Jamie Lidell's second album, Multiply caught people off-guard in 2005. Few expected the restless sonic scientist to make an uplifting soul record, but he did; and audiences and critics were captivated by the fusion of his influences with deeply felt song writing, meticulous production skills, and most of all, that flipping amazing voice. According to the reviews, Jamie was at various times, Little Richard, Jimi, Otis, Sly, Prince, Marvin, Stevie or some mashed-up combo of them all. Meanwhile, his live show has become an infamously exhilarating experience, with Jamie performing on the edges of control and chaos, turning music inside out.

The show at Koko follows the release of new album ‘Jim' on the 28th of April. Jim will switch you on in the morning, move you on the dance-floor and take you down in the small hours. It's a bold, promiscuously diverse album, mixing up gospel grooves, sweetly sung and fiercely passionate soul, delicately moving ballads, thumping early R & B, synthed-up disco, and even a touch of ‘hillbilly funk'. "I haven't tried to hide the influences," he says "This is the music I love." But, listen closely and you can hear Jamie moving in new directions, creating a sound and style that is entirely his own.

Brighton's FUJIYA & MIYAGI remain situated somwhere between rock band and electronic dance act, and are perfecting a sound that is uniquely their own.

MICACHU is the moniker of major new talent, 21 year old songwriter and producer Mica Levi. She studies composition at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama in London . As well as writing more traditional pieces, she writes electronic pop songs, sometimes delivered acoustically. She has worked with a band of equally talented musicians ("The Cluster") made up of Miss Bienek, Taza, Yvette, Baker Trouble, Mayhem, Kit Downes, Ghostpoet and Kwes, but has recently unveiled her amazing new band ("the Shapes"), made up of Raisa Khan and Marc Pell.

The affable Catskills turn eleven and a half. This first double CD celebrates the landmark for the omni-present Brighton based label, which remain at the forefront of the UK’s independent music scene. We have 5 of the albums to give away, topped of with a rather fetching yellow Catskills frisbee!

Over the twenty-nine tracks we are entertained to a mix of fresh biscuits alongside classic highlights from their abundantly fruitful past. Hanging together like the sonic equivalent of a mini break in the sun.

Many will recognize gems from Husky Rescue, and Pepe Deluxe. Alongside the exclusives you’ll also be surprised just how many tunes have been in your summer soundtracks and favourite mix tapes.

Catskills Records was formed 1997 by a London / Brighton collective to release underground talent from their home turf. The label represents the best that both scenes has to offer, and has since spread it's wings to other parts of the UK with Bushy, Zero Theory, Sonorous Star, Nylon Rhythm Machine, Black Grass, Vibra and now to Europe and the rest of the world with the signings of Pepe Deluxé and Husky Rescue from Finland and back again with burst of UK Punk attitude from The Ripps!

Unlike other record labels there is no formula to their ethos. No particular style and no particular genre of music that represents Catskills. Their original mission statement remains the same as it was from day one - it's all about the Head Nod Factor (tm), if it's got it then they'll spin it 'til it breaks their necks.

Artists on the album reflect this ethos: with the sonic studio wizardry of Pepe Deluxé rubbing shoulders with the ruff and ready punk of The Ripps; The dancefloor killers of Bushy and the downbeat dreamscapes of Husky Rescue, Catskills is nothing if not diverse. And these tracks are corkers.

Having worked their music to picture for some of the biggest brands in the world from Levi and itunes, to TV shows like The Sopranos and Sex In The City. Over the two CDs it’s clear why creative types director have supported the label so avidly over the last decade. They are quintessentially independent and represent what you can do free from constraints and with artistic freedom at the core. Roll on the 2nd XI…

WIN SHELLEYAN ORPHAN'S FIRST NEW ALBUM IN 16 YEARS

So begins the story of Shelleyan Orphan. Their name, taken in homage to the poet Percy Bysshe Shelley is what brought Caroline Crawley and Jem Tayle together at first, forming the band in 1983 in Bournemouth, eventually signing to Rough Trade records in 1985. Now back with their first long player in almost 2 decades, and we have 5 copies to give away.

