I’m sure some of you may have heard by now that a security vulnerability in an open source code library, called OpenSSL, was discovered on April 7th 2014. This vulnerability is called the Heartbleed Bug and if estimates out there are to be taken as accurate, may affect up to half a million websites. As security expert Bruce Schneier puts it:

“Catastrophic” is the right word. On the scale of 1 to 10, this is an 11.

What does this have to do with N. Gager*? Well N. Gager* uses the OpenSSL library to encrypt your data on iOS. If you are running the most recent version of N. Gager* you will be fine. I haven’t needed to release an update to address the Heartbleed bug because the current version of N. Gager* is built with a version of OpenSSL (1.0.0) that does not contain the bug. I would highly recommend you login to Data.com and change your password, however. The bug has been fixed in the OpenSSL library and is now being adopted by operating system vendors and distribution, appliance vendors, independent software vendors and they are in turn notifying their users to update where appropriate.

So just to recap, if you’re running the latest version of N. Gager* v 1.2 you will be fine, otherwise update!

Today the Apple approved and released N. Gager* 1.2 on the App Store. It took them 6 minutes to review and approve the new release. So yes, the new feature is very quick and easy to use. What is the new feature? While viewing a contact you can now press the flag icon in the top right of the screen to flag a data quality issue with Jigsaw. As you can see from the screenshot below, you can flag issues for phone numbers and email addresses, selecting the reason from a list of popular issues.

It’s a small update. I was hoping this feature would be included in the 1.1 release a few weeks back. Time was running out for submitting an update to the App Store in time for it’s release before Dreamforce. I am delighted that Apple have reviewed this update so quickly. Don’t forget to send me feedback using Twitter, Facebook, snail mail or the feedback form, and hope you all earn countless Jigsaw points helping keep Data.com the high quality business data source that it is!

I would like to announce that, starting today, users will be able to download N. Gager* 1.1 from the App Store. This new version includes a “Contribute Your Data” feature from the Tools section. Some of you may have already been trying out the new contribution features I detailed in a post about the beta release and how those features are available to all users, starting today.

As you can see from the screenshot below, there are 3 options for contributing your data (in decreasing order of effectiveness).

The Quick Submit option is highly recommended for first time use. N. Gager* looks through your iOS Contacts and displays those that meet the minimum requirements for submission to Data.com / Jigsaw. Those contacts with values for e-mail address, first name, last name and job title. N. Gager* will synthesize a candidate contact using an algorithm to determine the most likely to be accurate data from that labeled in your iOS Contacts app. For data fields such as e-mail address, phone number and street address, N. Gager* will search data labelled in the following order: “work”, “main”, “other”, “home”, with phone number being the only data field that can be labeled as “main” (for now). Failing all these checks, N. Gager* will look for unrecognized labels and use the first one it finds. This algorithm is subject to change in the future. But don’t worry, we’re not Google, so it won’t be a Panda Update and no-one will lose out. The feature will simply become more useful.

I would like to see a more intelligent submission manager in the future with local notifications for events such as N. Gager* discovering a new contact in your iOS Contacts that meets the minimum requirements for submission to Data.com / Jigsaw. For now, I hope you enjoy the new contribution features and earn lots of points with Data.com / Jigsaw, and don’t forget, please let me know on Twitter, Facebook or email in to feedback@ngagerapp.com if you love/hate a feature or think I’ve missed out something useful, like vCard or Chatter sharing!

If you’ve been wanting to submit the contact data on your iPhone or iPad to Data.com, then you’ll be happy to discover that today I have released an early beta version of N. Gager* that does just that. The new ‘Contribute Your Data‘ menu option in the Tools section allows you to quickly submit all contacts in your Address Book that meet the minimum data requirements for submission to Data.com. There’s also two other new options as well. You can select an individual contact from the Address Book, or use the manual input form to create a new contact from scratch. Both of these last two options allow you to add your new contact’s data to your iOS Address Book when you’re ready to submit it to Data.com.

If you want to get started uploading your contacts to Data.com join the beta program today and you’ll get access to the app directly from your iOS device. There are, unfortunately, only 100 places on the beta program, so apply immediately to avoid disappointment!
