{Guest Post} Finding the Perfect Dress

For so many women, finding “the dress” is the key to a successful wedding. Perfect dress equals

happy bride which in turn equals happy groom, the combination of which creates the blissful

beginning that is essential to every successful marriage (which is the whole point after all). It is

the key feature of the all important photographs; those physical memories that will be shown to

children, grandchildren, and, ultimately, outlive the once glowing couple that occupies their fading

facades.

Unfortunately the “perfect dress” doesn’t come cheap and it often seems that no expense will be

spared in finding it. In a society fraught with recession, budget weddings are becoming more and

more sought after, yet the budget dress remains very much taboo and those who find it prefer not

to disclose its true value to even their closest friends.

But what is the “perfect dress”? Since the early 90s, the simple strapless dress has dominated the

bridal gown market, forcing women to squeeze bodies of all shapes and sizes into bodices that,

unfortunately, do many of them no favours. A veil will only cover a small number of sins, and with

more and more brides opting for a simpler headdress alternative, mighty cleavages, back flab and

bingo wings are being exposed for all to see and, of course, forever immortalized in every one of

those photographs. We want to look our most beautiful, but it is equally important to be true to

the uniqueness of our bodies, personalities and values. I have always been anti-strapless and pro-

budget, and was able to demonstrate both in my choice of wedding dress, and I am happy to see

more and more brides doing the same. Here are a few suggestions for finding the wedding dress of

your dreams (not everyone elses).

1) Hit the high street.

This is not the most ethical of options but certainly a good starting

point for brides on a budget. Many well known high street retailers are venturing down the

wedding dress road, and some have achieved breathtaking results. As is often the problem

with shop bought clothes, the sizes are generic, but find a good dress maker to do your

alterations and your beautiful dress will soon fit like a glove. This is definitely not the eco-

bride option, but buying online will improve your carbon footprint.

2) Customize.

With strapless dresses occupying the majority of the market, these will be the

easiest gowns to pick up in sales and outlet stores. But if, like me, the strapless dress is just

not for you, get customizing. Some vintage lace can make beautiful straps or a waistband,

or the addition of a beautiful bolero can transform your dress into the one-of-a-kind you’ve

been dreaming of.

3) Recycle.

If your own mother or grandmother’s dress is exactly what you’ve been looking for,

then absolutely wear it. But the reality is that those dresses will often be out dated or just

not to your taste. Instead try companies such as Bliss Studio (www.blissstudio.co.uk) and

Oxfam Bridal (www.oxfam.org), to give lovely worn-once dresses another chance to walk

down the aisle.

4) Vintage.

Not always budget, but a great option for eco-brides and those looking for

something totally unique. Some stores and websites do charge a small fortune, but if you

enjoy the chase, try traipsing the vintage stores – you never know where your dream dress

might be hiding.

5) Ebay.

It is true what they say that you can everything on Ebay, and wedding dresses are no

exception.

6) Borrow.

Not everyone has the guts required to ask someone if you can borrow their

wedding dress but, the fact is, they’re not going to be wearing it again and you only need it

for one day. Ask and you may well receive!

7) Support the little guy. Want a handmade dress without the cost? Seek out new designers

on websites such as Etsy (www.etsy.com) for gorgeous gowns made with love.

8) DIY.

Only for the very brave. Find a pattern you love, pick out the perfect fabric and whizz

together your dream dress.

Brooch Bouquet #2

10 "Somethings Borrowed" from Nature for Your Wedding

Everybody uses flowers, but what about all the other awesome parts of nature? Go on a walk and get creative but keep in mind that all of these things are an important part of the natural ecosystems. If you decide to pick something up and use it, be respectful and responsible. Lots of things like rocks, shells and twigs can all be returned to their natural home after the wedding. When you go collecting, pick things up in small batches (you may need to make multiple trips) and go to multiple different locations so no one place is depleted.

Decorate Your Wedding with Pine Cones!

It never occurred to me before this morning that you could use pine cones instead of flowers for wedding decoration! I think pine cones have a look that's rustic, classy and wholesome. If you're lucky enough to live in a region (like the Pacific Northwest) where forest floors are littered with these little beauties then why not make the most of them!! Don't completely clear them out though because don't forget they are necessary to keep the forest multiplying and healthy. Perhaps, pick them up in small batches from a variety of locations. They are beautiful but no need to be greedy :P

Bird Feathers — Ethically Sourced

I would like to send out a BIG thank you to an anonymous reader who brought my attention to a flaw in my post from earlier today. This morning's post was all about using bird feathers in your wedding centerpieces, bouquets, dresses etc.. A few of these photographs feature feathers that are from exotic types of birds (ostriches & peacocks) and many of them are more likely than not obtained by killing the birds. This is obviously NOT something that No Impact Bride wishes to support. The photographs were originally intended to be used merely as inspiration for the kinds of things you can do with feathers. I realise now, thanks to this on-the-ball reader, that I need to be more thoughtful about the message I'm sending with the photographs I select to publish. I have chosen to leave up the photographs from the earlier post so they can a) remain and inspiration and b) be an example of what we need to be careful to avoid.

