Here is the trouble with 8GB RAM on a Mac. First up, it simply isn’t enough for heavy browsing and messaging needs. 30+ tabs with Gmail / Drive along with standard video calling, WhatsApp, Slack and Telegram is often enough to show the chink in the armour of the Macbook Air. In fact the Memory Pressure below is from the MacBook Pro (M1 Pro chip) with 16GB RAM and the pressure is already in yellow.

All I have done in addition to above is attached a 24″ 2K monitor to my M1 Pro, which is much superior to the base model Air. My experience with 8GB Macbook Air was unusable. I cycled through different browsers, from Safari to Brave and the result remained the same. I tried suspending tabs and formatting the machine, only to give into the physics of low RAM.

A colleague who manages Facebook and Google ads for various clients and similar heavy browsing / messaging use had the same experience on the M1 Air. Just like me, he upgraded to the M1 Pro out of compulsion. A much bulky, heavier machine whose CPU/GPU powers we will probably never fully use.

The Apple math

Much of the 8GB base model from Apple boils down to money. Not the upfront cost of the machine but Apple’s need to charge $200 or INR 20,000 extra for additional 8GB RAM. Most off the shelf 16GB laptop RAM by itself costs around INR 4,000 in India, an upgrade over 8GB should cost even less, but that’s a luxury for user upgradeable machines. To be clear, I do not have a problem with Apple going with a integrated solution, but cannot help pointing that they are charging a steep premium for the upgrade.

At the time when I upgraded my machine a M1 Air with 16GB RAM and 512GB storage was close to the M1 Pro with all its on going discounts in terms of price. It made sense to not gamble with the Air and pick up the bulky machine with extra ports and a SD card slot.

The kryptonite – external monitor

The Macbook Air’s kryptonite is an external monitor. Yes, the M1 Air and the new M3 Air supports external monitors. But if you really use one and by any accident if it is a 4K, you are toast. I have extracted a better performance from a Celeron Windows desktop (with 16GB RAM and good GPU) compared to a stock M1 Air.

While the spec sheets tout external display compatibility for the Macbook Air lineup, the base model is just not up to the mark if you really use them with external displays. I suspect this may be the RAM limitation more than CPU/GPU powers.

The reviewers have failed us

The reviewers have failed us when it comes to reviewing these machines. Which is what prompts me to write this post after over a decade of hiatus.

First up, reviewers do not use the Air as their daily driver. They likely use the top of the line Macbook Pros. It is hard for many of them to empathise with a so called non pro user. I often hear the term “pro user” thrown around by these reviewers as if RAW photo editing, using good external monitors and 4K video editing is a thing regular consumers won’t occasionally do.

But these biases, aside, the review units handed out by Apple are the 16GB RAM variant. The Verge and MKBHD, both tested the 16GB variants for the M2 Macbook Air 15″ variants. In fact, I can see that The Verge had the 16GB RAM version for the M1 Air launch in 2020.

Clearly, even Apple does not want reviewers to experience the 8GB version. To make matters worse, the 16GB variant isn’t available on store shelves; it must be custom built!

Slower SSD and the move to unified RAM

Typically when one reads the spec for a computer, the GPU comes with its own memory in addition the the RAM installed on the machine. However with the M series, Apple moved to unified memory that shares the same RAM for CPU and GPU tasks. I am no chip nerd, but surely there are technical benefits to this. But the overall memory available on the machine has in fact dropped since the Intel generations because of this change. Yes there is something called swap which uses the storage space as RAM, but as you can see in the screenshot above, memory pressure comes into play.

Adding to this handicap, the M2 series had slower SSDs than the M1 Air. Slower by as much as 50% as tested by The Verge. The M3 might have similar SSDs, things in this department aren’t speeding up I fear.

Future-proofing, longevity and expectations!

The good old Intel Macbook Air machines have lasted well over 7 years for many. Macs are known to last long. Many used it for a decade and were happy with it. These 8GB machines aren’t the same. I am not sure these machines can continue to work well in the future with RAM that cannot be upgraded. If you have a 8GB Macbook Air, you live with that forever. The Mac’s display, the processor and the OS are great. But with such little RAM support, you are likely to find yourself frustrated with the performance sooner or later.

Apple carefully thinks through its constraints. Be it the 64GB base storage until iPhone 13, the 5GB iCloud storage limit or the 5w charing adapter it shipped with iPhones, Apple has always structured its product configurations to encourage expensive upgrades at the retail counter. I do not doubt that they have tested these machines enough to determine that it works well for most users. But somewhere their definition of who buys a $999 or a INR 99,000 machine and what they want from it has drifted far from users best interests. The world is busy comparing the processing powers of the Apple chip to Intel (and others), and that makes the chip performance the metric to optimise, giving us yet another lesson on Goodhart’s law.

Artificial intelligence will increasingly play an important role in our lives. In fact we have looked at AI’s potential on this very site for over a decade. Slick interfaces like ChatGPT however have suddenly made AI consumer-accessible. While many would be scared, I do not think it is a bad thing.

