Celebrating and Anniversary and a Goodbye.

Dear NOLAlicious readers,

Today marks the one year anniversary of the collaborative project between friends that became known as NOLAlicious. Today is the 53rd consecutive weekly NOLAlicious newsletter (with 11 additional special issues scattered throughout). We've shared with you over 35 desktop wallpaper images of classic New Orleans sights (mostly taken by our own in-house professional photographer Taylor) and produced a 2011 calendar from many of these images. We've featured more than 265 activities to do or places to eat around New Orleans and provided information about over 135 full-time jobs based in New Orleans. We have sent over 1,000 tweets, shared over 500 photos, and have close to 1,400 friends on Facebook. We hope you know, without a shadow of a doubt, how much we have enjoyed sharing a sliver of life in New Orleans with you every week.

Today also marks the final weekly NOLAlicious. When NOLAlicious was created last year, we were new to living in New Orleans and looking to find a curated list of things to do outside of the traditional media sources. There wasn't anything like NOLAlicious (at least that we could find). Lending our skills, ideas and the little time we had to give, the concept for NOLAlicious was born. And what a year it was! The highlights are many including the Saints winning the Super Bowl, riding in Mardi Gras Krewes and bouncing through a muddy (and beautiful) JazzFest. It also included the election of a new mayor, the Gulf Coast oil spill and the 5-year anniversary of Hurricane Katrina. It included all of the magic that is New Orleans, from food and music and culture to sharing it with neighbors and new partners-in-crime along the way. 2010 was about making lifelong friends and memories that we will hold close to our hearts forever.

Throughout the year, the NOLAlicious family grew to include Elise, Kat, Martin and Emily, who each shaped NOLAlicious in their own way. Without them, we would have been lost.

Our lesson? Support those wacky ideas you hatch over coffee with friends. Use your passions to create something you can share with others. Be consistent. Share your passions and love. That's why, instead of our regular PICKS this week, we've each described what New Orleans means to us, our perfect New Orleans day, and what we're most looking forward to this upcoming year.

We like the idea of NOLAlicious having bookends, a beginning and an end. Of course, all of our past newsletters, featured picks and photos will stay online. On occasion, you might even hear from us when something comes up that is too good not to share. But now it's your turn. We featured the New Orleans we found and loved in 2010, but our love for New Orleans lives on, stronger and deeper because you showed NOLAlicious what you loved about New Orleans, and why it was so important to you. Thank you. Now get out there and show New Orleans that same love you showed us.

Celebrating NOLAlicious

Carl Nelson 2010 started out strong and brought with it some amazing changes and projects, NOLAlicious being one of the brightest ones. Hatched in The Orange Couch as an idea amongst friends, what it became is more than I envisioned and despite its end, like 2010's, the next year or project is fueled by this one. Nights out on Frenchman St. dancing at d.b.a. or enjoying a small plate at Three Muses, indulging in 50¢ oyster happy hour at Lüke or exploring local art at the Ogden Museum, and enjoying street festivals will happen again and again, year after year. It wouldn't be 2011 without 2010 and it wouldn't be the New Orleans I've grown to love so deeply without NOLAlicious.

Emily Jensen My perfect New Orleans day is almost definitely on a Sunday. It begins rolling out of bed and stepping into a pair of cowboy boots to walk up Spain Street with my best friends for breakfast at Cake Cafe, where we feast on healthy grits, garlicky wheat toast and chicory coffee. Next, we roll out to Mid City Yacht Club, snag an icy bucket of High Life, and scream along with the rest of the bar as the Saints dominate. Afterwards, we run into a rowdy second line in the Seventh Ward and shake it all the way through the Treme. We hit Euclid Records to get our vinyl fix, swing by Satsuma for fresh squeezed juice, and head back to our house to paint, play guitar and cook dinner to eat out in our backyard. Later, we meet up with more friends at The Country Club for whiskey on the rocks and a moonlight swim. We stay out too late, we laugh too loud, and we live too big, because this is New Orleans. And here, to me, every day is perfect.

Martin Strickland It has been an amazing year exploring all that New Orleans has to offer. I have been able to meet so many wonderful new people and I have found so many new ways to enjoy the city with friends and family. The main objective of NOLAlicious, to me, has been to always look forward to that next week, that new experience. New Orleans is truly a city that is in constant flux. We might have traditional festivals, but every year you find yourself excited about different ones for a myriad of reasons; friends that are new to the city, new friends that have lived here their entire lives, or sometimes you’re just in the mood to try something new. Sometimes you even realize that you still have not been witness to some of the New Orleans’ most steadfast traditions. This year I am looking forward to seeing how this ancient city continues to change and evolve before our eyes. I am excited to see what new shopping will open, which new eateries will capture our imaginations (and wallets) and which festivals (cause you can never have too many) will surprise and inspire me. Most of all I am excited to see how the general landscape of the city changes. Even without the help of NOLAlicious, I am quite sure that everyone will have an adventurous 2011, but thank you so much for allowing us to be a part of your 2010.

Sloane Berrent New Orleans is so full of perfect moments that my heart aches thinking about having to choose just a few. I remember the spring days when the temperature started to rise and the condensation gathered on the windows of my French Quarter apartment and I would open the french doors to hear the clopping of the horses, the sounds of the buskers and the smell of the garden flowers from surrounding courtyards. I remember everything. Bike rides through the Marigny exploring every block and every nook in wonder. Long walks around Audobon Park and deep debates over what snoball flavors to try next with friends. Dinners so delicious with company so divine that we didn't notice 4 hours had gone by. Laughing so hard at dive bars on hidden Uptown streets that my sides hurt. Life in New Orleans is turning up the dial on what it means to be alive. It's brighter, it's louder, it's more decadent and yet it can fill one with pure childlike joy at the possibilities and wonders that lie around every street corner. It's the definition of family, of generations coming together to celebrate culture and a place they love. From our family to yours, thank you for everything.

