Outdoor Vision Fest this Friday at SFUAD

This week's Outdoor Vision Fest (#OVF2012) at the Santa Fe University of Visual Arts is shaping up as a can't miss event, showcasing the work of students, visitors and folks from the Redfish Group and Lumenscapes. Please check it out, share and attend!

Students and contributors to Santa Fe University's annual Outdoor Vision Fest will present some of their cutting-edge environmental projection work at Santa Fe Complex and discuss their process and discoveries with interested New Mexico media and high-tech professionals and artists, in an evening designed to stimulate the imagination and build the community of 21st century media artists in northern New Mexico.

Contributors will include visiting artists from Istanbul Bilgi University, who have been invited to create a stunning installation combining computer-generated projections with sound.

New Mexico Film Office Announces Statewide

Film Industry Town Halls

SANTA FE—The New Mexico Film Office today announced a series of Town Hall meetings scheduled to take place across the state, beginning with Southern New Mexico in October. Director Nick Maniatis will discuss the state of the New Mexico film industry – including an update about 2011 legislation, the outlook going forward, and opportunities and training available to New Mexicans. The meetings are also intended to provide an open forum for the new Director to learn about educational programs, film related businesses, and issues of concern for each community. The Town Halls are free and open to all, including students, local filmmakers, businesses and the general public.

The first three Town Hall meetings will take place October 17, 18 and 19 in Las Cruces, Ruidoso and Roswell, respectively. The New Mexico Film Office will take questions from the audience and will collaborate with local chambers of commerce and schools in conducting these events.

"We are working to make sure that New Mexicans across the state have a chance to be a part of this exciting and growing industry," said Nick Maniatis, Director of the New Mexico Film Office. "Through these town halls, we are reaching out to residents around New Mexico to create a dialogue about how we can help each other in representing our communities."

The first series of these meetings will take place as follows:

There is no RSVP necessary to attend any of the Town Hall meetings and the NM Film Office encourages the surrounding communities to come out and participate in the discussion. The expected time frame for each is approximately two hours with Q&A. Future Town Hall meetings will be scheduled in other cities in early 2012. The New Mexico Film Office conducts regular visits to communities across New Mexico each year during conferences, seminars, and as part of its annual tour of winning films through its NM Filmmakers Showcases.

The New Mexico Film Office Announces Feature Film,

Blaze You Out, Shooting in New Mexico

SANTA FE —Nick Maniatis, the New Mexico Film Office director, announced today that the feature film, Blaze You Out, is shooting for four weeks in New Mexico. The production began principal photography in Rio Arriba County and will employ at least 80 crew members and more than 100 principal and background talent from New Mexico.

"We are very proud to announce this particular film as the writers, directors, producers and local stars are all homegrown talent," said Nick Maniatis. "From conception to creation, these are New Mexicans creating jobs for New Mexicans."

The film is co-written and directed by Espanola Valley native, Diego Joaquin Lopez, and local New Mexican resident, Mateo Frazier. Diego and Mateo began their creative partnership in 2009 on the award-winning short film Torcida. Both bring a wide range of experience to the project and have helped to define the burgeoning film and television movement in New Mexico by writing and directing locally based stories.

The production team includes: producer, Alicia Keyes Touche, executive producer, Peter Touche (Goats) of Sandia Media, co-producers Brent Morris (Monster, Smoke Signals) and O'Shea Read and associate producer, Kerith Lemon. Alicia Keyes Touche of Sandia Productions stated that, "We are excited to be a part of a new wave of filmmakers who are unearthing contemporary stories that draw from the rich culture and history of New Mexico. We feel blessed to be able to live, work and create in New Mexico." Blaze You Out is the first feature produced by Sandia Productions.

