Kat: Oh, lipstick! Who doesn’t love the promise of glamour and excitement that red lipstick seems to beckon forth with? But I agree, if you’re a bit of a lipstick virgin, red is something to “work up to.” (Curious aside: isn’t interesting that no one seems to wear lipstick anymore? I feel like we’ve been in the gloss era for ages now.) Lipstick musings aside, I agree with my esteemed colleague below — a red lipstick takes a bit of experimentation and time to find. It’s almost like a new hobby! I’d actually start with a gloss or a stain first, because sometimes the density of pigment in a red lipstick takes a bit to get used to. (I always feel like my face is silently screaming, “Lips! Lips coming through!” when I’m wearing red lipstick.)
As far as particular shades, my recommendations would probably only work on a medium-skinned black-haired type with olive undertones in their complexion, because that is what I am. I began with an old tried-but-true, Cherries in the Snow by Revlon, which is a very 50s bright red. It didn’t work on me because I’m just not the right skin tone, but I know it works beautifully on others. On my burnished skin, the winning shade of red is Nars’ Lip Stain Gloss in “Indian Summer.” It is hella scarlet, for sure, but I love it because it does not go pinkish on my lips, which is what most red lipsticks tend to do. Most lip stains I find have a slightly weird texture — Nars’ Lip Stain is a bit less so in that respect, and the color really does stay put through many situations, ranging from meals to mouthing off to those dilemmas omnipresent in careers of international espionage. (God, it just sucks to make out with Daniel Craig on a semi-regular basis.) Nars rocks the party as a makeup line, anyway — the colors are very dense and true, plus the packaging is so chic and sophisticated and looks beautiful on a dresser or in a medicine cabinet. Like Liz, I am also fond of Fresh’s lip products in general, and I remember being awfully attached to their lipstick in a shade called “Rouge du Monde.” I can’t seem to find it now — what up, Fresh? Why you gotta treat us so bad? But I can also recommend their lip shine in “Sari,” which is a true gloss and really soft and not sticky in the least. (I’m also wanting to try the lip shine in “Dark Star” — it looks like a nice deeper brick red.) Anyway, I wish you the best on your future career as a beauty adventuress, sailing forth on the streets of America, silently calling “Lips! Lips!” to your comrades in red lipstick. (Kat)
Liz: You need to travel back in time a few years and get yourself a tube of Lady Tatami lip stain from Fresh. This is my all-time favorite lip color, but sadly it’s so far gone that Googling it yields only 5 results (three of which are me whining about how it’s not available anymore).
But yeah, I’m a red lipstick girl all the way – anything with even the slightest hint of pink makes me look half-dead, for some crazy reason. Right now I’m wearing Dazzling by Smashbox and I’m not so wild about it: It’s a little too shiny and sort of thin, whereas Lady Tatami was rich and creamy and an all-around dream-come-true. (And I’ll get over this someday, I swear – just not anytime soon.)
Anyway, getting to the actual advice portion of this advice column: I can tell you that I arrived at my dream color after many years of lipstick experimentation, mostly with the cheapest of the cheap makeup lines. Like, when I was 16 and 17 and maybe a little older, all I ever wore was Wet ‘N Wild’s fabulously named 508B, which cost me 99 cents per tube. The color was actually pretty awesome, though the texture was kinda cruddy and bad unless I layered some gloss on top. So, maybe a good strategy would be to play around with some really cheapo lipstick, find a color that you love, then try to replicate said color in a higher-quality makeup line? I’d give the thumbs-up to Fresh (even though I sort of hate them for discontinuing Lady Tatami), but right now I’ve got my eye on Yves Saint Laurent’s Rouge Pur Shine Sheer Lipstick in either Italian Cherry or Frosted Fig. I’ll keep you posted on how that all works out.
(Anyway, dear red-lipsticked inclined readers, what are YOUR recommendations in this department? And don’t forget to keeping Asking Us Anything!)

