The recent stormy weather that has hit New Zealand is atypical of the weather that normally characterises kiwi winters - where chilly nights often give way to bright, crisp days.

Winter really is a beautiful time of year in New Zealand. As the low light casts across the well-known magnificent scenery conditions prove great for photography - as captured in a series of pictures by Independent group photographer Hannah Bills.

'Australia and New Zealand in winter: a photographer's guide' by Peter and Hannah bills shows off the substantial appeal of the southern hemisphere in July.

"The traveller in Australia and New Zealand in mid-winter gleans some wonderful sights, as these pictures by show. In winter especially, there is a clarity to the late-afternoon light, that is nature’s aid to photographers. It shines so vividly and brightly shortly before it dies that images are magnified, perhaps glorified.

Shots taken on both north and south islands in New Zealand illustrate the natural beauty that is that country. Ducks are seen drifting effortlessly, in precise formation, across the lake at Christchurch’s Clearwater Resort against a backdrop of the setting sun. Intensely cold, mid-winter days in New Zealand, especially in the south island, often produce vivid blue skies to tempt the photographer".

From www.independent.co.uk, 31 July 2008

Having just watched the video of a friend's recent skydiving exploits, I'm reminded of how much (curiously) I really want to try this activity for myself. Some years ago I watched similar footage of another friend taking the plunge in Taupo and immediately felt this was the place to make my tandem skydiving ambitions a reality. Why? Well it's just so New Zealand!

Adrenaline acts in high places are a common theme all over New Zealand, as well as a number of softer, yet equally lofty pursuits.

In Auckland, the southern hemisphere's tallest building provides an excellent jumping off point for well... jumping off! 192m straight down. Other visitors use the lift.

As previously mentioned, tandem skydiving is on offer in Taupo , as well as Queenstown and Wanaka, so participants can choose which spectacular views to admire on the descent - mountains and lakes or volcanoes and lakes.

Hot air ballooning is always a favourite and an activity I can heartily recommend. Gliding across the Canterbury Plains at sunrise is simply magical. I've yet to try ballooning over the vineyards of Hawkes Bays, but there is time.

There are other ways to reach new heights in New Zealand (or plunge from them) including bungy jumping, heli-hiking and all number of scenic flights, but in my opinion, nothing matches the thrill and the grace of hang-gliding (tandem of course). From the initial adrenaline surge of running off the edge of the Remarkables Range outside of Queenstown to suddenly finding myself silently soaring across the skies above the Wakatipu Basin this was an experience to savour.

My Mt Cook experience was absolutely fantastic. We took a ski plane over the mountain and landed on the snow as it glistened in the sunshine – a wonderful memory that will stay with me for many years! A lake cruise is the perfect way to see it with the spectacular backdrop of mountains and autumn trees reflected in the water.

We were so spoilt in Queenstown – I felt like royalty! After a lovely breakfast at Three Sixty restaurant we went on the Shotover Jet – very thrilling (and wet for that matter) as we zoomed through the canyons – it feels like you are able to touch the mountains they are so close. We then enjoyed an incredible helicopter ride to Cecil Peak Ledge. After we landed we were treated to a surprise champagne toast over-looking Queenstown. The views are absolutely amazing – priceless! Then… just to top it off I para-glided off the summit of Bobs Peak – near the skyline restaurant – floating down into the heart of Queenstown. All memories that I will cherish forever and yearn to experience again!

I can’t wait to get back out there!"

Neither can I!

OK, so being in such glorious surroundings you may think going to the cinema is a waste of time, but this is no ordinary cinema. What's special about Paradiso apart from the very chilled out atmosphere is the quirky seating. Not only can sink into a sofa and munch on a slice of pizza and beer, but a you can also opt to watch your chosen film from the 'comfort' of a Morris Minor. You can't deny it's different.

Located on Ardmore Street in downtown Wanaka, with hot meals available before, during or after the movie plus homemade icecream and hot cookies for the intermission, if you have the time, check this place out.

