#041 - Spencer - DJ set at Numbers 8th Birthday (Sub Club, Glasgow)

Here is the recording of my set at our 8th Birthday last Friday at the Sub Club, it's pretty raw - sounds like it was recorded inside a vacuum cleaner, but the full energy from the club is represented.

Floating Points absolutely smashed it again and we will upload his set for you soon, but for now you get a real taste of the Numbers dancefloor - people doing techno karaoke, snapshots of Glasgow patter through the mic (check 29.30 for why i love Glasgow), plus the white noise of the smoke machine and folk banging the plastic side of the DJ booth.

Also the last 2 tracks are cut well short because the police were outside, it was that much of a riot. - Spencer

To accompany the release of Bare Blips we are podcasting the mix he did for MaryAnne Hobbs Radio 1 show back in May. This features tracks from Bare Blips and a few snippets of what’s to come from the man like Redinho.

On Friday, Mary Anne announced the sad news that she is leaving BBC Radio 1. We’d like to say a public thanks from Numbers for all the airplay + support over the years, and all the best for the future.

Here is the first part in a series of recordings from our room at the Something Very, Very Epic Party that happened at Razzmatazz in Barcelona during the Sonar weekend.

This first mix is by L-Vis 1990. Alongside Bok Bok he runs London's Night Slugs club and label, has recorded solo for Mad Decent and Dress 2 Sweat, plus we just released his remix of Mr Mageeka's 'Different Lekstrix'.

You can catch L-Vis 1990 at the London leg of our Seventh Birthday Parties on Friday 9th July. His partner in crime Bok Bok will be playing alongside Lil Silva, Feadz and Jackmaster in Glasgow this Friday – both lineups below.

We've re-upped this vintage Jackmaster mix from a few years ago to get you all in the mood for this weeks Sonar Festival in Barcelona. #025 - Floating Points @ Numbers. Friday 5th March 2010

For our last Numbers party at the Sub Club we booked three guests and made the unusual exception of relinquishing all musical responsibity on the night, handing over the reigns entirely to Floating Points, Kode9, and Martyn for four hours.

Spencer came prepared and set up a HD recorder to capture the full spectrum of magic that night. But he was straight off the plane from the US, jetlagged and he fucked it up, recording through the mic input instead of the line. Nightmare right? Well no not really, because what was lost in audio quality was made up for in vibes times a milli.

Floating Points was given the task of warming the club up for us with a two hour set, all vinyl, and what he produced was honestly one of the best DJ sets we've heard in the 7 year history of the club. People were just going f*cking nuts. Below you can download the second half of his set of classic House records, Detroit Techno, Disco, Theo, Drexciya and one of the only ever recorded rewinds of a Model 500 record in history (plus Glaswegian sing along).

On Friday 3rd July Numbers celebrates its 6th Birthday party at Glasgow's Sub Club. For this years celebrations we decided to mix up the old and new; so we've invited over one of our greatest influences and two of our most recent discoveries for a party of epic proportions.

MMM First up from Berlin is the massively influential MMM aka Erik & Fiedel. Erik is mostly known these days for his Errorsmith project and for being one half of Smith 'N' Hack, while Fiedel is a resident at the world famous Berghain in Berlin. These guys were responsible for the Donna Summer sampling techno classic 'Donna'; a tune that just refuses to die. We first heard Donna in the late 90's and it's a tune that has stuck with us ever since. Over the years Errorsmith has a become regular guest at the club and for one of our Brunswick Hotel parties he decided to reactivate MMM for their first ever live show. This then morphed in to a legendary ten years of MMM party at Berghain... it's about time we unleashed this beast at the Sub Club.

Gemmy & Guido Representing the new school are rising Dubstep stars Gemmy & Guido. With Glasgow and Bristol being at the forefront of Britain's electronic music scene right now we just had to invite our Bristolian cousins up for their Glasgow debut. Alongside former Numbers guest Joker they form part of the hailed Purple Trinity, famed for their take on Dubstep that sidesteps the stereotypical wobblers in favour of Prince, Dr Dre, G-Funk and modern day R&B influences like the Neptunes and Danja, with Guido recently being touted as the British answer to Timbaland by The Wire writer Joe Muggs. Numbers. Now in to its 6th year, Numbers is a collective of record labels, designers, writers, DJs and producers. The club was rated among the top 2 clubs in the UK and "one of the coolest clubs in the world" by Mixmag and the focus of their recent 4 page spread on Glasgow. This last year has seen the Numbers crew up the ante with our DJ's releasing records and performing all over Europe whilst our in house labels Stuffrecords and Wireblock have dominated the UK's electronic music scene. Expect some big announcements ahead as we prepare to do something very special with these labels.

Numbers @ BLOC weekend.

Glasgow's Numbers crew hosted the Jak-Bloc room at the BLOC Weekend festival a couple weeks ago.

Hudson Mohawke, Rustie, Jackmaster and myself had a great time in there, and apart from dealing with a few technical difficulties I've collected a few great campfire stories to tell friends! In the middle of my set, the bar personnel on the other side of the room accidentally started their CD player, so while I was in the mix I suddenly heard Simply Red's "Fairground" blaring through the speakers!

A 20 minute snippet of this set was broadcast on BBC Radio 1's Leftfield show hosted by Rob Da Bank. However, something went wrong in converting the sound files though, so what was played on the show was at the wrong speed!!! (the whole set was at least 10-15 bpm too slow) I decided to put the correct version online for all of you to listen to (and left the Simply Red bit in there :) all the way at the end).

UK Funky is a genre out of England that emerged a couple of years ago as the Grime scene went into decline and started going out of fashion with some people. It's been described pretty accurately by Bok Bok as "Grime in disguise" and to be fair it's a lot of the old Grime producers pushing the buttons on this stuff. Essentially it's a form of House music with strong African and UK elements (kinda like Mujava's Township Funk). Some of it echoes US House legends like Masters At Work or the even the Africanism stuff by DJ Gregory but the tracks on this podcast are a bit more "manly" (with the exception of Do You Mind).

40 Minutes Of Funkyish features a lot of the tracks at the moment by Roska, Lil' Silva, Donaeo etc. before veering off into some Dubstep tracks that kinda remind me of the Funky vibes.
