The Little Mermaid is a 1989 American animated feature produced by Walt Disney Feature Animation and based on the Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale of the same name. Distributed by Walt Disney Pictures, the film was originally released to theaters on November 17, 1989 and is the twenty-eighth film in the Walt Disney Animated Classics series.

November 17, 2009 marks the 20th Anniversary of The Little Mermaid. AniMotion NM celebrates this anniversary with two of the Disney animators who worked on this feature: Dan Haskett, and Phil Young.

Kammer 2.1 is an experimental video series that explores intangible elements--preconceived notions, personal experience, nostalgia--that influence perceptions of central New Mexico. This vast collection of ultrashort vids stems from extensive field recordings conducted by Stephen Ausherman throughout the region's parks and public lands. Ausherman arranged his material to establish connections between otherwise incongruent reference points, and let emotional attachments play into his interpretations of the land and its cultures. He also invited a diverse array of local collaboration throughout the creative process.

K2.1 scored a New Visions Award in experimental film from the New Mexico Film Office in 2008. The project debuted in May 2009 as an interactive display at the Albuquerque Open Space Visitor Center, and ran through August 2009 as part of the LAND/ART exhibitions.

Noted works from the K2.1 series include _Bovine Saga_, winner at the Leopold Legacy Film Series in Albuquerque; and _La 2e Peste_, finalist, WPA Experimental Media Series, Smithsonian Institution, in Washington, DC.

Stephen Ausherman is the author of _60 Hikes within 60 Miles: Albuquerque_ (Menasha Ridge Press, 2008). He was an Artist-in-Residence for Blue Sky Project in Woodstock, Illinois, in 2008; and for Cornucopia Art Center in Lanesboro, Minnesota, in 2007. He also served as the 2005 Writer-in-Residence for Bernheim Forest in Kentucky, Devils Tower National Monument in Wyoming, and Buffalo National River in Arkansas.

High-Tech Meets Old World in Upcoming Santa Fe Found Exhibit

Santa Fe (Nov. 13, 2009) - When Santa Fe Found: Fragments of Time opens at the New Mexico History Museum on Nov. 20, futuristic technologies will give visitors new, close-up views of the past.

Stephen Post, co-curator of the exhibit, worked with student interns from New Mexico Highlands University and former Los Alamos National Laboratory scientists brought on board by the Department of Cultural Affairs to devise new ways to present old objects, including the 400-year-old Palace of the Governors.

Santa Fe Found: Fragments of Time combines historical documents with archaeological artifacts from several sites of early Spanish colonists to explore the founding of La Villa Real de Santa Fé, now celebrating its 400^th birthday. Set appropriately in the Palace of the Governors, where colonists established their first government, the exhibit was curated by Post and Josef Diaz of the New Mexico History Museum.

Some of the artifacts are too fragile for long-term exhibition; others, like the Palace, no longer exist in their original form. That's where technology comes in.

Using a portable laser scanner, Ralph Chapman and David Modl of New Mexico Virtualization LLC are producing a 3D model of the oldest radiocarbon-dated dart point from Santa Fe - a small artifact from New Mexico's indigenous people that is more than 7,000 years old. The virtual model - an enlarged, rotating, three-dimensional image - will be displayed with the actual dart point.

New Mexico Virtualization was formed last year by Chapman, former head of the Idaho Virtualization Lab, and two former Los Alamos Visualization Scientists, Modl and Steve Smith. The group had received a 2009 Venture Acceleration Fund grant from Los Alamos National Laboratory to develop their business; the grant supports the museum collaboration.

"It has been four years since DCA received funding to position New Mexico as an international center for museum technology, and it's gratifying to see the convergence of Highlands students, museums, and private companies," said Mimi Roberts, DCA director for media projects. "Visitors who come to see Santa Fe Found are in for a special treat."

The little basalt dart point that New Mexico Virtualization worked with will be on public view for the first time since it was discovered in 1995 by Post, deputy director of the New Mexico Office of Archaeological Studies. During the excavation of a much later hunter-gatherer campsite near N.M. 599, Post became intrigued by a dark streak in the bank of an arroyo and decided to investigate. Older points have been found outside the city, including Paleoindian sites in Santa Fe County that may date to 8,500 or 9,000 years old. This one, however, comes from the oldest radiocarbon-dated site found so far within city limits - a discovery that involved hand-removal of 14 metric tons of dirt.