Personally, I think they do cinemas rather well in New Zealand. It was particularly taken by the comfort of Reading Cinemas Regency Cinelounge in Wellington (and all over NZ). Laz-e-boy reclining armchairs and food delivered to your seat made for a more satisfactory experience than at my local Odeon. I've also a soft spot for the Regent on Worcester in Christchurch - a great place to catch the latest New Zealand releases.

Not only did he have perfect weather during his 9 days, but he also managed to pack in some fantastic experiences.

From kayaking on the crystal clear waters of Abel Tasman and whale watching in Kaikoura to a heli-flight over Milford Sound and a climb up Single Cone in the Remarkables. He also went kiwi spotting on Stewart Island, sand-boarded down huge dunes in Hokianga and ate fresh crayfish al fresco.

The plan was simple and based on research that a chick's chance of survival increased considerably once they weighed about 1kg.

A pilot scheme was tried, whereby wild eggs and chicks were relocated to a safe haven during their most vulnerable period before returning them to the wild. The scheme worked and the project became BNZ Operation Nest Egg. Each summer during the breeding season, eggs and chicks are collected and looked after 'in captive-rearing facilities and predator-free creches. When the juveniles have reached about 1.2 kilograms and are able to better fend for themselves, they are released back to their wild home'.

This year, Hupai's appearance brought the grand total of successfully hatched chicks to 1000! The Save The Kiwi website charts the progress of this oblivious star and offers a wealth of information about the project and kiwis.

Such is the prominence of the kiwi in New Zealand that they can be found everywhere from Auckland to Wellington, Christchurch to Queenstown, around hotels, in airports and shops. It is omnipresent in one form or another. The real-life little fellow is much harder to find - though worth the quest, he truly is!

My only encounter with a kiwi was curiously enough in the National Aquarium in Napier. Though unlike another well-known flightless bird found in New Zealand, the penguin, kiwis are not known for their aquatic skills. Stewart Island is recognised as being the best place to spot kiwis in the wild. But since these curious little creatures are nocturnal as well as superbly camouflaged, patience and a good guide are key ingredients.

“If you are lucky enough to come across a kiwi, savour the privilege. Stay still and watch. Don't approach within 5 metres. please do not disturb them in any way”.
stewartisland.co.nz

Happy spotting!

Loads of cgi effects, plenty of action with epic battles and sword fights galore and then of course there is the glorious setting. Once again NZ provided the location and that's a great reason to go see this film if no other. Even during the trailer the landscape is very familiar as one moment the Pevensie siblings are standing on a dreary wartime London tube station before being transported to a glorious sun drenched beach on the Coromandel..., ahem Narnia.

As the iconic image of Cathedral Cove appeared on the screen I couldn't help but feel a little amused. Was this iconic NZ setting really supposed to be a fantastical world of talking lions, fauns and ice queens? Perhaps somewhere a little more generic would have been better, but who am I to complain. The Coromandel bathed in sunshine, looked great!!

Curiously for one who loves a good action romp including those aimed at the 'kid market', I didn't quite gel with the first Narnai outing and found myself wishing that I was 10 years old again to fully appreciate it. However, I'm fully prepared to give this sequel a fair go, if only to go and admire the lovely setting...

Last week, the world said farewell to one of the greatest explorers ever to have lived, Sir Edmund Hillary. This week, the nation mourns the passing of Hone Tuwhare, New Zealand's second Poet Laurate and the first Maori poet to be published in English. He was 86.

Hillary's feats need little introduction and will remain forever in legend amongst humankind's most compelling endeavours. As a poet, Tuwhare's accomplishments were of a more understated nature and although he is not as well known internationally as 'Sir Ed' his poetic legacy will live on in the country of his birth.

Prime Minister Helen Clark said in a statement that Tuwhare had made an outstanding contribution to New Zealand literature. "His poetry contained powerful imagery of our land, sea and legends, and often expressed strong views on contemporary issues".