Catch the high concept on the homepage on the right-hand column.
Jan & Dean, “Norwegian Wood”
Wow! Really high-concept Heavy Rotation contribution from LJ this week: not one but two covers of The Beatles’ “Norwegian Wood” by not one but two of LJ’s All-time Faves, who are both making Heavy Rotation history by being the first two bands to be featured not once but twice in the HR database. Apparently there was a lot of internal Jan & Dean drama about the release and production of this song; I guess Dean didn’t like Jan’s production and didn’t want to release it as a single because it would be “embarrassing.” I definitely see both sides of the coin on this one: yeah, it’s crazy-lame compared to the actual Beatles version, especially when you put the sitch into the proper historical context. It’s also fabulously theatrical in the classic Southern California Gothic J&D tradition; wow, I can’t say anything else right now because I just blew my own mind with my own smartness by coining the term Southern California Gothic on the spot. Nice work, LJ. (LJ)
Yo La Tengo, “Tom Courtenay”
A friend of mine used to have (still has?) a t-shirt that says “Yo La Tengo for President” across the front. I actually think Yo La Tengo would make a terrible president, and I’m really relieved they decided not to run this year. In fact, I don’t have much use for the band in general, though the one time I saw them – playing between Luna and Sonic Youth on the Brown University quad in the spring of 1998 – they were mostly amazing. But I recently rediscovered this song and got pretty crazy for how exciting/life-affirming/nerdily fist-pumping the last minute and half or so is. Good job, guys. You’ve got my vote for zoning board chair at least. (Liz)
Animal Collective, “Cuckoo Cuckoo”
I haphazardly got really into this song around the time Heath Ledger died, so in some corner of my brain it was decided that this song is actually about Heath Ledger. Which it’s not, but I just looked at the lyrics for the first time and it’s kinda uncanny how accidentally intuitive I am. (Up until now I hardly knew one complete line of “Cuckoo Cuckoo” – for me, Animal Collective’s vocals aren’t so much words as they are just swirly-whirly sounds layered over all the other swirly-whirly sounds, and it’s generally best not to try to unravel much.) Soooo…the reason I’m posting this is I saw The Dark Knight a couple Fridays ago and loved it wildly of course, and now I wish I could watch it everyday for as long as it’s at the picture show. R.I.P. Joker. (Liz)
The Fiery Furnaces, “Norwegian Wood”
Boy! Was I ever thrilled to death (x 49085749873 to the power of 3.14) when I learned this song existed! I actually telephoned my ex-boyfriend the exact second after hearing it to let him know the awesomeness of what had happened for me. Some things just can’t be kept to oneself. I attempted to sing him the Friedbergered melody variation, but it came out sounding like an awkward/highly shoddy Bob Dylan impersonation, which led me to believe that Eleanor may be consciously aping Dylan with her vocal on this one. Which is cool, because this is a “consciously aping Dylan” John Lennon song, and so this proves that “it all comes full circle” (maybe?). Sadly, my vocal abilities are nowhere near advanced enough to capture the intricacies of “Eleanor Friedberger aping Bob Dylan aping John Lennon aping Bob Dylan.” Whoa. (Laura)
Maximillian Colby, “One Gallon Alda”/Rye Coalition, “Dover”
I’m doing something kind of strange this week and putting up an entire 7″ single from 1994 as my contribution to this week’s “Heavy Rotation.” I predict there are about three readers out there that will appreciate what a wondrous thing this is or understand how utterly, fiercely psyched I am — it’s taken me years to find these songs on mp3, having searched high and low and hunted websites devoted to post-hardcore and/or proto-emocore and contacted many a strange and eccentric character through tape- and record-trading venues. Basically all you need to know is this: Maximillian Colby were from Virginia, were beloved by a fervent few in the early 90s hardcore scene for combining the chaotic hardcore with the oblique song structures and dynamics of art-rock bands like Slint, released a few 7″ and 12″ records on really obscure labels and then various MC members went on to bands like Sleepytime Trio and Rah Bras. Rye Coalition had a different fate: they originally were part of that same scene but were from New Jersey, went on to develop a more (unfortunate) jock-rock kind of sound, opened up for Foo Fighters and now are in some sort of weird record label/band limbo I believe. Rye Coalition are not nearly as interesting now, but back in the day both Rye and Maximillian Colby made music that was urgent, dynamic, chaotic, intuitive and beautifully noisy — the sound of hearts and speed and smoke and fever. Now, if anyone out there has the Shotmaker/Maximillian Colby 12″ on mp3 — I’d love you forever. (Kat)

The other afternoon I was at the doctor’s office waiting to get my ears flushed out with a watergun (which I think is a very important thing for all human beings to do from time to time), leafing through an old issue of National Geographic. The cover story had to do with caffeine addiction, which might have been fairly interesting/educational to me if I wasn’t entirely preoccupied by the featured spread of baby cheetah pictures. There were also some pictures of adult cheetahs, but I barely noticed. I ripped a bunch of the cheetah cub pix out of the NG and shoved them into my notebook. I didn’t get caught, because I’m as sly as a fox, but how ridiculous would it have been to have gotten narc-ed for that crime?? Of all the crimes in the world!
Anyway, it’s really obvious that cheetah cubs are the most objectively cute baby animal of all the baby animals out there. If there’s one thing nogoodforme.com is lacking, it’s baby animal pics. We’ve gotten so caught up in the empty glamour of “eco-fashion” and “bands” and “fashion challenges,” we’ve lost sight of what really matters: newborn jungle-cats. Back on track, girls!

