'Mayors Against Illegal Guns' Bus Tour To Make Stop In Concord

Moose Hunting Lottery To Be Held Friday

New Hampshire Fish and Game officials will hold the annual drawing for moose hunting permits this Friday.

Wildlife Programs Specialist, Linda Verville, says Fish and Game received more than 14,000 applications this year.

“This year we are giving out a total of 275 permits, 233 go to residents and 42 go to non-residents.”

Names are drawn at random, though applicants who have never received a permit are given better odds.

Lottery results will be available online with alternates posted on the Fish and Game website.

Sen. Shaheen Calls For Action To Prevent Student Loan Rate Hike

U.S. Senator Jeanne Shaheen is calling for congressional action to prevent federal student rates from doubling next month.

If Congress does nothing, interest rates on subsidized Stafford Loans will increase from 3.4 percent to 6.8 percent on July 1.

At a roundtable discussion at Granite State College on Friday, Shaheen said Congress has a responsibility to prevent that from happening, especially at a time when Americans owe more on student loans than credit cards.

The motorcyclist killed Thursday morning in the Franconia Notch has been identified as Robin Staines, 47, of Pembroke, Massachusetts, according to state police.

Staines was traveling north on the two-lane section of I-93, failed to make the turn at the entrance of the former parking area for the Old Man of the Mountain.

He was thrown from his Harley-Davidson and was not wearing a helmet.

Passersby gave him CPR until an ambulance arrived but he died of his injuries at Littleton Regional Hospital.

N.H. Maple Syrup Production Levels Return To Normal

Maple syrup production returned to normal levels in the Granite State this year.

That’s according to a report issued by the U.S. Department of Agriculture on Thursday.

The report shows that 124 thousand gallons of maple syrup were produced in New Hampshire this year.

Last year, the state produced only 76 thousand gallons, due to the unusually warm weather.

The yield per tap also more than doubled in New Hampshire this year.

State Announces 'Secondary Case' In Hepatitis C Outbreak

State public health officials say another person has tested positive for Hepatitis C stemming from last year’s outbreak at Exeter Hospital.

That brings the total number to 33.

A former hospital employee was arrested last July in connection with the spread of the virus inside the cardiac catheterization lab. Prosecutors say David Kwiatkowski reused syringes on patients after injecting himself with powerful pain killers.

Dr. Jose Montero, the state’s public health director, says it appears this latest case, though, is from sexual contact.

One of the biggest and most contentious issues of this spring’s budgeting process remains whether or not the state should expand Medicaid. When the Supreme Court ruled last summer on the Affordable Care Act, it said the Federal government can’t force states to expand. Instead, states must be given a choice about growing the health care program for the poor.

Governor Hassan and the Democratically controlled House favor expansion, and the House included it in its proposed spending plan.

In a floor vote Wednesday, the New Hampshire House passed a bill known around the state house as the “auto-dealers bill of rights.”

The bill puts limits on the demands vehicle manufacturers can make on dealers – ranging from compensation rates for parts to frequency of facility upgrades.

Democratic Representative Ed Butler of Carroll urged his colleagues to vote for the legislation.

Health providers, small business owners and reform advocates attended a brainstorming session in Concord on Friday. State Insurance Department officials organized the event, seeking input on how best to implement the new health exchange in New Hampshire.

A range of ideas were offered, from social media campaigns to informational events at hardware stores to old-fashioned word of mouth. Participants stressed a need to reach all communities, including minority and non-English speaking groups, and to do so quickly.
