including migration, trade, security, and narcotics control; joint diplomatic initiatives on the part of Latin American nations; and the promotion of Mexican economic and trade relations globally.

Castañeda is a member of the Board of Human Rights Watch, has authored numerous books, and is a regular columnist for the Mexican daily Reforma, the Spanish dialy El País, and TIME magazine. He also currently serves as a Global Distinguished Professor of Politics and Latin American and Caribbean Studies at New York University.

Born in Mexico City, Castañeda received undergraduate degrees from both Princeton University and Universite de Paris-I (Pantheon-Sorbonne), an M.A. from the Ecole Pratique de Hautes Etudes, and his Ph.D. in Economic History from the University of Paris 1.

Castañeda currently resides in Mexico City and New York.

NBC News Appoints Frank Kavilanz as VP of Strategy and Partnership

NBC News announced that Frank Kavilanz is joining the network as Vice President of Strategy and Partnership.

He will report to NBC News’ Chief Digital Officer, Vivian Schiller, and begins his role in mid-April. In this position, Kavilanz will develop the strategy for and execute business development activities including distribution initiatives, product development, digital rights and content partnerships. He will also concentrate on new digital and mobile business opportunities.

Kavilanz joins NBC News from the Disney/ABC Television Group, where he was the Executive Director of Business Development at ABC News Digital. In this role, Kavilanz was the executive in charge of online, video and mobile business development across ABCNews.com, GoodMorningAmerica.com, OTUSNews.com and ABC News on Yahoo.

Kavilanz’s additional previous roles at ABC News include Executive Director of Strategy & Finance. Prior to ABC News, Kavilanz was the Corporate Director of Interactive Strategy at Time Warner Cable.

Kavilanz received his MBA with a concentration in Finance and Strategy from Columbia Business School, and received his Bachelor of Science degree in Marketing from St. John’s University.

He currently resides in New York City with his wife, Parija Kavilanz, and daughter.

NBC Announces Gabe Gutierrez as Atlanta Based Correspondent

NBC News President Steve Capus has announced that Gabe Gutierrez is joining NBC News as a network correspondent based in Atlanta, GA. Starting mid-March, 2012, Gutierrez will report for all platforms of NBC News, including “Today,” “NBC Nightly News,” MSNBC, NBCLatino.com, and msnbc.com, as well as Telemundo.

Gutierrez joins NBC News from KHOU 11 News in Houston, Texas, where he worked as the station’s City Hall reporter. Prior to working in Houston, Gabe was a weekend morning anchor and reporter at WJRT-TV, the ABC station in Flint, Michigan. While at WJRT, he regularly produced and hosted the station’s public affairs program in addition to covering the state legislature and the auto industry. His first on-air job was at WBOY-TV, the NBC affiliate in Clarksburg, West Virginia., where he anchored weekend newscasts and reported during the week. While in college, Gutierrez interned at Telemundo in South Florida and at ABC News’ satellite feed in Chicago.

Gutierrez was named “Best Reporter” in 2009 by the Michigan Association of Broadcasters. He also won an Emmy for his investigation into what several banks called one of the largest mortgage schemes ever in the state. The Associated Press also honored him for breaking news coverage and investigative reporting.

Originally from Miami, Gutierrez graduated from Northwestern University's Medill School of Journalism with a double major in political science. He is a member of the National Association of Hispanic Journalists and Investigative Reporters and Editors.

TODAY launched the new Facebook® Pages design this morning, giving millions of people a new way to connect with the brand. The fresh functionality debuted to TODAY’s broadcast audience of 5 million and Facebook fan base of more than 1.55 million.

NBC to Air Super Tuesday Special

As the race for the Republican presidential nomination remains close and candidates prepare to compete in the most critical contests to date, NBC News announced plans for a one-hour primetime network special on Super Tuesday, March 6, 2012.

Brian Williams will anchor the Decision 2012 coverage with reporting and analysis from David Gregory, Chuck Todd, Andrea Mitchell, Savannah Guthrie, and correspondents in the field.

