Leandro Mendoza dies at age 67

Former Executive and Department of Transportation and Communications (DOTC) secretary Leandro Mendoza passed away on Monday Morning, October 7, 2013. He was 67-years-old.

Batangas 4th District Representative Mark Llandro Mendoza announced that his father died at 1:30 a.m. inside their ancestral house in Sitio Pag-Asa, Barangay Poblacion, San Juan, Batangas.

Congressman Mendoza said that the elder Mendoza suffering another stroke. "Biglaan lang. He was in his rehabilitation when he suffered another stroke," Rep. Mendoza explained.

The ex-PNP Chief is survived by his wife Soledad and six children, Maria Lea Mendoza-Apita, Michael Mendoza, Maria Leilani Mendoza-Viloria, Mark Llandro Mendoza, Matthew Mendoza and Lean Mendoza.

Last March 17, 2012, Mendoza suffered a heart attack while celebrating his birthday at a resort in San Juan, Batangas. He was airlifted to St. Luke's Medical Center in Bonifacio Global City and was able to survived the heart attack.

Rep. Mendoza said his father's remains will lie at the Heritage Park in Taguig City. Internment details will be announced by the family at a later time.

2013 Bar Exams: 5,593 Law Graduates took 112th Examinations

The October 2013 Bar examinations started at the University of Santo Tomas on Sunday, October 6. It will be a four Sunday examinations for a total of 5,593 law graduates.

Reports say that examinees came as far as Mindanao, Iloilo and Isabela to take the annual Bar exams. This years examinations is the 112th Bar exams.

Examinees took the Political Law exam in the morning and Labor Law exam in the afternoon.

Manila Police District provided a tight security and deployed 250 cops within the perimeter of the university.

Police Chief Superintendent Isagani Ganabe explained that "Ang binabantayan namin talaga dito yung last day dahil sa mga welcomers, pero ganun din ang first day."

Petronas Malaysia to build $35B LNG Plant in Canada

Malaysian national oil company, Petronas, will be spending $35 billion for its liquid natural gas (LNG) project in Canada.

Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak announced the Petronas project during a joint conference with Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper on Sunday, October 6, 2013.

Almost a year ago, Ottawa tried to block the Petronas $5.5 billion purchase of Canadia's Progress Energy Resources. However, Harper reversed the decision two months later citing Canada's openness to foreign investment.

According to Najib, Petronas will shell out about CAD $36 billion to build "all the facilities upstream including investment in a pipeline." Najib considers the latest Petronas investment as the "largest foreign direct investment in Canada by any country".

Malaysia's Prime Minister added that "gargantuan investment will be mutually beneficial because it will open up Canadian energy to new markets, principally East Asia."

In a statement, Harper assures its citizens that the country's total FDI "has continued to increase over the past year and has increased very rapidly. I'm told it's up by almost a third".

Harper explained that they "view the Petronas investments very positively and all the indications I have is that Petronas is looking at further investments. Obviously our policy involves the use of discretion when it comes to state-owned enterprise."

Angel Locsin will play as Darna on the big screen. The latest Angel Locsin role was confirmed by Star Cinema managing director Malou Santos in a Manila Bulletin report published on Sunday, October 6, 2013.

In 2005, Locsin also played Darna in a GMA Network television series. Marian Rivera also played the same role in 2009, also in GMA 7.

This year, ABS-CBN had acquired exclusive rights to the Mars Ravelo creation and will start filming in 2014.

Santos revealed that "For Darna, we’re already done with the story of her past. We’re already brainstorming. We’re targeting next year for filming. So tuloy-tuloy na ‘yun." She explained that Star Cinema is aiming to showcase special effects that viewers has never witnessed from previous movies and television series.

According to Santos, it is only Reality productions who has the capacity to provide the effects that they want.

Locsin meanwhile revealed her desire to play the role of Darna again. She said that “Ako kasi si Darna, feeling ko talaga eh. Kahit hindi ibigay ulit sa akin ang bato, part na siya ng pagkatao ko. 'Yung magkaroon ako ng opportunity at nagawa ko naman nang maayos 'yung duty ko bilang si Darna, malaking bagay na 'yun sa akin. Pero kung magbabalik ako, okay lang."