Blaze You Out features New Mexico talents Jeremy Ray Valdez (Constantine, La Mission and Walkout) and Raoul Trujillo (Cowboy's and Aliens). Other cast members include Veronica Diaz-Carranza (Mamitas, Taco Shop), Melissa Cordero (Language of a Broken Heart), award-winning actress Elizabeth Pena (Jacob's Ladder, The Incredibles, Tortilla Soup), Mark Adair Rios (Along Came Polly) and Q'orianka Kilcher (The New World, Princess Kaiulani). Local supporting cast members include Diego Joaquin Lopez, Ryan Begay, Juliet Lopez, Omar Paz Trujillo, Jose Griego, Arianna Rodriguez, Jeremiah Bitsui and Manny Chavez.

Blaze You Out tells the story of Lupe, an aspiring DJ, and her sister Alicia; two young women struggling to make a living in the Esperanza Valley, a community that has been suffocated by generations of heroin use. Ever since the death of their parents, Lupe has looked out for her rebellious sister and kept her on track. When Alicia suddenly disappears, Lupe is forced into the heart of the town's dark underworld. She quickly discovers that in order to survive and save the person that matters most, she must not only harness the power that exists within her, but also that surrounds her.

I think the jury's still out on the full effects of changes to New Mexico's film incentive programs, but the concerted efforts of many groups and key stakeholders this past session delivered a strong message that not only are we vocal, but we can also work together. The voice of the business community - both businesses working directly in media and those whose revenues are more than significantly impacted by our industry - has never been more important.

That business (and investment) discussion is the focus of the Coronado Ventures Forum's annual film and digital media event -- and now features incoming NM Film Office Director, Nick Maniatis. I hope you'll consider attending!

Leopold Legacy Film Competition, Extended Deadline to May 13^th

Amateur and professional filmmakers alike still have a chance to participate in the Leopold Legacy Film Competition. This is a great way to continue to celebrate earth day by highlighting our local environmental heroes. Winners will receive a cash prize and chance to show their film on the big screen. Outdoor Screening of Green Fire: Aldo Leopold and a Land Ethic for Our Time preceded by the Leopold Legacy Film Competition Award Ceremony on May 20^th from 7:30-10:00pm at the Gutierrez-Hubbell House

The 2011 NM Filmmakers Showcase is conducting a last call for animations to be included in our May 2011 Showcase. Although animation submissions have always been accepted and one was submitted, our entry form did not list it as a category and therefore we are conducting a final call. If you have an animation film to submit, please see attached entry form, write in ‘animation’ as your category and send your application packet to the Guild Cinema by Friday, May 6^th. This seven-minute documentary in-progress by New Visions winner Federico Reade examines the Chicano civil rights movement as it unfolded in 1969. “After many of New Mexico’s youth returned from the first National Chicano Youth Conference in Colorado, they were inspired to change inequities perceived in society, along with legions of other Chicano youth across the country. They went on to find themselves at the vanguard of an awakened consciousness both locally and nationally, that would ultimately transform a nation.” Hosted by Federico Reade and Richard Moore with special guests: Joaquin Lujan, Santiago Maestas, Father Luis Jaramillo, Marvin Garcia, Richard Sawtelle, Lucia Baca Lucero, all members of the Black Beret Organization. NOW OPEN FOR REGISTRATION!

Our NEW 2011 NMFO Production Directory is now open for registration! Your old listing will not transfer over to the new directory, so please re-register. Although registration is available throughout the year, please try to register before April 30th since we'll be going live on May 2nd – at which point the old directory and listings will be deleted.

Listings are FREE to all New Mexico resident crew and New Mexico support services
Crew members and support services can list in up to six (6) categories
Applicants can register online and update their profile 24/7 anytime throughout the year

NM Women in Film Sage Awards TODAY!

Greetings!

