I had the pleasure to take part in the 'Homeroom' group show at Subtext Gallery in San Diego.

The show was curated by the lovely Christina Conway (Above image by Soey Milk).
Homeroom attempts to rediscover the nostalgia of youth and innocent creativity. Each artist for this exhibition found a piece from their childhood and reinterpreted it in their current style.

FANEXPO 2011

It's that time of year folks, the birds are singing, the sun is shining, and kids are ready to d-d-d-d-d-d-duuuel! (....I was more of a Metabots kind of guy to be honest)

FANEXPO IS HERE!!! The Con opens tomorrow and runs for the next 4 days (August 25th-28th). This is my first year being seating in the professional section, which is very exciting! My table number is P004-B. I'll be doing sketches, ink drawings, and painting commissions all weekend, plus I'll have some new giclee prints, sketches, zines, buttons and more available. I will also be keeping very good company with the likes of Mike Del Mundo, Kagan McLeod, Kalman Andrasofszky, Juan Carlos Solon, Yuta Onoda, and a whole slew of other talented guys. Come on by and say hi! (and bring snacks if you can)

Hello friends,

it feels like it's been long time since I've updated. I've been a little under the gun lately trying to get a lot of work done, so i decided to take a small internet hiatus. Things are nearing a finish so hopefully I'll be able to start sharing more regularly again soon.

But! I do have some things to share now!

Opening tomorrow is 'A taste of things to come' group exhibit at Spoke Art in San Francisco. The show has a pretty stellar lineup of artists including my wickedly talented pals Sam Wolfe Connelly and Rodrigo Luff, both of whom will be having solos with Spoke in the coming year.

Power in Numbers

The wonderful folks over at Gallery Nucleus have an ongoing show called Power in Numbers, where they've asked artists to contribute works no bigger than 5" x 7". Much of the proceeds from the show will be going towards select charities such as the Red Cross, World Wildlife Fund, and Unicef. I was able to contribute a graphite drawing as well as a small ink study.

The price range for all the pieces in the show is very affordable, so please buy some art and take pleasure in helping a good cause. The piece should be up on the site soon, if you're interested in purchasing either of the pieces please visit the Gallery Nucleus site here or get in touch with the folks via phone or email.

I will be doing illustrations for Mike Carey's new book The Steel Seraglio, which is being co-written by his lovely wife Linda and their daughter Louise. I had the pleasure of having dinner with Mike and Linda when they were in town for a set of book readings. Just two of the most wonderful and interesting people!

Many of you might recognize Mike from his comic work with Marvel, DC, and most recently the Vertigo series The Unwritten, illustrated by Peter Gross and covers by Yuko Shimizu.

This illustration depicts one of the central characters in the novel, Rem, who is an oracle of sorts. The piece is part of a set of promotional prints for the book, which you'll be able to pick up at the readings for the book, as well as few conventions coming up.

It was really fantastic to hear about his experiences in the industry, and to discuss what the collaborative writing process was like for Sergalio. Getting to know clients and fellow creatives has to be one of the best perks of this lifestyle!

Some good news! My & piece was selected to be in this year's Luerzer's Archive - 200 Best Illustrators. I'm proud to be in the company of some pretty great artists including Kagan McLeod, Michael Byers, Yuta Onoda, and Joe Morse. You can pick it up in your look book shop.

It doesn't stop there! The piece seems to really have some legs, as it went on to be chosen for American Illustration 30 and the Society of Illustrators Traveling Exhibition. It will be traveling to schools all through out the States. Exciting!

Hey everyone,
just wanted to do a quick post up and reminder that this weekend is Toronto ComiCON : Fan Appreciation Day. It's one of Hobbystars featured cons in Toronto, and this one is free admission! So come out and say hi. I'll be selling a lot of prints and merchandise, along with some original sketches and you can always commission a drawing or two as well. Also for those of you who aren't followers and those you are, Juan Solon, Chad Covino and I have started up Hawk and Squirrel again! We've been recording a lot of different material, for some more multimedia episodes, along with getting back to the podcast itself. Quentin Vs. Coen

This coming Thursday, I will be taking part in the show "Quentin vs. Coen" at Bold Hype Gallery in New York. It's a themed group show based on the works of Quentin Tarintino and the Coen Brothers.

I had a difficult time choosing what movie to base the piece on, I was circling around Fargo for a little bit, but decided on Kill Bill in the end. I posted few images of the progress for the piece.