So how does Bard stack up against ChatGPT? Are the days of humans creating content over?

In a quest to answer the above questions, let’s analyze the basic principles behind these two platforms and try to estimate their upcoming impact on our lives.

The AI basics

I’ve mentioned that both ChatGPT and Bard are AI language models. But what does a language model mean? I asked the same question to ChatGPT, and here is how it explained it.

“An AI language model is a type of artificial intelligence system that is designed to understand and generate natural language.”

“The basic idea behind an AI language model is that it learns to predict the probability of a sequence of words, given the words that come before it. This is done using a process called “training”. This process allows the language model to develop an understanding of the relationships between words, and to generate text that sounds natural and human-like.”

This is a pretty decent definition of the subject, in my opinion. But to make it a little accessible, let’s take a look at an example.

When you’re using the keyboard to type something on your phone, and you type a word, the keyboard recommends what you may write next and shows you that word above the keyboard interface. The keyboard app does some calculations internally and makes the prediction of what you would want to type next or what would be the most probable word that would appear next in the sentence.

This is essentially how the AI language models work. The difference between your keyboard and ChatGPT is that your keyboard usually just looks at the English grammar and your previous history to predict the next word based on the last word you typed. And on the other hand, ChatGPT has been “trained” on the entire internet with about 175 billion + parameters. In fact, Elon Musk confirmed that until recently OpenAI also had exclusive access to Twitter databases, going beyond what even someone like Google gets by simply crawling Twitter.

All of this raw data makes ChatGPT better at predicting and generating human-like text from short inputs. 

So, when you input a text or ask it a question. The Algorithm first breaks it down into individual words or clusters of words. 

It analyzes the sequence of the words, the order in which they appear in your text, and the inter-relationship between those words to gain an understanding of the context and the desired output. And it then gives you the response. Based specifically on the input text.

A good language model is good for reading a piece of text and summarizing it, manipulating it in the way you want, and answering questions about the text. Basically, all the language processing we do naturally, a good language model would be able to replicate that.

Let’s move to the meat of the matter and see what the fuss is all about.

ChatGPT

Launched on November 30, 2022, for the general public, ChatGPT is based on the GPT3, a language model that was released in 2020 by OpenAI, the same company behind ChatGPT and Dall-E.

As soon as it hit the market, people went crazy over how good it was at answering questions and solving complicated problems.

It was answering general queries, philosophical questions, coding problems, generating text and data sets, writing code blocks, writing creative articles/stories/poems, imitating other people, and it was handling a variety of other queries with nuanced answers.

The tech community went nuts over it, and it was continuously trending on Twitter for days.

It took only 5 days to reach 1 million users. And it is at the number on the list of apps by the time it took them to reach the first 100m users. 2 months in the case of ChatGPT. By comparison, the closest competitor, TikTok took 9 months to reach 100m users.

It is radically different and more useful than everything we’ve seen so far. Experts argue that it has the potential to change how the internet works, and it is already on the way to wiping many jobs from existence.

Microsoft was quick to start investing in OpenAI, the company responsible for the existence of GPT3 and ChatGPT. And it has plans to incorporate it into its own search engine product: Bing. The test version of this is currently out for some users. 

Even though the idea of the existence of a next-gen query-answering product threatens the large business share of Google, the entry of Microsoft in the story made it aware that the enemy is getting more powerful and something must be done about it.

Enter Bard

On 6th February 2023, Google’s CEO Sundar Pichai published a blog titled “An important next step on our AI journey“ to introduce Bard. Google’s own take on the AI language model.

Google is not new to the language models. Two years ago, the company announced LaMDA, abbreviated from Language Model for Dialogue Applications. Based on the GPT3 and Bert.

Google says Bard is a lightweight version of LaMDA. Working on TPUs which are faster and more efficient for AI applications.

So, Google released an advertisement asking a question to Bard. To show the capabilities of the new system. But the public was quick to locate the mistake in the answers to the advert. This resulted in about a 7% decline in Alphabet’s (Google’s parent company) stocks, wiping a value of about $100 billion.

A few months ago, one of the engineers from Google claimed that the LaMDA is too good, and they thought it was sentient. Also, ChatGPT regularly makes silly and obvious mistakes time-to-time.

Here are some examples: Basic Math, Factual Errors, Wrong Abbreviations 

And because we don’t yet have access to Bard yet, it’s hard to judge which is better or worse in comparison with one another.

We also need to consider that Google has vastly more data and processing power than ChatGPT. It would be interesting to test Bard when it releases for the general public. Also, every search query doesn’t have to be inside the chat interface. There are still some areas, like news and solid facts, that are hard to replace with chatbots.

Also, several questions arise for the future of Google’s revenue system, how creators who serve as the input to these AI models will get compensated, how the copyright laws would be shaped around this, and what happens when AI-generated content feeds itself. Only time will answer these questions, and I’m eagerly waiting for that time.