Asking me to choose between cheetah cubs and “Rocky”, George Harrison’s psychedelic Fender Stratocaster, is like asking a mother to choose which of her two identical newborn twins she loves more. George Harrison really made the right choice when he decided to filch bottles of then-wife Pattie Boyd’s nail varnish and paint all over his Strat with them. How is it that every freaking thing the Beatles did was just SO COOL?? (Laura)
Depeche Mode, Violator: the truest desert island CD everrrrrrr

I was talking on the phone with a particularly music-obsessed friend of mine, and he goaded and goaded me with one of those hypothetical questions that the music-obsessed love discussing in great detail: “If you could bring only ONE record with you on a desert island, what would it be?” Normally I try to be balanced and negotiate for a top 5 or whatever, but my dear obstinate friend wasn’t having it and accused me of being a “wuss” and “not taking a stand.” I promised to dwell and contemplate upon the answer, thus making it my de facto mental obsession for the week. So, okay, my dear friend who has promised to read this blog today for this very reason, here’s my freaking answer: Depeche Mode’s Violator! Now shut up and go listen your Nigerian 70s psych-rock compilation, jerky boy!
All joking aside, Depeche Mode and I go way, way back — I consider them my “gateway” band, the bridge between 80s pop fluff and what was affectionately known as “alternative” music or even “college rock” at the time. (Or even “modern rock” — that was my favorite.) Some Great Reward held sway in my DM discography rankings for a long, long time (and I still do think it’s a totes brilliant record, being geniusly perverse-lite as so much of DM is.) But recently I was folding clothes and listening to Violator when it hit me: how many times have I listened to this record? Countless times! I could sing every single note of every single track in my sleep. But I can also do this with many other records that I love dearly and hold close to my heart, so personal fervour cannot be the only reason that DM vaulted above many others to claim their title. There are also several, several music-critical reasons why Violator is considered a brilliant, watershed record of its genre: classic pop songwriting married to perfect production, beautiful, even lush arrangements, slightly subversive aesthetics yet classically emotional, the embodiment of the band’s artistic pinnacle coinciding with their commercial apotheosis (quite rare). But the revelation that it was the record above all records, though, came when I catalogued all the situations I have found Violator soundtracking at various points in my life (or have known to be playing during points of other people’s lives…let’s be a little mysterious here). An excerpted list of these situations is below:
1. Dancing (obviously)
2. Making out
3. Having sex
4. Post-sex
5. Cooking and/or baking
6. Doing laundry
7. Doing drugs
8. Homework
9. Getting ready to go out
10. Getting ready for bed
11. Getting ready for work
12. Post-traumatic breakup music
13. Actual breakup soundtrack
14. Driving
15. Pseudo-stalking
16. Trying to irritate a significant other
17. Cleaning
18. Paying bills
19. Shopping
20. Working out
21. Writing
22. Drowning out unwanted background noise
23. Indulging of nostalgia
24. Indulging of melancholia
25. Indulging of anger, passive-aggressive
26. Indulging of anger, direct
27. Quelling restlessness
28. Reading
29. Making mixes
30. Pure listening (you know, when you actually put on music and just listen)
31. Many, many more
In short, there are very few situations (inciting riots, for instance) in which Violator cannot be used as suitable music for me. (There are lots of other records I love, but they aren’t nearly as broad in their situational reach — I don’t imagine turning to Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers) for post-breakup solace, for instance, and I’ve never had the urge to break it down on the dance floor to Lync’s These Are Not Fall Colors.) It fulfills almost any situation that I would want music for and is the most versatile record I own. For this reason alone, Violator would go on a desert island with me, where I am sure it will make for great music while 1. signalling for help or 2. investigator weird island monsters and/or cults or 3. indulging in spa treatments or 4. dying of death and starvation. (I could never figure out if the whole desert island scenario was either luxurious or apocalyptic in nature.) I really am just a practical girl, after all. (Kat)