One of our most dynamic groups (NM Women in Film) has their biggest event of the year later today! Hope you can join them at the Center for Contemporary Art (CCA) in Santa Fe:

Santa Fe, NM - NM Women In Film ("NMWIF"), a non-profit chapter organization dedicated to

supporting women's achievement in film and television, is collaborating with NM Women in the

Arts to host their annual Sage Award presentation and the 2011 Women in Film & Television

International Showcase. Each year, members of NM Women In Film nominate a number of

strong and creative women from the New Mexico community for the annual Sage Award – an

accolade created to honor a person of virtue who is an inspiring presence in our community and a

supporter of women's issues. This year, NM Women In Film has announced filmmaker, Barbara

Martinez Jitner, as the award recipient. Barbara will accept this award during a tribute to her

work on Saturday, March 5th at 6:00pm at the Center for Contemporary Art in Santa Fe. Read

Women in Film & Television International Showcase: March 4th and 5th

This year marks the 100th Anniversary of International Women's Day, and we will be celebrating

once again with two screenings of the 2011 Women in Film & Television International

Showcase! In March of 1911, the United Nations proclaimed March 8th as a celebration of

women around the globe. WIFTI will present its 6th annual Short Film Festival to commemorate

the event on two different evenings: March 4th at 7:00pm and March 5th at 7:00pm – the second

of which will be preceded by our NMWIF Sage Award presentation. The Showcase will

highlight award-winning films created by women from around the world, which were garnered in

a competition that was open to all members of WIFTI chapters. One film was selected from each

chapter to represent that region, and this year's Showcase will include a film by NMWIF

member, Debrianna Mansini, whose short animation, "Picking Up Feets," was chosen to

represent New Mexico. The Showcase is free to all NMWIF members, $5 for NMWA members,

and $10 for the public. Your ticket stub for either night's screening will also admit you to the

Sage Award presentation on Saturday, March 5th.

2011 Sage Award Winner: BARBARA MARTINEZ JITNER

The NM Women in Film Board of Directors is pleased to announce the recipient of their 2011

Sage Award: Barbara Martinez Jitner. Barbara was nominated because of her inspiring work

behind the camera and on behalf of her many humanitarian causes around the world. She

courageously brought international attention to the genocide of women in Juarez, Mexico,

through the making of "Bordertown" – a film partially shot in New Mexico that starred Jennifer

Lopez and Antonio Banderas. She was Executive Producer and 2nd Unit Director on the project,

which was based on her real-life experiences posing as a factory worker to uncover the dark

world of poverty, abuse, and ritualized murder in the maquiladoras where so many women were

killed and never found. Her hard work both during filming and after production to expose the

on-going murders and the continuous cover up by Mexican authorities was remarkable and has

garnered much acclaim. Throughout her research and during production, Barbara and her crew

faced a great deal of adversity, including death threats and other hardships; and her subsequent

work with UNICEF and Amnesty International to help these women and their families has

provided her a remarkable voice in the international community. She and her partner, filmmaker,

Gregory Nava, have a home in Santa Fe and share time between New Mexico and Los Angeles.

Barbara is a professional screenwriter, producer and director, and the first Latina ever to be

nominated for both a Golden Globe and an Emmy as an executive producer/writer/director of the

miniseries, "American Family – Journey of Dreams," a PBS program that made history as the

first Latino family drama on broadcast television when it debuted in 2002. She is the President

of El Norte Productions and this year is writing and executive producing a mini-series for HBO.

On February 25th, the International Institute for Film Finance will be holding its meeting in Albuquerque. As founding members, CMI will be showing the proceedings in the Theatre FREE to CMI students. The fee is $35 for NON CMI students.

If you are serious about making films, then the information presented in this forum will be essential to your future. Money, finding money and spending money carefully are major parts of making a film and this information will help. The panel of experts will take your questions via chat and give you real answers.