As mentioned earlier, Bard is based on TPUs or tensor processing units. Which are hardware accelerators specifically designed for Artificial Intelligence tasks. And are faster and more efficient than the GPUs that ChatGPT uses. This should mean that under the same conditions, Bard would be faster and should require lower operating and maintenance costs than ChatGPT.

But the conditions are not the same. And we’re yet to test Bard. Until then, ChatGPT seems like winning this race. But there is plenty of room for Google to improve, and it has a competitive advantage of a larger audience than Microsoft’s Bing and ChatGPT. Let’s see how the technology war moves from here and who wins this one.

Apple AirTags specifications and features

The Apple AirTags is a circular-shaped small size tracker. It can be customised by the user with free engraving including text and 31 emojis. The rear side of the AirTags has an Apple logo. The tracking device can be attached to or secured to items via Apple-designed leather loop and a ring. The Bluetooth trackers are also IP67 rated water and dust resistant.

Redmi Note 10 series

The Redmi Note 10 series arrives as the successor to last year’s Redmi Note 9 series. The lineup consists of a standard, Pro, and Pro Max variant. 

The Redmi Note 10 Pro and Pro Max are the first in the entire Redmi Note lineup to feature an AMOLED display with a 6.67-inch screen and 120Hz refresh rate panel. The devices offer a peak brightness of 1,200 nits and HDR10 support. There is a side-mounted fingerprint scanner embedded in the power button. 

Both smartphones share the same internals and design. The Redmi Note 10 Pro and Pro Max are powered by a Snapdragon 732G processor paired with up to 8GB RAM and 128GB onboard storage. The smartphones are backed by a 5,020mAh battery unit with support for 33W fast charging and run on Android 11 out of the box. 

The Redmi Note 10 Pro and Pro Max come with a quad-camera setup with the former having a 64MP main sensor while the latter featuring a 108MP lens. The rest of the camera sensors on both devices include an 8MP ultra-wide lens, a 5MP super macro unit and a 2MP depth sensor. The smartphones are fitted with a 16MP front-facing snapper.    

On the other hand, the Redmi Note 10 features a 60Hz FHD+ LCD display measuring 6.43-inches. The smartphone retains the same specifications as the Pro and Pro Max variants apart from the primary camera and processor. The standard Redmi Note 10 comes with a 48MP main sensor and is powered by a Snapdragon 678 SoC.

Realme 8 series

The Realme 8 and Realme 8 Pro are the successors to last year’s Realme 7 and 7 Pro. The latest offerings sport a 6.4-inch punch-hole sAMOLED display with an FHD+ resolution, 1000 nits brightness and an in-screen fingerprint scanner. 

The Realme 8 series features a quad-camera setup with the Pro variant equipped with a 108MP primary sensor and the standard variant with a 64MP main lens. Both devices come with an 8MP ultra-wide lens, 2MP BnW unit and a 2MP macro shooter. The smartphones are fitted with a 16MP selfie snapper. 

Internally, the Realme 8 Pro is powered by a Snapdragon 720G SoC while the standard model houses a MediaTek Helio G95 chipset. The latter also comes with a liquid cooling system for heat dissipation. The smartphones pack up to 8GB RAM and 128GB native storage. The Pro variant draws its power from a 4,500mAh battery unit with support for 50W SuperDart charge while the standard model is backed by a 5,000mAh battery with a 30W Dart charge.

OnePlus 9 series

The OnePlus 9 series comprises of a standard and Pro variant. The latest offerings arrive as a successor to last year’s OnePlus 8 series. 

The standard OnePlus 9 has a flat 6.55-inch FHD+ display while the Pro variant features a curved screen measuring 6.67-inches with QHD+ resolution. Both devices come with a 120Hz refresh rate and an in-display fingerprint scanner. 

Under the hood, the OnePlus 9 and 9 Pro are powered by a Snapdragon 888 processor coupled with up to 12GB LPDDR5 RAM and 256GB internal storage. The devices are backed by a 4,500mAh battery unit with support for 65T Warp Charge technology. The Pro model also supports 50W wireless charging. The standard and Pro variants ship with OxygenOS 11 based on Android 11.

In the camera department, the OnePlus 9 and 9 Pro is fitted with a 16MP selfie snapper. Both variants come with a Hasselblad camera system. The standard model is equipped with a triple camera setup of a 48MP main sensor, 50MP ultra-wide lens and a 2MP mono unit. The Pro variant also features the same sensors but comes with an additional 8MP telephoto lens. With the Hasselblad system, the OnePlus 9 series offers Natural Colour Calibration and professional functions for a fine-tuned photography experience. 

The OnePlus 9 series comes with connectivity options like 5G, WiFi 6, Bluetooth 5.2, dual-frequency GPS, stereo speakers and a USB-C port. 

The OnePlus 9 and 9 Pro will be available for purchase from April 1st and April 15th respectively. Both phones can be purchased from Amazon, OnePlus.in and OnePlus exclusive offline stores. 