Combining their love of all musical genres the duo created an unusual blend of pop on their debut Helleborine, utilising a full range of classical instruments, including some obscure ones, like the Strumento da Porca and tamboura. Their influences were diverse as well, as anything from Joy Division to Sparks, Barry White and Delius ebbed and flowed through their ethereal and pulsating sound. Yet above all, Shellyan Orphan is a vocal band. This was illuminated with their next album, 1989s brilliant and critically acclaimed Century Flower, produced by Dave Allen (The Cure, Human League). Following the release, the band toured supporting The Cure throughout Europe and America gaining a wider fan base. The third album, 1992’s Humroot once again found the duo implementing their love of musical combinations. It found its way to their fanbase and enabled them to continue playing for a few years. After that, Caroline and Jem took a long break from the music industry, coming together occasionally but not as Shelleyan Orphan, until now.

So here is their first new recordings in seventeen years, a collection entitled We Have Everything We Need. They recorded the album at Riverside Studios in Bath with Steve Evans (Siouxsie, Robert Plant and the Proclaimers), while the strings and woodwinds were recorded in Budapest with the Hungarian National Radio Orchestra. The album blends a unique use of strings, woodwind and the unusual (a Hurdy Gurdy and Celeste, for example) with the rhythms of Boris Williams (The Cure) and Charlie Jones (Goldfrapp, Robert Plant).

In its short time the Hoxton Square Bar & Kitchen has showcased some of the most exciting names in British music and played host to some of the best international acts breaking through today, with artists such as Kate Nash, White Lies, Foals, The Hold Steady, The Teenagers, Tokyo Police Club, Metronomy and Vampire Weekend all making appearances early in their careers.

Turning on the heat in October and with less than three weeks to go, HSB&K kick things off on the 9th with Example’s lyrical tomfoolery and Dead Kids dancefloor-stomping beats on the 16th, both of which exemplify the breath of musical ambition and diversity of both London and the venue.

The biggest underground band around right now in the UK, Bromheads Jacket, have today announced an Autumn Tour in support of their sophomore album – ‘On The Brain’. This year’s stellar line-up of world class artists will bring the sound of summer to this unrivalled location for those amongst us who believe that going to a festival should not just be a bit like a holiday, it should really be a holiday. Beautiful beaches, suntanned surfers and magnificent music – it’s a winning combination. Gossip, The Go! Team, Santogold, Black Lips, Lightspeed Champion and Alphabeat are confirmed for the intimate two-day coastal get down, and we have a pair of tickets for one lucky reader to get their mits on!

Surfing is central to the festival and this year Surfstock will host the Festival Team Surf Challenge. The £10,000 prize purse (the largest in the UK) is set to attract the nation’s best surfers to Porthtowan beach.

This year’s festival also includes the first annual Surfstock H30 British Big Wave Awards in association with CARVE magazine. Surfstock ticket holders will vote for the Surfer of the Year and Photo of the Year and the UK Surfing Museum will be on-site alongside a giant outdoor cinema premiering some local surf films alongside international releases and surf film classics.

Food, Drink and much much more on offer to suit everyone

Other attractions include Silent Disco, the Comedy Tent, the themed Dressup on the Saturday (find out the theme online), plus plenty of global food stalls and bars. Press Play will be running the Cornish Cream tent showcasing the best of local music talent, and Music Evolution from Penzance also has their Groove Lounge to take you through to sunrise.

Surfstock goes global and looks after the planet

Surfstock aims to reduce its carbon footprint and impact on the local area by providing free shuttle buses to the beach and back all day as well as organising car-sharing. Precautions against bad weather have been taken with the main stages all under cover in beautifully dressed big tops.
