Susan welcomes 2012 presidential candidate Dennis Andrew Ball to the show Thursday to talk about his platform. He contends, among other things, that the nation needs to switch now from fossil fuels to solar power and that the “gay agenda” has no place in politics and that it is a threat to the American nuclear family. It’s your chance to hear directly from a presidential candidate.

On Tuesday Scott Gerber of Tube Dude joins Susan to discuss code enforcement and where the line is drawn. His business is one of several that have come under the eye of code enforcers. A competitor, Adam Nitterauer, was recently made to change his Yellowman installation in order to satisfy code enforecers. Join the debate, the phone lines are always open at 941-373-1220.

Les McCurdy from McCurdy’s Comedy Theatre stops by on Casual Friday.

McCurdy’s Comedy Theatre was established in 1988. For ten years, it was located at the Holiday Inn Marina. There was a short run at The Big Kitchen on Clark Road, before the move to its current location in the nostalgic Teatro Theatre. The Theatre underwent almost a complete facelift and was redesigned to meet the specifications of McCurdy’s. If you are a long time resident, you will notice that we kept some of the original architecture. The large front display, the statues in the courtyard, the statuettes and arches in the Theatre, and the chandelier over the exit are all from the old Teatro.

Over the past 22 years, comedians who have performed at McCurdy’s read like a Who’s Who list of the greatest names in comedy: Jeff Foxworthy, Chris Rock, Darrell Hammond, Larry Miller, Tommy Chong, Elayne Boosler, Soupy Sales, Judy Tenuta, Pat Paulsen, Jeff Dunham, Jimmie “JJ” Walker, Jim Breuer, Richard Lewis, Larry “The Cable Guy”, Kevin Pollack, Ron White, Ralphie May, David Brenner and Bobcat Goldthwait. McCurdy’s has also produced charity concerts with such comedic legends as The Smothers Brothers, Phyllis Diller, and Bob Newhart.

Our Guest Thursday is GWIZ. Learn about how the science & technology center rose from humble beginnings to become a Sarasota attraction and educational asset. Gulfcoast Wonder & Imagination Zone – GWIZ – began as the Gulf Coast World of Science (GCWS) in December 1990. In October 1991, the GCWS opened to the public with only 1,000 square feet and just ten hands-on exhibits. GCWS was soon granted membership in the Association of Science & Technology Centers (ASTC) and ten months later GCWS expanded to 6,000 feet.

In May 1993, recognizing the educational and cultural value the science center added to the community, the Sarasota City Commission voted to provide GCWS with a new permanent home, the former Selby Library building. In December 1997, the city commission reconfirmed its commitment to provide the bay front facility to the science center and a 20-year lease for the building was signed in January 1998. With the lease secured, the board implemented plans for the move to the new facility.

The Board worked with Hands-On, a nationally recognized museum planning company, to create a fresh image for the evolving science center. In May 1998 the Hands-on Science and Technology Center was reborn. With a name change to the Gulfcoast Wonder & Imagination Zone, “G.WIZ” moved into the newly renovated site in June of 2000 and proudly opened its doors to the public on August 26th, 2000. The $3.5 million 33,000 sq. ft. facility located downtown on Sarasota’s bay front was the perfect place for GCWS to be transformed into a world-class science and technology center.

Shaun Merriman from Gateway bank will be Kent’s guest on Spotlight on Sarasota Business. A 25-year banking veteran, Shaun began organizing Gateway Bank in November, 2006, during the most adverse banking climate seen in Southwest Florida in decades. He authored a convincing business plan, raised $19.5 million in capital, and assembled a notable board of directors and a talented banking staff. Shaun then took the aggressive approach to open three banking centers within the first 12 months of operation, which is virtually unheard of. Under Shaun’s leadership, Gateway Bank has grown to over $170 million in total assets, and reached sustained profitability in just 31 months of operation. By comparison, most start-up banks do not reach profitability until their third or fourth year of operation.

Prior to organizing Gateway Bank, Shaun served as Southwest Florida’s Area Executive for AmSouth Bank in Sarasota. He oversaw 45 Banking Centers in Manatee, Sarasota, Charlotte, Lee and Collier counties. Over two-thirds of Shaun’s career was spent with SouthTrust Corporation. He held several senior leadership positions including Executive Vice President and Senior Lender, Senior Officer (Commercial Banking), and President and CEO of SouthTrust’s Suncoast Market. Shaun is a graduate of the University of Wisconsin system with a major in Finance and a minor in Accounting. He is also a graduate of Wisconsin School of Commercial Banking and The Center for Creative Leadership in Greensboro, North Carolina. He is active in the Sarasota community currently serving as board chair for Greater Sarasota Chamber of Commerce, trustee board member for Doctors Hospital, board member and Corporate Secretary for Team Tony Cancer Foundation, and board member and past Chairman for the United Way of Sarasota County.

Shaun is a recipient of the 2009 (Bronze) and 2010 (Silver) President’s Volunteer Service Award, a national award recognizing over 100 hours and over 250 hours respectively of community service in one year.
