The premiere issue features an interview by Managing Editor Patrick Witherell of accomplished screenwriter, producer, playwright, and director Neil Landau, who launched his career with the teen comedy “Don’t Tell Mom the Babysitter’s Dead.”

Also featured are five screenwriters, including a filmmaker from the 2011 New Hampshire High School Short Film Festival, Gwen Wilson, who burst onto the scene with her short film “Etz Chayim: Tree of Life.” She wrote her short script that appears in the journal, “The Mind’s Eye,” with co-writer Codie Harrision. Wilson’s Golden Seed Productions team filmed the short last year, which is how GCR editors learned of the newest screenplay by the gifted writer/director.

Another featured New Hampshire scribe is Paul Rogalus, who teaches English at Plymouth State University. His keen writer’s observations led him to a unique take on pick-up techniques in the bar crawling scene with his short, “Trans.” His short screenplay, “Sid and Walt,” was developed in the classroom while studying with GCR Editor Dana Biscotti Myskowski at UNH-Manchester, and went on to win at the Wildsound Film Festival in Toronto and at the PictureStart Film Festival in New York City.

Duncan Putney, an award-winning writer who is the brains behind the multi-Emmy nominated 7DayPSA Competition, wrote “The Lesson” in between penning feature scripts. Putney, a Rhode Island writer and actor, likes the short form screenplay as a way to explore the visual details that are necessary to propel the story forward. He does that with his attention to even the most minute of details in his short featured in this issue.

Pulling from the feature length script, we’ve featured a scene written by the Grand Prize Winner of the 2011 New Hampshire Film Festival’s Screenplay Competition. Kevin O’Malley’s quirky screenplay “Bananafish Sandwich” features teens coming of age and learning about life and something like it. It’s fun and heartfelt, which is easy to see even in his one scene published in this issue.

The idea for Green Chair Reader sprang from the moment Biscotti Myskowski saw one of her short screenplays in print in the Goddard College journal Pitkin Review. Loving the screenplay as an artistic work in and of itself, she is enjoying bringing that to life on the virtual page. Biscotti Myskowski is pleased to also feature artwork by Featured Guest Artist Adam Karolian, who not only designed the GCR header, but who provided images throughout the publication.

GCR welcomes submissions of short screenplays, artwork, and or applications to be a Guest Editor at its website: www.greenchairreader.com.

This will provide a unique opportunity to take in a little history before living the next chapter of that history. Additional, the Tuesday night showing will be supplemented with updates from that nights Iowa Caucuses.

This documentary is the only comprehensive history of the Primary, and it is told from a New Hampshire perspective. Old newsreels, news films, photos, campaign literature and nearly 50 hours of interviews with behind the scene players bring the story or each primary to life. Those interviewed include Governors Hugh Gregg, Lane Dwinell, Walter Peterson, John Sununu, and Jeanne Shaheen, Senators Tom McIntyre, Warren Rudman, Judd Gregg, New Hampshire Secretary of State Bill Gardner, and many more New Hampshire political figures.

The 2 1/2 hour documentary, first produced in 1987 and updated in 2002 with funding from the New Hampshire Political Library, was produced by John Gfroerer of Accompany Video Production in Concord., NH. John will introduced the documentary at each showing--and he will hang around for questions after the showing.

Hope you can make it for one of the showings. Director Stephen Croke will be available for a Q&A following the screening.

THE BUSKER is a provocative coming of age drama to which John Kelleher, the Official Film Censor of Ireland, says, “I watched The Busker last night and really, really liked it…[the] two excellent young leads were so natural and appealing… most impressive.”

After the tragic death of his father, Seamus, a young busker (street musician), falls for a free-spirited African-American girl. Their developing relationship is threatened by the racial tension that surrounds them and an opportunity presented to Seamus by an unlikely stranger.

Set during the snow-filled Christmas season, and filmed by award-winning cinematographer Lukas Ettlin, THE BUSKER has previously screened at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, the Harvard Film Archive, and numerous film festivals.

Stephen Croke’s screenplay for THE BUSKER was selected as a semi-finalist from over 5,000 scripts in the Academy of Motion Picture's Nicholl Fellowship Awards (oscars.com), “regarded as the nation's most prestigious competition for aspiring screenwriters.” He received his Master’s degree from the University of Southern California.

Lukas Ettlin has been the cinematographer on such films as the THE LINCOLN LAWYER, starring Matthew McConaughey, Columbia Pictures’ BATTLE: LOS ANGELES, and SHRINK, starring Kevin Spacey and Robin Williams, as well as music videos for 50 Cent, Usher, Elvis Costello, and Marilyn Manson to name a few.

Liam O’Maonlai, lead singer of the Irish band Hothouse Flowers, plays the role of Patrick O’Mallie and also provides music. Liam was called "the best white soul singer in the world" by U2’s Bono, one of the many music legends with whom Liam has recorded.

