Aaja Aaja from Kaminey

Aahoon Aahoon from Love Aaj Kal

If it is music and beats in Aaja Aaja which attract you, Aahoon Aahoon got unmatchable lyrics with music – both songs make you drool and move out of your unwillingness. These have got class to make you like them.

Aahoon Aahoon has got Punjabi touch and that makes me love it more (though lyrics are taken from another Punjabi song) but the lyrics are meaningful as well which make sense for listening to it. There is another song in same album Love Aaj Kal- Ajj Din Chadheya which has wonderful comparison of beauty in its lyrics sung by traditional singer.

These are recommended to listen at least once.

A problem which makes you recall your old stupid days once again, the one which might make you feel as if you have wasted your day in resolving it. In the end, when you find out the solution which was actually that simple, you might think that it is right to to call it as a day wasted.

In my case, I preferred to call it a day well utilized to learn something basic which we generally prefer to forget or put in backside of memory. This was the day when I wasn’t able to find solution to a problem which might have not taken more than 10 minutes to a software kid if he had been knowing what exactly has to be done. For me, it went on and on for more than 8 hours as parallel activity with my work to find out the dead simple solution.

The problem in my case was that a specific file type wasn’t opening in the way it should have opened in my favorite IDE (Eclipse). It was being opened in different color syntax and I wasn’t able to get code assist/content assist in the way I was expecting for JSP files. I copied/recopied/re-re-copied and so on… the fresh installation of IDE, tried to compare it with the one I was working on, exchanged the core files and experiments in as many different ways as I could but still the problem remained the same. Yeah, of course, (I know you are brilliant enough to have already thought that out) - googled again and again and again in all these hours. Also tried to migrate my existing setup to fresh setup but of no use. Finally (or perhaps not) I had started thinking of giving up on all my tries. Just then this simple piece of code over web brought sparkle in my eyes -

You have missed out one thing that we have to make the ABC viewer as the default viewer for *.xyz files under Windows->Preferences->general->Editors->File Associations.

Thanks to the brilliant lady who provided the unwanted and perhaps not so important solution to that problem – not to forget it was what exactly I wanted and hence wasn’t useless in my case at all. Once again many thanks to this intelligent gal for this simple looking but generally overlooked solution. In this specific case, I had to go to File Associations inside Eclipse and change the association of my file to different/default editor. Stupid me!

In general for any file, if we aren’t able to view a file in the way we want it to appear, all we have to do is to change the editor in which it opens.

Yay yay yay, I am feeling amused while you are smirking.

Still I will call it a day well spent learning the basics than have wasted it.

Another such stupid mistake is to open Javascript extensive websites in Internet Explorer (6/7/8) with default settings. By default, IE has Javascript disabled (don’t know what made intelligent developers and GUI specialists at Microsoft decide that!!). So in order to view those websites properly, you better first enable the Javascript in Internet Explorer or you will remain fooled like me finding the exact problem with website content.

In my case, to enable Javascript in IE7/IE8, I followed following steps:

Tools > Internet Options > Security > Custom Level > Scripting > Enable > OK > Yes > OK

You can find different steps to be followed for enabling Javascript in different browsers at this location.

PS: It was told once long back in past – it all depends on perception.

Enjoyed IPL 2009 thoroughly. Liked the way Namaste was told by representative Mr. Duma. His address was one of the best speeches in IPL I have seen so far. Lots of love all the way to South Africa for hosting this year’s IPL.

PS: Only disappointing thing throughout this tournament was Lalit Modi’s power-show-off. Hope he learns to handle power appropriately or gets taught for same.

Apex court orders Rs.10 mn compensation for medical negligence

Nearly two decades after Bangalore-based Infosys engineer Prashanth S. Dhananka became paralysed waist down after a botched surgery, the Supreme Court ordered the Nizam Medical Institute of Hyderabad to pay him a record compensation of Rs.10 million, while praising him for fighting the case himself though confined to a wheelchair.

Ordering the compensation for medical negligence to Dhananka, a bench of Justice B.N. Agrawal also asked the apex court’s registry to send the verdict to the victim through registered post at his address in Bangalore.

The bench also recorded its ‘deep appreciation’ of Dhananka for his having argued the entire case on medical concepts himself in the apex court with the deftness of a lawyer.

Justifying the payment of the compensation, the court said, the sum is justified ‘keeping in mind that a brilliant career has been cut short and there is, as of now, no possibility of improvement of his physical conditions’.

Dhananka, son of a Bharat Heavy Electrical Limited (BHEL) employee, was admitted to the Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences in September 1990 after complaints of unexplained intermittent fever. Doctors from BHEL hospital referred him to the Hyderabad hospital for ‘further’ tests, which showed a large tumour in his left chest cavity. After an X-ray and a CT scan confirmed this, he was asked to undergo a biopsy.

Though the tumour was found to be benign, doctors decided to remove it fearing that it might later exert pressure on his respiratory, cardio-vascular and neurological systems. The doctors feared it could also later turn malignant.

A team led by a cardio-thoracic surgeon removed the tumour. In the process, a part of his ribs had to be cut. After the surgery, Dhananka, developed paralysis of the lower portion of the body, including legs.

No allegation of medical negligence was made then. But, six months later, Dhananka’s father wrote a letter to the institute in 1991, alleging negligence.

In 1993, Dhananka moved the NCDRC seeking damages of about Rs.50 million. The commission held the doctors negligent and directed the institute to pay Rs.1.4 million to him and Rs.150,000 to his father.