Outside of perfume and eyebrows, skincare is pretty much the only genuine beauty interest I have — otherwise I am the laziest human on earth when it comes to grooming. (I barely brush my hair once a day.) I have ventured far and wide in my quest for that ultimate transformative product/treatment — obscure, expensive Japanese lines, totally organic and natural ones, super-luxe European-only ones, high-end dermatologist-created ones, weird treatments utilizing the enzymes gathered from the internal organs of small farm creatures. (You think I’m joking on that last one, don’t you?) Strangely, though, the ultimate best product that I absolutely could not live without comes from a humble Midwestern mid-range department store chain whose only location in the NYC area requires me to travel using the PATH train into the glorious wilds of New Jersey. And PATH train-travel I do, because in the strangest alchemy of alchemies, my skin absolutely adores American Beauty‘s Beauty Boost Overnight Radiance cream, which is sold at Kohls. It’s supposed to “soothe, firm and brighten.” I suppose it does those things, but what it really does is keep me from breaking out, ever, and keeps my skin smooth and happy as a clam. (And when I go without it, my skin goes berserk in a bad way, like today on this vacation when I stupidly forgot my jar of it and now I’m like, “MOM, I NEED TO GO TO KOHL’S NOW!!!!!!”) Plus, it seems to keep me looking fairly youthful at my advanced age, because a few days ago I went to my local equestrian center for a riding lesson and the other girls asked me what college I went to and what my major was. I love that. My braids might have had something to do with it, though, and I’m sure being Asian contributes in some way. (Kat)
St. Ives Apricot Scrub: The “The Beatles” of Skincare
(It’s the latest and the greatest of them all, I’ll have you know.)

(from left to right: St. Ives Apricot Scrub; actual apricots)
If you’ve ever had a zit in your life, you probably shouldn’t read what I’m about to write because you might start resenting me a little. I do understand: I feel the exact same way about all the people in the world who have never had insomnia or a headache or pulsatile tinnitus. We all have our sore spots, and mine sure ain’t on my face! I’m seriously blessed, having been borne from a long line of flawlessly-complexioned, wrinkle-free Southern European babes who swear by, um, nothing. What’s your secret?, people occasionally ask me, and I feel guilty about admitting that I don’t even wash my face, which I never-ever did, until about three weeks ago.
Three weeks ago, I took action, got some initiative together, and did something for my skin. I mean, it couldn’t hurt, right? I decided to find out what all the St. Ives Apricot Scrub-related fuss is all about- said inexpensive sandy scrapey goonk is the O.G “guaranteed to make your skin awesome!” product, lauded by Allure magazine and approximately 86% of Americans as the official best thing ever forever. You have to start somewhere.
The first time I put this weird cement-mix on my face, it hurt me, and a few hours later, I looked at my face in the mirror and my skin looked WORSE THAN IT HAD EVER LOOKED IN MY LIFE. In the space of three-odd hours, I’d developed the same amount of blemishes that I’ve had in the past seven years. Plus I had some super-sexy red splotches splattered here and there. I was the Jackson Pollock of faces. I learned quickly, however, that this is just what happens with exfoliation: first it makes your skin nasty, because it brings all the crap that has been lurking beneath it since you were five years old to the surface. But it all pays off in the end- you just gotta believe!
My skin looks better than ever, and it feels really nice to the touch. As soft as an apricot, I guess you could say. Now when people inquire about my skincare regimen, I can say “I exfoliate tri-weekly,” and they’ll won’t get all snarky with me anymore.
PS: My goal is to graduate to Kiehl’s Pineapple Papaya Face Care Scrub in due time, but I’m still so new to the whole skincare game that twenty-five bucks for face stuff seems like highway robbery! (Laura)
The Skin-Care Products Liz Can’t Live Without

My biggest skin problem is that breaking-out-around-the-chin thing that I know taunts and torments many other ladies around my age. It’s gotten waaaay better over the last couple of years, and for that I would like to thank: (1) switching from super-harsh facial cleansers to gentler/milder stuff, and (2) switching from creamy foundation to marvelous mineral makeup (I use Bare Escentuals; I love it). Also, sometime last year I started drinking coffee again for the first time since college, and my skin got noticeably clearer. I have no explanation for that, but it’s kinda interesting, no?
So, these are the five skin-care products I swear by. Oh, and a couple years ago I went through a big phase of drinking that Get Gorgeous tea from Republic of Tea, and it seemed to help a lot, but at some point I fell out the habit and totally forgot about it. I’d say it’s worth giving a whirl, though.
1. Cetaphil. This is that gentler/milder stuff I was speaking of. Pre-Cetaphil (but post-rip-your-face-off astringents & scrubs), I used some really nice cleansing milk stuff from Phytomer, but I’m convinced Cetaphil gets the job done just as well, at about a tenth of the price. I don’t even buy actual Cetaphil; I just get a big huge tub of the generic Safeway version and it lasts like a year. Cetaphil = love.
2. Lush’s Angels on Bare Skin (not shown above, ’cause it’s just so weird-looking). I wrote about this stuff before, and here’s what I said: “It’s made from ground almonds and rose and lavender – with a bunch of fat little dried lavender buds right in the jar – and it’s got a really fun spongy consistency that feels so nice on your skin. The product’s not supersmooth, so I like to put a dab on my palm and then swirl it around with a few drops of warm water before smearing it on. It makes your face feel so soft and fresh and most likely won’t irritate even the most irritable of skin (such as mine).” STILL ALL TRUE.
3. Aubrey Organics Green Tea Rejuvenating Mask. I use this probably twice a week to miraculously draw away all those evil impurities that beautiful/toxic Los Angeles likes to soak into my skin. It’s also good to use as a spot treatment when you’re breaking out. And Aubrey’s a great company that does lots of great things for this great planet of ours. Buy the mask here.
4. Skin Amnesty Restore/Protect Serum. Apparently I’m getting to that age where it’s a smart idea to start using skin-care products that promise to “restore the skin’s youthful appearance.” (How’d that happen? I thought I was 12!) This stuff’s real nice but a little pricey ($80 for 1.67 ounces), and I might soon be ditching it for my recently discovered Kiehl’s Abyssine Serum, which costs about half as much and seems to serve the same purpose.
5. Caudalie Grape Water. I first heard about the magical grape water when Misha mentioned it in their nogoodforme interview a little while back. Now I’m addicted and want to spray it on my face 8 million times a day. I usually use it to help my makeup set, but it’s also purrrrrfect when it’s about a thousand degrees out and you need a shot of something cool and hydrating and delightfully raisin-scented. Keep it in the fridge!