Several Irish bands contributed music to the movie’s soundtrack, including Hothouse Flowers, Luka Bloom, Kila, Aine Minogue, and Cormac Breatnach.

Chris Trapper, known for his song "This Time," the number one selling song on the Grammy nominated soundtrack for Warner Bros’. AUGUST RUSH (Robin Williams, Jonathan Rhys Meyers), has a cameo and also supplied a song.

For more information please visit http://www.facebook.com/pages/The-Busker-movie/111071345600322.

The National 7DayPSA Competition, conceived of by Rhode Island actor and Emmy-winning writer Duncan Putney, has been expanding each year to include more areas of the country.

In addition to its overall awards for best piece, the PSA has also been awarded three individual prizes, presented to some of the creative minds behind the short: Adam Jones was recognized as Best Director at the inaugural competition; Gary Anderson received the Best Cinematographer award; and Best Editor went to Marc Dole.

To find a link to the video, please visit the Green Chair Pictures website at www.GreenChairPictures.com.

It could emerge as the most severe crisis in modern history.” - U.S. Rep. Yvette Clarke (D- NY) and U.S. Rep. Trent Franks (R -AZ) April 2011

“We are playing Russian Roulette with the sun.” John Kappenman, Owner of Storm Analysis Consultants and former transmission planner at Minnesota Power, said. “You play that game long enough, you will lose.” Electric Power Daily, October 7, 2011

Millions across the Northeast just lost power due to a freak winter storm in October. As I write this, millions are still without power. Many will be without power for a week. Imagine if the power doesn’t come back for years. Imagine your car doesn’t start and your cell phone won’t work. Imagine food and water supplies dwindling fast. With a CME, this could happen in a blink of an eye, with no warning, and most people would not even know why.

This threat is legitimate, unfathomable, yet only a few are taking action.

It’s understandable. Due to the constant barrage of disaster scenarios before us, when we hear troubling news like this we often react like folks did to the boy who cried wolf. We’ve all heard it too many times before. We don’t listen.

My screenplay CLIMATE addresses this threat of geomagnetic storms. CLIMATE is not a disaster movie, it’s about prevention. It’s a heart-stopping story of the static of our times that takes place in New England and Hawaii. Ultimately, CLIMATE is about listening – to ourselves, each other and the planet - and was written before the evidence starting rolling in that the situation is worse than originally feared.

CLIMATE has received some positive attention (including an A list actress, among others), but its urgent message cannot risk waiting in Hollywood's queue another minute. If CLIMATE is produced now, it can help raise awareness and inspire action. As filmmakers all know, a well-told and emotionally provoking story can motivate its audience to act.

With the clock ticking on protecting our future, action must be taken now. I currently have other projects going, but considering the urgency of CLIMATE’s message I am changing my priorities and creating the time for CLIMATE. When I imagine a future like the one described above, I don’t want to think in hindsight that CLIMATE could have made a difference, but I didn’t do everything I could.

Obviously, I can’t do this alone. My hope is this posting attracts others who feel the same way. Besides its urgent message, the project is timely, marketable and an incredible opportunity for the right person(s). CLIMATE urgently needs a producer with passion for the project and the wherewithal to make it happen, and make it happen now.

If this project resonates with you, or if you are interested in helping further the cause in any capacity, however small, please check out the CLIMATE website www.climatethemovie.weebly.com, learn more about the cause, the screenplay, and contact me asap at debwd5@yahoo.com.

Thank you.

Deborah Whitaker

President and CEO Sonia Weinhaus says, “Live Lobster Group provides professional travel services specifically designed for the media production community. By combining the travel needs of many production companies and independent producers, we can pass on efficiencies to allow producers to spend their time and efforts on content instead of logistics.”

In addition, Live Lobster Group’s Media Production division, based in Hooksett, NH, produces original video for the web, integration into mobile apps and other distribution. Their current media project is sports recruiting videos for high school athletes. College coaches receive hundreds of recruiting videos every year and don’t have time to watch hours of unfocused game footage just to seek out one athlete. Live Lobster Group has consulted with coaches at all levels, so they know how to shoot and edit a package of what they want to see.

Live Lobster Group was formed in 2011 by partners Sonia Weinhaus (Pres./CEO) and Allen Pinney (EVP/CCO) who previously worked together on productions for the History Channel and PBS.

For more information about Live Lobster Group, please contact info@livelobstergroup.com or visit www.livelobstergroup.com.

