@ Steve,

Find out what kind of connection is there in Lawaan using Smart .. GSM .. 3G .. and buy your friend a signal amplifier / repeater with an outside and inside antenna. Search on ebay.ph for this item and you will notice an almost unbelievable immediate improvement not only in the quality of internet speeds and connectivity, but if you call your friend on their mobile phone the call quality is amazing.

Regards,

Hi,
I have found this very informative and for that reason I have decided to share my experience with Globe and Smart internet connections for Lawaan Samar.

I recently visited Lawaan Samar and stayed there for approx two weeks over the month of April, sharing the remainder of the month several days at a time in Tacloban.

While there I had two laptops 1) Toshiba Satellite L745 - 15" with WiFi and 2) a Samsung RF 711 - 17.3" with WiFi. I had Globe Tattoo post-paid USB stick and an unlocked Australian (Vodafone) Pocket WiFi with a Smart Sim card in it (SmartBro?). I rarely could get a Globe Tattoo connection on either laptop and not always a SmartBro connection on the Toshiba but could almost always get a SmartBro connection on the more powerful Samsung RF711 laptop.

I returned to Australia and left the Samsung RF711 laptop with my friend in Lawaan and took the Toshiba with me.

At this stage the connection has been good enough to chat (with slow transmission of msges tho on Yahoo Messenger) not been good enough to support a video call but good enough to allow one webcam to be open although which further slows down the msge transmissions.

My question here is does anyone know of any other ways to improve internet communication between Australia and Lawaan in Eastern Samar?

Is Skype or Facebook chat/video call facilities less demanding on signal strength than say Yahoo Messenger?

And another question. Is 3G available in Lawaan (I cant recall what was displayed on my Pocket WiFi display screen) for the use of a mobile phone to take advantage of Viber free txt msges and calls?

Pheww hope all that makes sense and many thanks if someone has some advice.
Steve

Hi <strong>Stephen</strong>, to be honest, if you are any other nationality than Filipino, 5.600 Pesos/month would be almost impossible. The reason is simple: visa costs. Although following the newest rules you will get the first 4 weeks free, every monthly extension would cost you between 2-3.5K Pesos alone. There is almost nothing left for food, housing, transport. The country flag says you might be from Ireland, but even with the famous Irish frugality, it would be an almost impossible way to live a decent life.

If you consider, that on a local average salary (i.e. in a department store, employees earn anything between 100-300 Pesos a day), even Filipinos struggle to make ends meet, if they don't stay for free with their parents, it would be pretty hard for you as a foreigner to even get by. For a reasonable existence for any frugal foreigner in the Philippines, I would estimate your budget to be at least 12-15K Pesos/month, if not more.

A girlfriend would only help in that regard, that she might be able to cook for you with lower costs than eating out, but still you would have to provide a living for her as well, basically doubling your costs for transport, medical, etc. I wouldn't consider that as an option to lower my overall expenses, which girl would stay long enough with anyone living a life like this? ;)

P.S. I edited your comment and added the additional information you provided via e-mail to reflect a better picture of your question.

Is it possible to retire in the philipines on 5,600 PHP per month ? With a reasonable standard. Living in the counrtyside near a beach ?? :D
I am thinking of retiring in the Philipines on 100 euro per month. That’s 5,600 Php. Do you think that’s possible ? Looking at the spread sheet I see that a rented room and food is just about all I could afford per month. Do you think that its sutainable or would I be struggling at every corner ?
I don’t want to live in the cities, more like the countryside near a beach. Simple living.
Also the question of immigration. The cost and how long the stay. I see that there is new legistration for up to 2 years. Do you know what that entails and the conditions envolved ?
I realize having a girlfriend there makes life easier and 2,3,4 or 9 hundred euro would be ideal. But 100 euro is on the cards for the moment. Perhaps in a year it may change.
Regards,
Stephen..

I had this bookmarked in one of my old notes. It's amazing to see how much house prices in most places in the world have dropped since you said they were overvalued in 2007.
I live and rent in Canada, where the cult of home ownership is still going strong in 2012. To date, we haven't seen the nasty drop in home prices (though there are some serious warning signs about an imminent drop).
Thanks for sharing, Sunny!

the Malaysian stereotypes are almost so true, well not all of them but that's how "stereotypes" are and I cant help myself from laughing :))
I must say, that your writing is quite good =D>
However, there are a little bit of differences between the West and East of Malaysia (I'm from the east actually). I assume you may be taking your observations from the West M, forgive me if I'm wrong.. But nevertheless, whether its West or East, all of us have quite a common..(well,what can I say? we're Malaysians) ;-)