Along with Chuck Klosterman, Emmanuelle Alt, and possibly Michael Showalter, Diana Vreeland belongs to the elite group of human beings that we would allow to join the nogoodforme.com team if they asked politely. Which is great, because I’m quite sure that if DV were around today, she would drop her editorial position at Vogue like a sack of hot potatoes if the opportunity to join forces with Kat, Liz & Laura Jane came up. I mean, duh.
If Diana (pronounced Dee-Ann, for glamour’s sake) Vreeland hadn’t moved on to Fashion Heaven in 1989, today would have been her 103rd birthday. And if Diana Vreeland had lived to be 103 years old, boy, would she ever have revolutionized 100+ dressing! I’m thinking peacock-embellished wheelchairs, yellow diamond-studded hearing aids, and prune-tinis. Hot.
We at nogoodforme.com are all about breaking any and every rule of fashion, stomping all the hell over Vuitton Youth culture with the rubber souls of our comfy flats (NOT Jimmy Choos!). Nobody in the history of haute-whatevs broke rules like DV, and so on this day, we are honoring our Patron Saint of Ready-to-wear Rebellion with a scrappified and contemporary update of Vreeland’s infamous Harper’s Bazaar “Why Don’t You?” column.
Some sample “Why Don’t You?”s of Diana’s include:
+Why don’t you… wash your child’s hair with champagne?
+Why don’t you… wear violet velvet mittens with everything?
+Why don’t you… have your cigarettes stamped with a personal insignia?
Why don’t I have every cigarette I smoke individually stamped with LJF? Good point, Diana.
And now… WHY (THE HELEN KELLER) DON’T YOU?

