Time to report back on my recent purchase. This thing looks pretty tame, right? Only it's inexpensive and the user reviews rave about its sharpening ability. I used it and I agree. It makes a new edge quickly and easily. You can even see the tiny spirals of steel that it removes with its ultra sharp tungsten carbide blades!
Amazon has this AccuSharp 001 Knife Sharpener on sale for $10.- Tungsten carbide blades will not rust and they can be cleaned easily with soap and water or in your dishwasher

DEAL:
SteelSeries Solo Mouse Pad at
Amazon.com
$30
|

Still love it and just recommended it to a friend online last night. I've read their are two types of gamers when it come to using the mouse. As a "High Sensitivity" gamer I don't move my arm much when I play. That mostly means that I prefer a slick plastic pad.
After far too much research last summer I ordered a SteelSeries S&S Solo Mouse Pad (Amazon, $30 shipped). By many accounts it is the top selling pad in the gaming industry. I can see why. My mouse moves like teflon on teflon, all while still tracking with great precision. If you ever wondered what a difference a mouse pad can make, this one really delivers results. I am now past the one year mark and it looks and feels brand new.

DEAL:
PaperPro Stapler at
OfficeDepot.com
$17
|

Yes, a stapler. During a search for gadgets a few years back I came across some glowing praise for this PaperPro Stapler. The Amazon reviews backed it up, so I bought one. Know what? It's great. My old stapler would always mangle every other staple attempt, and it slowly ate at me to replace it. This PaperPro requires minimal pressure, then right when it closes it explodes with power to drive and fold the staple. If you need a new stapler, this is the one to get.
Office Depot carries it for $17 in standard gray, red, and green. Do I even need to mention which color I went with?

FDA Warns Against Using Zicam
|
This one is a little off the beaten path but it's worth spreading the word to me. Many years ago I read about the 1999 study in which a group of people used a trial of Zicam, a popular nasal spray cold remedy, and sued the company for permanent loss of their sense of smell. I've been telling people since that I would never use the stuff.
It's nice to see that ten years later, the FDA is finally looking into it. - "In 2006, Matrixx paid $12 million to settle 340 lawsuits from Zicam users who claimed that the product destroyed their sense of smell, a condition known as anosmia. Hundreds more such suits have since been filed."
- "Matrixx has received more than 800 reports of Zicam users losing their sense of smell but did not provide those reports to the F.D.A., said Deborah M. Autor, director of compliance in the agency’s drug center."
The FDA asked that Zicam be voluntarily recalled and the company refused. I smell a fight brewing...something that hundreds of Zicam users can no longer do. For now, if you have some Zicam in your medicine cabinet it looks like the company will give you a refund if you call 1-877-942-2626. I hope some jail time is dished out on this one.

Free $25 Outback Steakhouse Gift Card Contest, Year 3 from
NNDD
|

Your luck just improved. The $25 Outback gift card giveaway is back and I'm pulling the winner in a few short days. If only the state lottery had these kind of odds.
I was given a fresh $25 gift card in hopes that I would mention it. I could have just pocketed it for myself and enjoyed a delicious meal, but I'd rather show some love to my faithful NNDD readers.
Outback Steakhouse wants you to bring dad in on 6/21 for a Father's Day meal. They have 15 meals for $9.95. Then they sweeten the pot by giving you a free $10 discount certificate (promo details).
Back to the giveaway. I'll be selecting one random comment in the Talk Back section of this post and sending them my $25 Outback gift card. Given that people are generally lazy and don't read down this far, I bet your odds will be around 1 in 40. Let's see how many people take ten seconds to qualify.
Contest Rules: One entry per person. I can only contact winners for address info if they register with a valid email address, so don't use a fake one! Your email address will not be shared or spammed, since I hate that stuff too. Contest ends 6/21/09. Open to US and Canadian addresses only. Void where prohibited, in case that actually applies. In the event of some grand screwup, prizes are not guaranteed. Mmmm, free steak. Again.

Something for Dad? This one caught my eye last year when I read about it in Wired. If you're looking for a gift for a gadget-loving, occasional wine drinker, consider this Vinturi Wine Aerator a look. Amazon has it for $32 shipped with excellent user reviews.
It uses the Bernoulli principle to rapidly aerate wine, which many seem to agree makes even cheap wine taste better and smoother. I want to try it just for the science. 221 users give it an average 5/5 star rating.- Includes no-drip stand and a travel pouch

If my cat is any indication, it is certainly shedding season. $5 Basic Plan and Two Week Free Trial at
Netflix
$5
|

Netflix's basic plan is only $5/month. You also get a free two week trial before they even touch your credit card. It's a great way to give them a shot.
The basic $5/month plan gets you two movies a month, one out at a time, and they pick up the shipping costs as always. That's cheaper than a rental store, saves me the travel time, and you're not paying for gas to drive there. You can cancel any time without penalties, in case you just want to try it for a month or two. I've been on the $5 plan for over a year now just to catch what I miss in theaters.
It's only $10/month for unlimited one-disc-out rentals if you want more movies, with other tiers past that. You also get free, unlimited online movie streaming with every $10 and above tier!
