Year 10 describe famous people in Spanish

The boys in Year 10 have been learning how to describe people. We thought it would be a good idea to challenge them to find Spanish speaking celebrities that they could then describe.

The multimedia posters below are the result of this challenge. Not only have the boys written the descriptions themselves but they have also recorded them for you to hear (look out for the play button in each of the posters). Most posters also contain video clips of said celebrities speaking in Spanish. Did you know Barack Obama speaks fairly decent Spanish, as does Will Smith?

Further task for the boys: Please pick one of the posters below (not your own), read it and listen to the recording. Then please write a comment here outlining two things that you think that boy did well and why and one thing they could do better and how.

Here are a selection of Vokis from 8S on ‘Ma Zone’, which the boys made using Voki’s text-to speech technology. Although the animations do not speak with the boys’ voices, it is their words! What do you think?

Business Language Champions

Meet the winners of this year’s regional Business Language Champions competition, which was held on Monday 28th November at Ratcliffe College. We entered a team of five boys from German 6.1 and another team of five boys from Spanish 6.2 who were accompanied on the day by Mr Allerton.

Independent schools from all over the region were represented, including teams from the Girls’ School.

The boys took part in some challenges which included working as a team designing a newspaper front page in the foreign language and making presentations.

We are very proud to announce that our teams secured first – the German team – and second place - the Spanish team – in this competition, putting our linguists ahead of all the other independent schools that took part in it, which is an extraordinary achievement for the boys.

Broadway Film – The Well-Digger’s Daughter

The next foreign film to be shown at Broadway Cinema is called The Well-Digger’s Daughter. It is showing from Friday 9th until Thursday 22nd December.

‘Twenty-five years after he made his name acting in Claude Berri’s adaptations of two of Marcel Pagnol’s most famous novels, ‘Jean de Florette’ and ‘Manon des sources’, Daniel Auteuil returns to Provence for his first feature as a director. In 1940 18-year-old Patricia, the daughter of well digger Pascal, discovers she is pregnant. The father-to-be, Jacques, is not around – a fighter pilot, he is missing, presumed dead – and his wealthy family don’t want to have anything to do with Patricia. The simplicity of Auteuil’s direction gives the film its truly authentic charm, and the superb score by Alexandre Desplat (The King’s Speech) makes fine use of early 1940s period songs to heighten the atmosphere.’