Sebastian Vettel of Red Bull Racing-Renault survived two safety cars to win the 2013 Formula 1 Korean Grand Prix in Yeongam on Sunday, October 6, 2013.

Joining Vettel in the podium are Lotus-Renault drivers Kimi Raikkonen in second place and Romain Grosjean in third place.

On top of the F1 Driver's Championship, Vettel now leads with 272 points. Fernando Alonso is in second place with 195 points and Raikkonen in third with 167.

In the Constructor's standings, Red Bull Racing-Renault is way ahead of the pack with 402 points. Ferrari is in second place with 284 points, followed by Mercedes with 283 in third.

It was a disastrous race again for Vettel's teammate Mark Webber. The car of Webber caught fire during the 37th lap.

Vettel started the race in pole position. He also registered the fastest lap at Yeongam with 1:48.574

A team of researchers are insisting that Bigfoot really exists. The group, led by Melba Ketchum, presented a Bigfoot footage during a press conference in Dallas on Tuesday, October 1, 2013.

Ketchum, a veterinarian, leads a group of researchers under The Sasquatch Genome Project. Her team was tasked to prove the existence of Bigfoot, a legendary tall and hairy creature.

Ketchum explained how she would prove the existence of Bigfoot. According to her, "Rather than spend another five years just trying to find a journal to publish and hoping that decent, open-minded reviewers would be chosen, we acquired the rights to this journal and renamed it so we would not lose the passing peer reviews that are expected by the public and the scientific community."

Will they ever prove Bigfoot's existence? Or are they wasting their time of proving something that is not really there?

A Digitimes report explained the Redmond company's strategy,

Microsoft’s current plight is due to its late entry to the mobile market, high product prices, and weak ecosystem compared to its competitors. Microsoft’s strategy of developing its tablet operating system using its PC operating system as the base, is the main problem preventing Windows-based tablets becoming standardized.

Pre-orders for the new line of Surface tablets are now available. Surface Pro prices starts at $799. Reports say that first generation Surface RT will still be available at a drop-down price of $350.

University of Santo Tomas (UST) Growling Tigers drew first blood with a hairline win over the De La Salle University (DLSU) Green Archers, 73-72, during Game 1 of the best-of-three UAAP Season 76 Finals series at the Araneta Coliseum on Wednesday, October 2, 2013.

Kevin Ferrer led all scorers with 20 points. Karim Abdul added 19 points and 12 rebounds. Jeric Teng had 17 points and seven rebounds for UST.

UST carried the momentum of their inspiring win against National University (NU) during the Final Four. The Tigers marched into the championship against the Archers after winning twice against NU.

The Growling Tigers lost a double-digit lead early in the game but was able to recover in time and come to within a win away from their first UAAP championship since 2006.

It was a well-attended game as 20,000 fans trooped to the SMART Araneta Coliseum to witness the UAAP Finals.

Everyone was in shocked after UST beat DLSU. UST head coach Pido Jarencio said, "Ako rin, na-shock ako! Panalo pala kami!"

At the start of the fourth quarter, La Salle was still leading 54-50.

Jeric Teng, however, took charged in the final quarter by getting five straight points to regain the lead for UST, 55-54.

With a little over two minutes to go, Karim Abdul coolly drained two charities to make it 68-63 in favor of UST, only to see La Salle's Jason Perkins drain a triple that made it a one-possession game, 66-68, with just 1:58 left.

After a split at the line by Jeron Teng made it a one-point game, UST's Kevin Ferrer drilled a booming triple from the top of the key that made it a four-point game, 73-69, with just 41 seconds left.

Jeron however, completed a three-point play immediately after to make it a one-point game anew, 72-73, with still 29.1 seconds left in the game.

But in the next play, Aljon Mariano lost the ball after an inbound pass from Ferrer. That gave La Salle a chance to win the game.

But Almond Vosotros missed an open three pointer and Abdul blocked LA Revilla's putback as time expires.

Game 2 of the UAAP Season 76 Finals will be on Saturday, October 5. The championship game will be played at the Araneta Coliseum and will be live on ABS-CBN's Channel 2.

Climbing and walking through the Great Wall of China is hard and tiring. However, Justin Bieber found a way to make it easier for him to traverse one of the World's Wonders.