Taylor Davidson Thank you. Thank you for giving me this space to explore, love and share New Orleans with you. By supporting NOLAlicious, you spurred me to keep my eyes, ears and heart open to New Orleans; you helped me learn new habits, try new restaurants and dishes, love sazeracs and snoballs and crawfish boils, buy a tux, go to new festivals, follow the music, dive into for second lines, use the phrase "neutral ground" correctly, and wander the Marigny, Quarter, Bywater and Uptown with an open eye, a ready camera, and a spirit ready to dive into the next experience. I couldn't have done it without you. We couldn't have done it without you. You helped me create many perfect days in New Orleans. Here's to many, many more for all of us.

NOLAlicious #52, January 4 to 11, 2010

2011 is off to the races with bursts of cold weather, the Saints in the playoffs and less than two months until Festival Season begins for another great year in the Big Easy. As the year rolls around to the great refresh, many of us find it's the time where we all take stock, plan and prepare for what is to come. Here at NOLAlicious, we're taking stock of the year past and the year upcoming and making our own resolutions. Funny thing is no matter what we prepare for, this year will bring many surprises. If only I was a betting man.

Personally, I don't believe in New Year's resolutions. Why wait until a new year to do the things you've always wanted to do? Every day is an opportunity to make a change, to do the hard thing, to start a new pattern and be a better version of ourselves. If you didn't make resolutions this new year, or you've already broken yours, don't fret; the year is young. There's still plenty of time and opportunity to make new patterns.

But note: it's often said it takes 21 days to establish a new habit. Whether you believe in that or not, just remember that Mardi Gras is right around the corner and the gluttonous joy that it brings. Better start establishing those new habits now, so you can feel good about breaking them.

EAT  We’re so in love with local junk food legend Elizabeth’s - the dining room is packed to the perfect cozy fullness, and the food takes just long enough to get you drooling. Split their gooey, steaming stack of strawberry-stuffed french toast with a friend and slap a side of their infamous praline bacon on the side, and you’ve got yourself a brunch sent straight from above. Hefty carnivorous sandwiches and monstrous traditional southern plates are Elizabeth’s specialty, and their motto, “Real Food Done Real Good” is about all you need to know. 601 Gallier St. Closed Mondays.

GO  The New Year is upon on and you know what that means: time to start the carnival season. This Thursday is Twelfth Night, the traditional kick off of Mardi Gras season. There will be many parties around the city but one we recommend is the traditional The Phunny Phorty Phellows "The Heralds of Carnival". The costumed and masked krewe assembles at the Willow Street Car Barn at 6:30pm. At 7pm sharp, the Phellows board the streetcar and began their ride to "Herarld the Arrival of Carnival" down the St. Charles Ave. Streetcar Line. Free. Wear a costume and get in the Carnival Spirit!

DO  There is always a dance party in New Orleans to stumble upon, and one of our favorites is The Stooges brass band’s white-hot set every Thursday at the HiHo Lounge. Admission runs between the oh-so-affordable $2 to $5 during touristy days, but is always worth every penny. Their exuberant jams are butt-rocking perfection, particularly their ode to the Uptown and Downtown crews (“Where Ya From”), and tasty riffs on top 40 hits. 2239 Saint Claude Avenue. Shows starts at 9:30pm.

SEE  Laugh your way into 2011 and check out the Jefferson Performing Arts Society Presents - Meshuggah-NUNS! The Ecumenical Nunsense! This hilarious show opens January 7th and runs through the 23rd. From Sister Amnesia's attempt at magic to the sing-along Fiddlerspiel, this show is a boatload of comedy and fun! Friday and Saturday shows at 7:30pm. Sunday shows at 2pm. At the Teatro Wego! Theatre. Tickets $30.

GO  Nothing stirs up a Tuesday night like a lady in a drag, so ditch the ordinary and hit up the weekly drag king variety show presented by Carnival Kings at Bourbon Pub’s upstairs bar, Parade. The fabulous women strut, swagger and serenade you in their finest masculine get-ups, plus each night features great drink specials. LGBTQ friendly and open to all ready to celebrate gender-bending with a good old-fashioned variety show throw down. 801 Bourbon Street. Show starts at midnight.

LAGNIAPPE  New year, new you! If you’ve been thinking about taking up a new activity for your personal health, check out Freret Street Yoga. This new addition to the ever expanding Freret Neighborhood offers classes for all levels. It is owned and run by native Geoffrey Roniger, an extraordinary skillful and knowledgeable teacher, who has just returned home after teaching in the SF Bay Area for the past decade. NOLAlicious #50, December 21 to 27, 2010

If you're alive and you live in New Orleans, you've got a favorite bar, a favorite drink and a favorite bartender. If you REALLY live in New Orleans that number of favorites is probably more like two or five, and it includes a favorite for every occasion, holiday, parade and cast of visitors that one could possibly imagine. As New Orleanians, we love sharing favorites with our friends.

Although I'm not sitting sharing a drink right now (right now we're righting an introduction to this week's enewsletter), in the spirit of the holidays, here's what I would be drinking with you right now:

Sazerac: My first sazerac in New Orleans was at The Sazerac Bar in the Roosevelt Hotel. When I first moved to New Orleans, I had no idea how different the drink could be at different bars, so I began building up a list of how the sazeracs compared, and throughout my explorations in New Orleans, it's still my favorite. It might be the uncontroversial choice, but sometimes the easy choices are the right ones.

Pimm's Cup at Napoleon House, French 75 at French 75 Bar, and Old Fashioned at The Columns: Although these aren't New Orleans specialities, they are classic drinks made for the right moments: morning, afternoon and evening. Each drink has its own deep, rich history, and part of enjoying them is indulging yourself in visions of what it would be like to drink each of these drinks a hundred years ago.

A NOLA Blonde, anywhere (but I prefer The Avenue Pub). My go-to beer in New Orleans, available throughout the city. Drinks best on a bar stool shooting the breeze with a friend or 10.

Any whiskey or bourbon-based cocktail. So many bars, so many bartenders, so many drinks undiscovered. If it's based on whiskey or bourbon, I'm ready to try it.