Associated Press reports:
Tuwhare's work, spanning more than 40 years, was popular among poetry connoisseurs and general readers alike. He was named New Zealand's Te Mata Poet Laureate in 1999, won two Montana New Zealand Book Awards for poetry and was awarded honorary doctorates of literature by Auckland and Otago Universities.

Happy New Year!

Now that Christmas is but a thing of the past (at least for another 12, 11... 10 months), New Year's resolutions have been made (and already broken) and the first serious snowfall of the season has descended onto UK soil, I find my mind wandering to far off lands, where the sun does shine and adventure beckons.

As we sit at home cosily tucked up against the long, cold winter nights, on the other side of the world, summer is blazing into full glory, with events and festivals galore filling the calendar. (These events include New Zealand's premier tennis tournament, the Auckland Heineken Open marking the beginning of my beloved tennis season). Given all this activity and sunshine, it's little wonder that January is such a popular time for UK visitors to New Zealand. Though popular doesn't have to mean busy.

This is after all, New Zealand we're talking about and 'peak season' and 'crowds' are a relative term. Naturally January is a busy time for some of the major tourist areas in the country, especially as this is summer holiday time for the locals too. So then, if you plan to escape winter with a jaunt down under, why not try 'off the beaten track'?

From a personal perspective I can observe that North Island's East Cape is amazing in January. Picturesque bays, sandy beaches textured by driftwood, Maori Marae's and glorious sunsrises. Best of all, as you travel out and about each day you'll find you have the place virtually to yourself. Heading westward, you'd not be mistaken for believing the 'Forgotten World Highway' to qualify as a lesser explored region. This touring route, which runs from Stratford in Taranaki to Tongariro National Park is a historic hidden gem past rolling hills, dramatic gorges, dense forests to the stunning alpine vista of central North Island. Finally, journey south, far south, to the untouched beauty of the Catlins Coast.

I have yet to experience Christmas in the warmer climes of the southern hemisphere, although to do so is firmly in my plans for the future. I mean, there are just so many options...

If you've family or friends to visit you may simply be able to enjoy a traditional roast turkey will all the trimmings followed by the unusual bonus of a post-lunch swim in the sea or spot of sunbathing. The meal may take on more of a kiwi slant with a BBQ on the beach or cold meats accompanying pavlova on the terrace. If the sun is shining, who needs Christmas pud?!

For independent travellers, Christmas is really the perfect excuse to stay in one of New Zealand's idyllic lodges and really relax. Amidst a gloriously scenic setting, let someone else prepare an 'out of this world' dining experience as you simply chill out and indulge.

Of course, you could choose to treat the day like any other day and let the magnificence of the New Zealand scenery transport you into a world far from sleigh bells and tinsel. On a self drive holiday you can head off to find a quiet spot and many activities and attractions are open even on Christmas day.

Finally, it's not such a bad time of year to actually set off on your New Zealand adventure, especially if the idea of repeating the same old Christmas arrangements just doesn't appeal. Embarking on overseas travel really does have a way of kicking off the new year well. A couple of years ago I travelled to NZ on New Year's Day and I can sincerely say that it was the best start to a year imaginable.

If you plan to visit New Zealand next Christmas, take a tip and book early to make sure you get exactly what you want. It'll be worth it!

So whether it is white or warm, I wish you all a very a merry Christmas.

As I just sneak this post in under the November radar, I thought I'd just take the opportunity to reminisce about one my the best memories of New Zealand, which also happened in November some years ago - walking the Abel Tasman track.

The popular coastal path that runs through Abel Tasman National Park follows some of the most beautiful coastline in New Zealand and is situated at the north of South Island, near to lovely Nelson.

In true kiwi spirit, the Abel Tasman, combines adventure with nature, as the track follows the natural lye of the headland, passing through luscious fern lined bush then opening up onto stunning bays with golden beaches. As the views keep on coming, you'll have trouble putting your camera down.

