St. Thomas Carnival 2012: My Review

This year was St. Thomas Carnival's 60th anniversary. I usually don't attend carnival at home (St. Thomas) as often as I do other islands...the vibes are just different. Not better or worst...just different. I was very hopeful this year... I expected BIG tings and they kinda delivered.

I lost the battery for my camera in Trinidad so I don't have many pics. Here is how is spent my time at home for our carnival's 60th:

We didn't wasted any time. My first night is a blur. We started at Yatch Haven Grande for a Jazz on the Green type show. It was pretty cool. There was a nice turn out and the music was good! We moved on to Hubbly Bubbly Hookah Lounge for hummus and hookah. From there we ended up in Palm Passage at birthday party for a woman that I didn't not know. Even though we looked like the youngest party goers, we fit right in and it was perfect. You know old folks can party and the old men have lyrics cyan done. One older man asked me:

Old man: " Hi, do you keep the bottom on your feet smooth?'

Me: "um..yesss??"

Old man: "good, cause they would feel nice and smooth on my shoulders!"

I nearly died with laughter... and threw up a little in my mouth. I think I made him mad. He was sooo confident. Anyway, we danced, ate cake and I meet the birthday girl who I feel in love with. She is an amazing artist who can party.

Still on the move, we went to the carnival village to see Burning Flames mash up da place. They never disappoint. Wadadli massive was getting it in and we had a blast. Our last stop was a Santo (Dominican) bar/club. Lawd...these people can party. We left at 4am and they were still going.

The next day we woke up to no electricity so we spent the day on the beach.

My daddy made us a real Caribbean (Antiguan) breakfast which consisted of saltfish, boiled dumpling (wheat), sweet potato, boiled plantains, dasheen, spinach and boiled egg which I didn't have. YUMMY!! I couldn't move for an hour after I devoured this plate of food. LOL!

Glenda, I'm on the second page of my invoice to you. My dear friend had the idea to introduce the all inclusive jouvert band, J'ouvertnation, to St. Thomas' carnival. The next 4 day was consumed with planning promoting and executing J'ouvertnation. Between doing radio interviews and decorating our Double Decker trolley... I felt like I need a vacation while on vacation. All in all, J'ouvertnaion was a success. St. John carnival is next!

We played mas with Real Mas... much drama, but by the end of parade day, the rum numbed all the burns I got from the glue gun and the fact that the music truck experienced technical difficulties. Sugar Band indirectly saved us. Playing mas with Real Mas started out rough but I ended up having a pretty good time... will definitely play mas with them again.

Overall, I had a good time. The best part was making new friends while reconnecting with friends I haven't seen in YEARSSSSSS!

I tried to go see this movie while I was in Trinidad for carnival...didn't happen :( Looks like I'll miss it again cause I'll be at another carnival. Stick Fly on Broadway

Last weekend I saw Stick Fly on Broadway. All I knew was that Alicia Keys was one of the producers and the dude from Psych was in it (Juliette is obsessed with him). I had absolutely no expectations but I knew it had to be good if Juliette wanted to see it for a second time (I'm sure Dulé Hill was the main reason LOL).

I've seen several plays on Broadway and this is up there close to the top of my list. I will admit that by intermission I was a little worried and felt like I was watching your typical black reality show on Bravo or VH1. By the end...I wanted more! The entire cast was on point and the plot and characters developed so beautifully, that I forgot about my Bravo/VH1 theory. Patience...

They were all sooo good! I would absolutely see it again!!!!

Face Contouring for your Face Shape

Learning to contour your face can be life changing. Contouring my cheeks and highlighting under my eyes are a must. It makes a huge difference with out piling on the makeup and looking over done. Here is a good guide to get started:

“This is the infamous contour and highlight guideline made by the amazing Kevyn Aucoin”.

The main idea behind contouring is to use darker shades to recede certain areas of the face and lighter ones to highlight others. When using contours and highlights, the general notion is to transform the face into the “ideal” shapes—almond for the eyes and oval for the face. The reason these are considered ideal is based on their symmetry

This technique is good for people who want more definition to their face. It also has a slimming effect if that is what you are going for. This technique doesn’t have to be only for the face....works well on the cleavage too!

HOW TO SHAPE AND REDEFINE YOUR FACE:

When you contour you will change, accentuate, hide, strengthen and define your face

Think of contouring as painting a blank canvas. You apply foundation to even out your complexion. Then think of creating shape to your face.

The main principle is this:

Dark shading will make facial features recede

Light shading will make facial features more prominent

TO SCULPT YOUR FACE YOU WILL NEED:

Your true foundation color that matches your skin exactly

Your contour color that should be 2 shades darker than your foundation and with the same undertone

Your highlighting color that should be 1 to 2 shades lighter than your foundation and with the same undertone

APPLY AND BLEND, BLEND, BLEND

Follow the diagram below for your face shape to show you the placement of the contouring shade and the highlighting shade. Make sure you blend really well so the edges completely disappear so you don't end up with foundation lines.