EAT   Feelings Cafe is truly local in every way - their obscure, hole-in-the-wall location keeps their gorgeous dining room and garden courtyard tourist-free, so that those who can truly appreciate such New Orleans specialties as the mirliton and roasted corn salad, mushroom boudin, and fish Nicholas can indulge in peace. Vegetarians and meat-eaters alike can find spectacular dishes, from the roasted vegetable terrine to the orange-glazed duck with pecan rice. If this sounds like your kind of place, you’d best be heading to the Bywater to Markey’s Bar, a neighborhood favorite that boasts all the above, plus burgers and a juke box. Markey’s is a solid dive with decades of character under its belt, and the perfect unpretentious spot to grab a cold one with good friends. 640 Louisa St. Facebook

DO  Celebrate Christmas Harrah’s-style at Miracle on Fulton Street, an annual celebration established in 2007 to lift holiday spirits following Hurricane Katrina. Fulton Street, the pedestrian plaza adjacent to Harrah's Hotel between Lafayette and Poydras streets, will be all-out Christmas-palooza with thousands of twinkle lights, giant fleur de lis ornaments, faux snow, a 30-foot-tree, and a visit from Santa Claus. GO  We love our Saints! But we love our Hornets too! Never count out the Hornets for a fun time with friends and family. What do the holidays mean to you? We've been thinking about this here at NOLAlicious, and we know it's a lot about family and friends getting together and celebrating the year that was.

We've also started to think about the year ahead. What did we want to do this year that we didn't? Who did we want to see more of, but timing never quite worked out? For us, all too often we get caught up in the splendor of Orleans Parish, but we know there is much more to New Orleans (and Louisiana for that matter) farther afield. Some of our best days this year have been with friends at festivals, taking plantation tours or exploring small towns outside of New Orleans proper.

In our quest to create a "good life" it can be hard to find time for everything... until it occurred to us that we have to make time. With that in mind, what will you make time for next year? What do you want to do more of, or do differently, or who are the people you want to see more of? Write those down and work on making 2011 the best year yet. We know we will.

EAT  ‘Tis the season to stuff your face with sweets, and there’s no better place to indulge than Sucre, a Magazine Street shop that offers sugary treats from gelato to french macaroons to hand-crafted chocolates. Their store is a true holiday wonderland, with giant gingerbread men built from real cookies in the front window, and special seasonal delights everywhere! Their canned drinking chocolate with red and white marshmallows, as well as their Sugar and Spice chocolate collection (featuring gingerbread, candy cane and eggnog truffles) make amazing gifts for friends and family with a sweet tooth. 3025 Magazine Street. LAGNIAPPE  Get into the holiday spirit with a screening of The Nightmare Before Christmas at The Alamo Underground. As part of their Wednesday night movie series, this movie is free - or donation optional if you like. This space had been home over the past 30 years to jazz brunches, galleries, movie screenings and theater productions until 2008. We are thrilled it reopened this past Labor Day and if you haven't been to this New Orleans gem which actually resembles The Alamo, this is a perfect opportunity. 1547 Crete Street. It’s the holidays y’all! We were very excited (and not the least bit surprised) to see New Orleans nab the #2 spot in AOL.com’s “10 Best Places in the US to Get into the Holiday Spirit.” This doesn't happen overnight!

Did you know that 2010 marks the 25th anniversary of Christmas New Orleans Style, featuring events produced by our friends at French Quarter Festivals and sponsored by NOTMC? That's right a whole website dedicated to the wonder that is Christmas in New Orleans along with a free Christmas New Orleans Style Guide that you can order here. DO  Experience New Orleans’ unique architecture through DesCours, a free, public, ten-day architecture and art event running through this Sunday presented by the American Institute of Architects. GO  Get your crackly, warm-toned sonic fix at Euclid Records, a bright pink building in the Bywater that keeps the soul of good ol’ fashioned record shops alive and strong. With a classic vibe and a mind-blowing selection of 33s, 45s, CDs, posters, and more, Euclid is a haven for music lovers from Deadheads to Mahalia Jackson junkies. EAT  We’re a sucker for a good farmer’s market. Lately, we’ve been loving the Sankofa Farmers Market. This market happens every Saturday morning in the Lower 9th Ward, rain or shine. It’s a fantastic opportunity to mix and mingle with residents of the neighborhood, exchange some unique recipes and pick through delicious and fresh produce, seafood and baked goods. Plus their website features a recipe of the month (this month is Collard Greens Soup with Tamarind and Sweet Potato Dumplings). LAGNIAPPE  Art is a beautiful thing. Art with a cause is even better. This Saturday is a show called Entitled to Live: An Unfiltered View of New Orleans. It’s an Artfully AWARE event where photography, painting, literature and music contribute an unfiltered view of our New Orleans community. Artists of various disciplines express their unique perspectives on culture, societal challenges and personal experiences to inspire togetherness through our differences. Welcome to the Holidays
NOVEMBER RECAP

We don't know about you, but November came and went in a flash. Seems like only yesterday we were on Frenchmen Street during Halloween and dancing through the crowds at Voodoo and now the holiday season is upon us. It seemed like everyone from stores to certain friends of ours (you know who are are), were all too ready to pull out the Christmas music, turn up the volume and begin preparations for decorating the tree and drinking eggnog...or some other glorious concoction.

Last holiday season was pitch perfect. We bounced around hotel lobbies looking at holiday decorations, went caroling in Jackson Square (it's December 19th this year y'all - mark your calendars), but most of all got to spend quality time with friends new and old. Apart from the madness and gift-buying that gets so many down, we made a few of our holiday presents from scratch and made a point to do some of the fun things that make the New Orleans holiday season special, yes like the caroling, but also Christmas in the Oaks, Absinthe Friday, hunting down Mardi Gras Indians and above all, parading whenever possible.

It was almost one year ago today that I moved into my first Creole apartment in the Lower Garden District near Magazine and Felicity. Carl, after arriving in October for a dance competition had never really left (a Marigny resident through and through) and Taylor was on his way back mid-December to join us (Uptown as it turned out). We decided, as three people that had spent 2009 traveling the world, that the place we wanted to be, the place we wanted to rest our head, was New Orleans. New Orleans cultivates the artist inside each of us, the explorer, the adventurer, the nostalgia of days gone by, and was as anxious for our return as we were.

