That’s just the way it is – the effect the festival has on the proceeding months of the year as bands who went down well in Texas continue to impress as we go. This time around we’ve got Brahms – a “ones to watch” status band, new album tracks from Errors, Gonjasufi, Dum Dum Girls, Oh No Ono, Phantogram, Alcoholic Faith Mission, Pivot, Holly Miranda as well as Swedish band Frederik (highly recommend their Trilogi album from last year), a track from Memory Tapes’ excellent Seek Magic album which is getting renewed spins here and a 2001 oldie from the Rebirth Brass Band. We finally recorded number eight last night, despite being overcome with random giddiness all day yesterday. Do you ever get like that? When you can’t help but do something silly by default. Anyway, I made it very difficult for Aoife when she was recording it cos I was like that. Poor girl. I did learn about Musical Youth though so it’s all good.

Rory from Ten Past Seven on stage at Mantua – July 2007

Everytime we do our monthly podcast, I’m convinced each one is better than the previous but I think this may be the month where this rings true! Twelve mighty tunes – some old and rare, some new and apparently rare.

Included are two b-sides from recent 7″ releases, one a Diplo remix of that “Notorious” Jamaica tune from Turbulence (which Boomkat says is rare but I bought it in Tower Records ferchrissakes!) and the Yo Majesty remix of The Go! Team’s “Doin it Right”. Also featured is New York Latin Hustle flavour from Seguida, cheesy Disney Ska, a surprisingly good Princess Superstar song from 2001, a new Prefuse 73 single, new Beirut, Hard Working Class Heroes Irish bands and an old blog favourite revisited.

I think this is the upbeat podcast I’ve been promising all summer. As the sun finally shone this weekend, it puts us in good stead for the next when we descend on Stradbally once again for the festival of the year. So to get you all pumped about the Electric Picnic which starts Friday, this month’s podcast is all Electric Picnic artists.

It can be the soundtrack to your preparations: frantically searching for timetables online, buying another tent because you weren’t arsed taking down that huge 12 man tent last year, deciding whether to brave it without wellies or the last minute dash for toilet roll.

I was going to make this an upbeat, summer podcast but 50-odd days of consecutive rain can obviously get a brotha down so it’s a bit more of a chilled out affair than usual with more guitar music than usual. I still had a chance to squeeze in a track from my favourite MC MF Doom as he has a re-released deluxe packaged version of “Mmm.. Food” out and we have a couple of bass stompers to round off July from Boxcutter and Prince Kong. We’re also highlighting the Remix Artist Collective with two remixes of theirs of The Shins & Tokyo Police Club back to back. Thanks once again to Aoife Mc for presenting. Represent!