A few weeks ago I stumbled into the Elizabeth Charles boutique in NYC’s meatpacking district and fell kind of hard for the dresses of Australian line Thurley, who do these understated, romantic frocks that are vintage-inspired in a ‘glamorous librarian’ type of way. It’s an upscale, more luxurious version of how I dressed in my middle college years and what I’m starting to get back into. (Whether this means I am reverting back to being wide-eyed, overtly idealistic and romantically delusional as I was back then, though, remains to be seen.) I like to think about fall fashion in late July, especially since I’ve hit my ‘summer fashion fatigue point’ and am missing boots and jackets bigtime lately. What I love about Thurley is that everything is so well-made and elegantly timeless, you could wear the clothes for years and they’d still be lovely and exquisite. Lately I like that feeling, especially since I’m dreaming of saving all my money for 1. the RED camera or 2. a trip to Antarctica or 3. an Orange amp. (Kat)
Many t-shirts, several of them stupid
Ever since declaring my lack of faux-vintage shame a while back, I’ve felt wonderfully free to be really cheesy in my t-shirt selection. So these are some of the tees I want right now: Not all are cheesy/stupid/whatevs, but probably about half of them are.
Top row, left to right:
+ I don’t get what this RVCA Firing Squad tee means. If you can explain it to me, I’ll give you five dollars. Also, it’s probably impossible to get now, but if it were still being sold I’d tell you to buy it at Killer Dana.
+ The little critters on Andy Only Eats Candy’s Finnish Animals shirt are so adorable and friendly-looking, plus “Andy Only Eats Candy” is just about my favorite label name ever.
+ This is how much I love Batman: While reading Esquire at the Arclight Cinemas magazine rack and waiting for my friends on opening night of The Dark Knight, a bunch of kids came up and stood next to me and started talking all this spoily stuff about the movie, and I literally RAN AWAY so as not to hear them. I don’t know if I’d actually wear this Batman tee from Delia’s, though it might make for pretty fly gym attire.
Bottom row:
+ Blood is the New Black, whom we love, is having a big sale right now and this Patrick Jilbert-designed shirt is only $15. What a steal! The words are from “Back Then” by Mike Jones, which I know from track 11 on the second Girl Talk record.
+ I almost bought the butterfly shirt when I was buying my favorite new dress a couple weeks back, but then I didn’t.
+ And yay, the Yellowstone rainbow shirt from Forever 21. I wish I were Forever 21-immune, but I’m just not. They’ve also got a tee that says “I’m Good For You,” which is kind of like the opposite of “No Good For Me.” So totally don’t buy that shirt!!! (Liz)
Martin Lamothe cape dress, pixiemarket.com
Pixie Market is one of my absolute favorite cutesy-wutesy boutiques in all of New York City. It’s a small space, but its hella fun, brilliantly curated, and packed to the brim with girly, whimsical Rainbow Brite-meets-Catherine Deneuve-circa-1963 dresses, rompers, tops, and all that other good stuff. It’s the kind of store that I’ll rarely allow myself to check out for fear that I will be driven insane by the extraordinarily imbalanced ratio of “items I want” to “amount of money in my pocket.”
This cape dress by Barcelona-based designer Martin Lamothe epitomizes the patented nogoodforme.com concept of “avant-wack“: the silhouette is thoughtful and cerebral, but the pattern brings just the right amount of wack to the table. This dress is particularly exciting to me because it look like it would be as comfortable as PJs. You could wear it out until the wee hours of the morn, dancing your face off and feeling like the flyest fly on the whole wall, then arrive home exhausted but too hyped-up to sleep, and this dress would transition perfectly into “curling up on the couch completing a blurry-eyed crossword and glugging Evian” attire. You might think that dropping two hundred bones on a geometric-rainbow-print heavy-batwing minidress was a bad investment, but hey: any dress that can function as a blanket is a justifiable purchase in my books. As nogoodforme.com continues its ascent into Total Universe Takeover by venturing into the endlessly entertaining realm of food blogging, my culinary no-how has left me feeling like a bit of an outcast. But whatever- I may be a crap cook, but I’m damned awesome at eating and spending money!
My new agenda is to eat whatever the hell I feel like eating whenever the hell I feel like eating it, but all-the-while always making sure to photograph my meals out, because eventually I will eat the same general thing five times, and when I do, what have you got? One of nogoodforme.com’s “Best of Five with Laura Jane” posts! The concept is self-explanatory, and if you honestly can’t grasp what I’m going for here, well, I’m sure you’ll put two and two together in about three sentences’ time.
(PS: don’t forget to make some Tom Yum Pops ASAP! I would, if I weren’t so lazy and useless in the kitchen)
1. Bangkok Paradise, 506 Queen St. West

Order: Thai Spicy Eggplant (Phad Ma Kuna); sticky rice; glass of house white wine
Price: $7.95; $1.95; $4.95
What it should have cost: I would say that this meal was adequately priced, except for that I am constantly irritated by having to pay extra for sticky rice. It should come free with the meal.
Food Wrap-up: The quality of my meal at Bangkok Paradise really epitomized the ever-familiar Thai food category of “on the good side of mediocre”. I mean, whatevs. It was kind of good; it was vaguely bad. The eggplant was dank (“dank” means “tasty as all-get-out” in my books; I stole that phrasing from my NoCal roommates a couple years ago and never looked back), but the green peppers were undercooked. It was a nice amount of spicy, but the sticky rice coagulated too fast. Etc.
Notes on Ambiance: Ambiance? More like non-ambiance. The inside of this restaurant looks like absolutely nothing. I know that according to Charles Eames or somebody similar, the best design is invisible, but I don’t think this is what t/he/y meant. Nevertheless, the service was pretty good, and the staff was all about making sure our meals were spiced to our exact preferred level of spiciness. I appreciated that; who wouldn’t?
Apex of Meal: The presence of a house white, duh.
Abyss of Meal: There was no salt on the table! I over-salt my food worse than anybody you’ve ever met in your life, so that is total blasphemy in my books.
Likeliest Context of Next Visit: I would eat here any time I was in the Queen/Bathurst area and felt like eating Thai food. So next week, probably. And then probably again the week after that, and so on and so forth for the rest of the time I live in Toronto.
Overall Rating (out of 100%): 81%: the solidest B minus you ever tasted.