The rest, as they sometimes say, is history.

NOLAlicious was born from a desire to create something together that was an ongoing love letter to a city that had wedged and firmly implanted itself in our hearts. Three website redesigns later, one newsletter redesign, one Tumblr, three interns, advertisers and sponsors, happy hours and celebrations, we are proudly going stronger than ever. Facebook & Twitter continue to be a place where we talk with all of you about events going on around the Crescent City. Our T-shirts featuring the NOLAlicious logo, 2011 calendar and online store are ways you can show your support and we appreciate every little bit.

As we enter the holiday season, where we give thanks and share eggnog and white elephants with friends, let us just take a moment to give thanks to all of you. Your feedback, sharing events and advertising with us keeps this newsletter going and has created a truly memorable 2010.

SEE  Did you know that the Seventh Ward was traditionally home to a large number of Creoles of color? Learn all about the history of this seldom-celebrated neighborhood and gain a fresh appreciation for its rich culture through the lens of Owen F. Murphy, Jr. at the exhibit The Seventh Ward: People, Places and Tradition, part of the 5th annual PhotoNOLA festival (check the PhotoNOLA website for details on many more exhibits and events). The show will be held on second floor of the Williams Research Center and will feature photographs that document architecture, faces, and traditions from 1857 to present. EAT  A New Orleans favorite is opening a new location; Camellia Grill is expanding their omelet empire and opening a new place in the French Quarter. It’s the same awesome menu, only now you don’t have to travel all the way to Riverbend if you’re below Canal Street. Head over this weekend for their Grand Opening and become of the first to enjoy what is sure to become a FQ staple. This location unlike the original will include, shocker, alcohol. Opening scheduled for Friday. 540 Chartres Street.

DO  This is a great city to see Christmas decorations. One can cruise up and down St. Charles, but we recommend that you make a special trip to the Roosevelt Hotel. Their lobby takes the cake; mixed with the permanent decorations, The Roosevelt's Waldorf Wonderland Lobby is a must see for anyone looking for a holiday thrill. While you’re there you can stop in the Sazerac Bar for a cocktail and head over to Domenica for dinner. For a fun adventure go hotel lobby hopping throughout the French Quarter and the CBD. LAGNIAPPE  Take a stand against bullying. In the recent moths there has been a noticeable increase in teenage suicides due to bullying, In response, author Dan Savage created a viral campaign called It Gets Better that allows anyone to record a short video showing support for our youth. Come out this Saturday for the It Gets Better New Orleans Project to record your own video. Lots of local organizations have teamed up to host a get together. Dear New Orleans,

New Orleans greeted me from a summer vacation spent in NYC, DC and all places north-east with the intense feeling of being home. I shared moments, greetings and smiles with strangers passing by on the streets, and felt the comfort of sitting in familiar places and seeing familiar faces wash over me. After wandering for so long, being able to wander home is a refreshing change.

This will be my second Thanksgiving in New Orleans, but my first while calling it home. I can’t help but look forward to going to the the race track and sharing the inevitable deliciousness of a meal (and perhaps the rum egg nog or two) with friends.

What I find here in those shared moments passing me by, whether with friends, family or strangers, is what makes this home for me.

Dear friends,

Last week, I watched a local businessman try to talk a man visiting from Chicago into having one more martini.

“No thanks,” the out-of-towner tried to politely decline, “I can’t be out too late.”

The businessman scoffed, saying, “Down here, we stay out too late, eat too much, drink too much...this is just the way we live.”

The man has a point. New Orleans is nothing if not consistently over the top - it is a haven of everyday absurdities, where running into Kermit Ruffins driving a tiny three-wheeled car blasting gospel music in a Walgreen’s parking lot is what we call Sunday morning; where the most common cause of traffic is a second line parade; where bizarre getups are so commonplace that the word “costume” ceases to bear meaning. Some cities are windy, and some never sleep. New Orleans is a city of perpetual, unabashed oddity.

As we plunge into the insanity of the holiday season, from Thanksgiving to Christmas and all the way through New Years, don’t forget to take pause in the revelry to appreciate the special little quirks that give this city its peculiar charm - no matter how accustomed you may become to a steady stream of weird, embrace the weirdness with a sense of wonder. There’s nothing like it anywhere else.

GO  In a city packed to the gills with incredible, wacky dive bars, one of the greatest among them has to be Saturn Bar in the Bywater. The dusty wooden hole-in-the-wall, originally owned and operated by the late O’Neil Broyard, has become famous for its nutty pack-rat decor - think Aladdin’s Cave of Wonders, filled not with gold and jewels, but with faded old photographs, original artwork, an array of taxidermy, neon signs, and of course, a full bar. With its splendidly ancient architecture and sweeter-than-sugar bartenders, Saturn is a joy to drink at - when it’s open. Its hours tend to be erratic, but playing hard to get is the oldest trick in the book. We love you, Saturn Bar, you old tease. 3067 St. Claude Ave.

EAT  The real question upon reaching the front of the line at Cake Cafe & Bakery to order your brunch feast is not what do you want, but what don’t you want? Cake’s menu is ruthlessly on-point - from the mammoth omelets laden with fresh veggies and oozing with cheese, to the chubby, triumphant cupcakes in halos of thick frosting, to the legendary crab sandwich, a messy, saucy mouthful of seafood genius. It’s a perfect spot to kick back with friends for breakfast after a night out or a hefty snack after a morning bike ride. True to its namesake, cake also makes cakes to order and the King Cake menu is a whole other story - their apple and goat cheese rendition will make you weak in the knees. 2440 Chartres St. Tuesday through Sunday, 7:00am - 3:00pm.

