It’s 2 : 43 PM on day 1009 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to pray, brush my teeth, read Deuteronomy 26, publish my Disability of the Day feature, tweet and Facebook about my campaign - no luck – stretch my hamstrings, take off my dirty hoodie and t-shirt and put on a clean t-shirt and jacket, practice sitting up straight to strengthen my core muscles, feed myself All Bran Flakes and scrambled eggs for breakfast and practice typing with both hands.

This morning while changing I realized I should find joy in the little things I can do sure I can’t do as much as I want to by myself yet but I’ve made huge progress in the last couple of years and that’s something to celebrate. Are you able to find joy in the little things you can do?

It’s 2 : 13 PM on day 1008 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to pray, brush my teeth, feed myself All Bran Flakes for breakfast, read Deuteronomy 25, publish my Disability of the Day feature, tweet and Facebook about my campaign - no luck – practice sitting up straight to strengthen my core muscles and practice typing with both hands.

This morning someone was spewing all sorts of venom at me and this Bible verse came to mind bless those who curse you bless and do not curse whatever someone says or does to you, you can choose to rise above it knowing that whatever you do or say reflects on you. Do you have it in you to bless and not curse those who curse you?

It’s 2 : 52 PM on day 1 007 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to brush my teeth, feed myself All Bran Flakes for breakfast, pray, read Deuteronomy 24, publish my Disability of the Day feature, prepare and publish my Kid of the Week feature, tweet about my campaign - no luck today but Rema Mathews made a $50 donation to my campaign last night (thanks again aunty)- listen to music – I love Us Against The World by Westlife whenever I hear it I think of my sister when people are blatantly staring at me I would be most likely to ignore it whereas my sister would be most likely to look them in the face and say what are you staring at - and practice typing with both hands.

A few days ago I read What About Alex on Emma’s Hope Book – a post about how society is outraged when a parent kills his/her child and sympathetic when the child happens to have special needs – and I realized once again that society doesn’t value the lives of “disabled” people as much as they value the lives of “non-disabled” people why else would the media portray a woman who stabbed her autistic son to the death as the victim.

Sometimes you try your hardest and still fail miserably – that’s what I keep learning.

It’s 5 : 08 PM on day 1006 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to finish reading Cross My Heart by Abigail Strom – the book is about uber-responsible cardiac surgeon Micheal and his rockstar next door neighbor Jenna and how they learns to love each other in spite of their differences I am a hopeless romantic so I liked it if you like romance novels I recommend this book – publish my Disability of the Day feature, brush my teeth, feed myself All Bran Flakes for breakfast, go to the doctor – I’ve been coughing for a couple of days so I thought I’d go have it checked out and it’s a good thing I did because it turns out I have Bronchitis I should be fine after I finish my antibiotics - go visit family and watch Gambit with my sister at the Hamingways Mall - the movie was about an art curator (played by Colin Firth) who decides to seek revenge on his abusive boss (played by Alan Rickman) by conning him into buying a fake Monet honestly it didn’t like it that much but if you like movies like Oceans Eleven this movie might be for you.

Last night I decided I wouldn’t go to sleep until I raised $100 for the Not For Sale Campaign through my campaign suffice to say I failed miserably I didn’t even raise $1 I just ended up really tired but hey I tried my best and that’s all I could ask of myself.
It’s 4 : 40 PM on day 1005 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to pray, brush my teeth, stretch my hamstrings, take off my dirty turtleneck and shirt and put a clean t-shirt on – it turns out it’s easier for me to take my turtleneck off laying down so from today onwards I’ll just do that why make things harder than they need to be -practice sitting up straight to strengthen my core muscles, feed myself a peanut butter sandwich for breakfast, watch movies with my sister and her friends, feed myself rice and curry for lunch and finish watching the movie we were watching.

Today I spent the whole day watching old movies with my sister and her friends which was nice because I usually do the same things day after day. Do you sometimes do things you wouldn’t normally do just for the sake of doing something different?

