The Breath Of Lakshmī

Om Shrīm Mahalakshmiyai Namaha

When we work with the awareness that Lakshmī personifies the fullness of life, we begin to enter the sublime realm of this deity field. Lakshmī is the fullness of life in all its fertile darkness and magnificent light. Think about what it means to dive into this fullness, embracing the sheer hugeness of it all.
As you contemplate the presence of Lakshmī, imagine that as you breathe in, you breathe in this fullness. And as you breathe out, you move into it. Breathe in, breathe out, breathe in, breathe out, opening wider and wider, deeper and deeper, moving into this inexhaustible vitality, life force, and grace. This is the breath of Lakshmī.
You can take this practice deeper by repeating the Lakshmī-bija-mantra silently, coordinating it with your breath.

If you’re a podcast listener, you know that I work as a voiceover actress. I like to sing to warm up my voice before I start work, and this week I’ve been using the creativity chant from Deva Premal’s “Mantras for Precarious Times“. It’s just the right length for a short meditation, and I love the feeling of deep grounding afterward. Being free & calm does help with creativity, and my voice is much more able to do justice to a script after singing for eight minutes. Singing is such a direct link to the soul for me, perhaps for you too?

More new music this week! Enjoy.

<itunes:summary>If you're a podcast listener, you know that I work as a voiceover actress. I like to sing to warm up my voice before I start work, and this week I've been using the creativity chant from Deva Premal's "Mantras for Precarious Times". It's just the right length for a short meditation, and I love the feeling of deep grounding afterward. Being free & calm does help with creativity, and my voice is much more able to do justice to a script after singing for eight minutes. Singing is such a direct link to the soul for me, perhaps for you too?

More new music this week! Enjoy.

Last week I mentioned a new CD I found by Deva Premal called “Mantras for Precarious Times”. It’s a selection of seven mantras chosen specifically to support us as we move through challenging times. The tracks are very simple, but that just serves to highlight the purity of Deva Premal’s voice. There are mantras for peace and healing, among other things–but the one I chose for this week’s podcast is for abundance. Here’s the link to purchase the CD. Read more about the meaning of the mantras and how to use them as a meditation practice here.

May your week be filled with blessings and peace. Namaste.

<itunes:summary>Last week I mentioned a new CD I found by Deva Premal called "Mantras for Precarious Times". It’s a selection of seven mantras chosen specifically to support us as we move through challenging times. The tracks are very simple, but that just serves to highlight the purity of Deva Premal’s voice. There are mantras for peace and healing, among other things--but the one I chose for this week's podcast is for abundance. Here's the link to purchase the CD. Read more about the meaning of the mantras and how to use them as a meditation practice here.

May your week be filled with blessings and peace. Namaste.

Here’s something to ponder–just two years ago, our small town had no kirtan at all. Now we have about twenty regular Sunday Satsang attendees, and two live kirtan bands. You can bring this wonderful practice to your community–all it takes is a few people, a space to sing & an IPod. Try it in your town, you might be surprised at the results.

I hope you do a little dance of your own to this week’s set. Namaste.

<itunes:summary>It's a great new day--I've started a kirtan band and life is good. The band has two guitar players, several different kinds of percussion, a harmonium/keyboard, an autoharp (me), and a cello (sometimes). Mostly everybody sings harmony. We've had two rehearsals now, and it's coming together very quickly.

Here's something to ponder--just two years ago, our small town had no kirtan at all. Now we have about twenty regular Sunday Satsang attendees, and two live kirtan bands. You can bring this wonderful practice to your community--all it takes is a few people, a space to sing & an IPod. Try it in your town, you might be surprised at the results.

I hope you do a little dance of your own to this week's set. Namaste.

<itunes:summary>Every once & awhile a chant will follow me around for weeks, and sometimes it suggests a theme for the podcast. The chant haunting me lately is "Amma" from Larisa Stowe & Shakti Tribe's "Reaching In". Amma means mother--and it's especially poignant for me this week as my youngest son leaves for college. I know it's the season, it's time, and it's good for him & me both--we have bright, sparkling futures awaiting us. Still, it's a passage that's both sad & happy, and one that I need to feel, grieve & release. The chants I chose for the podcast this week soothe me on a deep level, and it was a blessing to be able to sing them with dear friends on Sunday night. Kirtan heals all. Namaste.

<itunes:summary>Summer is ending--there are changes coming & I'm feeling pensive. Change is a constant--in the weather, in our bodies, in life. As sweet Snatam sings in Kabir's Song: "Breathe in the quiet center". The purity of her voice, the simplicity of that message--it breaks my heart open every time I hear it. In the turbulence of life, thank goodness there is kirtan, an endless flow of beautiful, heart-felt music that brings us to the Quiet Center.

Enjoy the set. Namaste.

Go sing, even if you think you can’t carry a tune in a bucket. No one cares. Really. Sing kirtan–and go get you some peace! Namaste.