Another artifact - a gold earring found during the excavation of the Sánchez Site near El Rancho de las Golondrinas - will be on virtual display only. (The actual earring is featured above in a photograph by Blair Clark, New Mexico Department of Cultural Affairs.)

"It's precious and can't be put on loan for 18 months," Post said. "This is a way museums can bring things to people."

The exhibit will also feature an interactive 3D model of the 17^th-century Palace of the Governors created by students Jessica Power and Daniel Atencio from the Media Arts Program at Highlands. The project is part of a DCA partnership that prepares students for careers as multimedia professionals in museums.

Post said the project was extremely challenging and time-consuming because of sparse information about the Palace during the 17^th century. The model is a visual representation based on data gathered during several archaeological excavations in the building and historical documents.

"No one knows what the original Palace looked like in the 17^th century," he said. "But we're taking people as far back in the past as we can with this virtual model."

The New Mexico History Museum is the newest addition to a campus that includes the Palace of the Governors, the oldest continuously occupied public building in the United States; Fray Angélico Chávez History Library; Palace of the Governors Photo Archives; the Press at the Palace of the Governors; and the Native American Artisans Program. media arts students win scholarships

SANTA FE—Two participants in a ground-breaking partnership between the Media Arts Program at New Mexico Highlands University and the state Department of Cultural Affairs have been selected winners of Women in Technology scholarships from the New Mexico Technology Council.

NMHU graduate students Virginia Marrujo and Jennifer Alexander are participating in an innovative partnership between Highlands and DCA that combines academics and internships to prepare students for careers as multimedia professionals in New Mexico's museums, other cultural organizations and exhibit design businesses.

Marrujo has worked on multimedia components for Fashioning New Mexico, one of the inaugural exhibits at the New Mexico History Museum which opened last Memorial Day weekend in Santa Fe, and on Almas de la Plaza/Souls of the Plaza, a video installation in the windows of the Plaza Hotel in Las Vegas. Her goal is to create a multimedia production company in New Mexico.

Alexander is currently an education intern at the Museum of International Folk Art in Santa Fe and says she would like to make interactive DVD's that under-funded schools can use to teach art to students.

"I want to inspire the children of New Mexico to listen to and be inspired by their own inner, creative voices," Alexander said.

Assistant Professor Megan Jacobs is the NMHU Media Arts Program scholarship coordinator who submitted the nominations on behalf of the faculty. "Commitment to culture and community are core values of our program. The partnership with the Department of Cultural Affairs gives our students opportunities to apply their technological skills and creative talents in real world professional settings."

Fourteen scholarship winners were selected from 90 nominees based on evaluation of written essays and goals.

Academy Award nominated writer/director Gregory Nava whose films include SELENA, MI FAMILIA and EL NORTE will screen two of his films; EL NORTE, the Oscar nominated classic about Immigration, and BORDERTOWN, the Jennifer Lopez thriller about hundreds of women brutally raped and murdered in Juarez, Mexico, on November 4th and 5th in Las Cruces, NM.   Following the screening of EL NORTE will be a provocative discussion entitled, "Latinos Changing the U.S. & Hollywood"; and following the screening of BORDERTOWN, the real life hero of the film, Barbara Martinez Jitner, will hold a discussion entitled, "Mass Murder at our Border".

New Mexico Film Office Announces Filmmakers' Showcases in Roswell, Carlsbad and Las Cruces

SANTA FE—Lisa Strout, Director of the New Mexico Film Office and Trish Lopez, New Mexico Filmmakers Program Director, today announced a series of three Filmmakers' Showcase presentations in Roswell, Carlsbad and Las Cruces. The showcases will be held November 3, 6, and 7 and will feature the winning films from this year's four-day, 2009 New Mexico Filmmakers Showcase in Albuquerque. Over 70 local filmmakers from across the state submitted their work to this annual event, where the public had the opportunity to see all of the films on the big screen at no cost.