Hal "Corky" Kessler (program segment Turbulence Within the Entertainment Space: 10+ Hot Legal Issues to Watch) has extensive entertainment law, corporate and worldwide entertainment industry experience. Corky has successfully worked with governors and United States Congressmen in several states to implement new laws and federal tax incentives for investments in qualifying film and television projects, in addition to authoring a reference book covering such federal and state tax incentives. Corky has assembled and built winning teams for more than 30 entertainment and other business ventures. He has developed, packaged and executive produced feature films, theatre projects and television projects, including "The Sum of Us," starring Russell Crowe, which won the Australian Academy Award for Best Film and most currently "Certifiably Jonathan" starring Jonathan Winters, Robin Williams, Howie Mandel, Rob Reiner, Jim Carrey, Sara Silverman, and others. Corky has been the attorney on over 15 feature films and is actively working on over 12 more film projects. He has also developed, produced and been the attorney for many theatrical plays.

Joseph Chianese (program segment Identifying Incentives: How to Take Advantage of Available Benefits) is the Senior Vice President at Entertainment Partners, a leading provider of production management services in the entertainment industry. Joseph was the Senior Director of tax at Sony Pictures Entertainment for 6 years, where he was responsible for all tax matters related to domestic and international film & television production, financing, licensing and distribution. He initiated all domestic and international strategic tax planning, and managed 18 Tax Professionals in Los Angeles, New York, London, Germany, Singapore and Japan. Joseph has a long career providing domestic and international strategic tax planning and production structuring services for numerous companies. He has been a Senior Manger at The Walt Disney Company, American Broadcasting Company (ABC), Paramount Pictures, and Ernst & Young LLP. He is considered to be the top industry expert on state and worldwide film incentives.

Peter Touche (program segment Raising Equity: How to Get Your Project Off the Ground) started his career in production finance working for the BBC and the Walt Disney Company. He was later appointed Finance Director of Grosvenor Park in the UK where he closed over $1bn of film and TV deals through various tax-driven financing structures. He went on to become Operations Director at Ingenious Media for 7 years, closing a further $2bn of film financing transactions including Kingdom of Heaven, The Golden Compass, Cold Mountain and Scoop. In 2008 he moved with his family from London to New Mexico where he set up Sandia Media LLC to facilitate financing for films shooting in the state, including advancing the NM tax rebate. He is currently executive producing Goats starring David Duchovny and Vera Farmiga. Sandia Media works closely with Sandia Productions to develop and finance commercial feature films. He holds a BA from Oxford University and qualified as a UK Chartered Accountant. Peter is also currently on the board of NMedia, a trade organization representing local businesses lobbying to retain the film incentives in the state of New Mexico.

Sam Levy (program segment Internet Marketing: Utilizing Current Technology) heads the Film and Internet division at Rio Grande Insurance, handling major motion picture, multimedia production / office insurance, as well as commercial, packages, workers compensation, auto, home, life and health insurance. Sam is President of NET MAN, Inc. a full service website development and internet integration company in Santa Fe, New Mexico. He is a past Chairman of the Board of Directors and current vice-chair of the New Mexico Internet Professionals Association (NMIPA). Sam has been a community college teacher and workshop presenter for a series of "Doing Business On The Internet" workshops. He regularly publishes Internet Business advice column in the NMIPA Internet Informer, distributed to over 10,000 New Mexico business owners and Chamber of Commerce members. He is an inaugural participant in the Santa Fe Future leadership, community investigation and annual white paper development program sponsored by SFEDI, SFCOC and SFCC. He also is Chairman of New Media Industries, Inc., a collaborative industry and community marketing, awareness, training and economic development group.

Todd Hein (program segment Entertainment Tax: Getting the Best Returns on Your Projects) is a senior manager in the federal tax unit in the Los Angeles office of Crowe Horwath, LLP, a national public accounting firm based in South Bend, Indiana, with offices located throughout the United States. He has practiced in public accounting for over 20 years, specializing in income tax compliance and planning for entertainment industry clients and related service businesses. Todd received his undergraduate degree in Economics from UCLA. and earned a Master of Science in Taxation from Golden Gate University.