In order to find time to really appreciate the surroundings, a few nights in this National Park are well worth it. Anchorage Bay provides an idyllic setting for an overnight. The horseshoe shaped beach is framed by rich green fauna, which gives the bay a feeling of seclusion and tranquillity. The water is clear and amazingly inviting. Relaxation is not hard in such a setting.

So, Anchorage Bay wins my scenic vote, but crossing the Awaroa estuary at 'low' tide (I'd hate to see high tide!) was by far the most entertaining moment of the trek, though I even have a soft spot for the sand flys! In short, trekking the Abel Tasman is great fun and spring is the perfect time to do so - though it has much to offer all year round.

On a sidenote, posts have been a little thin on the ground lately because we've been working hard on our latest New Zealand brochure, which is due back from the printers next week. It's looking great - the perfect inspiration for your New Zealand holiday. Order online now and we'll send you a copy just as soon as it's available.

As fine weather in the last few days has really brought out the colours of Autumn in the UK, over on the other side of the world, there's a different sort of awakening. Spring is in the air, which is bloomin' marvellous for gardeners!

Indeed, October in NZ is festival time with rhodies taking centre stage in not one, but two, dedicated festivals happening at opposite ends of the country (creative geography rules).

October 25-28 sees the Dunedin Rhododendron Festival return for its 24th year, while one day later Western North Island launches the 20th annual Taranaki Rhododendron & Garden Festival running from 26 Oct to 4 Nov.

The former celebrates the gardens of Otago, both private and public, focusing on glorious rhododendrons. Garden tours, open gardens, cooking demonstrations, a golf tournament and painting classes amongst other activities aim to give the event wider appeal to more than gardeners. There is even a elaborate Masquerade Ball held at Larnach Castle.

Meanwhile, back on North Island, Taranaki brings out the big guns with 16 of the festival's 49 featured gardens being of National or Regional Significance (the highest number of any region in the country).

Gardens in bloom are a great reason to visit NZ in the Spring and we can put together a tailor-made self drive holiday focusing on NZ's lovely gardens for the really green-fingered among you. So you’ll be able to see all of the country’s stunning highlights with a floral accompaniment.

New Zealand wines have just "taken the pinot noir and sauvignon blanc titles at the International Wine and Spirit Competition in London for the second year running", underlining the country's already solid reputation as a producer of fine wines. The awards are based on technical analysis as well as taste to ensure that consumers receive the same quality product as the judges, so when it comes to a 'nice Sav', you need look no further.

It is for just this reason that discovering New Zealand's wineries is such a popular inclusion on the itineraries of many visitors and is definately not something that need be reserved for gourmets and wine buffs. South Island's Marlborough region and Hawkes Bay on the North Island are the two premier wine producing districts, though quality vineyards are dotted around the country from Auckland to Wanaka and there are several ways to experience the taste of the grape.

You can simply choose to follow a map and drive yourself around the local wineries, though the pitfalls to this one are hopefully quite obvious. Alternatively you can try pedal power as with The 'On Yer Bike Winery Tour' out of Napier. Supplied with the bike and a map you set off on a pleasant day out cycling past olive groves, ostrich farms and orchards, and of course vineyards. You're even supplied with a mobile phone so you can call for a lift if the excericise (or the wine) proves too much! Guided tours are another popular option and give you a chance to discover a range of wines at a number of different wineries as somebody else navigates. And in Marlborough you can also choose to take a walking option.

But for me the best way to experience New Zealand's wine culture is to pick a venue, book a table for lunch, jump in a taxi and then spend a glorious afternoon enjoying fine wine, good food and charming views. Definitely a 'go slow and savour' moment.

After the weekend just gone, I think a glass of two of wine is definately in order! A toast to England and commisserations to the All Blacks - who knows, perhaps the colour of strip really is important!

Well, it's been going off in New Zealand this week and we haven't even reached the conclusion of RWC yet! I talk of course of Mt Ruapehu, New Zealand's most active volcano and part of the trio of volanoes in Tongariro National Park. The eruption lasted for seven minutes and was not anticipated by the experts, the volcano having given no warning signs.