{Little Feather}

If you would like to use feathers in your wedding, please use feathers that you find laying on the ground outside. These feathers were shed from the birds naturally and you are not endangering the birds by using them. It will probably take you a while to collect enough if you're hoping to use quite a lot. If you don't have enough time to collect them one-by-one then you might need to make some changes to your decoration plans and use something like wild grasses instead. (Wild grasses can have the natural, wispy look to them that feathers have.) If you find the idea of picking up "dirty" feather from the ground disgusting (I know some people who do) then again, perhaps you should reconsider using feathers in your decoration. Did you know it's possible to wash and paint feathers too? :) If you really love the look of peacock feathers then try painting your pigeon feathers purple and green! :)

This post has a few photographs of boutonnieres and a couple other things made using the kinds of feathers you kind find around shed naturally by local birds. If you live in a region similar to mine then you're going to probably end up with lots of duck, seagull and pigeon feathers. These birds may not sound to glamorous but some of their feathers can be stunning!

I also love the fact that when I hold a feather in my hand I know that it has been soaring in air. I have a massive collection of feathers and I used some to decorate my own wedding. Birdhouse Wedding Inspiration

Birdhouses are an amazing way to help the environment! The Industrial Revolution had a very negative impact on songbird populations but in recent years, thanks to feather-friendly people putting up birdhouses, songbirds are much happier. Birds can survive outdoors but with a house of their very own it's so much easier (and safer) to raise healthy baby birds. When it's easier for birds to reproduce, the bird gene-pool becomes more diverse which means that the birds will be healthier. It's important that we have birds in this world not only because they brighten up the early morning with their pretty tunes but because they also control insect populations and this leads to a well rounded eco-system! Make or buy birdhouses for your wedding as decorations or favours! After the wedding they'll hang around for years to come as a happy reminder of your day and as a happy home to a wee birdie :D

Whether you give them an organic treat to eat or a handful of seeds to feed some wildlife, green wedding favors have the potential to be very personal, wholesome and creative. To reduce wedding waste, try and give your guests something they will actually use or keep. There's no need to spend mountains of money either. Favours are the perfect DIY opportunity! Buying yourself a 'once-worn' wedding dress is a fab way to save money and make your wedding more sustainable. Most wedding dresses only get to be worn once and then they have to spend the rest of eternity in the back of a dusty closet. Some dresses are lucky enough to be re-sold and have a second stroll down the aisle. Often, these pre-loved dresses are sold online but this can be very difficult for brides-to-be who want to try on multiple dresses before committing to a purchase.

Bliss Bridal Studio in Edinburgh offers brides the opportunity to buy pre-loved gowns without missing out on the exciting bridal "pampering experience." Yoga for Brides - Relieve Planning Stress

I don't know of anyone who managed to plan their wedding without at least one little stress explosion. What better way to relieve stress than by practicing yoga!? I may be biased seeing as I have just returned from a yoga retreat but nevermind that, it's the truth!

Yoga relaxes the body and the mind. Asanas (a.k.a. poses or postures) that involve forward bending or inversions (a.k.a. lifting your heart above the level of your head) are great for letting all that wedding stress flow right out of your fingertips.

If you already practice yoga, you know what to do. For anyone who would like a little guidance in their pursuit of tranquility, below you will find a few asanas that are just what you're looking for...

SHOULDER STAND

Salamba Sarvangasana or 'shoulder stand' is the queen of all yoga posture. It is an excellent place to go it your mind is racing and you wish to calm it down. It is also a good place to go if you're upset or can't stop thinking about something that's bothering you.

THE POSE OF TRANQUILITY

From shoulder stand, lower your legs down over your head until they are parallel with the floor. Your elbows can be bent with your hands resting comfortably on your thighs or you can straighten you elbows and have your hands below your knees. To make this pose more 'tranquil' place a chair behind you on which you can rest your feet. With the chair holding some of your weight you can relax deeper. Hold this pose for ten minutes. That seems like an awfully long period of time but somehow it passes rather quickly when you're in this position. The first time I went into it, 10 minutes felts like 3 or 4. Amazing!

BALASANA

The child's pose is a wonderful way to curl up and focus internally for a few minutes. Kneel on the floor, bring your toes together and sit back onto your heels. Bend forward and the hips so that your torso relaxes on top of your thighs. Your arms rest beside you and your hands are by your feet. If this is uncomfortable for you, place a blanket or cushion between your calfs and your hamstrings. This pose lets you retreat from the bright and busy world and have a rest in the quiet dark space where you can be alone with your mind and your breath.

SAVASANA

Savasana (corpse pose) is a wonderful way to take a break from whatever is happening around you. All you have to do is lie on your back with your arms and legs spread out, close your eyes and breath deeply. Focus on the sound of your breath and if your mind starts to wander be compassionate with it and just bring it back to the breath. Repurposed Pallets

Pallets! Warehouses and yards are full of them and I think it's about time we use them for weddings! A lot of these things could be made for your wedding and then kept as furniture for your home afterwards.

Admittedly, most of these projects require a bit of crafty building skills but I guess that makes this the perfect opportunity to either learn how to use a hammer or speak sweetly to your DIY friends. If nothing else, hopefully these photos will spark an idea in your head for something else you could do! I hope you like these awesome repurposing projects as much as I do...