SEE  Recently reopened on Labor Day, The Alamo Underground in Bayou St. John is now screening free movies every Wednesday and Sunday. The bizarre entertainment space, designed to imitate the architectural style of the Alamo, will host a live benefit show for Pakistan featuring the angsty melodies of Les Sages on Wednesday night from 8:00pm to 11:00pm, and this Sunday’s featured flick is cult classic SLC Punk. Doors open at 6:00pm for some schmoozing and boozing before each screening - a cool scene for the droves of New Orleans twenty-somethings looking to kick it with their buddies on the cheap. 1547 Crete St. #2.

GO  Fringe theater is a tradition that started in Edinburgh, Scotland in 1947 when eight performing groups were excluded from the mainstream annual arts festival and decided to perform anyways. Today, that same anything-goes spirit drives fringe festivals around the world - and the New Orleans Fringe Festival, sure to be one of the fringiest of them all, starts today. Performances will be held at venues all over the city, and with a week’s worth of “wild weird fresh original theater,” you’ll want to scope the lineup to make sure you don’t miss out on this freaky, funky, fantastical series of artistic experiments. November 17 - 21.

LAGNIAPPE  You’ve heard of speakeasy pizza, but now speakeasy bagels? Apparently craving New York staples is a punishable crime in the city of New Orleans, but if these bagels are wrong, we don’t want to be right. Laura Sugerman of Sugerman’s Bagels takes orders for her tasty dough rings by email, then sets up a time (usually on Wednesdays or Sundays) for you to retrieve your culinary contraband from her location in the Bywater. The bagels, still piping hot in their brown paper bag, are seriously addictive. Sugerman offers flavors like whole wheat rosemary, roasted garlic, pumpkin spice and satsuma, and is also open to offers for new flavors. She even delivers upon request. Bagels are $13 for a dozen, $8 for half a dozen.

Well, we finally ‘fell back’ an hour this past weekend. The fall months are certainly coming into play; it’s getting darker much sooner everyday and the weather has at last begun allowing us to wear jackets. This part is a bit painful for some of you to hear. It’s New Orleans; we tend to forget that we will indeed need jackets for some portion of the year. It’s funny the way that can seem unnatural to some of us here, even the ones who grew up in the North.

But, yes, the cool weather is upon us. The air has a different smell and the shops around town have begun to get ready for the Christmas season. It may to be too soon for some of you, but we are sure a good number of you are itching with the excitement for the holiday season that is now upon us.

The Saints won this past weekend, we all gained an extra hour of sleep and those of us lucky enough to have a fireplace got to use it. It’s a great time to be in NOLA, plain and simple.

The reason we like to ruminate on the seasons and time of the year is that it helps us gain perspective on the city and to realize that we have been producing NOLAlicious for almost an entire year now!

Thanks to everyone who has supported us. We hope we can be there for you guys in every season through every holiday and every time zone change.

DO  Next time the daily grind in the city starts to get to you, escape into the wild with a guided bayou canoe tour at Jean Lafitte National Historic Park and Preserve. The tours, which are free by appointment on Sundays (reserve a canoe for every two people), are no gimmick - this is a chance to get up-close and personal with the gorgeous wildlife and nature of Southern Louisiana. The guides provide plenty of educational information about the history of the bayou, and help you to visualize a time when the French Quarter was filled with birds, fish and alligators instead of tourists. GO  Every Monday night, crusty kids and wizened bluegrass junkies alike descend upon the Hi Ho Lounge for not only for the $1 red beans and rice, but also for a massive jam session with guitars, banjos, mandolins and a chorus of voices that comprise the weekly Bluegrass Night. Anyone is welcome to jump into the jumbled circle of chairs and situate yourself in the dark-red depths of the beloved drinking den. So if you’ve been secretly harboring mad bluegrass skills, come on down and become a part of the noise - it’s a great chance to meet other musicians, and for those less musically inclined, an amazing show to witness. 2239 Saint Claude Avenue. SEE  Elysian Fleas Marigny Market returns this Sunday the 14th with its usual bounty of local fresh food and produce, along with flowers, plants, hand-crafted creations and vintage fashion. The one-day-only event will also feature live entertainment and a variety of only-in-New-Orleans attractions, making this market the definition of funky-fresh shopping - definitely don’t want to miss this one! Held in the courtyard next to Michalopoulos Studio at 527 Elysian Fields on the corner of Chartres St. 11:00am-4:00pm.

EAT  “Trust me,” murmured the man behind the counter as he extended a wooden spoon full of gooey Chocolate Amaretto Cheesecake ice cream. “Just taste it.” Trust him we do, just as we trust every frosty tub of frozen goodness on display at Creole Creamery. While many of you enjoyed Voodoo this past Saturday, or getting ready for Halloween, I spent the day biking around the Marigny, the Quarter and Uptown, wandering through the streets on a beautiful fall day, letting my sweet tooth guide the way. I headed straight to Meltdown Popsicles, then debated stopping at Creole Creamery or Sucre, thought about Little Vic's, toyed with the idea of biking to Brocato's, but lucked into finding Hansen's on the last day of the sno-ball season. I considered trying something from their amazing Halloween menu, but decided a cream of nectar and cream of almond combination would be the best way to end the season, a "classic" according to the man in front of me.

Small parts of my perfect NOLA day.

In last week's newsletter, we asked you to email us your perfect New Orleans day, and we said we'd feature the top entries. We'll start by sharing Morgan Packard's:

"My perfect New Orleans day would begin waking up to the sounds of my Irish Channel neighborhood greeting the sun (from dogs to children to calls from one friend to the other across short fences to the scrape of trash cans along the sidewalk). A leisurely bath, with bubbles, while listening to Heavy D on WWOZ. Then, finding the perfect parking space with no meter, my fiancé and I would grab beignets and café au lait to-go from Café du Monde (Where else?). The afternoon would be spent strolling the streets of the French Quarter – visiting galleries, ducking into antiques, sneezing over dusty records – with at least one break for mimosas at The Court of Two Sisters. That would be followed by a relaxing meal with people-watching included, maybe at Irene's. Then the music (there has to be music), which means moving the car to below Frenchmen and wandering that magical street until the siren call of one club or another draw us in to get lost in the sounds (and a few drinks). We would emerge as the street quiets, but just before dawn, and drive home laughing and comparing notes on the music, what we saw and the people we met. Then it would be time to crawl into bed just as our neighborhood wakes and greets the new day."

