Grant Arnow (vocals) and Sergio Ruelas (lead guitar) had been members of Takota, a band that had toured extensively, yet idled hopelessly on the roster of a major record label. The two had grown more steadfast in their belief that rock music could be socially aware, epic in proportion, and deeply sincere, and they set off to build the band they’d wanted to be in as 11 year-old boys. Together, they scoured the greater Los Angeles area for it’s brightest and most talented players. They found guitarist/vocalist Devon Pangle – originally from El Paso, TX – spinning his creative wheels in endless recording sessions, looking for an outlet for his prolific riff-addiction. Chester Lang – drummer, originally from San Luis Obispo – was recommended by the Viper Room’s talent buyer, who was aware of his eagerness to find musicians that could push him creatively. Finally, bassist Rocko McIvor – a Las Vegas native, and veteran of the Devil’s Orchestra – grabbed hold of the band, to infuse his unique musicality and style on its sound. Together, they’ve experienced wild success in Japan, performing at the 2011 Summer Sonic Festival to a rowdy crowd of 5,000 and fielding two singles on the Japanese radio charts (with more to come).

Set List:
Goodnight Moon

Said the Whale formed in 2007 as a collaboration between songwriters Ben Worcester and Tyler Bancroft. The pair’s debut EP, Taking Abalonia, featured sunny west coast indie pop, with breezy harmonies, shimmering guitars and lyrical tributes to their home city of Vancouver, “nodding at times to the sea shanties of Neutral Milk Hotel and at others to the boat-shoe-gazing of Vampire Weekend” said The National Post. In 2008, the album was re-released as Howe Sounds/Talking Abalonia, featuring seven additional tracks that stretched the band’s stylistic palate to upbeat folk (“The Light Is You”), thundering rock (“Last Tree Standing”) and gentle ukulele ballads (“The Real of It”). After several line-up changes, the group has settled into a quintet rounded out by drummer Spencer Schoening, keyboardist Jaycelyn Brown, and bassist Nathan Shaw.
In late 2009, their sophomore, full-length album Islands Disappear was released on Hidden Pony Records. Produced by Howard Redekopp (Tegan and Sara, The New Pornographers, Mother Mother) and Tom Dobrzanski, the album is rich in vocal harmonies and often beautifully references the country they encounter so frequently on tour as in (“Emerald Lake, AB”) and (“Holly, Ontario”). The album would go on to spend 24 weeks on the ChartAttack’s weekly campus Top 50 chart and would see the band nominated for Artist of The Year at the 2009 XM / The Verge Music Awards. Lead single (“Camilo (The Magician)”), was dubbed the “song of the summer” by Grant Lawrence of CBC Radio 3 and would become one of the most played Canadian songs on Modern Rock Radio in 2010. Outside of Canada, the band has been name-checked by the likes of Perez Hilton and youaintnopicasso.com, as well as Tony Robbins and Steve Lamacq at BBC Radio 6.

From day one, the band has upheld an incredibly rigorous touring schedule, crossing Canada numerous times and landing high profile gigs at V-Fest, nationally televised Canada Day celebrations on Parliament Hill and also playing the Olympics when Vancouver hosted in 2010. Said the Whale have toured the country with Mother Mother, Plants and Animals, and Tokyo Police Club, just to name a few, and shared stages with the likes of City and Colour, Blue Rodeo, Hey Rosetta! and Hollerado. In late 2010, Said the Whale placed second in The Peak Performance Project, walking away with a $75,000 grant towards their future music endeavours.

In March of 2011, the band embarked on their first major tour of the United States, including several performances at the SXSW music festival in Austin, TX. On the fourth day of that tour, their van was broken into and they were robbed of over $8,000 in gear and personal belongings. This tour was also being captured by a CBC TV documentary film crew for what would become “Winning America” a film exploring the trials and tribulations of a band trying to break into America, airing this July. Amidst the US tour dates, the band flew into the Toronto-hosted JUNO Awards, where they won New Group Of The Year. The band promptly returned to the States to complete their tour, returning home just long enough to do laundry and repack before hitting the road again to tour across Canada. Said the Whale then took to the UK for a two-week tour highlighted by playing The Great Escape Festival this past May. This fall, the band has again been busy touring Canada with labelmates Rah Rah and Sarah Lowes and then the U.S. with We Are the City including a stop at CMJ Music marathon.

When We Were Young
Golden Girls

Hosannas was founded on the classic model of biological coincidence. When they both had taken an interest in music, brothers Brandon and Richard Laws quickly found that combining their previously disparate efforts was the only logical path to improve their craft. Though the music they made at that early stage was really not any good, they found almost immediately that it was much better than music made by some other people. The brothers eventually moved to Portland, OR and released their first record (Song Force Crystal, 2009) on Tender Loving Empire. Subsequently a second and third record have been released, Then and Now and Then and Together both available from Hush records. Hosannas are still in Portland, and aim to spend the winter writing and recording a new album.

Coming or Going
Get Gone
Save Me A Place

Following the release of their debut ep earlier this summer Los Angeles’ five-piece White
Arrows are set to make their British live debut and release their first single, ‘Get Gone’. It is a
groove-soaked, synth’-laden slice of what’s to come, on the band’s RAC produced debut album,
scheduled for release in 2012.

A fusion of heavyweight melodic hooks, hip hop drum samples and analogue synths – the White
Arrows sound is a potent brew cooked up by singer Mickey Church, Steven Vernet (bass)
Andrew Naeve (electronics), Mickey’s younger brother Henry Church (drums) and half-
brother, John Paul Caballero (guitar).

Church the elder is no stranger to the odd herbal infusion, born blind Mickey Church spent
his first years railing against his fate and through an extensive program of eye excercises and
superhuman determination regained his vision at the age of eleven. This transformation led to
a degree at NYU in Ritualistic Shamanism. Church’s obsession with the alternative drew him to
the booming NYC club scene : the cultural and philosophical blend was the prime ingredient in
the formation of White Arrows.

Church returned to his native LA and there together with the newly formed band, White Arrows
have spent the intervening time perfecting their art. A heavy weight touring schedule around
the States has meant the band have performed with Cults, White Denim, The Airborne Toxic
Event, and Portugal the Man among others

Their British live debut was late September and saw the band more gig-fit than ever. It is
bracketed by a mammoth Stateside touring schedule that sawshows with Those Darlins and
Weezer during August and then on the return from the UK, a 16 date run with Naked and
Famous throughout October.

White Arrows own “brilliant new” remix of Alexander Ebert’s (Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeroes) track Truth has just featured on NME.com
<div