About the Films

Afro 40^th (60 min.)

A locally-produced documentary in progress that reflects upon a more turbulent time for African Americans in New Mexico. Celebrating the 40th anniversary of the African-American Studies program at UNM, the NM Office of African American Affairs has conducted a series of interviews with members of the Black student movement and the faculty that supported them in the late 1960s. While the nation was incensed with the burning desire for civil rights and anti-war and peace movements, a spark ignited on the campus of UNM as black students united around the plight of Black athletes, leading to protests and boycotts. Students like Barbara Brown and Sam Johnson formed the first Black Student Union and fought for the formation of a Black Studies program that included African-American faculty and administrators. In these interviews, the students, along with Dr. Harold Bailey (current Executive Director of the NM Office of African American Affairs), Rev. Charles Becknell and others talk about the obstacles that were overcome to become a visible part of the university – and what that struggle has provided for the students of today.

Basquiat (108 min.)

A 1996 biopic-drama directed by Julian Schnabel, which is based on the life of American postmodernist/neo expressionist artist, Jean-Michel Basquiat. This film follows the life of Basquiat as he catapulted from being an unknown nineteen-year-old graffiti writer to one of the most successful, controversial and glamorous artists in the world. Described by The New York Times as the art world's closest equivalent to James Dean, this film also portrays a turbulent and talented young painter who was plagued by loneliness, self-destruction and the belief that others did not truly accept him for who he was. Actor Jeffrey Wright portrays Basquiat and David Bowie serves a supporting role as Basquiat's friend and mentor, Andy Warhol.

About the Gallery Exhibition

Zane Bennett Contemporary Art is pleased to announce new paintings by artist, Deborah Barlow. The exhibition opens on February 25^th and continues through March 18^th. In the words of one critic, her works are "ambient and subtle...a refreshing naturalistic, pre- and non-verbal experience...a mind-cleansing relief in today's media- and message-overloaded society." Other reviewers have described her use of visual language as possessing a "transformative, primitive, and elemental power," an artist capable of "converting her powers of observation to the experience of vision as a whole body sensation." Raised in the western United States where she studied studio art at the University of Utah and University of California at Santa Cruz, the artist has since spent most of her life in New York City and Boston. She had her first solo show in Manhattan at the age of 25 and since then, has exhibited in commercial galleries in California, Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York and Rhode Island as well as in Canada, Belgium, Italy, the U.K. and Ireland. She has also been featured in solo shows at several universities including Portland State University, University of Rochester and University of Portland. Her most recent show, in the summer of 2010, was at the Brooklyn Workshop Gallery. Deborah lives in Brookline, Massachusetts and works out of her studio in South Boston.

New Mexico Film Office Announces Winners for
2010 New Visions/New Mexico Contract Awards

New Mexico filmmakers receive contract awards up to $20,000

SANTA FE – NM Film Office Director Lisa Strout and NM Filmmakers Program Director Trish Lopez today announced the winners for the 2010 New Visions/New Mexico contract award. Now in its fifth year, the program will award a total of $100,000 (up to $20,000 per project) to local filmmakers who applied with proposals of original narrative, documentary, animation and experimental films.

"This year, like each year since the program started, our local filmmakers continue to raise the bar in regard to the quality of their proposals," said Lisa Strout. "We are grateful once again to have the opportunity to support our homegrown filmmakers who are helping to build a strong and sustainable future for the New Mexico's film industry."

"The proposals receiving awards this year are great examples of the incredible talent we have in New Mexico," said Trish Lopez. "We are thankful to all who applied and our panelists who helped in this process."

The New Visions contract awards are provided by the New Mexico Filmmakers Program of the state film office. The program is open to all filmmakers in the state.

Following is a list of the seven 2010 New Visions/New Mexico winners – those with asterisks (*) are also winners of the 2010 Panavision camera package:

Panavision, a major supplier of cameras and lenses for the film industry world-wide, is once again partnering with the NM Film Office to provide the use of two motion picture camera packages (HD, 16 mm or 35mm) with no rental charge to two of our 2010 filmmakers above.