Samsung Galaxy A72 and A52

The Samsung Galaxy A52 and A72 are the successors to last year’s Galaxy A51 and A71. Both smartphones come with slightly different specifications. 

The Galaxy A52 and A72 feature punch-hole AMOLED display with the former having a 6.5-inch screen while the latter offering a slightly larger 6.7-inch screen. Both phones offer an FHD+ display and a 90Hz refresh rate panel. 

On the hardware front, the Galaxy A52 and A72 are powered by a Snapdragon 720G processor paired with up to 8GB RAM and 256GB native storage. The former is backed by a 4,500mAh battery while the latter runs on a 5,000mAh battery with both supporting 25W fast charging. 

The Samsung Galaxy A52 and A72 sport quad-rear cameras comprising of a 64MP main sensor paired with a 12MP ultra-wide-angle lens. However, the Galaxy A52 comes with a 5MP depth and 5MP macro sensor while the A72 is equipped with an 8MP telephoto lens and a 5MP macro unit. Both smartphones are fitted with a 32MP front-facing camera. 

Other common features on the Galaxy A52 and A72 include a USB-C port, 4G VoLTE, 3.5mm jack, and an in-display fingerprint scanner.

OPPO F19 Pro series

The OPPO F19 Pro is a 4G device while the F19 Pro+ 5G is a 5G compatible smartphone. Both smartphones come with a 6.43-inch AMOLED display with FHD+ resolution and an in-screen fingerprint scanner. Design-wise, the OPPO F19 Pro series flaunts a gradient back panel and houses a rectangular camera module. 

Both the F19 Pro and Pro+ 5G are equipped with a quad-camera setup of a 48MP main sensor, an 8MP wide-angle lens, a 2MP portrait and a 2MP macro unit. Both devices feature a 16MP selfie camera on the front. 

Internally, the OPPO F19 Pro is powered by an Helio P95 processor. On the other hand, the Pro+ 5G is equipped with a Dimensity 800U processor with support for dual-mode 5G network. Both devices pack up to 8GB RAM and 128GB onboard storage. The smartphones are backed by a 4,310mAh battery unit with the F19 Pro supporting 30W fast charging while the Pro+ 5G variant featuring 50W charging. 

The F19 series runs on ColorOS 11.1 based on Android 11. The smartphones come with a USB-C port, 3.5mm jack, WiFi, Bluetooth and GPS.

ASUS ROG Phone 5

The ASUS ROG Phone 5 is the successor to ROG Phone 3. The latest generation gaming smartphone from the Taiwanese brand is offered in standard, Pro and Ultimate variants. However, the three devices share the same specifications and are differentiated only in RAM configurations. 

The ASUS ROG Phone 5 series boasts of a 6.78-inch AMOLED display with FHD+ resolution and 144Hz refresh rate screen. It offers 800 nits brightness, HDR10 support and an in-screen fingerprint scanner. 

The ROG Phone 5 trio are powered by a Snapdragon 888 coupled with up to 18GB LPDDR5 RAM and 512GB UFS 3.1 storage. The smartphones run on Android 11 OS and are backed by dual 3,000mAh batteries (total 6,000mAh) with support for 30W fast charging. There is an internal cooling system for heat dissipation. 

The ROG Phone 5 series is equipped with Air Trigger 5 controls for gaming purposes. The Pro and Ultimate variants also feature two capacitive sensors on the back panel. All three smartphones come with features like quad-microphones, 5G, WiFi 6, dual-frequency GPS, 2x MIMO, and a side-mounted USB-C port. 

The ROG Phone 5 sports a triple rear camera setup comprising of a 64MP main sensor, 13MP ultra-wide-angle lens, and a 5MP macro unit. All three devices are fitted with a 24MP selfie snapper. 

The ROG Phone 5 lineup will be available for purchase from Flipkart from April 15th.  

OPPO Find X3 series

The OPPO Find X3 and X3 Pro arrive as the successors to last year’s Find X2 lineup. The latest offerings pack significant upgrades over its predecessor. 

The Find X3 and X3 Pro sport a 6.7-inch AMOLED display with a punch-hole cutout and curved edges. The device offers a QHD+ resolution, 120Hz refresh rate, and 1,300 nits brightness. Both smartphones are equipped with an in-display fingerprint scanner. 

The Find X3 and X3 Pro come with a unique square camera module design that elevates from the sides of the back panel. The camera setup comprises of a 50MP primary sensor, 50MP ultra-wide-angle lens, 13MP telephoto unit and a 3MP macro shooter. Both devices feature a 32MP selfie snapper. 

A flagship Snapdragon 888 processor fitted under the hood keeps the Find X3 and X3 Pro running. The Pro variant packs 16GB LPDDR5 RAM and offers 512GB UFS 3.1 storage. The standard variant has 8GB RAM and up to 256GB storage. Both smartphones draw their power from a 4,500mAh battery unit with support for 65W fast wired charging and 30W wireless charging. 

Connectivity options on the Find X3 and X3 Pro include 5G, WiFi 6, dual-frequency GPS, USB-C, Bluetooth 5.2 and 2×2 MIMO. 