I'm always a little hesitant to take on commissions these days, it feels like a gamble half the time. In some cases the direction can be so heavy handed that it really feels like labor. This was not one of those cases. The level of trust and freedom was great; given enough guidelines that I could build a nice box to work in and out of, and I was allotted the chance to pay homage to my favourite brotherhood, the Pre-Raphealites.

I tried to consistently document the process of the piece, you can see some areas where I get caught up in a certain nuance and ultimately have to scrap it to make the image work as a whole.

I'm working on a few more of these dream projects right now. I can't wait to share them with you.

Rather than spend this entire post listing the ways in which Tessar Lo and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs are similar (I already did that in a draft, and I got it into the double digits),

I'll just say this, I've seen the work, and much like Karen O, Tessar Lo puts on a helluva show! (rhyming)

This Friday is the opening of his latest solo exhibition, "MAPS", at Show & Tell Gallery in Toronto. From what I've seen I was sincerely moved...you'll not want to miss it.

Also in the second gallery, is my main man Andrew Hem. He's prepared a number of paintings, sculptures and drawings for the show.

Toronto's World of Witchcraft and Wizardry

Hey everyone! Get your cloaks and wands ready, it's that time of the year again! Wingardium leviosa!! (get it, cause it's "Wizard" World? What else did you expecto patronum? eh? eh?)

I was really happy to hear from the folks over at Wizard World, who invited me to attend this year's Comic Con in Toronto. This is my first convention as an Invited artist, which is crazy! I'm really looking forward to it. Along with a lot of prints of my original illustration work, I'm going to have two new prints, zines, buttons, postcards and more. I will also be selling original sketches and drawings of some very and not so very nerdy things. Check out the Wizard world site here, for all the information on tickets, times and guests.

A few other little bits of news,

I was recently invited to started blogging over at Illostop. There are a lot of really talented illustrators contributing including Chris Whetzel, Victo Ngai, Jason Raish, Edward Kinsella and many more. I'm really proud to be in such great company. I posted a few days ago discussing the process for the covers, feel free to check it out and have a read through the other articles.

Phil Noto, SPECTACULAR comic book artist, is having a solo show in NYC this month. Here's a link. If you guys could do me a solid and go check out the show in my stead, that would be really rad of you.

I'll be attending quite a few conventions and expos this year, along with a few shows in the works, and some really fun new projects, but more on that later.

As this is sort of big reunion for these two characters, we wanted to have something that really set the tone, and still payed homage to the two's original pairing. Holy Moley! What an amazing way to set off the new year!

Last week I traveled down to New York City with my main man Andrew.
I know it's something that's said by everyone who travels there, but it really is such an amazing city. I'm still on a bit of a high from the trip. The scale of the everything is what gets to me. Not only in the sense of size, but it's just such a huge place with so much room, you want to try and fill it with all your ambitions. And you can never out grow it either. I think that's what leaves me with this great feeling...that and all the food, art, people, drinks, culture, etc.

This was the first time I'd been able to travel to NYC for work as well as for pleasure, which was a fantastic change of pace.

We were in town for the Society of Illustrators 53: Sequential and Uncommissioned Award gala, where I received a Silver Medal for my '&' piece.

I said it that night (in a very haphazard non-Denzel Washington style speech), but I just wanted to say it again here...to be recognized for an award is incredible. But to be recognized for an award by my peers, is truly an honour. Thank you so much to the Society, the jury, and to all my fellow exhibitors. It was really humbling to have my work be apart of such an amazing show.

Do U Niq Lo?

Not to get into this too much, but this place is seriously overwhelming we had to make two trips.

We were lucky enough to be able to visit the New Marvel head offices and grab lunch my AMAZING editors Jeanine and Jody. This really is the place where dreams come true!

The wise and talented Victo Ngai...always the picture of grace and poise.

One of our lovely servers, Courtney, who spent the entire night tempting us with tasty treats.

A great time was had by all! We got to meet up with Martin, who also took home a very well deserved Silver Medal that night.

We spent out last day in NYC visiting Marty's studio in Brooklyn before heading out to his opening in Chelsea, and then onto the rest of the evenings 'frivolities'.

Thanks again to Martin, Billy, Matt, Jeanine, Jody and everyone who showed us so much hospitality through out our trip! And a HUGE thank you to Andrew for being just the raddest. You're a Prince, bro!

A bid farewell to twenty-ten. Thank you for all the incredible opportunity, and friendships that you brought.