The Decision 2012 primary special will air live on the NBC broadcast network from 10pm ET – 11pm ET in the Eastern, Central, and Mountain time zones. In the Pacific time zone, it will air from 8pm PT – 9pm PT with full updates.

NBC News will also provide brief network updates between 7pm ET – 10pm ET as voting results dictate. “NBC Nightly News” will update the broadcast for later feeds throughout the evening.

Super Tuesday will feature Republican primaries or caucuses in eleven states – Alaska, Georgia, Idaho, Massachusetts, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Vermont, Virginia and Wyoming – with a total of 424 delegates at stake.

"Meet the Press" has now placed first in total viewers for 509 of the past 519 weeks (when everyone is at full coverage).

The NBC program attracted 2.854 million total viewers, +1% (+31,000) more than second place CBS’ 2.823 million viewers, a +27% advantage (+604,000) over third place ABC’s 2.250 million viewers, and a +173% (+1,809,000) lead over FOX News Sunday's 1.045 million viewers.

NBC Heavily Invests in Owned and Operated TV Stations

NBC Universal today announced a number of enhancements at its 10 owned television stations that are the result of a major investment the company is making to further strengthen the news gathering operations at the stations and ensure they have the resources necessary to effectively compete in their markets.

Valari Staab, President of the NBC Owned Television Stations, said the 10 stations are hiring more than 130 new people, producing more local news, launching new consumer and investigative units in five markets and making other enhancements.

“Our stations have a responsibility to deliver critical local news and information to viewers in their respective communities each and every day,” said Staab. “By making these strategic investments in our stations, we will ensure we meet our viewers’ high expectations.”

Staab, who joined NBCUniversal earlier this year after working at local television stations for 30 years, said the company is committed to making sure the stations are well-positioned to serve the needs of their individual communities. The investments, much of which will take place over the next several months, include:

• Hiring more than 130 people across all 10 stations, primarily in the news departments, including reporters, producers and photographers;

• Producing more than 1,200 additional hours of local news a year on the stations’ primary broadcast channels, including:

o An hour-long 5 PM newscast on WNBC/4 New York

o A 30-minute noon newscast on KNBC/4 Los Angeles

o A 30-minute noon newscast on WMAQ/5 Chicago

o Two 30-minute newscasts at 4:30 AM and 11:00 AM on WCAU/10 Philadelphia

o A 30-minute newscast at 11 AM on KNTV/11 Bay Area

o A 30-minute newscast at 11 AM on KXAS/5 Dallas-Fort Worth

o Two hours of news on Saturday and Sunday mornings on WTVJ/6 Miami

o A 30-minute noon newscast on KNSD/7 San Diego

The company has now increased local news programming at its owned stations by more than 2,200 hours since the Comcast/NBCUniversal transaction was approved.

• Establishing investigative and/or consumer units in five markets, including WRC/4 Washington, D.C.;

• Adding 15 new vehicles to the current fleet as well as upgrading 14 more vehicles with live news capabilities;

• Purchasing 20 new cameras and other new equipment;

• Building new sets and/or studios at four stations, including WNBC/4 New York;

• Adding or increasing the hours of helicopter coverage in several markets; and

• Restoring the promotions departments at all 10 stations.

“We want our stations to enterprise stories and truly produce differentiated, high quality local news content; and we want them to make it available to our audiences in as many ways as possible – on TV, online and on the go,” said Staab. “With these investments, our stations will be even better equipped to serve their markets.”

NBC Announces Brian Williams to Moderate Florida GOP Presidential Debate

NBC News, National Journal, The St. Petersburg Times, and the Florida Council of 100 have confirmed new details for their previously announced Republican presidential primary debate.

The jointly sponsored debate, first announced in April, will be held on Monday, January 23rd at the University of South Florida in Tampa and will air live on NBC. Brian Williams, anchor and managing editor of “NBC Nightly News” and “Rock Center,” will moderate the debate along with a panel of representatives from National Journal and the St. Petersburg Times.