The 19-year-old pop star reportedly asked his bodyguards to carry him on their shoulders during their tour of the Great Wall.

In several photos posted by fans on Instagram, Bieber seemed to look like a modern version of Chinese emperors being carried for transport.

Earlier, Bieber roamed around Beijing using his skateboard while letting his bodyguards run behind him.

Bieber fanatics justified the pop star's behavior with one @bieberandsupras tweeting "only Justin would have somebody carry him up the Great Wall of China, aw my baby boy."

Mitoy Yonting wins first The Voice PH

Mitoy Yonting proved that the very first The Voice of the Philippines title belongs to him, as he claimed earlier in the competition. He emerged as the grand winner during The Voice PH Finale Showdown at the Newport Performing Arts Theater of Resorts World Manila in Pasay City on Sunday, September 29, 2013.

Joining Mitoy of Team Lea in the Final Showdown is Klarisse de Guzman of Team Sarah, first runner-up winner. The other Grand Finalist of The Voice PH include Team Apl's Janice Javier and Team Bamboo's Myk Perez.

Mitoy will receive P2 million and a car for winning The Voice of the Philippines.

During the opening number of the Finale night, Klarisse de Guzman of Team Sarah was the first to render a song with her coach, Sarah Geronimo and Robert Sena. The trio sang I Hope You Don't Mind.

Francisco "Bamboo" Manalac danced the Waltz as he sings Morning Rose with Myk who played the guitar again.

Janice sung Himig ng Pag-ibig with Lolota Carbon and rap The Time of My Life with her coach Apl.de.ap.

Mitoy, Lea Salonga and Vice Ganda provided an epic rendition of Bonnie Tyler's Total Eclipse of the Heart that surely brought the house down. The fans inside Resorts World made a standing ovation after Vice Ganda planted a kiss on Mitoy's lips.

During their individual performance, Klarisse rendered I'm Every Woman, Myk delivered Everything, Janice sung We Found Love and Mitoy comically rendered Leaving on a Jet plane.

Shane Filan, former lead vocalist of international singing boy band Westlife was a special guest during the Grand Finals of The Voice of the Philippines. Filan sang Fool Again with Klarisse and Janice and Uptown Girl with Myk and Mitoy.

It's DLSU vs. UST and Teng vs. Teng for the UAAP Season 76 Finals.

The 2013 UAAP Senior Men's Basketball Finals will feature De La Salle University (DLSU) Green Archers against the University of Santo Tomas (UST) Growling Tigers starting on Wednesday, October 2, 2013.

UST took the last ticket to the UAAP Season 76 Finals, after a hard-earned 76-69 victory over the National University Bulldogs at the Mall of Asia Arena on Saturday, September 28.

DLSU earned the first Men's Senior Basketball Finals seat after beating the Far Eastern University Tamaraws last Wednesday, September 25.

The Archers vs Tigers match-up will pit DLSL's Jeron Teng against his elder brother, UST's Jeric Allen Teng. The Teng brothers are siblings of former PBA player Alvin Teng.

A lot of Kapamilya televiewers turned to social media to air their disgust over the delay of showing the teleserye. Several advertisements were shown until the network made the pronouncement that the September 27 episode was completely cancelled.

A leaked photo of a second-generation iPad mini with Retina display and golden color is going viral over the internet today, September 27, 2013.

The highly anticipated Apple tablet is expected to be announced in October 2013.

Unconfirmed photos from ZOL has been making the rounds on social networking sites. The CBS Interactive owned company first published the golden Retina iPad Mini on Friday.

One photo showed the presence of a Touch ID fingerprint scanner similar to the iPhone 5S.

Space Gray is another featured color of the new iPad mini.

With less than a month from its official release, Apple followed up iOS 7 with a security patch. The Cupertino technology company has just released its latest update, iOS 7.0.2.

According to Apple, iOS 7.0.2 fixes bugs that can allow anyone to bypass the Lock screen passcode. Secondly, the latest iOS updates let's users use a Greek keyboard for a passcode entry.

Suspension of Classes on September 23, 2013

Classes in elementary and high school levels in Cavite and all levels in Laguna are suspended on Monday, September 23, 2013.

Local Government authorities made their announcement on Twitter, Sunday night.