"This is a great opportunity for the communities in Southern New Mexico to see the work of the talented filmmakers in our state. It is one of the ways we can do our part to bring their work to a wider audience," said Lisa Strout. "I encourage everyone to come out to support our film community and see how our state is benefiting from our efforts to create film industry jobs and opportunities for New Mexicans."

The Synapse to Screen 1.0 Conference is a two-day event to be held on December 3rd and 4th, 2009, in association with the 10th Annual Santa Fe Film Festival (SFFF). Covering all things Pre-production in the making of movies, with panels, demonstrations, and lectures, including techniques and modern tools used in brainstorming & mind-mapping, outlining, plot & character development, screenwriting, story-boarding, budgeting, production reports, and scheduling a movie. This will be a live event with audience interaction, and also streamed on the Internet to a select audience. The first day, Dec. 3rd, will deal with the writer oriented aspects of pre-production, and the second day, Dec. 4th, will address the aspects more related to taking the script from page to screen. The focus of S2S1.0 is the tools and their use, not the concepts of story, screenwriting, etc., per se. I would like to emphasize that the first day's sessions will be beneficial to all writers, not just screenwriters.

We are seeking panelist, demonstrations, advertisers, sponsors, software packages for raffles, and other ideas that might suit you. In addition, we are putting together a prize package for the winner of the SFFF "New Face in Cinema" award to be given at the SFFF Awards Ceremony and would like your input on that. I believe this is an opportunity to present your talents, product(s) and insight to a focused audience and show how their future projects can be better, more efficient, more entertaining and less expensive. Beyond the actual S2S1.0 event, attending the SFFF and mingling with the hundreds of moviemakers is an opportunity to make connections and introduce yourself to new people. Silver City Art Auction July 31 to benefit "Festival of the Soul"

An art auction to benefit the "Festival of the Soul" musicfest will be
held 5-9:30 p.m. July 31 at the Silco Theater in Silver City.

Festival of the Soul will be held Nov. 14-15 at Penny Park, 1305 N. Grant
in Silver City. The two-day musical event will feature inspirational, uplifting
and exciting ³World² music.

"This is the first musicfest of its kind I'm aware of to be held in Silver City
and all of southern New Mexico," said organizer Ed Conley. ³There are blues, bluegrass, folk and jazz music festivals all over the country, but I felt there
was a whole segment of the population not getting the kind of music they
wanted. We hope everyone experiencing this music will be transformed
to a new level of joy, peace and harmony with our planet.²

Volunteers are needed to help with the musical festival which will be held
Nov. 14-15 at Penny Park, 1305 N. Grant in Silver City, said organizers.

"Festival of the Soul" proceeds will help Penny Park in Silver City

Organizers of the Nov. 14-15 "Festival of the Soul" in Silver City plan to donate 50 percent of their proceeds to benefit Penny Park, which celebrated its 10th anniversary this year.

"Festival of the Soul" is a two-day family-oriented musicfest which features inspirational, uplifting and exciting "World" music performed by well-known professional bands from across the country as well as the local area. This is the first of what is hoped to be a yearly event and it is the first of its kind to be held in Silver City and all of southern New Mexico, organizers say. It will be held at Penny Park, 1305 N. Grant, in Silver City.

The park in downtown Silver City is a community project built by hundreds of volunteers. The park's first phase, the Penny Playground, was completed in the spring of 1999. The playground is filled with a variety of imaginative climbing structures, castle playhouses, slides, swings, balance beams, bridges, and picnic grounds. Donations of volunteer labor, and materials cut construction costs in half.

In the fall of 1999, volunteers constructed above-ground ramps and other structures for a temporary skate park, which has been used for many years while funds were being raised for the construction of a 20,000 square foot in-ground extreme sports park. In April 2000 volunteers gathered again to build a 310-seat amphitheater and dance floor. Silver City is proud of its community park which helped promote similar, though less elaborate projects in Carlsbad, Las Cruces, and Ruidoso.

In April 2009 the park was damaged when an arson-caused fire burned a large portion of the park. The community was committed to rebuilding the park. Festival of the Soul's donation will help to rebuild.