The OPPO Find X3 series is available in China and there’s no word on its India arrival.

Vivo X60 series

The standard Vivo X60 has a flat AMOLED screen while the Pro and Pro+ variants come with a curved display measuring 6.56-inches. All three devices offer FHD+ resolution, 120Hz refresh rate, HDR10+, and an in-screen fingerprint scanner. 

The standard and Pro variants of X60 sport a triple rear camera setup of 48MP main lens, 13MP portrait sensor and a 13MP ultra-wide-angle unit. The Pro model also features Gimbal 2.0 stabilisation. On the other hand, the X60 Pro+ is equipped with a quad-camera setup consisting of a 50MP primary shooter, 48MP Gimbal camera, a  32MP telephoto sensor and an 8MP periscope unit. All three smartphones come with a 32MP selfie snapper. 

Under the hood, the Vivo X60 and X60 Pro are powered by a Snapdragon 870 SoC while the Pro+ variant is equipped with a 5G compatible Snapdragon 888. The chipsets are coupled with up to 12GB RAM and 256GB onboard storage. The Vivo X60 series is backed by a 4,300mAh battery unit with the standard and Pro models supporting 33W fast charging while the Pro+ variant supporting 55W fast charging. The Vivo X60 series runs on Funtouch OS 11 based on Android 11 out of the box. 

The Vivo X60 series will be available for purchase from Flipkart and the brand’s official store from April 2nd.

The device is claimed to eliminate up to 35dB on bus, subway or aeroplanes. The Enco W51 also features triple-mic noise cancellation technology that lets the other person hear your voice on calls in outdoor environments. 

All three audio devices come with low latency mode that reduces lag during gaming and media consumption. 

OnePlus Buds vs Mi True Wireless Earphones 2 vs OPPO Enco W51: Other features

The OnePlus Buds, Mi True Wireless Earphones 2 and OPPO Enco W51 come with touch controls. Users can double-tap on the left or right earbud to control various functions like music playback, triggering voice assistant, answer an incoming call etc. All three audio devices feature automatic earphone removal detection that pauses the music playback when the user removes an earbud. 

The Mi True Wireless Earphones 2 work with Google Assistant, Siri and Amazon Alexa. The OnePlus Buds and OPPO Enco W51 lack voice assistant support. All three devices pack Bluetooth 5.0 connectivity for fast and seamless pairing with smartphones, laptops and PC.

The OnePlus Buds is backed by 30 hours of battery life with each earbud offering 7 hours of playback time. The Mi True Wireless Earphones 2 is claimed to offer 4 hours of usage on a single charge and up to 14 hours with the case. On the other hand, the OPPO Enco W51 delivers 4-hour music playtime on a single charge. 

All three TWS earphones can be topped up via a charging case that supports USB-C port. The OPPO Enco W51 also features wireless charging via Qi-compatible chargers. 

OnePlus Buds vs Mi True Wireless Earphones 2 vs OPPO Enco W51: Price and Verdict

The OnePlus Buds is priced at Rs 4,990 while the Mi True Wireless Earphones 2 is available at Rs 3,999. The OPPO Enco W51 retails at Rs 4,999. All three TWS earphones can be purchased from Amazon, Flipkart as well as brand’s official websites. 

Coming to the verdict, the OnePlus Buds seems like a good buy for OnePlus users and its solid battery life with fast charging as well as premium design. However, it lacks voice assistant support. 

The Mi True Wireless Earphones 2 makes it worth buying for its infrared in-ear detection, large sound driver and supported voice assistants. But its thick stem design is noticeable. 

Meanwhile, the OPPO Enco W51 packs some high-end features like ANC, excellent call quality and wireless charging that is not found in budget TWS earphones. However, the charging case looks quite flimsy and cheap. 

The touch control customizations on OnePlus Buds and OPPO Enco W51 are also restricted to only the brand’s smartphones which is a big letdown.

Connectivity-wise, all three smartwatches offer Bluetooth 5.0 and NFC. The Mi Watch Revolve also features built-in GPS while the Realme Watch S Pro comes with dual-satellite GPS for accurate location tracking.

The Mi Watch Revolve is priced at Rs 10,999. The Realme Watch S Pro and Amazfit GTR 2e costs Rs 9,999 respectivelty. All three smartwatches can be purchased from Amazon, Flipkart and brand’s official websites.

There’s not a huge difference between the three smartwatches as they share most of the same specifications and features. The Mi Watch Revolve’s body energy monitor is missing from its other two competitors. However, it also has lesser exercise modes and is pricer by Rs 1,000 compared to Realme Watch S Pro and Amazfit GTR 2e. 