GO  We know there are some of you out there that cannot be bother until you've had your morning cup of coffee. Man do we have the place for you to be! It’s the 2nd Annual New Orleans Coffee Festival! As part of the Feret Street Market, this interesting fest is just right for those caffeine connoisseurs out there. Over 100 vendors will be on hand for those who love to celebrate, learn about and most importantly, drink coffee! Saturday, November 6th. 12:00pm-5:00pm. Feret Market.

SEE  We are sure that many of you enjoyed the awesome art and artists that were part of Prospect 1 New Orleans. Well, this Saturday Prospect 1.5 New Orleans kicks off a hole new round of new art and instillations, music food and fun. Head down to the Julia Street Galleries for the kickoff party at the Le Mieux Gallery. If you can’t make this one, don’t fret: there will be plenty more show to see over the next few months. 6:00pm-9:00pm. 332 Julia Street.

GO  Word nerds rejoice! The New Orleans Book Fair fast approaches, starting with a kickoff party at Sound Cafe on Friday night. A veritable bookworm-palooza, the evening will feature live readings by Sarah K. Inman from her novel The Least Resistance, set in post-Katrina Uptown, and Jordan Flaherty, author of the radical activism tell-all Floodlines: Community and Resistance from Katrina to the Jena 6. And as if that weren’t delightful enough, the always-scrumptious Cake Cafe and Bakery will provide refreshments. Be there and be square! Friday, November 5th. 6:00pm. FREE. 2700 Chartres Street.

LAGNIAPPE  Katrina & Beyond - Much has been said, written, sung, painted, and performed to express the impact Hurricane Katrina has had on New Orleans, but no project has been quite as comprehensive and, most of all, interactive, as the Living with Hurricanes: Katrina and Beyond exhibit at the Presbytere on Jackson Square. The 6,700 square-foot multimedia spectacular opened last week through the Louisiana State Museum, aspiring to be “the world's definitive hurricane exhibition.” The exhibit fuses the personal, the political, the scientific and the artistic in a series of immersive environments and installations in an attempt to give the visitor an in-depth understanding of Katrina on both a local and national level. The interactive component is extended into cyberspace as the Museum invites those with stories, videos and photos relating to Katrina to share them on their Facebook page. We know they can be corny sometimes, but it’s such a tradition and one that certainly can’t be passed up here in New Orleans. Round-up a group of friends and head down to Mortuary, one of the oldest haunted house in the city. Get scared. Scream. SEE  Opera season just opened and for longtime enthusiast and newcomers there is Opera on Tap. Join the New Orleans Opera in the fourth season of bringing you the finest young local and regional singers in casual, 90-minute concerts of opera. EAT  Cheekily-named for the copious amounts of water it took in during Katrina, the Mid-City Yacht Club does not want for a sense of humor nor for delightful, garden-fresh cocktails. The superb bloody mary comes with home-pickled green beans from one bartender’s backyard, and their peppery take on a mojito pops with cucumber-infused gin. Join them for their Saints game potlucks on Sundays, where whoever bring the favorite dish receives $20 worth of complimentary bar tab, and the less popular cooks console themselves with a bucket of six beers for just $10. The Yacht Club is a kickback joint where you can drink on the cheap but feel like you’re treating yourself. 440 S. St. Patrick. EAT  Picture this masterpiece: a gooey, melty cheese quesadilla loaded with juicy grilled shrimp, applewood smoked bacon, and sweet, spicy pineapple salsa. Drooling? Then get your yearning taste buds over to Juan’s Flying Burrito Creole Taqueria, where the aforementioned Luau Quesadilla and a ton of other messy, mouthwatering inventions await you. Juan’s is the perfect fusion of fresh mexican flavor and New Orleans quirk, serving up fun creations like Mardi Gras Indians tacos, Gutter Punk burritos, and The Lowrider margarita. EAT  As a rule, any establishment offering two full bars, a pool table, live music, and dancing, will inevitably provide a menu of greasy, gutbombing disgraces that cannot be stomached sans gratuitous inebriation. Mimi’s in the Marigny doesn’t play by those rules - follow the narrow staircase to the second floor of this spectacularly dingy watering hole to find its cozy dining space, which on any given night could be featuring acoustic singer-songwriters on the mic, locals dancing lindy hop to a traditional jazz band, or a rump-shaking funk set from DJ Soul Sister. Dear New Orleans,

We had friends come to New Orleans this past weekend and it was their first time! We hardly knew where to begin with recommendations for where to stay, where to eat, where to explore and where to shop. Last night over drinks at The Columns Hotel, before dinner at Upperline and live jazz on Frenchman, we talked and talked about New Orleans and all it has to offer. The good and the bad. The ups and the downs. One of their favorite observations was about how words are pronounced. This isn't new to us, but for NOLA transplants, do you remember the first time someone gawked at you for saying "Chartres" or "Carondelet?" Every street we drove down they would comment, "Wow, look at that beautiful garden" and "There sure are a lot of potholes here" and of course "Has the city recovered from Katrina and the oil spill?" Patiently, we answered their questions and let the looks of astonishment and wonder cross over their faces and lead to the next round of observations and questions...

"Can I wear this black and gold boa to dinner?"

"What are the special New Orleans cocktails?"

"Beads are even in the very tops of the trees, how did they get there?"

"Everyone seems to know everyone here. It's like a small town feel within a city."

For the intellectually curious and adventurous spirits, New Orleans is a series of never-ending questions. More often than not, the questions and the conversations they lead to are better than any straight forward answer could ever be. That said, the debate between "cajun" and "creole" was fairly intense. If you could help us answer that, a sazarac is on us!

SEE  Miss Sophie Lee is one of those Frenchmen Street gems that tourists would thank their lucky stars to stumble upon, and who locals adore for her syrup-smooth crooning. The Chicago native migrated to New Orleans in 2001 armed with a killer set of vocal chords and a hunger for the city’s exceptional music scene. She has since released an album with members of the Jazz Vipers and holds a regular set at the Spotted Cat (not to mention a special place in our hearts). Get a taste of her lovely, understated standards this Thursday at 6:00PM - 10:00PM. 623 Frenchmen Street. FREE.