One of NZ's most popular ski area, in the summer Tongariro NP provides the setting for some of the country's great walks including the famed one-day Tongariro Crossing.

As Lindi, our NZ product manager commented, "I did the walk in the summer and was astonished at the colours and textures of the landscape dominated by the volcanic peaks. Definately a trek to recommend".

There is something rather fascinating about volcanoes and the raw power of nature they represent. Indeed as part of our Iceland programme we feature a Volcano Hotline, whereby in the event of a volcanic eruption we'll arrange short notice trips to get clients over to Iceland to witness the activity at close hand. Logistics may prove a little difficult for us to offer a similar service in New Zealand!

Due to the home side understandably electing to sport their own traditional dark blue colours, the visiting team must defer to their away kit. In this case, silver jerseys.

So, will the All Blacks minus the black be as effective? Of course, says second row Chris Jack. "We're still playing for New Zealand and running out with the same guys. I guess it won't make a difference, but we'll see". The alternate jersey is still adorned with the silver fern logo though and it would seem that this is important part.

Black is a pretty significant colour in New Zealand. Apart from the All Blacks, the NZ cricket team are called the Black Caps and the hockey team the Black Sticks. Then there's Black Cat offering daily cruises on scenic Akaroa harbour near Christchurch and black water rafting in Waitomo. Fortunately though there is hope, since the world class NZ netball team are called the Silver Ferns. Except, they also play in black, ooops!

As the game kicks off on Sunday at 5pm, I shall be watching with quiet anticipation to see whether black really is magic or if in rugby, as in life, its the shades of grey that count.

New Zealand has a very long list of 'must do's'. I mean what with the stunning landscapes, fascinating Maori culture, welcoming vibe and wealth of things to do, the more you think about things the longer the list gets. But what makes NZ truly special are the unexpected experiences and personal highlights that all travellers seem to come away with. New Zealand is many things to many people.

For me, Sunny Nelson is one place that when I hear mentioned always brings out fuzzy warm feelings. The moment I arrived I just felt completely at home in this well-sized town at the top of South Island. Nelson is the gateway to Abel Tasman National Park and hence the main reason visitors spend time here. This was indeed why I visited, but I'm so glad that I allowed time in town itself too. It's not that I filled my days with every activity going (of which there are many to choose from), it's just that I really enjoyed just soaking up the atmosphere.

In some ways its that good old social hub, the local pub that holds my affections the most. Several good evenings were spent drinking finest DB in the Victorian Rose and the odd afternoon enjoying a bottom-less cup of coffee with cookie accompanyment. But mostly it was just a great place to relax and kick back. Walking along the river, strolling through the gardens and around Trafalgar Square, attempting a coastal walk then hitching a lift back into town resulting in an impromtu guided tour by very friendly locals. Simple things, but great. I'm not the only one to find Nelson so appealing. Two of my friends travelling at completely different times also found a certain buzz and charm to this place. It really does get my vote.

This country is not just about seeing all best bits...for starters you'd need a lifetime... it's about savouring the moment and then loving the memories.

Downtown Wellington hosts the annual World of Wearable Art Awards Show this month featuring spectacular and truly bizarre creations from artists around the world - and all are wearable...at least that's the theory. 'WOW' as the event is colloquially and I suspect aptly referred to, runs from 20-30 September across 9 performances all held at the TSB Bank Arena, Queens Wharf.

A montage of theatre, dance, colour, movement and art, simply put, the Montana WOW® Awards Shows are theatrical spectaculars".

First shown in 1987 and with an audience of around 30,000 each year, this event has grown into a very successful NZ brand from its humble origins as a promotion for a rural art gallery in Nelson, where a WOW museum showcases creations past and present. For full info about the event and its background, visit the dedicated website. I personally have my eye on the discreet little number to my left.

Yet in spite of setting such consistent standards in world rugby, they've only picked up the trophy once back in 1987 at the inaugural tournament. Four disappointments later could this be the year?