TODD HARRIS, EXECUTIVE PRODUCER OF ‘THE KIDS ARE ALL RIGHT’ AND ‘CROOKED ARROWS’ One Day Seminar on Saturday, Oct. 29 at Boston's Intercontinental Hotel

Boston Casting is pleased to present a one-day seminar, “Producing The Independent Film: An Insider’s Perspective” taught by veteran Hollywood independent producer J. Todd Harris, CEO of Branded Pictures Entertainment and producer of 38 films. Harris has just wrapped "Crooked Arrows", which was shot in Boston this past summer.

The seminar will be held at Boston’s Intercontinental Hotel at 510 Atlantic Avenue on Saturday, October 29 from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m.

The in-depth class offers aspiring producers, and interested writers, directors and actors, a 6-hour practical seminar on producing the independent film in 2011 and beyond. Producer of five Sundance Film Festival entries, Harris will take attendees through the steps of making a picture: selecting material, developing the screenplay, assembling the creative team, approaching talent, creating a business plan, raising financing, pre-production, production, post-production, marketing and distribution. Additionally, he will discuss strategies and realities for producing a film outside Hollywood.

Harris felt the seminar could be of particular interest to New Hampshire-based filmmakers.

"There are so many pockets of creativity in states like New Hampshire, where aspiring filmmakers simply need to understand that the film business doesn't start in Santa Monica and end in Burbank," said Harris. "More now than ever, the filmmaking process has democratized - starting with production and extending to marketing and distribution. You don't have to live in Los Angeles or New York, but you do have to know how to get in their head and speak their language."

Harris executive produced the Golden Globe-winning and Academy Award-nominated "The Kids Are All Right", produced of the critically acclaimed Sundance entry "Bottle Shock", and produced the recently released "The Family Tree" and "Miss Nobody." Harris, who teaches producing at the Los Angeles Film School, earned his BA and MBA from Stanford and is 12-year member of the Motion Picture Academy, Producers Branch.

Those interested are encouraged to prepare by putting together a 60-second pitch of a movie project, and by watching one of Harris's recent features, particularly "Bottle Shock" or "Miss Nobody" (both available on Netflix), by visiting the website (www.crookedarrows.com) and Facebook page for "Crooked Arrows" and visiting Harris’s company site www.brandedpicturesentertainment.com.

For more information, please see registration information below:

REGISTRATION INFORMATION

Date: Saturday, Oct. 29, 10 a.m. - 4 p.m.
Location: The Intercontinental Hotel, 510 Atlantic Avenue, Boston
Cost: $149 $99 for SAG Members, Current University Students, and Early Bird Registrations through Saturday, October 15
To Register: Visit www.mediaperformanceinstitute.com or contact Andrew Fitch at mpi@bostoncasting.com, 617-254-1001, x4

As with the regular meet-ups, this gathering will provide filmmakers and members of the production industry with an opportunity to network with one another, with everyone having the chance to take a few minutes to introduce themselves and share information on their recent or upcoming endeavors (Yes, there is a time limit!) The meet-up will be moderated by Matthew Newton, director of the New Hampshire Film & Television Office, who will offer an update of what’s currently happening around the state. There will also be a networking session toward the end of the discussion at which attendees can make connections and talk further.

LAUNCHING A NEW HAMPSHIRE PRODUCTION COALITION
Friday, October 14, 2011
1-3 p.m.
Sheraton Portsmouth Harborside Hotel, Portsmouth, NH

The New Hampshire Film & Television Office has played an instrumental role in promoting the state for all types of media production projects, as well as supporting New Hampshire’s production industry by working to build an infrastructure from the ground up. The foundation has been poured—and now, for our industry to strengthen and expand there must be an association of professionals that can work in tandem with the Film & Television Office and continue to advocate on behalf of our filmmakers, craftspeople and ancillary support businesses. The discussion will focus on what this group should be and what goals should be met, including a film tax credit to better compete with other states for production. This panel will feature some of the founding members of what will become the New Hampshire Production Coalition and attendees will have the opportunity to be heard and get involved as the Coalition takes shape over the next few months.

Panelists:

Mark Constance - Producer/Director, a713production
Paul Durham - Chair, Entertainment, Media and Publishing Group, Sheehan Phinney Bass + Green PA
Debra Franchi - President, HHG Productions
Jessica Maher – Freelance Contract Administrator for Entertainment Contracts, AFTRA/SAG
Joe Maiella – VP, Sales & Global Crewing, Media Services

Moderator:

Van McLeod - Commissioner, New Hampshire Department of Cultural Resources

“There are a number of interesting things happening in film and television around the state right now, and we’re pleased to be working again with the New Hampshire Film Festival to bring information and good conversation to their attendees,” says Matthew Newton, director of the New Hampshire Film & Television Office. “Both of these programs will provide excellent networking opportunities for filmmakers visiting the Festival, and the afternoon panel in particular will be something industry professionals will not want to miss.”