EAT  Any restaurant that gives back to up and coming chefs is cool in our book. Recently, The Emeril Lagasse Foundation and NOCCA partnered with three kids from their culinary arts program to create original dishes inspired by Louisiana cuisine. We were on board for the judging and can say without a doubt you are going to be in for a treat! All three dishes will be featured in every Emeril's restaurants around the country during the entire month of October. The Emeril Foundation also donated a $100,000 grant to NOCCA to finalize their culinary arts program. Please support these local kids by eating at any Emeril restaurant helping develop NOLA’s next great chef!

DO  It doesn't matter if you've lived here your entire life or just a few months, you can always find out something new about NOLA every time you leave the house! Sign up for DAT NOLA RACE 2010 and use your wit to solve clues, your charm to get help from the locals, and your speed to overcome your competition and conquer the course in the least amount of time. After being briefed, teams of two or more will receive the first of a series of challenging clues leading them to the next location/activity. LAGNIAPPE  John Thompson and Norris Henderson were innocent all along, but the broken criminal justice system of Louisiana landed them behind bars for a collective 45 years. Last week, we welcomed the newest team member, Emily Jensen to the team and her introduction is tough to follow! Her passion for all that New Orleans has to offer and her deep desire to make New Orleans home got us talking. We were looking at the NOLAlicious index remarking on all of the amazing events, gatherings, festivals and more we've covered this year. Just to take a quick glance, we thought it would be interesting to take a single letter in the alphabet - and we chose 'R' for no particular reason - but in looking at all we've covered this year in one single letter it shows not only all that New Orleans has to offer, but that which creates community and creates opportunity for people to mix together in this social gumbo that has all become part of who we are.

DO  Practice pitch presentation skills for your ideas for social change while competing to win $5,000 at PitchNOLA 2010! The “elevator pitch” competition is open to any and all social entrepreneurs in the greater New Orleans community with concepts for ventures that will effect positive change in our city. Participants will have the opportunity to present their ideas in front of a live audience of 200+ accomplished business professionals, social entrepreneurs, and activists – a great chance to work on public speaking  and make connections with the community of innovators in New Orleans. The 500-word proposal is due October 15^th by 11:59pm, and the event itself will be held on November 17^th.

EAT  This weekend, tie on your rib bib and two-step over to Lafayette Square for the 5th Annual Crescent City Blues and BBQ Festival. Just like festivals past, the event will bring together great local music, handmade crafts and drool-worthy Southern BBQ - including fare from NOLAlicious favorite The Joint - but unlike previous years, the Jazz and Heritage Foundation has added an oral history stage where many of the performers will be interviewed about their lives, influences, and music - a huge treat for blues junkies and anyone interested in a musician's perspective on American history. LAGNIAPPE  Searching for a little camp this Halloween? This is the last week for Scream Queens: The Musical, a hilarious journey through six Horror Movie Biz actresses’ careers as celebrity hopefuls and cult sex symbols in this interactive show. NOLAlicious #39, October 5 to 11, 2010

Dear Friends,

As I was walking home from the Quarter on Burgundy yesterday, gawking at the vibrant patchwork of beautiful old shotguns along each block and listening to music and voices drift out front doors into the sweet October air, it hit me: I’m living my dream. New Orleans is the incarnation of wishes I’ve been whispering to myself since I was a strange little girl obsessed with old bands, abstract art and radical activism, longing for a bastion of weirdness and wonder, where the music is always playing and the time is always right for a celebration. Since arriving a month ago, I have felt so happy and so alive, met so many new people from so many places, and had such unbelievable adventures that I am convinced are only possible in the magical, mystical city of New Orleans.

When I first came here in 2007 to assist in the continuing post-Katrina recovery, the last thing I thought I would find was the kind of utopia I just described. But it is directly through my experience with some of the city’s deepest wounds, from mucking and gutting homes to doing case work at a women’s shelter to working with political prisoners like the Angola 3, that I have come to respect and admire New Orleans for its soul, its strength and its sense of humor in the face of struggle. New Orleans is not a city that you come into; it is a city that comes into you. Its spirit is now a part of my spirit, and I know that it’s changed me for the better.

With that spirit always in my heart, I am ecstatic to be a part of NOLAlicious, a truly positive force that captures the essence of what’s good in New Orleans. I hope that receiving this newsletter in your inbox each week helps keep you hungry for living life in this incredible city to the fullest, whether you’re a New Orleans native or a wide-eyed transplant like me.

DO  Halloween in New Orleans is fast approaching. Get in the mood with the Historic New Orleans Collection tour “Historic Haunts: The Myths and Legends of the Vieux Carré” throughout the month of October. GO  Join us in this adventure outside of Orleans Parish! Head north to Natchitoches for the 56th Annual Fall Pilgrimage/Candlelight Tour. Experience the charm of Louisiana's original French colony by touring some of the most famous plantations including the Rusca House and Scott Corner House. Guests may visit the homes in any sequence, but make the Steel Magnolia House your last stop for wine, cheese and music. Tours Friday, October 8th from 7:00 PM - 9:30 PM. EAT  We're superfans of the cozy, colorful Lebanon’s Cafe which serves up some of the freshest Lebanese food in the city. Lebanon’s is our #1 Middle Eastern restaurant pick in New Orleans, and with good reason - from the warm, soft pita bread and bottomless Lebanese iced tea that kicks off the meal to the bright, crisp tabouli and juicy chicken shawarma, the scrumptious and authentic cuisine here is high quality and generously portioned with a kind pricetag to boot. SEE  Fashion in New Orleans can range from just-woke-up nonchalance to over-the-top insanity. See it all at the I Heart Southern Style, an evening of art, fashion and music that celebrates New Orleans style and culture and the relaunch of two of our favorite local blogs, I Heart NOLA and Slow Southern Style. Vendors will be selling locally-made apparel and there is a range of live performances headlining with The Breton Sound. Held at The Factory (next to The Maple Leaf). Admission $5 in advance, $10 at the door. 8:00 PM - 11:30 PM.