The institute moved the apex court challenging the NCDRC finding that it was guilty of negligence.

It contended that it had not associated a neuro-surgeon in the surgery from the beginning and had not exchanged any opinion with sister institutes in India and abroad.

Dhananka also approached the apex court in 1999 saying that the compensation awarded to him by the consumer court was inadequate. The court had reserved its ruling on the two cross-appeals on Sep 17 last year.

While calculating the Rs.10 million compensation, the bench accounted Rs.2.5 million for the loss of his prospective earning, anther Rs.2.5 million for his medical care, Rs.1.08 million for his physiotherapy, and Rs.1.44 million for his nursing and care, among other costs.

Earlier, the Madras High Court had in May 1993 ordered Apollo Hospital to pay compensation of around Rs.2.9 million to former national table tennis champion V. Chandrasekhar for medical negligence in treating him. The ruling had been upheld by the apex court later.

It is August. In a small town on the South Coast of France, holiday season is in full swing, but it is raining so there is not too much business happening. Everyone is heavily in debt.

Luckily, a rich Russian tourist arrives in the foyer of the small local hotel. He asks for a room and puts a Euro100 note on the reception counter, takes a key and goes to inspect the room located up the stairs on the third floor.

The hotel owner takes the banknote in hurry and rushes to his meat supplier to whom he owes E100.
The butcher takes the money and races to his supplier to pay his debt.
The wholesaler rushes to the farmer to pay E100 for pigs he purchased some time ago.
The farmer triumphantly gives the E100 note to a local prostitute who gave him her services on credit.
The prostitute goes quickly to the hotel, as she owed the hotel for her hourly room use to entertain clients.
At that moment, the rich Russian is coming down to reception and informs the hotel owner that the proposed room is unsatisfactory and takes his E100 back and departs.

There was no profit or income. But everyone no longer has any debt and the small town people look optimistically towards their future.

COULD THIS BE THE SOLUTION TO THE Global Financial Crisis? Or, is there a catch here?

PS: It isn’t a new solution but something which has been in play for centuries. The only difference in game at this stage is that the owners of game have changed and new owners aren’t ready to play by old rules but old owners are equally adamant. Someone will have to continue the game.

Please cast your vote

After lot of advertisements shown in media and still going on, nation-wide campaigns started by bodies like Tata Industries and Times Of India, I feel quite small to make this request but after reading about just around 50% voting in metro cities like Mumbai and capital Delhi, I feel that perhaps my words might make some difference.

I have been driving everyone in my contact to cast their vote. It is once in five years when you get a chance to correct your mistake and to find what wrong went in the government you voted for, if you give your vote. Otherwise you loose your right to find wrongs in government if you don’t vote at all.

That’s what I believe.

Feels good that if not everyone, some got driven. I am going to my hometown to give my vote on this Wednesday.

In the end, I would request you to please go through this link to find more wisdom on whom to vote

PS: Little disappointment does occur when you know that even in politics, reservation is introduced from back-door and there are seats where candidates only from reserve castes can fight elections but that shouldn’t stop you from thinking about the big picture.

There was a contest in a company to write a fictional story for 500 words max which would start with the line "On a dark and foggy night, a small figure lay huddled on the railway tracks leading to the Bangalore station". This is what a guy wrote for the contest and surprisingly, it was adjudged the best short story )

On a dark and foggy night, a small figure lay huddled on the railway tracks leading to the Bangalore station. At once I was held back to see someone in that position during midnight with no one around. With curiosity taking the front seat, I went near the body and tried to investigate it. There was blood all over the body which was lying face down. It seemed that a ruthless blow by the last train could have caused the end of this body which seemed to be that of a guy of around my age. Amidst the gory blood flow, I could see a folded white envelope which was fluttering in the midnight wind. Carefully I took the blood stained envelope and was surprised to see the phrase "appraisal letter" on it. With curiosity rising every moment, I wasted no time in opening the envelope to see if I can find some details about the dead guy. The tag around the body’s neck and the jazzy appraisal cover gave me the hint that he might be a software engineer. I opened the envelope to find a shining paper on which the appraisal details where typed in flying colors. Thunders broke into my ears and lightening struck my heart when I saw the appraisal amount of the dead guy!!!!! My God, it was not even, as much as the cost of the letter on which the appraisal details were printed…. My heart poured out for the guy and huge calls were heard inside my mind saying "no wonder, this guy died such a miserable death"… As a fellow worker in the same industry, I thought I should mourn for him for the sake of respect and stood there with a heavy heart thinking of the shock that he would have experienced when his manager had placed the appraisal letter in his hand. I am sure his heart would have stopped and eyes would have gone blank for few seconds looking at the near to nothing increment in his salary.

While I mourned for him, for a second my hands froze to see the employee’s name in the appraisal letter… hey, what a strange co-incidence, this guy’s name is same as mine, including the initials. This was interesting. With some mental strength, I turned the body upside down and found myself fainted for a second. The guy not only had my name, but also looked exactly like me. Same looks, same built, same name…. it was me who was dead there!!!!!!!! While I was lost in that shock, I felt someone patting on my shoulders. My heart stopped completely, I could not breathe and sprung in fear to see who was behind……… splash!!! Went the glass of water on my laptop screen as I came out of my wild dream to see my manager standing behind my chair patting on my shoulder saying, "wake up man? Come to meeting room number two. I have your appraisal letter ready".

The Guardian – I was recommended and turned out to be very good. Few scenes in this movie happened to map directly with Major Saab. Appreciable acting by Kevin Costner and Ashton Kutcher.