2. Spoon & Fork, 2345 Trafalgar Rd, Oakville

Order: Mixed Vegetables in Thai Sauce; Coconut Sticky Rice
Price: $10.00 (sticky rice included!)
What it should have cost: Maybe $3.
Food Wrap-up: This was the worst Thai food EVER. I guess maybe it’s my own fault for ordering such a boring dinner, but I thought it made sense within the context of a “Best Of” format to order the simplest thing on the menu. You know: if they can make good mixed vegetables, they’re probably a good Thai place. Well, if that’s the case, then Spoon & Fork is an even worse Thai place than I thought. Apparently in the world of Spoon & Fork, “Thai sauce” means either “no sauce” or “vegetabley water”, which would suck for the good people of Thailand if I hadn’t eaten a billion other Thai sauces that were actual sauce and not just a lack thereof. Also, I was really stoked about the fact that I was getting rice that was both sticky and coconut at the same time, since I never eat plain steamed rice and figured this would be the best of both worlds. Unfortunately for me, it was the best of neither world: Spoon & Fork’s coconut sticky rice is a) not sticky and b) didn’t taste like coconut.
Notes on Ambiance: Kind of hot for Oakville. I guess?
Apex of Meal: I ate it while watching Episode Four of The Beatles Anthology. Also: It got better when I doused it in Tamari.
Abyss of Meal: Dude, everything! Luckily for you, you will never eat here, because you will probably never visit Oakville, Ontario. If you live in Oakville and feel like eating Thai food, you should go to Thai Satay and More, which is awesome. Actually, scratch that: if you live in Oakville and feel like eating Thai food, you should suppress your desire, eat Ramen instead, and save up your cash so you can move the hell out of Oakville.
Likeliest Context of Next Visit: My Dad says the Pumpkin Curry Soup is really good, so maybe if I’m in the mood to give S&F a second chance I’ll check that out.
Overall Rating (out of 100%): 23%: F MINUS
3. Urban Thai, 638 College St.

Order: Thai Eggplant; Fragrant Sticky Rice with tangy peanut sauce; Bartender’s Rootbeer
Price: $7.95; $2.50; $6.50
What it should have cost: I guess around that, but the service was such garbage that the Bartender’s Rootbeer should have been free of charge.
Food Wrap-up: I know I’m impossibly boring and order the same thing over and over again, but whatevs, man, that’s my prerogative: it’s better than being adventurous and ending up with something you hate. I only recently discovered the versatility and culinary magic of eggplant: like portobello mushrooms and/or squash, eggplant functions more as a protein or starch than a meager vegetable: it’s hearty, filling and totally substantial. Stupidly, I squeezed an entire lime over my meal without thinking about it, so I accidentally turned my Thai Eggplant into “Thai Eggplant: Extreme Lime”, which not exactly my preference. I liked how the peppers and onions and eggplant were cooked down really soft together so it was kind of a soupy/saucy consistency. The sticky rice wasn’t very sticky, but it was purple, which is cool, so I forgot to care. I was excited that the basic sticky rice came with free tangy peanut sauce, but it wasn’t tangy. It was barely even peanutty! Quel drag.
Notes on Ambiance: It was really weird when “Fire Water Burn” by the Bloodhound Gang started blasting mid-meal. Apparently Urban Thai recently underwent a huge renovation/redecoration; it was once a total dive, now it’s kind of swank and suave. Unfortunately, the service was appalling. My friend didn’t get her Teriyaki Chicken until fifteen minutes after the rest of us were served: that’s just plain SILLY.
Apex of Meal: I was drunk when I showed up, was accompanied by fun friends, and all the waitresses were hella cute, so I hated them less than I might have otherwise.
Abyss of Meal: I had to teach the bartender how to make a Bartender’s Rootbeer, which was misspelled as a Bartender’s Rootbear on the menu (cute, huh?). FYI: A Bartender’s Rootbeer is: Galliano, Kahlua, (diet) Coke, and soda water. I’d been excited to try one for, like, ever, but wouldn’t humiliate myself by ordering something so obviously lame at a real bar. In conclusion: it was too sweet.
Likeliest Context of Next Visit: I’ll probably try Cafe 668 instead. I guess if I was with adamant carnivores I’d go back.
Overall Rating (out of 100%): 65%, though I probably would have given it Bangkok Paradise’s rating if Bangkok Paradise hadn’t stolen it.
4. Richtree Market, Brookfield Place, 181 Bay St.