This will be the first weekday primetime airing of a primary debate on a broadcast network in the 2012 election cycle. The event will also stream live on msnbc.com, nationaljournal.com, and tampabay.com. Telemundo will broadcast the debate in its entirety with simultaneous Spanish-language translation.

This will be the third primary debate hosted by NBC News and the second NBC debate to air on the broadcast network. The NBC News Facebook Debate on “Meet the Press,” moderated by David Gregory, will take place the Sunday before the New Hampshire primary and air as a special edition of “Meet the Press.”

NBC News Names Tom Bettag as Segment Producer on 'Rock Center'

NBC News has announced that Tom Bettag has joined “Rock Center with Brian Williams” as a segment producer.

During his distinguished career, Bettag has served as Executive Producer at CBS News, ABC News, and CNN, but at NBC News, Bettag will return to his journalistic roots, producing top-notch pieces for "Rock Center with Brian Williams." The announcement was made today by Steve Capus, President of NBC News.

“Tom Bettag has one of the best reputations in television news,” said Rome Hartman, executive producer. “The fact that he has decided to join the 'Rock Center' producing corps is another indication of the incredible talent we’re attracting, both on camera and behind the scenes.”

"You can't work in network television news without knowing the work -- or the legacy of Tom Bettag,” said Brian Williams. “He was present at the creation of many of the production techniques we use today, and some of the titanic stories of the last few decades. He has worked with giants, always with modesty. We are flattered that he wants to be a part of us."

Most recently, Bettag was the senior executive producer of CNN’s “State of the Union with Candy Crowley” and “Reliable Sources.” In Bettag’s more than four decades in journalism, he has also served as executive producer of “CBS Evening News” with Dan Rather, of ABC’s “Nightline” with Ted Koppel, and of “Koppel on Discovery” on the Discovery Channel.

Throughout his career, Bettag has earned six duPont-Columbia University Silver Baton Awards, three Overseas Press Club Awards and 30 Emmy Awards. In 2004, Bettag was honored with Quinnipiac University’s Fred Friendly Award, which recognizes those who have shown courage and forthrightness in preserving the rights of the First Amendment.

NBC News Names Natalie Morales as Rock Center Correspondent

NBC News has announced that Natalie Morales, the news anchor of “TODAY” and co-host of the third hour, has signed on as a correspondent on “Rock Center with Brian Williams.”

Morales joins anchor and managing editor, Brian Williams and his all-star cast of correspondents Harry Smith, Kate Snow, Ted Koppel, Meredith Vieira, Richard Engel, Dr. Nancy Snyderman, Matt Lauer and Ann Curry. The announcement was made today by Steve Capus, President of NBC News.

“A familiar face at NBC News, Natalie brings a breadth of experience to ‘Rock Center with Brian Williams,’” said Capus. “Not only has she been in the trenches with her award-winning reporting, she brings curiosity and compassion to the stories that she tells, and we’re thrilled to have her on board with this new broadcast.”

Prior to “TODAY,” Morales was a national correspondent for “NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams” and “Dateline;” she was also an anchor at MSNBC from 2002-2006 where she covered major world events including the aftermath of the 9/11 attacks and the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq.

While at NBC News, Morales has reported on and contributed to several major breaking news stories including the Chilean miner rescue — coverage that was seen worldwide and recognized with a 2010 National Headliner Award, the 2009 presidential inauguration; the Southern California wildfires; the Minneapolis bridge collapse; Hurricane Katrina and the recovery efforts; the Tsunami disaster; the death of Pope John Paul II; the 2004 presidential election; the 2010, 2006 and 2004 Olympics; and the Columbia Shuttle explosion. And in 2010 and 2011, she was awarded a Daytime Emmy award as part of “TODAY’s” recognition as the best morning news program.

Morales began her career in broadcast journalism in 1998 at News 12 - The Bronx, where she shot, produced and edited her own reports. And, she was the morning co-anchor and correspondent at NBC's WVIT in Hartford, Connecticut from 1999 - 2002.