With reigning champions England unlikely to repeat their victory of 4 years ago (and with that comment I think I'm being kind) it may be time to put my faith in the world's best to pull off a win. That said, nothing will stop me loudly singing 'Swing Low' everytime England take to the field.

That rugby union means a lot to the Kiwis might be considered an understatement. It is the national sport and with the team's exceptional track record, consistently the best in the world, Kiwis should be rightfully proud. Rugby is the dominant theme in practically every souvenir shop you'll come across with Canterbury clothing, rugby shaped stress balls, and cuddly kiwis wearing the All Black strip all featuring. But if it's a more authentic rugby experience you're after, why not head down to Palmerston North. En route to Wellington, this university town hosts the All Black's training ground and a Rugby Museum full of sporting memorabilia. And if you wait a month or two there might be some additional goldware to marvel at...

You could take this as a comment on the sophistication (or lack of) of my jewellery taste, but for me its simply that I love wearing it. I like its aesthetic simplicity. I like its cultural significance. But most of all I like that it reminds me of one the best times of my life travelling around a amazing country.

You can also opt to carve your own and Whitianga on the Corormandel is a great place for this.

One thing that I hadn't imagined when I bought it though, was how much of an identifying mark it would be. On numerous occasions on meeting someone for the first question i've been asked "Have you been to New Zealand?". Out of context this seems like a really random question, but then I remember I'm wearing my bone carving and it all becomes clear...

Since 1995 I've been bought or bought myself several further necklaces from New Zealand, but it's still the original that I wear the most.

This town, which is NZ's fourth largest city, is not really renowened for it's tourism, but it has plenty of themed gardens, (not necessarily the most obvious companion to rally driving), and is near to the glow worm caves of Waitomo.

And if this inspires you to try tackle a bit of grunt driving head down the road to Rotorua and try the Self Drive 4WD Bush Safari. A 1-hour adventure through a purpose built extreme off-road trail. Fun!!

I’m guessing the local kids don’t play too many ball games. Either that or possibly their catching skills are second to none!

The annual Baldwin Street Gutbuster is part of our Dunedin Summer Festival programme and challenges particpants to test their fitness levels by running from bottom to top and back again. Seriously… only in New Zealand!!

This particular street proved of great interest to my Dad when he travelled to NZ a few years ago. Why? Because he’s a cyclist and was keen to test the theory that it’s too steep to cycle up. I'm still waiting for the outcome though, since never one to take the simple option, he hired a penny farthing for some cycling fun instead of the more conventional mountain bike. Funnily enough the owners were a little reluctant that their museum piece be used in such a way. There’s Kiwi blood pumping through his veins I’ve no doubt…

Amidst the new crop of animated films coming our way is another tale about penguins (flightless they may be, but good for humourous characterisation you cannot deny) only this time they're surfing! Why not? It's so obvious when you think about it.

So, surfing (that really is my tenuous link). It's not the first activity I think of when it comes New Zealand, but the ol' west coast of the North Island is a hidden gem for keen surfers. Western North Island is one of the least visited regions of the country. It's necessitates a detour from the main visitor highway via Rotorua and Napier and as such is often overlooked. Surfies do so at your peril.

With 105km of surf coastline there are some legendary breaks to be had along Surf Hwy 45 - New Zealand's only dedicated surf driving route. It's the perfectly angled swells from the Tasman Sea that roll into sweeping deserted beaches, clipping reefs and sandbars that make this such a good location ensuring 'pumping waves and impressive barrels'. Base yourself in New Plymouth and not only do you have world class surfing on your doorstep but also excellent walking in Egmont National Park where stunning cone-shaped Mt Taranaki provides an iconic backdrop.

New Zealand really does have it all!

White water surfing (Queenstown) – one for serious waterbabies and a notch up the adrenaline ladder from white water rafting

Zorbing (Rotorua) – clamber into a giant inflatable ball and roll down a hill, add warm water for an extra twist

Sand boarding (Hokianga) – climb a sand dune, which is considerably harder than it looks, then toboggan back down again aboard a specially adapted boogie board. Dismount style optional!

