2010 has been quite a year for Melbourne two-piece Big Scary. International supports, national airplay, constant touring, sold out headlining shows and the release of four EP’s have seen the talented duo take heir varied sound to all corners of the country.

At the beginning of 2010, Big Scary announced they would be releasing four EPs dedicated to each of the seasons. Inspired by Mother Nature, each release was written and recorded in each respective season, and promised to be as varied as the seasons themselves. Inspired by the flurry of rich colour in autumn, the first drops of rain in winter, the blossom of new life in spring and the majesty of a summer thunderstorm.

Widely tipped as ones to watch by industry insiders, some thought the four seasons project a brave undertaking for the independent duo, doubting their ability to consistently release and tour this varied material. Instead, The Big Scary Four Seasons has served to show the breadth of talent and styles possessed by the versatile duo, with Big Scary recently announced as one of Triple J ’s 2010 ‘NextCrop ’ artists.

Featuring tracks from the three preceding limited edition seasonal EPs Autumn, Winter and Spring – including the infectious radio hit ‘Autumn’ from the EP of the same name, ‘Thinking About You’ the haunting lead track from the decelerated Winter EP and the thumping ‘Hamilton’, another runaway hit taken from third seasonal EP Spring. The Big Scary Four Seasons also includes four new tracks from Summer, which will be released exclusively as part of The Big Scary Four Seasons.

While the Melbourne duo may be more in tune with the schizophrenic weather patterns affecting their hometown than others, The Big Scary Four Seasons taps into talents which have seen Big Scary’s Tom Iansek and Jo Syme tour with a diverse range of bands including Editors, Florence and The Machine, British India, Vasco Era, Birds of Tokyo, Little Red, Midlake and Hungry Kids of Hungary.

Big Scary’s debut album is due to be released October 2011.

With high praise from Pheonix’ Thomas Mars, who has declared them his favourite new band, the adoration of recent Bond baddie Matthieu Almaric and a launch for their debut album at the Cannes Film Festival, it is fair to say the Fortune are already riding high in their native France.

Formed by members of the highly rated Abstrakt Keal Agram and Snookut to take their previously all electronic music into vocal and nu-pop directions and with Cassius’ Pierrick Devin at the production controls, the debut album from Fortune melds dance sensibilities to pop structures to devastating effect, displaying a host of dance based influences from disco to house to techno but with an overriding desire to create songs rather than tracks.

From the lugubrious bass and bleeps of forthcoming single ‘Under The Sun’ released October 18th, all Chic style groove and handclaps to the rock stomp of ‘Bully’, the downbeat synth pulses of ‘Tonight’ to the new wave choppy guitars of ‘Mission’, ‘Staring At The Ice Melt’ defies easy categorization aside from the simple but effective label of great pop music. On a recent UK tour with Does It Offend You Yeah, the trio of Lionel Pierres, Pierre Lucas and Herve Loos ably demonstrated that their initial impulse, to create a dance music that translated into the live arena, had been completely fulfilled with new fans created at every date.

HUSKY RESCUE – ‘THEY ARE COMING’(DAVE GRAHAM REMIX)

Following the release of its third full-length, Ship of Light, Finnish electronic-leaning indie sextet Husky Rescue let go of the stems from its “They Are Coming” single, handing them over to remixers Warrior One , Halogen, Kinema, and, here, Dave Graham.

The producer took the original song’s hushed vocal performance and set it atop a slowly swirling mass of amorphous sonics, lilting string melodies, and almost inaudibly soft, hand-plucked guitar rhythms. It’s a delicately made remix with the majority of Graham’s attentions paid to controlling the subtle rise and fall of every fragile element he saw fit to include.

THE HUSH NOW – CONSTELLATIONS

It’s not often that a band comes along and sweeps fans, bloggers and critics off their feet before playing a single gig. That was the case last year after Boston quintet The Hush Now released their self-titled debut. As the Boston Phoenix put it, the album meshed “lush sugar-spun melodies of shoegaze’s dreamy heyday” to “the hooky muscle of bands like Guided by Voices and Built To Spill.”

Produced by David Newton of The Mighty Lemon Drops and released last October, the debut climbed independent radio top 100 charts and drew comparisons to Prefab Sprout, Teenage Fanclub, and The Ocean Blue, among others. Blog buzz and radio play by BBC 6 further fueled interest in the band. All the while, the band had already finished recording album number two.

After a tour of the west coast, The Hush Now went back into the studio and put the finishing touches on their sophomore effort, Constellations which hits radio in the US and UK in Feb 2010. Of the album’s first single, Hoping and Waiting, the UK Music Review writes, “a little Stone Roses, a dash of Guided By Voices, a smidgen of Flaming Lips and a dose of Yo La Tengo; one of those classic pop tunes that pop up from time to time and catch you pleasantly off guard. This is superior indie pop from a band well worth keeping a very close eye and ear on.”

Entering the world of Bodebrixen, means entering the lives of Andreas Brixen and Aske Bode. Two Danish boys, whose hearts beat for music that makes you want to dance and smile, and acknowledge your true geeky self. The love for happy and unpretentious pop music, and the nature of the boys means that this band is a unique exception in Denmark.

The boys met in 2006 at a jazz summer camp. As they decided to team up, they entered MySpace, and within three weeks they landed a record deal. They didn’t believe the label at first, ‘cause, as Aske puts it: “The demo wasn’t THAT good”. But in the following period, Bodebrixen created a lot of media attention. Especially blogs and radiostations outside Denmark loved the band – and that also took them by surprise: Personally I do not get it! These people, who listen to so much music….what do they want with our little band from Denmark?”

The music is placed in the tension field between I’m From Barcelona and The Whitest Boy Alive. The song writing in Bodebrixen takes a lot of inspiration from Swedish song writing tradition, and the craftsmanship of writing the good, simple song. Their lyrics have a distinct touch of irony and sweet bitterness, that is rarely heard in pop music.

In 2008 Bodebrixen released their self-titled debut album. Now they are re-releasing it for a hungry, international crowd, remixing the sound and adding even more power to the pop. The new album is titled: What’s inside’s what’s outside. “We had 50% hits on our first album – now we have 80 %. Our sound has been improved, but without compromising what has always been our mission; having a heart in all of our songs. I see this record as a “Hello-hi-world-here-we-are” – statement, which will be followed by something even bigger. We have infinitely great expectations”, says Aske. Bodebrixen’s nickname as the most important, undiscovered band in Denmark should soon be out of order. Bodebrixen is ready to conquer the international music scene.

They enter the stage with 7 live band members and bring with them a ton of instruments. With well-written songs and multi-instrumental arrangements, confetti and balloons they build up their festive music. The set-list is filled with danceable tunes, pumped up with bongo drums and na-na-na-na-na-na-choir.