In exchange for funding, winners are required to provide contract service to the state as part of their contract, such as: training programs, lectures, free screenings and mentoring, all free of charge to New Mexicans. Winners will begin their contract work in early 2010 and receive funding once their service to the state is complete.

A selection panel reviewed each proposal based on a number of criteria, including the artistic quality of the project, the applicant's demonstrated ability and creativity, managerial and fiscal competence, and the quality of proposed service offered to the state. Judges of the 2010 awards were Stephen Ausherman (previous New Visions winner and local experimental filmmaker); Nanobah Becker, (New Mexico native filmmaker and previous Governor's Cup program winner); Gene Grant (local writer, short filmmaker and television host); TJ Nabors (senior surfacer at Dreamworks Animation in Los Angeles, previous Rudd Endowed Chair in Animation at College of Santa Fe's Moving Image Arts Department); and Diane Schneier Perrin (film producer and previous Director of College of Santa Fe's NM Filmmakers Intensive graduate program).

4^th Annual Digital Media Summit sponsored by HTC.

The HTC presents its 4^th annual Digital Media Summit in conjunction with the NMSU Creative Media Institute (CMI) showcase of projects and media facilities on Friday, December 3, 2010 at CMI.

This year, we are very excited about holding the Summit at the Creative Media Institute on the NMSU campus. This allows us to conduct our discussions in the environment where digital media products are created and produced. Discussions will revolve around taking stock of current resources, i dentifying opportunities, and setting goals for digital media work in southern New Mexico. Six workshop sessions will focus on animation, gaming, entertainment, production management, marketing & visibility and recording, mixing & editing. Demonstrations will include CMI's motion capture facility, the only THX multi-soundtrack mixing stage in New Mexico, and motion control techniques. There will also be a showcase of faculty and student projects. The event will be followed by a reception at the Sonoma Ranch Sunset Grill for Summit participants, HTC members and friends, hosted by the HTC.

Eddie Shanken

Edward A. Shanken writes and teaches about the entwinement of art, science, and technology with a focus on interdisciplinary practices involving new media. He is Universitair Docent in New Media, University of Amsterdam, and a member of the Media Art History faculty at the Donau University in Krems, Austria. He was formerly Executive Director of the Information Science + Information Studies program at Duke University and Professor of Art History and Media Theory at Savannah College of Art and Design. Recent and forthcoming publications include essays on art and technology in the 1960s, information aesthetics, interactivity and agency, and the cultural implications of cybernetics, robotics, and biotechnology. He edited Telematic Embrace: Visionary Theories of Art, Technology and Consciousness (University of California Press, 2003). His second book, Art and Electronic Media was published by Phaidon Press in 2009.

Yolande Harris

Yolande Harris is a composer and artist based in Amsterdam, engaged with sound and image in environment and architectural space. Her current research/practice considers the musical potential of sound worlds outside the human hearing range, through underwater bioacoustics and the sonification of data. In 2009 Yolande was awarded a national artist stipend from the Netherlands Funds for Visual Arts. Her work has been presented internationally, including MACBA (Barcelona), Schirn Kunsthalle Frankfurt, NIMk (Amsterdam), V2 (Rotterdam), ISEA Singapore, UCLA, Villa Croce Genova. Significant artist residencies include the Netherlands Media Art Institute, Atlantic Center for the Arts (Florida), STEIM (Amsterdam), Jan van Eyck Academy (Maastricht), Metronom (Barcelona). She held an Artistic Fellowship at the Academy of Media Arts Cologne, and was Lecturer in Interaction Design at the Technical University of Eindhoven. Her publications include "Inside-Out Instrument" (Contemporary Music Review 2006) and "The Building as Instrument" (Cambridge Scholars Press 2007).