Order: Mixed Vegetables, Tofu & Steamed Rice with Teriyaki Sauce, which was supposed to be Thai Peanut Sauce but the dude heard me wrong, or maybe just didn’t care.
Price: I don’t remember and have no way of finding out, but I do remember that it was decidedly ridiculous.
What it should have cost: Considerably less than it did.
Food Wrap-up: The night I got Thai food from Richtree Market was a pretty hilarious night in the life of Laura Jane. It was a rainy Sunday evening and I was really sauced and had to catch a train at 8:43 PM and had to eat Thai food for my nogoodforme.com Best of Five article, and was scampering down the street listening to the Beatles and drunk-dialing all the stupidest people I could possibly drunk-dial, and was slurring to strangers, “UH WHERE’S BAY STREET?” while I was on Bay Street, and every single Thai restaurant in all of Toronto was closed (because it was Sunday, and Toronto kind of sucks sometimes). Richtree Market was my only option. If you’re from Toronto, I know you’re thinking: “Oh God, Laura Jane, I cannot believe you went to Richtree! Of all places! Richtree!” but I did, so deal with it. Richtree is nasty, lame, annoying, overpriced, overpopulated, and obviously fundamentally opposed to everything fundamentally LJ about LJ, but it happened, and guess what? It was DELISH.
Notes on Ambiance: NUFF SAID
Apex of Meal: Shoveling it into my face at a mile a minute on a commuter train whilst simultaneously leaving Liz Barker a voicemail, attempting to “figure out what it tastes like for my nogoodforme Thai Food review,” and listening/mouthing along to “Carrie-Anne” by the Hollies. With my mouth full, of course.
Abyss of Meal: Ripping chunks of hair out of my skull while the stupid loser spooned it into a take-out container slower than I knew was humanly possible; how I actually bothered to fork over the extra two bucks for tofu & veggie rather than plain veggie, which meant (literally) two chunks of raw, unseasoned tofu were hastily tossed into the stir-fry. A buck apiece, folks. A buck apiece.
Likeliest Context of Next Visit: If my ex-boyfriend’s accountant father ever feels like taking me out, we’ll probably go here, in which case you’d better believe I’m ignoring the faux-Asian station and getting a strawberry lemonade and a Rosti.
Overall Rating (out of 100%): 4%? 93%? God only knows. Food tastes really good when you’re starving and drunk as a skunk.
PS: In case you’re wondering, that photograph of me was indeed taken in a GO Train bathroom.
5. Thai Express, 505 University Ave.; Toronto Eaton Centre; Oakville Place Mall; nowhere-Alberta; etc.

Order: Medium-spicy Eggplant Vegetable Stir-Fry with a Fountain Diet Coke and Tom Yum Mini-soup
Price: $8 and change for the whole gang!
What it should have cost: I would have paid $11 without even blinking an eye.
Food Wrap-up: I spilled the Tom Yum mini-soup all over myself within five minutes of walking home, but all I can say is that it smelled really nice and that this person liked it. The eggplant curry is actually the second-best Thai Eggplant I’ve ever eaten after that offered at Montreal, Quebec’s absolutely impenetrable Eden Thai, which makes me feel sort of lame: like, “Really, Laura? Is fast-food Thai-crapola chain stir-fry honestly one of your all-time favorite Thai Eggplants?” Well, yes. Thai Express’ ever-trustworthy veggie/eggplant/rice/spice/sauce ratio is just so impressive. As a matter of fact: it’s perfection.
Notes on Ambiance: I’ve never been to a Thai Express that isn’t situated in a shopping mall food court, which forges the concept of “ambiance” into something of a moot point. However, Thai Express’ branding and packaging is pretty much the coolest thing ever: your order is always parceled in a precious little takeout crate, and their whole “Spicy Girls” system turns deciding upon a heat preference into a fun game akin to “choosing your favorite Beatle.” Oh yeah, and the portion size of said crate is about as totally effing perfect as the sauce/food/rice ratio.
Apex of Meal: Being a vegan, it’s really nice to know that if I’m ever stuck in a strip mall in the middle of nowhere-Alberta, I’ll be able to procure a healthy and satisfying meal that isn’t a 99-cent baggie of honey-roasted peanuts with a side of Jujyfruits. In the past, I’ve heavily relied upon whole-wheat veggie Subways in such situations, but you can only eat so many preservative-soaked banana peppers before the novelty wears way off. By the way, veg.ca‘s index of Vegan Fast Food Options is really helpful when it comes to “I’m a vegan in nowhere-Alberta” dilemmas; PETA’s I Can’t Believe It’s Vegan! directory is equally enlightening, but also kind of creepy (MANWICH SAUCE SHOULD NOT BE VEGAN!!!).
Abyss of Meal: Sometimes you don’t want your Thai food to be purchased from a mall food court.
Likeliest Context of Next Visit: I’m hungry in a mall food court and the line-up at Teriyaki Experience is too long.
Overall Rating (out of 100%): 86%! Convenient, tasty and cheap. We have a winner!