Information on both programs, including panelist bios, are available on the New Hampshire Film & Television website at http://www.nh.gov/film. Led by Bill Humphreys, this "Producer's Overview" will present a broad-spectrum look at PPMTV, the purpose and process of public access television, and its web presence. A thorough explanation of PPMTV's facilities, procedures, policies, certification for equipment access, production and post-production courses, and content creation will be presented, as well as a tour of the facilities. This introductory forum will answer questions regarding content requirements, access to video and audio production equipment, the post-production process, and PPMTV programming. A one-hour session, it is recommended for anyone interested in the workings of PPMTV, what PPM has to offer the community, and how their involvement in storytelling can make a difference to Seacoast viewers.

If you have any questions about this event or Portsmouth Public Media in general, please contact Glenn Gardener at glenn.gardener@ppmtvnh.org.

Each of the judges had the opportunity to work closely with Producer Debra Hill during her impressive career; Hill produced hits such as HALLOWEEN, THE FOG, ESCAPE FROM LA, and THE FISHER KING.

Producers for Granite Creek include Dana Biscotti Myskowski of Green Chair Pictures in Henniker, NH; Aaron Wiederspahn of Either/Or Films in Keene, and Adam Richard Jones, a commercials director who lives in Henniker and works out of NYC; the trio will also write the short script. In addition, Wiederspahn will direct.

In addition, tremendously talented New Hampshire film artists are teaming up with fabulous filmmakers from the Boston area and from LA to produce a 3-5 minute short film. Locations Supervisor Nick Koloski has helped the team find a place to call home during the shoot: the giant warehouse on Mulberry Street, which is home to Time-Out Sports Bar and Grill, a.k.a. the crew’s commissary during the weekend.

As per the competition guidelines, all cast and crew are volunteering their time, and gear and food have been donated both by individuals and by Northeast rental houses. Many local businesses have also joined the spirit of the Debra Hill Fellowship, a 501(c)(3) that has been established to honor Hill’s commitment to paying it back and helping student producers break into the business.

Production officially begins at 5:01 p.m. Friday, Sept. 23 when the PGA announces the requirements of the film competition. After a quick brainstorming session, the core production team will break into small groups as one team writes the script, one designs the musical score, one fans out to prep and dress locations and to secure props, one begins assembling opening and closing film titles, and one designs the costumes for our actors.

On Saturday, Sept. 24 Granite Creek will shoot the entire film. About a dozen extras are on-call to join the team for some scenes, if necessary. Additionally, Saturday’s crew will swell with the addition of hair, make-up, and wardrobe crews, and additional production assistants. A stills photographer and a behind-the-scenes video crew will capture the magic of the day.

Sunday will be a quiet, mostly in-house day, as producers and directors work closely with the post-production team to complete the film. Should additional "B-roll" shots be necessary, Claremont residents may spy a small camera crew filming last-second ambiance shots of the charming city and countryside.

The deadline is 8 p.m. to upload the video over the Internet to the LA offices of the PGA via WithoutABox, a website that hosts film competitions from around the globe.

Numerous vendors and suppliers have generously donated items to the team including Granite Ledge Coffee of Canterbury, NH; Alyson’s Orchard of Walpole, NH; Time-Out Sports Bar & Grill in Claremont; Glass and Gear in Amherst, NH; The Performer’s Playground in Newport, NH; FastLights.com in Western Massachusetts; Chamberlain Springs, LLC, NH2O in Alton, NH; White Mountain Kettle Corn, LLC, in Henniker; Bagel Works of Keene, and more.

Special thanks to the City of Claremont for hosting the team during this endurance race to produce a film with about 60 crew members in 51 hours—something Granite Creek is hoping will bring increased appreciation for the area when the film is judged alongside entries from around the country, and in LA. Thanks also to the New Hampshire Film and Television Office for their support and guidance.

Post-production stills and a complete cast and crew list will be posted to the new Granite Creek website after the weekend. USA.gov provides answers to the public’s most common questions, at Answers.USA.gov, but videos need to be created to better explain some of the information.

You can create and enter separate videos in any of five categories, listed below. One winner will be selected from each category. A person is eligible to win multiple categories.

Your video will need to illustrate the how-to processes described in some of the most popular frequently asked questions about government benefits and services.

You can find the information to use in your video at the URLs listed below.

Here are the categories you can enter:

How do I check the status of my tax refund? (http://go.usa.gov/K3Q)
How can I apply for a government grant or loan? (http://go.usa.gov/K3U)
How can I find a job? (http://go.usa.gov/K3E)
How do I get a Social Security card? (http://go.usa.gov/K3m)
How can I change my address with various government agencies (e.g., Postal Service, Internal Revenue Service, and the Social Security Administration) when I move? (http://go.usa.gov/K3V and http://www.usa.gov/Citizen/Services/Address_Changes.shtml)

For complete details you can see the contest site: http://faq.challenge.gov/.