The Realme Watch S Pro is equipped with a dual-core processor, 3-axis accelerometer, dual-satellite GPS and auto-brightness feature. As for the Amazfit GTR 2e, the device features a robust PAI health assessment and comes with useful offline voice assisstant and lockscreen. However, it skips on inbuilt GPS which is a letdown,

In its latest tweaks to the GST law, the Indian government has introduced an e-invoicing system for businesses. A step that will allow:

• Buyers and sellers to access the realtime information of invoices,
• Takeover the physical invoices,
• Replace the existing e-way bill system

Currently, the e-invoicing is mandatory for businesses and taxpayers with an annual turnover of over Rs.100 crore. 

The Finance Secretary, Ajay Bhushan Pandey has announced that from 1st April 2021, the government will roll out and mandate the e-invoicing system for all business-to-business (B2B) transactions under the Goods and Services Tax (GST) regime.

What is e-invoicing? 

A B2B invoice reported by the GST-registered businesses on the e-invoice portal (GSTN), an e-invoice should follow the standard format given by CBIC. 

Under the e-invoicing system, the SMEs are expected to use the generated invoice reference number (IRN). IRN is a number (also known as hash) created by the Invoice Registration Portal (IRP) to tag and indicate every valid invoice generated in India.

A 64 character unique number will be generated for every invoice raised in a financial year by a GSTIN. Hence, the system will cover all the invoices sent to recipients, credit note, or a debit note in relation to the B2B supplies and exports, while ensuring that it contains the IRN. 

E-invoicing is about reporting details of mentioned GST document to the portal, therefore, the SMEs have to continue to use external software or tool to create GST invoices.

The Pixel 4a is a mid-range smartphone and falls under the Rs 30k price bracket in India. It goes up against the recently launched OnePlus Nord and Apple’s iPhone SE 2020. We take a look at what the three phones compete against each other. 

Pixel 4a vs iPhone SE 2020 vs OnePlus Nord: Display and Design

The Pixel 4a and iPhone SE 2020 are compact smartphones. The former features a 5.8-inch OLED display with FHD+ resolution. The iPhone SE 2020 offers a 4.7-inch Retina HD screen surrounded by the top and bottom bezels. On the other hand, the OnePlus Nord sports a larger AMOLED display measuring 6.58-inches with 90Hz refresh rate panel. Both the Pixel 4a and OnePlus Nord feature a punch-hole camera cutout at the top left corner. 

Design-wise, the Pixel 4a sports a square-shaped camera module and a Mint Green colour power button. The iPhone SE 2020 retains iPhone 8-like design language with a glass back panel like the iPhone 11 series. The OnePlus Nord’s base configuration i.e. 6GB+64GB starts at Rs 24,999 and goes up to Rs 29,999 for the top-end model.

After OEMs found a way to cram more screen in a small space, Oppo debuted its Find X smartphone (way back in 2018) with an edge to edge bezel-less display and a motorised camera module making it the industry-first smartphone. Quickly after the Find X, other brands too joined the bandwagon to adopt this feature. A few manufacturers also took a different approach to the pop-up camera like slider design, rotating and flip mechanism etc.

The why and how’s of pop-up camera module

The pop-up camera module significantly eliminated the bezels on all sides of the device giving a truly immersive viewing experience to the user. No notch, no hole-punch (more on this later), no big bezel (like the Pixel 4) but just a full-screen display.  From a user’s point of view, a pop-up camera in phones is a sensible approach as it gives a distraction-free experience. It also hides the unnecessary camera hardware that isn’t going to be used all the time. A phone with a pop-up camera module looks cooler and also catches people’s attention. They are small in size and most devices featured a square shape except the first generation OPPO Reno series that had a shark-fin type design. A pop-up module is also a great option for users who are concerned with privacy since smartphones are vulnerable to hacks through a camera. 

Pop-up cameras operate very simply i.e. they rise from the module whenever the camera is activated and go back inside once the job is done. However, apart from elevating mechanisms, there are a few smartphones who take a different approach to pop-up cameras. The Find X, Lenovo Z5 and Mi Mix 3 come with a slider design. On the other hand, there are smartphones where the rear camera also doubles up as a front shooter i.e. the  Galaxy A80 features a rotating camera mechanism where it rotates its rear camera setup to the front. The Asus 6Z also adopts a similar but flip camera system.

As far as advantages go, the pop-up camera module isn’t totally without any drawbacks. The main issue is its durability even if it is quite robust. The elevating mechanism puts stress on the moving parts with the motor being the main point of failure. Most smartphone makers claim that the module’s longevity is around 3,00,000 cycles which means (if you do the math) it is capable of lasting up to four years and assuming that it is opened 200 times a day. Another reason is that the pop-up camera module isn’t waterproof or dust resistant and hence it needs constant maintenance. Even though it automatically retracts (fall detection) when the smartphone is in freefall or the module hits some concrete object, there is bound to be some kind of damage like scratches, dents etc. Under the hood, the moving parts that are required for a pop-up camera module also take up space that could be reserved for other hardware (like a bigger battery). 

