Internet Explorer 8: Release Candidate 1

Even as the browser war continues to slip out of Microsoft s hands, the company has released the newest iteration of its flagship browser Internet Explorer 8 Release Candidate 1 (IE8 RC1) in a new bid to recapture its market share. Available for download, this is almost a finished product unlike the beta, and from whatever we have found out, things only look brighter than before. With a plethora of new features, this new update looks very promising.

You can download IE8 RC1 at www.microsoft.com/ie8. There is a 32-bit as well as 64-bit version for Vista and Windows Server 2003 but only a 32-bit version for XP, which is understandable since very few use the 64-bit XP. The download size is under 17 MB no matter what version you download, so it will not take too long. If you have installed Windows 7 Beta, you will not be able to install anything as these are not compatible with this newer OS and there is no IE8 RC1 for this OS. Windows 7 Beta already has IE8, but it is the Beta version. Before you upgrade, we must tell you that you can choose to uninstall this version if something doesn t seem right to you and it will return to the earlier version of the browser. Let s now go on to explore the new features.

After you download and start installing it, you need to accept the EULA to proceed further. You can opt to install updates, which is recommended, but make sure that you are connected to the Internet during this stage of the installation. You can opt to turn on Suggested Sites near the end of the installation. You can also opt to choose a default search provider, choose Accelerators and install compatibility settings for backward compatibility.

If you need, IE8 can open a web page where you can choose the default search provider and the Accelerator you wish to add. The installation took us over 15 minutes to complete, which is longer than any other browser we have tested. However, we must mention that the bulk of this time is taken to download the updates and a little over five minutes is taken for the rest. You need to restart the PC once, which is yet another thing that is not seen in any other browser installation. Installing IE needs a restart of the OS, as it is tightly integrated with it and even the file explorer depends on it.

Auslogics releases Disk Defrag with command line support. The command line options are among the most comprehensive and are suitable for silently defragmenting servers, workstations and personal computers.

Personal computers and especially file servers require frequent disk defragmentation for maximum disk access speed. Recognizing this, Auslogics team has come up with a new version of Disk Defrag that supports command line options. The new version can be run manually on a personal computer, remotely or via a batch file on a server.

Command line options allow the user to defragment multiple disks, specify how much CPU should be used during the defragmentation process, and generate detailed HTML logs. Defragmentation of separate files and folders is also possible. A comprehensive list of errors codes is provided, so that system administrators can use the program in their automation scripts.

Home users may find that they are more comfortable with the feature-rich built-in scheduler available in the program settings. The scheduler allows to specify when the automatic defragmentation should be performed, which disks will be defragmented, and if a detailed report should be created.
