Why Everyone Should Be Embracing VOIP

Voice over IP (VOIP) is one of the greatest things to come out of the internet. Although not a new concept, since scientists realised its potential back in the 70s, it has really only become popular within the last half a decade. There are a number of reasons why it didn't come about earlier, the main being slow web speeds. Before broadband, using VOIP services was fairly temperamental, often calls were jittery, laggy and poor quality. Thankfully broadband and particularly wireless internet has allowed voice over IP to flourish globally.

When talking about VOIP many people assume you are talking about Skype. Certainly Skype is one of the most popular and well known applications, recently reporting over 100 million downloads, however it is by far not the only VOIP client around. In fact there are numerous other clients, all with different quirks, features and compatibilities.

Mobile phones are now becoming increasingly powerful and technologically advanced. Despite voice over IP being a competing product to the mobile phone industry, the latest phones are paradoxically supporting the growth of VOIP. Nokia, one of the largest mobile phone manufactures in the world, no longer claims to make mobile phones, instead mini computers. Since phones are packed with the latest gadgets, they in effect are pocket size computers that can also take pictures, play games, stream music and now make free phones calls anywhere in the world using voice over IP.

Smart phones, the latest branding for next generation mobile phones, come with powerful operating systems, plenty of memory and wifi, combining these with normal phone features, a microphone and speaker, make a smart phone the ideal platform to support VOIP.

Advantages of using VOIP are clear, firstly and primarily, it is possible to have unlimited phone usage for free. However to get truly free calls, you will need to be connected to a wireless access point, ideally a free of charge one, for example in a coffee shop. Secondly you can only call someone else who is using the same software as you, and that they are online.

Additionally with VOIP international calls are a thing of the past, it doesn't matter if you are calling your neighbour or your long lost cousin in Tanzania, as long as you are both online you can enjoy unlimited and cost free chatting! The only thing you need to worry about is the different time zones. Further more with VOIP making conference calls is just as easy as making any calls, therefore if you wish to chat with your long lost cousin, great grandmother and distant nephew, it is not a problem, the more the merrier.

Other great benefits include web based voicemail, which allows anyone to access their personal messages wherever is convenient, whether that is a public library, friends laptop, or indeed your own mobile phone. Virtual phone numbers allow businesses to opt for geographical numbers despite not being in the local area. This is beneficial to customers, who can speak to the company at the cost of a local phone call, and the business who can show they have a local presence.

How Secure Is Your VOIP Network?

Voice over IP telephone services are revolutionizing how the world communicates, individuals, and businesses are embracing the capabilities and harnessing the power of the internet. Despite voice over IP being a great technological breakthrough, security is still a major concern, yet with the proper precautions it should not have to be.

Most users implementing VOIP these days are primarily concerned about voice quality, latency and interoperability. However we shouldn't overlook the security risks that can crop up when the voice and data worlds converge, users and analysts say.

With voice over IP, voice traffic is carried over a packet-switched data network via Internet Protocol. VOIP networks treat voice as another form of data but use sophisticated voice-compression algorithms to ensure optimal bandwidth utilization. As a result, VOIP networks are able to carry many more voice calls than traditional switched circuit networks. Voice over IP also enables enhanced services such as unified communications.

Securing voice traffic on such networks isn't very different from securing any data traffic on an IP network. In a VOIP world, private branch exchanges are replaced by server-based IP PBXs running on Windows NT or a vendor 's proprietary operating system. Such call management boxes, which are used both for serving up VOIP services and for logging call information, are susceptible to virus attacks and hackers. Break-ins of these servers could result in the loss or compromise of potentially sensitive data..
Consequently, it 's important that such equipment is properly locked down, placed behind firewalls, patched against vulnerabilities and frequently monitored using intrusion-detection systems.

The University of Houston went one step further and made sure that its call manager and its entire VOIP network aren't directly accessible from the Internet. The school has put its IP PBXs in a different domain than its other servers and has limited administration access to the servers.

VOIP gateway technologies are also a potential weak point. When VOIP is used externally, gateway technologies convert data packets from the IP network into voice before sending them over a public switched telephone network. When VOIP is used internally, the gateways basically route packetised voice data between the source and the destination.

The concern here is that such gateways can be hacked into by malicious attackers in order to make free telephone calls. The trick to protecting against this lies in having strict access-control lists and making sure the gateway is configured in such a fashion that only the people on this list are permitted to make and receive VOIP calls.

As with traditional telephony, eavesdropping is a concern for organizations using VOIP-and the consequences can be greater. Because voice travels in packets over the data network, hackers can use data-sniffing and other hacking tools to identify, modify, store and play back voice traffic traversing the network.

