You have to watch this video until she starts singing to understand. Rethink what you think about things - accept you're wrong and see the world as an amazing place that you've been too cynical to appreciate. This should erase some of the callousness built up from reality TV.

I don't know what to say, other than it's funny. I saw this in a friend's Facebook profile, looked it up, and thought she was crazy. I went back the next night, and watched the whole thing. It will be with me until the day I die, and it is a small select group who will ever know what I'm talking about, apparantly, because it looks like it stopped after the first episodes. They all end in a satisfying storyline, however, and it's musical . . . you can't beat that . . .

Go to http://www.yourfonts.com/ and follow the easy instructions to create a font based on your own hand writing. The only requirement is that you have a scanner. It took me five minutes to create one that looked EXACTLY like my own handwriting, except that it was all online and not really messy. I only did the first page, but you have the opportunity to create an entire font of your own. If nothing else, it makes neat letters home.

I highly recommend this book to anyone. I originally read it in college for an ethics class because the instructor said he couldn't teach ethics unless we all lived by principles first. I have listened to the audio book and re-read the paperback many times since, so much that one of my employees told me the book looked more worn that his Grandmother's Bible . . .

It does require you set up an account on Audible first (if you don't already have a login), but you shouldn't have to pay any charges to enjoy this book.

$1 Eye Glasses

You may have heard of the "1 laptop per child" idea where someone is making laptops so cheap that even very poor countries can have one per child (http://laptop.org/en/). That's a very noble and worthy cause, certainly, but I'm more impressed with what I saw today, to say the least. A man has invented glasses that you can adjust the prescription on without needing an eye doctor, making glasses significantly more available for underdeveloped countries where having poor eye sight could mean you can't support yourself or your Family, not to mention degrading your quality of life.

"Silver has devised a pair of glasses which rely on the principle that the fatter a lens the more powerful it becomes. Inside the device's tough plastic lenses are two clear circular sacs filled with fluid, each of which is connected to a small syringe attached to either arm of the spectacles.

The wearer adjusts a dial on the syringe to add or reduce amount of fluid in the membrane, thus changing the power of the lens. When the wearer is happy with the strength of each lens the membrane is sealed by twisting a small screw, and the syringes removed. The principle is so simple, the team has discovered, that with very little guidance people are perfectly capable of creating glasses to their own prescription."

That's an awesome contribution to make to the world. How great is that?

The glasses aren't quite $1 each yet, but they are working on the model to reduce costs. Just having the idea to make something like this is huge. I can't wait to see this be successful.

Balloon Culture

There's an entire balloon culture out there that I had no idea about. Frankly I'm scared. These two are the best, but you can see more, as well as a video of a man trying to get in a super strong balloon that deflates when he is half way in, nearly suffocating him here: http://www.urlesque.com/2008/12/05/balloons-of-the-web-we-salute-you/ He lives, but you really have to wonder if he learned to carry a knife in case of another balloon related near death experience. At least have a friend over to help . . . oh, right . . . either there aren't many friends to speak of, or you don't want to admit you're trying to crawl inside a giant balloon in your apartment.

Either way, Balloon Jesus and Balloon Tank are impressive.

Christmas Lego sets

Many of us remember getting Lego Santa sets not too long ago, but I haven't seen any now that I want to give them to my kids. Luckily, there is a cool alternative on the Lego web site.

If you go to their holiday page (http://shop.lego.com/HolidayShop/), and scroll to the bottom, you'll see the same picture as in this post with two links. One (http://cache.lego.com/2057/images/shop/shop06/LandingPages/HolidayGiftShop/PABBuildingInstr.pdf) will get you a nine page pdf file with instructions to build several really cool sets, including the snowman in the picture and the Santa I was looking for.

"But I don't have the bricks to build it!" No problem, they've got you covered at http://shop.lego.com/pab/?warning=false . You can buy the sets, brick-by-brick, based on the part numbers from the instructions.

I can't believe I haven't seen this before! Go to http://www.hulu.com/ to see full episodes of tons of shows (like The Office, for example). It uses "minimal advertising" which meant 3 ads during the show I watched. The ads show up on the progress bar as dots just like the messages in you-tube videos, if you're familiar. You can even watch in HD. There is a ton to choose from if you're looking for something to watch. Now you just need an Xbox or Xbox 360 with Media Center to stream the show to your TV, and I just need an iPhone application that works with the site.

Free eBooks and Audio Books

If you're a gadget fan and enjoy being able to read a book on your iPhone, Palm Pilot, etc, then you owe it to yourself to check out http://manybooks.net/ There are thousands of free eBooks available for a lot of format choices, including Kindle, eReader, PDF, Mobipocket, Plucker, iSolo, and about twenty more. They're all public domain so they're free, but you'll find tons of books that you want to read if you look around. The "special collections" link has a list of "books to read before you die" if you need some ideas. I found several classics that I had thought about buying, and have expanded to a full library through the afternoon. I only stopped so I could actually read one of them.

You can get a program to view eBooks on your computer at http://www.ereader.com/ereader/software/browse.htm

If you use the eReader software for the iPhone, you need to click the "+" sign on your bookshelf screen, and choose "manybooks.net." It will download the book directly to your iPhone bookshelf. I don't know a way to transfer them from the PC, but they only take about three seconds to download on the phone, so I don't think it could get any easier.

Reading not your thing? Still want to enjoy a book? How about an audio book? "Too expensive," you say? Well, what if a bunch of people volunteer to read to you? That's what you get on http://librivox.org/ The file format seems to be MP3 and Ogg Vorbis for the ones I checked out. Be prepared for big downloads, though. You can get each part seperately, or look for the "entire book in zip format" link to get it all at once. If you're really bored or feeling altruistic, you can record yourself reading a part of a book and upload it for others to download. It's limited to public domain, though. Check the instructions on the website before you spend your day in your recording studio. (The manybooks.net site actually has a collection of books in a category called "Audible" that all have links to librivox.org so you can get the eBook and the Audio version.)

Of course, if you don't already know, most libraries allow you to check out eBooks and audio books from their web pages that expire after a certain amount of time. It is definitely worth it to get the latest book without paying a ton, as long as you don't feel the need to fill your own library.

I also haven't scratched the surface of Project Gutenburg (http://www.gutenberg.org/wiki/Main_Page) or the Google Book Search (http://books.google.com/). There are a ton of ways to get books for free, even if you don't want to leave your house to go to the library. It might motivate you to go check that building out again actually, when you start realizing how much money you're saving! Especially after shelling out the money for that iPhone!

Right now you can go to the website http://goreadgreen.com/ and get a free 1 year subscription to one of many magazines in a digital format. You read it online or in a downloadable viewer through Zinio where you usually have to pay full price for the subscriptions.

The magazines look great, and have clickable links in the table of contents to take you straight to the page you want to go to.

You can actually get one magazine per unique e-mail address, and all the magazines I got all opened in my one Zinio account. You get an e-mail each month when the next edition is available for you to view/download.

This is an amazing deal! It's too cool not to share!

Google usually makes some really cool things, and this one is no different. This really only helps the iPhone users, but is really awesome. Today, instead of trying to type "notary public" on a touch screen while driving and trying to hold the phone by the same screen, I could have just held the phone to my ear and said "notary public" and gotten the same results. Since driving and talking on a phone is illegal here, I could get a ticket, but I can easily say it wasn't a phone call, I was surfing the web.