DO  Get ready for a pub-crawl like you've never seen. Teams of 2 to 5 people will have to make their way through a French Quarter Pub Crawl and answer questions and complete challenges based on HIV prevention information for the first ever GAY-Mazing Race: A Pub Crawl with a Twist. Prize baskets include Halloween party passes, bar and restaurant gift cards and a few things for use in the boudoir. Rockefeller Tulane Urban Innovation Challenge

Calling all aspiring social innovators! The Rockefeller Foundation and Tulane University's Urban Innovation Challenge invites people of all ages, backgrounds, experience levels and geographic locations working in urban revitalization, health, public education and economic development to come up with a solution to a systemic problem in New Orleans. You provide the plan, and in turn, they provide the funding to turn your idea into a sustainable and successful business. Four winners will each receive a $45,000 stipend to spend the year living and working in the learning labratory that is New Orleans. Along the way, you'll receive mentors and support from Tulane University, including an office and access to the college's resources. After the program is complete, your business can continue to grow and be poised to join incubators like Ashoka or Echoing Green.

Now, about the plan itself: the point is to think big. Beyond just revitalizing a specific program, the strongest applicants will offer radical, original ways to create change citywide. For example, Tulane Community Health Center's evolution since Katrina demonstrates a process of creating new, more efficient ways to deliver healthcare to New Orleanians, such as mobile medical units and neighborhood-based healthcare centers. The goal is to come up with an approach that is so effective in an urban environment that it creates positive change across the city.

Initial applications, which center around a 3-page proposal for your year-long program, will be accepted until December 1st, 2010. Applicants do not need to be living in New Orleans currently. 2011 NOLALICIOUS CALENDAR

As we welcome in October, we wanted to take a moment to reflect on an incredible September. We saw record numbers of growth for NOLAlicious, we frequented favorite haunts and found great new places to explore, eat and tap our feet to around New Orleans. We celebrated life, and all its moments, weekly with you here and also on Facebook and Twitter. One of the biggest surges in September were the amount of people downloading our desktop wallpapers (also for the iPhone and iPad). We think that's awesome! Part of the fun of NOLALicious for us is seeing what people click on every week and what interests them, which we then work to incorporate more of in upcoming weeks.

That is why, with great pleasure, we'd like to make an announcement. We've created, for your enjoyment (and for holiday gift-giving) the 2011 NOLAlicious calendar. NOLAlicious #38, September 28 to October 4, 2010

Dear Friends,

According to the calendar, last Wednesday was the first official day of fall. Being New Orleans, this meant nothing in terms of the heat index, but I always find myself so excited about the beginning of fall. Sure, the leaves don’t change colors here that much and a crisp fall evening is still more than a few weeks away but one thing is for certain... Halloween is right around the corner! If you are like me, this means every conversation from here on out will include plans for costuming and how to make it the best it can be.

Looking ahead to the next party, costume gala, festival, or live music show is something that makes us all very New Orleans. I am a fan of ruminating on my upcoming Halloween character choice and spend a few weeks roaming through the shops on Decatur and Magazine to see what pops – that’s really half the fun. There is no reason to purchase anything online; all that you want and way more can be found in our fantastic costume shops. From bright green wigs, to zombie paint, masks, sailors uniforms and tutu’s, it can all be put together with a few shopping trips.

Any excuse to add to the costume closet is a good one, right? Happy costume planning, everyone! Be sure to drop us any hints on great places to get fun accessories and let us know what you are planning on being this year.

NOLAlicious Picks

EAT  Sometimes you might want some Thai food and the person you’re with is craving breakfast food. What to do, what to do? Give Chill Out Café a try. This is some seriously delicious Thai food that is always fresh and kinder on your wallet than some other establishments in town. Their breakfast food is tops, so there is something for everyone on the menu. The staff is always polite and service is quick. Open Monday-Saturday, 10am-9pm. Average entrée price $10. 729 Burdette St.

GO  We all love to dance, but the real talent in the group is one of our co-founders, Carl. Last year he came to New Orleans to compete in the New Orleans Swing Dance Festival and The Ultimate Lindy Hop Showdown and fell in love with the city. Obviously, we have to recommend this action packed four-day fest of traditional jazz and swing dancing. Dance classes for all ages and levels will be available, as well as music from local NOLA favorites, afterhour’s dances, a Second Line Parade and an opening ceremony in Congo Square. Check the website for various ticket prices and event details. Saturday-Monday (Oct. 2nd-4th).

DO  Art for Art’s Sake is one of New Orleans premier annual arts event and it’s this weekend! This street party will feature a number of gallery openings, and most shops on the street will be open with special hours, and great promotions for the occasion. This year the fun moves to Magazine Street from Julia Street. Change is good, right? We like this idea and feel that it will be more conducive for you guys to move around and to find parking! Saturday, October 2nd. 5-9pm. Food and dink available for purchase at various vending sites. Magazine Street.

GO  There’s nothing like a nice hot cup of - southern wedding cake?! At PJ’s Coffee, strange and wonderful local flavors like Bananas Foster and Southern Pecan are roasted right into the coffee beans. If you like your caffeine jolt sweet and decadent, or brimming with Saints pride (PJ’s sells a Black and Gold Blend, as well as a Tiger Blend for LSU fans), this New Orleans favorite is a must. Locations all over the city.

LAGNIAPPE  Images Without Borders, a project founded by New Orleans-based photographer Laura Bergerol and Boise-based photographer Stacy Ericson in the wake of the earthquake in Haiti, has collected over 700 photos from 170 professional photographers around the world to sell for the benefit of Doctors Without Borders. This Saturday, October 2nd, IWOB will be hosting its premiere show right here at Art for Art’s Sake. Prices for prints range from $75 to $500, cocktails will be served and Daniels Catering will donate food. Shop of the Two Sisters, 1800 Magazine Street, 6-9pm.
