It was a perfect day for a wedding in November, in Pasadena, California. The Langham Huntington Hotel in South Pasadena is the most wonderful backdrop for beautiful and natural wedding photography. Hey Ho, Let’s go!! Cyn, a photographer of all sorts, originally from Plymouth, Minnesota, and Stan, a rocket scientist from Wolverhampton, England, met and fell in love. After several years of dating bliss, they decided on a Rock n’ Roll Wedding for 40 of their closest friends and the best wedding photographer in Los Angeles, eh chem. The day started early. 11am the guests and the groom loaded onto a fully loaded tour bus and headed to the Club Nokia Theater in Downtown Los Angeles. After a fully costumed wedding ceremony a la Princess Bride… “Mawidge is a dweam wiffin a dweam. The dweam of wuv wapped wiffin the gweater dweam of everwasting west. Eternity is our fwiend, wemember that, and wuv wiw fowwow you fowever.” And so on. There was a lot of dancing — bopping up and down — and a lot of Veuve Clicquot poured. The ceremony on the stage at the Club Nokia was the first of its kind, then onto a cocktail hour in the VIP bar, then a hop over to Disney Hall and a jump off to Grauman’s Chinese, back to the Sunset Marquis Hotel for another 5pm cocktail hour and then finally, a full dinner reception by the pool. A day never to forget. I, as their beloved and humble Sunset Marquis Hotel Wedding Photographer, should also mention that staying the hotel were Avril Lavigne and her crew as well as the final 8 from American Idol, all of who made it onto my long lens, despite their best efforts to hide from it. No, you can’t see them. xo

Don’t know why, but I feel like a proud parent (of my husband) when one of our fabulous former brides (Gianelle) writes us a glowing recommendation based on her experience with (Adi) at her wedding. Maija and Matt loved Gianelle’s photos (they were amazing) and a match was made! M+M’s New Year’s Eve wedding at the exquisite Riviera Country Club in Brentwood, CA, was the perfect backdrop for a sunny winter wedding in Southern California. The wedding was designed entirely by the bride with the help of her incredible team of expert wedding vendors. We all worked to get the best Rivera Country Club Wedding Photography ever! We loved working with her amazing bridal party and family. The groom’s grandfather preformed the ceremony and the couple serenaded each other with an original song during the reception. One of my favorite bridal party photos (ever) was taken in the foyer of the club… What do you think? The bride and groom requested something special and we obliged. I especially like it when the bridal party are really good sports. They were up for anything. They weren’t even drunk…yet.

I have often said, the most important thing about any photography shoot is time of day and quality of light. You can be in the most beautiful place in the world, but if you are shooting it at noon, you are going to encounter a host of difficulties . In contrast, if you are shooting in an ugly place, but the light is gorgeous, you can get amazing photographs. This is why I always encourage wedding clients to work with their photographers and their wedding coordinators to schedule the best time of day and light for their couple’s portrait on the wedding day. There is no trick to getting amazing Los Angeles engagement portraits because the light is always amazing in LA!

Luckily for me, the engagement shoot was photographed at the right time of day, in a gorgeous place, and with amazing people. Lea and Nolan, I can’t wait to photograph your wedding this September.

We love “The Bear!” We have photographed him a bunch of times and as usual, he rocks the camera like he owns it. What we love the most about photographing this family is how seriously his mama takes the portrait process. He is always well rested, well fed and dressed impeccably. I mean, come on, he could be a GAP model.

Thanks to Stacey and Brett for being so fabulous and so wonderful to work with. I have such incredible memories of our day together as their Oviatt Penthouse Wedding photographer. They were an absolute joy to photograph, always full of heart and emotion. And Photographing the bridal party in the streets of L.A. (stopping traffic) was a true highlight!!

Stacey and Brett met working as musicians in film and television, so they enlisted the talents of their friends to provide special touches for their wedding.  Stacey, a former music supervisor, selected ceremony theme songs from movies, and a custom score was written by friends and composers, W.G. Snuffy Walden and Steve Dorff.  The first dance was an original song written by the groom.  As a composer and former music editor, Brett worked with Stacey to make a custom movie shown during dinner.  Casablanca was projected on the penthouse wall while the band and DJ played throughout the evening.  They were honored to have friends, well-known musicians, sit in with the band for special songs.
The bride’s mother made custom table runners and pillows and the groom’s father made the cake topper – miniature figurines of the couple with their two dogs, each playing instruments to form a family band.  The bride worked with her brother-in-law, a graphic designer, to make a custom movie poster that served as a welcome sign, featuring a photo from their Next Exit engagement session and listed their “cast and crew” as the wedding party, family and vendors. (see the end of the post for details!)

a note from the bride and groom:
Photography was the one wedding vendor choice we both equally obsessed about, so we conducted extensive research to find the perfect photographer in all of L.A.  We agreed Next Exit had the best quality photos in their extensive portfolio – excellent in-focus composition while capturing the emotions, which were also very important to us.  We also loved the idea of working with such a fun husband and wife team.  We were thrilled to learn that Cat was available.  After meeting with her in-person, we knew she was our gal!  It was crazy how quickly the actual wedding day came and went, but Cat and her team were there capturing every detail we were hoping to savor, making it fun in the process.  We and our entire wedding party will never forget her fearlessly leading us through the streets of downtown!  We got all of the family, wedding party and detail shots we wanted, plus so many wonderful, candid emotional moments that we weren’t expecting.  We have always imagined our home decorated with beautiful photos from our wedding one day, and we are so glad we trusted Next Exit to deliver!  Thank you so much, Cat and Adi!  We have enjoyed keeping in touch and will continue to follow their gorgeous body of work.  Love, Stacey and Brett

In the lead up to Jordan and Ilana’s huge Orthodox Jewish Wedding at Vibiana, we had the honor of being their photographer a few months earlier at their lovely engagement party.