Glacier walk (Franz Josef) – don a pair of hobnail boots and test your thigh muscles to the full with a guided walk on the tongue of Franz Josef glacier. Just see how well you handle stairs the following day…

Bungy jumping (Queenstown) – still a classic when it comes to pushing the adrenaline button and if you’re going to do it, why not in the place where bungy was born. Fab scenery too!

Hang gliding (Queenstown) – a great chance to enjoy the Remarkables ranges and simply the only way to fly…

Jet boating (Taupo) - another exhilarating pursuit that the Kiwis gave to the world. Jump aboard these specially modified speed boats and chuck a few 360’s on the most thrilling river boat ride you’ll ever take.

Sky jump (Auckland) – the Sky Tower is the tallest building in New Zealand, so it’s only natural that you’d jump off it! It takes only 16 seconds to descend and it’s totally safe…

And that’s just for starters. Great rule of thumb when it comes to getting active in New Zealand. If you can’t do it there you can’t do it anywhere… Have fun!

After all it’s not for nothing that Auckland is referred to as the ‘City of Sails’ and regardless of whether or not you’re a ‘yachtie’ yourself, in my opinion this passion is one of the city’s great plusses. The Viaduct Harbour, which was revamped when Auckland last hosted the America’s Cup in 2003 is a great asset to the city and is the perfect waterside location to enjoy café culture or indulge in some fine dining.

From an activity standpoint, sailing takes centre stage with the Sail NZL40, which provides a unique opportunity to crew an America’s Cup grand prix racer. No previous experience is required but your participation is encouraged. There are many other ways to take to the water in Auckland including a Harbour Lunch Cruise, but for pure thrills the NZL40 is hard to beat.

Many a time at travel shows I have been asked by potential clients (mostly by teachers I would suspect) if it's worth travelling to New Zealand in their winter time. "Of course" I always answer. Not only do you get to travel the country in the quietest period, benefit from crowd-free attractions and add skiing to the list of available activities, but after checking the 5-day forecast for both Wellington and London, you may even enjoy better weather than you'll get back home. (Just to clarify, Wellington weather shown on the left). Frankly I know where I'd rather be.

I hear the Matterhorn restaurant/bar is very good at this time of year. I mean, everybody knows that there's nowhere better for filming fantasy epics involving wizards and elves and good versus evil! Which got me to thinking...what can film fans expect from next from NZ?

Well, staying in the world of fantasy, Prince Caspian the next (published) story in the Chronicles of Narnia series started filming in NZ in February. LOTR this may not be, but any excuse for sword play. In a similar vein, the current offering in cinemas, 'Bridge to Terabithia', was filmed in and around Auckland and is supposed to be a jolly fine family film. Finally, back in the real world, albeit in the past, and Peter Jackson's remake of 'Dambusters' is in production for release next year and is due to be filmed largely in Wellington. The original was such a classic I can't wait to see how the film is updated for modern audiences.

I get a buzz from watching New Zealand feature in films, but that doesn't compare to how I felt seeing the film locations for real. Pretending to fight off orcs on the full day TranzAlpine Experience was great, but visiting the towns and villages of the East Cape as featured on our 'Whale Rider' self drive tour was incredible. Next time I'm heading to Taranaki for 'The Last Samurai' flashbacks.

On a side note for fans of the genre I would definitely recommend Eragon. It's a fun romp and I look forward to the next instalment...should there be one. By the way, it was filmed in Hungary, though Weta Digital (based in Wellington and founded by Peter Jackson) was responsible for the special effects.

After all, it would have been impolite not to attend! When I think about it I’ve actually been selling NZ for far longer than 6 years. As soon as I returned home from my first trip I couldn’t stop telling everyone to visit. ‘What was not to like?’ ‘You simply can’t have a bad time’. Had I really just travel