NOW LOOK AT YOUR FACE TYPE TO SEE THE BEST WAY TO CONTOUR

OVAL FACE

An oval-shaped face is usually broader at the cheeks, tapering in slightly at both the forehead and the chin. Because of its symmetry, you do not need to contour and highlight your face. An oval face can support most makeup trends - whoohoo!

DIAMOND FACE

Contour at the cheeks to minimize width.

Highlight your forehead, under your eyes and your chin to draw attention to the center of your face.

RECTANGLE FACE

Contour on the corners of either side of your forehead and across the hairline.

Contour on either side of your jaw blending up to the bottom of your ear.

Highlight your forehead,under your eyes and your chin to draw attention to the centre of your face.

OBLONG FACE

Contour across the lower section of your chin to shorten your face length

Apply Blush to the apples of your cheek to widen your face.

HEART FACE

The heart-shaped face is wide at the forehead and curves down to a pointed or narrow chin, like an inverted triangle. If you have a heart-shaped face:

Contour at the temples and cheeks to diminish the width of your upper face.

Highlight your forehead, under your eyes and your chin to draw attention to the centre of your face.

TRIANGLE FACE

Contour on the jawline and cheeks to minimize the width.

Highlight your forehead, under your eyes and your chin to draw attention to the centre of your face.

SQUARE FACE

A square-shaped face is the same width at the forehead, the cheeks and the jaw. If you have a square-shaped face:

Contour on the corners of either side of your forehead

Contour on either side of your jaw blending up to the bottom of your ear

ROUND FACE

A round-shaped face is fuller, shorter, fairly wide, with full cheeks and a rounded chin.

When No one Is Looking - HIV AIDS in the Caribbean

I must commend all involved for putting together such a great short film in Antigua. HIV/AIDS is an issue that needs to be addressed in the Caribbean. However, I felt that this film implied that HIV/AIDS is a homosexual disease, focusing mostly on men contracting and transmitting the disease. When No One is Looking, should have a second episode that focuses on women and the importance of practicing safe sex.

From Kaiser Family Foundation:

The Caribbean has the second highest HIV prevalence rate in world, after sub-Saharan Africa, and AIDS is a leading cause of death among 15-44 year-olds in the region.

Women aged 15 and over comprise an increasing share of those with HIV/AIDS in the region, now accounting for 53% of adults aged 15 and over estimated to be living with HIV/AIDS, up from 46% in 2001.

The epidemic has always affected those who are young, and young people continue to be at risk. Young women are especially vulnerable. In some countries, HIV/AIDS prevalence rates among young women aged 15–24 are two to three times higher than rates among young men in the same age group.

CAREC, a public health information, service and consulting organization, dedicated to being the best at providing information that people need to improve health and prevent disease in the Caribbean.

When No One is Looking (2012) is based on the screenplay of local photographer and artist Zahra Airall. The short film is an ABS TV Production in collaboration with the Caribbean Broadcast Media Partnership on HIV/AIDS.

The film features the talent of Antiguan playwright Owen Jackson and newcomers to the screen Zarah Airall, Elijah James, and Walter Armstrong.

It centers around three characters; a married man about to have a baby with his wife, whose past suddenly comes back to haunt him; a young man who experiences rejection from his father; and a child who is abused by a family member.

The project was funded by the Caribbean Broadcast Media Partnership on HIV/AIDS. It premiered on Monday January 2, 2012 at 9 pm on ABS Television.

Carnival makeup ideas... if you're still looking for inspiration like I am. No face jewels for me this year, well that's what I'm saying now and that is liable to change lol. In my head, my heroin did not have face jewels, she had eyes and or lips that popped. So, I'm thinking I want to be adventurous with colors while keeping it pretty. My headpiece and mask has a lot going on and I have no plans on looking like a hero gone wrong...lol

Along with the King and Queen of the Band Competition, regular The Cultural Night show highlights Quadrille and other traditional ethnic dancers, cultural costumes, majorettes, traditional Clowns and Indians and the Cultural Activities Committee’s special gift to the audience...

9 Mile Music Festival

The 9 Mile Music Festival began as a labor of love, Pioneered by, Cedella Marley Booker. Over the years the festival has had other names including “The Caribbean Music Festival” finally evolving into what is known as the 9 Mile Music Festival today. This reggae music event is more than just your average “concert”, it has a commitment to doing good and spreading love. The 9 Mile Music Festival is responsible for collecting over two (2) million canned goods over its 18 year span, in an effort to continuously give back to its community. Four canned goods are required for entry, along with a purchased admission; the canned goods collected are then distributed to shelters in Miami & Jamaica.