Morales, who speaks Spanish and Portuguese, was born in Taiwan and spent much of the first 18 years of her life living overseas in Panama, Brazil and Spain as an Air Force brat. She holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Rutgers University, New Jersey, with dual majors in journalism and Latin American studies. She was a Phi Beta Kappa and graduated Summa Cum Laude. Morales currently resides in New Jersey with her husband and two sons.

Broadcast live from the historic Studio 3B in Rockefeller Center, the weekly, hour-long newsmagazine will premiere on Monday, October 31 at 10pm and will be built around the week’s most provocative events, compelling coverage, and newsmaker interviews. In this new venue, Williams and NBC’s trusted global news division will take viewers deeper into the world’s most talked-about stories -- and raise the curtain on stories begging to be told.

In addition to the weekly primetime broadcast, there will be constantly evolving digital editions of “Rock Center with Brian Williams” available online at RockCenterNBC.com and via the show’s iPad app.

New Hampshire Union Leader Joins NBC News Facebook Debate Coverage

NBC News has announced that the New Hampshire Union Leader has joined as a local partner for the network’s next Republican presidential primary debate.

The NBC News Facebook Debate on “Meet the Press,” moderated by David Gregory, will take place on the Sunday before the New Hampshire primary in the historic Chubb Theatre at the Capitol Center for the Arts in Concord, New Hampshire. It will air on the NBC network as a special edition of “Meet the Press,” and will stream live on Facebook. The debate will also air on MSNBC and NECN.

“New Hampshire voters trust the Union Leader for the news that hits closest to home,” said Mark Lukasiewicz, Senior Vice President of NBC News Specials. “We’re thrilled that this influential journalistic institution has signed on to what will certainly be a historic debate.”

Ted Koppel Joins Rock Center Team as Special Correspondent

NBC News has announced that Ted Koppel, the legendary and highly respected broadcast journalist, has joined “Rock Center with Brian Williams” as a special correspondent.

Koppel will bring his award-winning reporting to the new broadcast, led by Brian Williams, and premiering on Monday, October 31 at 10pm.

Koppel, whose broadcasting career spans half a century, has been honored with every major professional recognition. He contributes to NPR’s “Talk of the Nation” and is best known for his role as anchor and managing editor of ABC News' “Nightline” where his interviews and reporting touched every major news story over 25 years, making him the longest-serving news anchor in network history. He left “Nightline” in November 2005 and was named managing editor of the Discovery Channel, anchoring and producing long-form programming that examined major global events.

He began his broadcasting career as an NBC News Page and then took a job at WMCA Radio, New York. In 1963, Koppel joined ABC Radio News as a correspondent for its daily Flair Reports program, where one of his first assignments was to cover the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. He moved to television in 1966 when reporting on the Vietnam War. During his 42 years at ABC News, Koppel also worked as anchor of “The ABC Saturday Night News,” chief diplomatic correspondent, Vietnam War correspondent and Hong Kong bureau chief. He has also had a major reporting role in every presidential campaign since 1964.

Koppel has won every major broadcasting industry honor, including the Edward R. Murrow Lifetime Achievement Award, 41 Emmy Awards, eight George Foster Peabody Awards, ten duPont-Columbia Awards, ten Overseas Press Club Awards, two George Polk Awards and two Sigma Delta Chi Awards, the highest honor bestowed for public service by the Society of Professional Journalists. Among his other tributes are the first Gold Baton in the history of the duPont-Columbia Awards for “Nightline's” weeklong series originating from South Africa, the Gabriel Personal Achievement Award from the National Catholic Association of Broadcasters and Communicators and selection as a Chevalier de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres from the Republic of France. He has received more than 20 honorary degrees from universities in the United States.

A native of Lancashire, England, Koppel moved to the United States with his parents when he was 13 years old and became a U.S. citizen in 1963. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree from Syracuse University and a master's degree in mass communications research and political science from Stanford University.

He is married to Grace Anne Dorney of New York City. They live in Maryland, and have four children and seven grandchildren.