The fall of pop-up camera phones:

Unfortunately, pop-up camera phones failed to create traction in the mainstream market and their duration was short-lived. Smartphone manufacturers created an alternative solution to pop-up camera modules – punch-hole display. It involved cutting a hole in the screen to accommodate the front camera sensor. Most smartphones feature a punch-hole cutout at the top corners of the display except Samsung phones where the cutout is centrally placed. Punch-hole designs give a slightly less display area compared to a full-screen experience. It does eliminate the issues of failure associated with the pop-up camera’s moving parts. 

However, the hole in the display is always there. And with smartphone makers now incorporating dual cameras on the front, the punch-hole cutout becomes even wider with no option to hide it. For users who are high on entertainment usage i.e. gaming, watching movies etc the punch-hole cutout may seem obtrusive and hinder their experience. Another drawback is that any stain or scratch on or near the punch-hole cutout would affect the picture quality of the front camera. 

Verdict

There’s no clear winner here between pop-up camera module vs punch-hole camera cutout. Right now, a pop-up camera module is the only way to get an all-screen experience and it looks very much intriguing. But on the other hand, the punch-hole design is here to stay with many flagship phones having adopted it.

Given the sort of changes we have seen in smartphone design in recent years, a display free of bezels and camera cutouts/notches seems to be the ultimate goal. Many brands are working on under-display selfie cameras. Earlier this year, we got to see Vivo’s Apex 2020 concept phone with the technology and we hope it shows up in future smartphones.

The OPPO Find X2 carries a starting price tag of Rs 64,990 and will go on sale from Amazon. The Find X2 Pro will be sold in limited quantities in India and the sale date of the same has not been announced yet.

According to a report, OnePlus will launch one budget and one mid-range TV with the former retailing for around Rs 15,000. The brand hasn’t revealed any key specifications of its upcoming offering. The televisions are expected to retain a few features from its premium Q1 series. By launching affordable TVs, OnePlus aims to take on the likes of Xiaomi, Realme, Nokia and Motorola in the Indian market. 

OnePlus TV Q1 and Q1 Pro specifications:

OnePlus forayed into the television market in September last year. Both the OnePlus TV Q1 and Q1 Pro are the brand’s premium offerings with the same specifications and design. However, the TVs are differentiated in terms of audio. The Q1 comes with four speakers while the Q1 Pro is equipped with 8 speakers with a sliding soundbar integrated into the chassis. The OnePlus TV Q1 and Q1 Pro feature a 55-inch QLED display with Dolby Vision. The TVs run on Android 9-based Android TV OS and come with Google Assistant, Play Store, Youtube and OTT platforms like Netflix, Prime Video. Surface Pro X specifications:

Starting with the Surface Pro X, this is a 2-in-1 convertible device that can be used in various form factors. It features a 13-inch edge-to-edge touchscreen display bearing a QHD resolution. Microsoft claims that the Surface Pro X is its thinnest 2-in-1 laptop measuring 7.3mm. The convertible laptop features a 5MP front-facing camera and a 10MP rear shooter. Both the cameras are capable of recording 1080p FHD video. On the audio front, the Surface Pro X is equipped with 2W stereo speakers with Dolby Audio and dual far-field studio mics.

Under the hood, the Surface Pro X is powered by Microsoft SQ1 chipset developed in partnership with Qualcomm. The processor is paired with an Adreno 685 GPU onboard. The Surface Pro X packs up to 16GB RAM and offers up to 512GB storage in the form of an SSD.

The laptop is claimed to last up to 13 hours on a single charge. It offers LTE connectivity with a nano-SIM slot. Other connectivity options include two USB-C ports, a Surface Connect port, Surface Keyboard Connector port, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS and GLONASS. 

Surface Laptop 3:

The Microsoft Surface Laptop 3 is available in 13.3 and 15.5-inch screen sizes. Both the variants come with support for the Surface Pen. The 13.3-inch houses the latest 10th gen Intel Core processor upto Core i7. The  15.5 -inch model is equipped with AMD chipset. Both the models pack 16GB DDR3 RAM and offer 128GB SSD storage.

Surface Pro 7:

The Mi Robot Vacuum Mop-P is a circular device with a brushless motor that provides 2,100Pa suction power. The device features a Laser Detection System and upgraded SLAM navigation that intelligently plans the route and map of the room. The Mi Robot Vacuum Mop-P is equipped with 12 high precision sensors allowing the device to navigate accurately. In terms of cleaning, the smart vacuum cleaner offers two cleaning modes – Sweeping+Mopping and Sweeping-only mode. The later is meant for dry-cleaning the floor. Xiaomi claims that the device can simulate manual mopping with dual direction repeated wiping.

The Mi Robot Vacuum Mop-P is equipped with 55ml trash bin and a 2-in-1 water tank. The later can be electronically controlled and has three gears of water dispensing modes along with a water clogging prevention mechanism. 