According to Cavite Governor Revilla and Laguna Governor ER Ejercito, the basis of class suspension is due to PAGASA warning of possible flash floods in their province.

Based on the latest PAGASA weather forecast, Yellow Rainfall Advisory is in effect over Metro Manila, Rizal, Bulacan, Cavite, Bataan and portions of Zambales, Pampanga, Batangas, and Laguna as of 6:05 pm on Sunday.

PAGASA weather bulletin indicated that there will be moderate to occasionally heavy rains that may cause flooding in low-lying areas.

The Voice Philippines Grand Finalists: Mitoy, Myk, Klarisse, Janice

The four Grand Finalists for The Voice of the Philippines Grand Finale were announced on Sunday, September 22, 2013.

All Grand Finalists were voted through text from among the #VoicePHTop8 semi-finalists.

Lea Salonga's team will be represented in the Grand Finale by Mitoy. He received 108.7 points against Radha's 91.22 points. Mitoy became the first Grand Finalist of The Voice of the Philippines.

Myk received a total of 103.08 points to earn the right to represent Team Kawayan in the Grand Finale. Paolo got 96.92 points.

Klarisse dominated Team Sarah with 180 points. She won over Morisette.

Finally, Team Apl's Janice won over Thor. Janice received 112.85 points while Thor had 87.15.

850 Snakes Found in Shirley Home

About 850 snakes were found inside the home of an animal control officer in Shirley, New York on Thursday, September 19, 2013.

Authorities say that along with the 850 snakes found in two garage of Richard Parinello were two 6-foot Burmese pythons.

The 44-year-old Brookhaven Town employee is being accused of selling the snakes.

Keeping Burmese pythons is illegal in the state of New York.

According to Suffolk County SPCA Chief Roy Gross, "There is a reason why Burmese pythons are illegal."

Last month, two young boys, Noah and Connor Barthe, in New Brunswick, Canada were reportedly fell victim by an African rock python.

BBM (Blackberry Messenger) app download for iOS 7 and Android mobile devices like iPhone and Samsung Galaxy was made available for a very short period of time. Or was there a mistake of letting iOS and Android users download the BBM app?

According to reports, Blackberry halted the availability of free BBM app in iTunes Store and Google Play.

During its brief release, BBM app was downloaded by about 1.1 million Android users.

iOS users in New Zealand reportedly got the chance of downloading the messaging service of Blackberry.

Blackberry's Luke Reimer explained that "As soon as we are able, we will begin a staggered country roll-out of BBM for Android and continue the roll-out of BBM for iPhone. … These issues have not impacted BBM service for BlackBerry."

NU vs UST. Who will get the first Finals berth of the UAAP Season 76?

The Season 76 UAAP Finals is a win away for the National University (NU) Bulldogs. NU will try to get the first Finals berth versus the University of Santo Tomas (UST) Growling Tigers on Sunday afternoon, September 22, 2013.

The National University Bulldogs are aiming to make the finals of the UAAP for the first time since 1970 when they take on the University of Santo Tomas Growling Tigers in the Final Four Sunday at the Araneta Coliseum.

NU topped the elimination round with a 10-4 record and earned a twice-to-beat advantage against UST, who placed fourth in the Final Four standings. The Bulldogs were actually tied with Far Eastern University (FEU) Tamaraws and the De La Salle University (DLSU) Green Archers. They secured the top spot due to a higher quotient.

The Bulldogs is expected to rely heavily on two-time UAAP Most Valuable Player Bobby Ray Parks. NU head coach Eric Altamirano said that his team "have a great shot of going to the Finals, so we just want to stay humble and hungry to make sure that we stay focused."

NU swept UST in the elimination round with two convincing wins, 71-67 and 75-61.

UST head coach Pido Jarencio is confident that previous games will not matter anymore in the Final Four. Jarencio explained that "Kahit papaano, may chance tayo na maka-balik sa Finals. Alam kong medyo mahirap, number one team ang kakalabanin natin, pero pagdating naman ng Final Four, ibang usapan na 'yan. Pare-parehas na tayo d'yan. It's all about the heart, tsaka 'yung desire – kung sino 'yung mas gustong manalo."

Last year, the Growling Tigers denied the UAAP Finals from the Bulldogs. This time around, NU has the advantage of ousting UST and claim its first Finals appearance.