It’s 4 : 23 PM on day 1004 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to brush my teeth, feed myself an sweet potato with yogurt for breakfast, pray, read Deuteronomy 21, publish my Disability of the Day feature, practice sitting up straight to strengthen my core muscles, tweet and Facebook about my campaign - no luck – and practice typing with both hands.

Yesterday a close relative of ours left a message for my dad asking him to call him my dad thought it was urgent so he called the person it turns out the person on the other end of the line wanted to tell my dad about the new treatment for paralysis he heard or read about I know the person on the other end of the line meant well but I’m so sick and tired of people trying to fix or cure me over the years people have suggested all sorts of things to help me get “better” I just wish they would understand that I’m not something broken that needs to be fixed. Do you believe that someone is not okay if they are not exactly like everybody else?

I deserve to have fun – that’s what I learned today

It’s 3 : 37 PM on day 1003 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to brush my teeth, stretch my hamstrings, practice sitting up straight to strengthen my core muscles, feed myself an egg sandwich for breakfast, fix technical problems with the laptop – somehow malware got on this laptop and it was interfering with this blog thankfully it was an easy problem to fix – publish my Disability of the Day feature, pray, read Deuteronomy 20, tweet and Facebook about my campaign - no luck – and practice typing with both hands.

Today I realized I deserve to have some fun too for the longest time when I wasn’t helping people or bettering myself I would feel guilty like I was wasting my life or something but today I remembered the immortal words of John Lennon time you enjoyed wasting, was not wasted. Do you feel guilty every time you do something pointless but fun?

Sometimes people you’ve never met can teach you the greatest lessons – that’s what I keep learning :)

It’s 2 : 57 PM on day 1002 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to pray, brush my teeth, stretch my hamstrings, practice sitting up straight to strengthen my core muscles, read Deuteronomy 19, publish my Disability of the Day feature, tweet and Facebook about my campaign - no luck – feed myself an egg sandwich for breakfast and practice typing with both hands.

This morning thinking of Nelson Mandela this quote came to mind freedom is what you do with what has been done to you imagine being put in prison for twenty-seven years for doing nothing wrong and then forgiving the people who imprisoned you I couldn’t have done it Nelson Mandela has taught me more about perseverance and forgiveness than anybody else on the planet. Have people you’ve never met taught you some of life’s greatest lessons?

It’s 12 : 57 PM on day 1 001 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to pray, brush my teeth, read Deuteronomy 18, publish my Disability of the Day feature, tweet and Facebook about my campaign - no luck - stretch my hamstrings, practice sitting up straight to strengthen my core muscles, feed myself an avocado sandwich for breakfast and practice typing with both hands.

A few days ago my hero Nelson Mandela was admitted to the hospital with a lung infection and ever since then people all over the world have been praying for his speedy recovery I myself am a little conflicted as to what to pray for on the one hand I, like the rest of the world, want him to live forever on the other hand I don’t want him to suffer so I have decided to pray that Madiba be at peace how ever that happens.

We don’t always get what we deserve –that’s what I keep learning.

It’s 2 : 57 PM on day 1 000 of my journey towards independence and I’ve managed to brush my teeth, pray, read Deuteronomy 17, publish my Disability of the Day feature, publish my Kid of the Week feature, tweet and Facebook about my campaign - no luck - stretch my hamstrings, feed myself All Bran Flakes for breakfast, tweet and Facebook about my campaign some more- still no luck although someone did promise to donate I suppose that’s something - and practice typing with both hands.

As I sit at our dining table typing this I feel sluggish and bloated which sucks because I eat lots of fibre, drink boatloads of water and exercise to avoid the constipation that comes with having Cerebral Palsy I try so hard to do to everything right and life still treats me like crap it’s just so unfair. Are you aggrieved when you do most things right and life still treats you like crap?