Ultimately, it 's important to remember that securing a VOIP infrastructure involves nothing that is drastically different from the measures corporations have always taken to protect their data. To sum up, There are a few simple things any corporation can take to protect their VOIP network, firstly separating and isolating voice traffic onto a virtual LAN is one way of mitigating the risk, of unauthorized access. Secondly using access lists that define exactly who is entitled to access the network will stamp out external threats. Finally using encryption, as you should with any sensitive data, adds another layer to your secure communication.

In the last few years, softphones – essentially virtual telephones that reside on your PC - have become very popular with the road warrior set. Using a softphone means those workers don’t need to pack extra equipment when they travel, and because they work over the Internet, it can help save a lot of money on the long distance charges that traveling employees often incur.

There are cons of course. In order to receive calls your PC needs to be powered on, and in the event of a system crash your softphone won’t function. There is also the issue of network traffic that can degrade call quality. For those, and other reasons, a physical phone handset is still the best option in an office setting. If you do a lot of traveling or remote working though, a softphone is a nice option.

2007 was an interesting year for telephony in the SMB space. We saw the ongoing marriage of Voice over IP services with customer premises equipment, which I attribute to reliability and quality having finally passed a tipping point. Small Business owners are always looking to reduce costs, and are often willing to take risks on new technology faster than their larger brethren. We all know that VoIP still isn’t a completely mature technology, but the ROI is so compelling that it is hard to resist deploying it in some capacity.

The tipping point is best represented by one solution – the hybrid.

Hybrid analog/VoIP PBXs are in demand. Why? Because not everyone is ready to give up their connections to the traditional telephone system. For some businesses, VoIP doesn’t offer a significant enough cost saving to make it worth the risk to completely switch. Others see it as complex and don’t feel confident in their ability to use this new technology. A hybrid solution lets those businesses experiment with VoIP, while keeping a traditional phone network safety net.

VoIP is about more than just transporting voice. We’re seeing the natural evolution that involves the integration of voice with applications. Social networking, conference collaboration, presence and routing applications, voice networking while gaming and click-to-dial from a web page are all examples of applications that make effective use of VoIP.

As we move further into 2008, I, and many others, expect analog trunking will continue to decline. Most of this can be attributed to the incumbent phone companies not offering any new “bang for your buck” features in their existing service packages. New competitors are entering the market every day with very competitive long distance and local service packages that come with all the necessary features included. Eventually, the incumbent providers are going to reach a point where they have to drop prices in order to compete and survive. When that happens, it will be interesting to see how that ripples across the industry. Will it lead to the demise of some of the newer VoIP service providers, or will it simply put the two technologies on a level playing field when it comes to price? I expect the answer to that question to reveal itself as this year rolls on.

I believe we’ll see a continued evolution as 2008 rolls along, one that will see both traditional and VoIP service providers strive to meet the changing demands of the market. I also believe that it is the hybrid systems, especially those that are designed to be owner-friendly enough that a small business-person can set up and maintain them, that are best suited to take advantage of this evolution. They provide maximum flexibility, and give businesses the ability to take advantage of all the benefits inherent in each technology.

Phone System Horror Story

So, you’re in the market for a new phone system. You’re doing your due diligence, sifting through the vast features and benefits, and all the while, looking at your budget, hoping to get this done so you can get back to your real job.

You get started where most everyone does these days, on Google, typing in some key words that may lead you to a good deal. There, among the usual information, you see it right there, off to the side,“reconditioned phone systems” (or something equal to that) and you think “hey!, now we’re talking!”

You may have just stumbled on to someone else's problem at a great price. Our advice, whether its through our company or not, is to BUY A NEW PHONE SYSTEM.

We’ve had to add more storage space in our back room just to hold all of the letters
and testimonials from people that have found out the hard way how costly it can be to purchase a reconditioned, refurbished, or used phone system.

See, the problem is, the company selling you this system may also have no clue it’s bad, because they bought it used too. Here’s something else to consider, you may not find out it’s bad right away, which makes matters even worse.

Here’s an example; The Smith company purchased a new phone system for their office of about 15 people, and felt good about life. They learned how to use it, and became fond of it. The only problem was, they would get complaints now and then from people in the field saying “we must have a bad connection” or “speak up!” To which they replied “I am” or “Is that any better?”

One and ½ years go by, and they have all finally been part of enough poor quality calls and had the boss upset that they give us a call and ask us to put in a new phone system. We listen as they explain they’ve only had it that year and a half, so we ask what’s wrong, and you know the rest.

At some point, prior to them buying the system, something bad happened, and they bought a bad system. So take our advice, save yourself a lot of money and time, and buy a new phone system. Preferably from us at NextPhoneSystem.com.