Loni Peristere co-founded Zoic Studios in 2002 with partners Chris Jones and Steve Schofield. He is an acting creative director for commercial, episodic, and feature animation projects. Loni won the Emmy and the VES award in 2003 for Special Visual Effects in a Television Series for Twentieth Century Fox's "Firefly". He was a multiple nominee, with a second nod for Twentieth Century Fox's "Buffy the Vampire Slayer". During his tenure in visual effects he has been nominated and directed numerous award-winning projects. Governor’s Council on Film and Media Industries Announces Town Hall Meeting in Las Cruces

SANTA FE – The Governor’s Council on Film and Media Industries will host a town hall meeting to gather input on the future of the state’s burgeoning film and media industries. The event is free and open to the public and will be held from 1:00 to 4:30 PM Thursday, October 8^th at the Alma d' arte Charter High School in Las Cruces.

“This is an opportunity for the Council to get direct input from the public so that we can help update Governor Richardson’s plan of action.” said Chairman Michael Kaye.

The event is being held in association with the High Tech Consortium of Southern New Mexico. The schedule includes a listening session, three break-out strategy sessions and a final wrap-up session.

Participants registering online will have an opportunity to help identify breakout sessions from a list including Opportunities in Film; Opportunities in Games, Modeling and Simulation; Building Connections between South and North; Building effective Groups and Organizations; and Developing Education Strategies – or they may suggest their own.

A creative director whose firm has worked in advertising, films and gaming will be the keynote speaker at the next New Mexico Advertising Federation meeting.
Loni Peristere is co-founder of digital production company Zoic Studios in Los Angeles. His talk, "Bending the Rules: Using Technology to Maximize and Expand the Possibilities of Media Advertising," will take place at 11:30 a.m. at the Hotel Albuquerque on Sept. 15.
He won an Emmy Award for special visual effects for work on Joss Whedon's "Firefly" series. He is a multiple nominee and Emmy winner for work on "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" and has collaborated with Whedon on "Serenity" and the Web series, "Doctor Horrible's Sing Along Blog."
Melissa Walters Leymon said the Ad Fed chapter is working to schedule speakers with a national reputation like Peristere because they can show New Mexico members what is being done by the best in the industry.
"Loni is one of the best when it comes to the digital world," she said.

Decoding Design :: Maggie Macnab

Effective design begins with understanding connections. Join Maggie Macnab, identity designer, educator and author of Decoding Design: Understanding and Using Symbols in Visual Communication as she examines the significance of patterns and shapes we encounter in everyday life, and articulates their relationships to natural processes we all intuitively know. Exploring a spectrum of interdisciplinary practices that have common ground in design, this presentation offers the designer, creative professional, student, artist, or lay person a powerful and eclectic approach to creative process and understanding of how design impacts communication. Maggie speaks for national conferences, guest lectures for colleges in the US and abroad, and provides internal training for communications departments on the value of designed communications. Her presentation is mind-stretching, informative, and not like any you've seen before. Attendees will identify both their preferred and disliked traits in symbolic terms and learn what it says about them in universal principles, and begin work on a fusion of the two in balance as a workshop take-away.

Visual Myth :: Joel Nakamura

Ever since the village went global, just about everything can be part of a cultural, visual, and ephemeral stew. The more digital and technological a society becomes, the more it longs for primitive imagery. The more automated, impersonal, convenient or abbreviated our lives get, the more we yearn for storytelling. We will examine visual story telling–the juxtaposition of ancient and modern through symbols and media. How can we use myth, fairy tales, pop culture as sources for communication and expanded creativity?

The Found Symbol :: John Langdon

The yin/yang symbol is arguably one of the most effective logos ever designed. Central to the ancient Chinese philosophy Taoism, the yin/yang symbol was the ultimate inspiration for my entire approach to art and design. This is especially the case for my ambigrams, which are linguistically representative of many of the universal concepts that yin and yang implies. My ambigrams employ bilateral, or mirror-image, symmetry as well as yin/yang’s rotational symmetry to symbolize the physical makeup of the universe and the processes that keep it running. Plus ambigrams are fun.