On the hardware front, the Mi Robot Vacuum Mop-P is powered by a quad-core Cortex A7 chipset coupled with Mali 400 GPU. The device draws its power from a 3,200mAh battery unit. It is capable of going back to its charging point if the battery dies mid-way and automatically resume cleaning from the last breakpoint. The Mi Robot Vacuum Mop-P can be connected to the smartphone via the Mi Home app. It offers a range of features like remote control, real-time mapping, spot cleaning and more. Users can also create restricted zones so that the smart cleaner doesn’t clean areas such as carpets or washrooms. The Mi Robot Vacuum Mop-P features Wi-Fi connectivity and generates 70dB noise while operating.

Samsung and Apple have also increased the price of their premium products by up to Rs 10,000. Notably, every RAM and storage configuration of a device has received a price hike. 

Smartphone manufacturers in India offer their products at an aggressive price making it a cut-throat competition between brands. It’s worth noting that apart from existing smartphones, upcoming devices will also carry a higher price tag than what brands usually price them due to the GST hike. Additionally, the new GST rate is permanent and the increased prices won’t be rolled back, however, consumers can expect a price drop on older devices.

The increased prices ultimately lead to buyers paying more for smartphones and it remains to be seen how the consumer market reacts to this.

Huawei P40 Pro and Pro+ specifications:

The Huawei P40 Pro and Pro+ sport a 6.58-inch curved screen AMOLED display bearing a QHD+ resolution. The former offers a 90Hz refresh rate while the latter maxes out at 120Hz. Both smartphones feature a pill-shaped cutout at the top left corner that houses two front-facing cameras and a dedicated 3D face unlock sensor. The Pro and Pro+ models flaunt a combination of glass and metal chassis along with IP68 rating for water and dust resistance. 

In the camera department, the P40 Pro and P40 Pro+ are equipped with Leica-branded quad and penta camera setups respectively. The configuration on Pro+ variant consists of a 50MP RYYB sensor, a 40MP cine lens, 8MP periscope telephoto shooter with 10x optical zoom and 100x digital zoom, 8MP optical telephoto lens and lastly a ToF depth sensor. The setup on the Pro model is the same as above except that it skips the 8MP periscope sensor. On the front, the Huawei P40 Pro and Pro+ smartphones are fitted with a 32MP selfie snapper, a 3D depth sensor and a dedicated IR sensor for 3D face recognition. 

Under the hood, the Huawei P40 Pro and Pro+ houses the Kirin 990 processor with 5G connectivity. It is coupled with LPDDR5 RAM and UFS 3.1 storage technology up to 12GB and 512GB respectively. Both smartphones are powered by 4,200mAh battery units The Pro model supports 40W SuperCharge technology and 27W wireless charging while the latter supports 55W wired and 40W wireless charging respectively. Both devices come with 5W reverse wireless charging. 

Huawei P40 specifications:

Coming to the standard variant of Huawei P40, the device is a toned-down variant of the Pro models. This one features a 6.1-inch flat screen with FHD+ display and a 60Hz refresh rate panel. Like the Pro siblings, the standard variant comes with an elliptical cutout for housing dual front cameras comprising of 32MP selfie shooter and a 3D depth sensor. However, it lacks a 3D face scanning sensor. 

On the back, the vanilla P40 sports a triple camera setup consisting of 50MP RYYB main lens accompanied by a 16MP wide-angle shooter and an 8MP telephoto sensor with 3x optical zoom and 30x digital zoom. 

The Huawei P40 is also equipped with a Kirin 990 5G chipset coupled with 8GB RAM and 128GB onboard storage. The device is backed by a 3,800mAh battery unit with support for 22.5W SuperCharge technology. It doesn’t feature wireless charging. 

The Huawei P40 series is equipped with a hybrid SIM slot, e-SIM, Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.1, NFC, GPS, USB-C and in-display fingerprint scanners. 

Huawei P40 series pricing & availability:

Starting with the standard P40, the device is priced at EUR 799 (~Rs 65,900) for the 8GB+128GB configuration in Europe. The Pro variant will cost EUR 999 (~Rs 82,900) for 8GB+256GB option. The Pro+ model carries a price tag of EUR 1,399 (~Rs 1,15,300) for 8GB+512GB variant. Earlier in February, the pandemic had derailed Mobile World Congress (MWC) tech trade show in Barcelona, Spain. Search giant Google also cancelled its annual I/O developer conference. Meanwhile, back in India, smartphone manufacturers Xiaomi and Realme have postponed the launch of Mi 10 and Realme Narzo smartphones respectively. Vivo has suspended its upcoming product launches as well. Cupertino-based Apple has also shut down its production facilities at manufacturing partner Foxconn and Wistron. With manufacturing coming to a halt, we are likely to see delays in upcoming launches, sales and deliveries. 

Meanwhile, as a result of country-wide lockdown, brands like OnePlus, Realme, OPPO and Huawei have extended warranties on their products. Device warranties that are set to expire during this lockdown period will get an extension. The companies are also providing an extension validities on services like screen replacement. Both OnePlus and Realme are extending warranty on its smartphones, earphones and accessories till 31st May. The replacement period is also increased from 15 to 30 days. OPPO is offering extended warranty until further notice. 

Huawei users whose warranty is expiring between March 21st-June 21st will get extended warranty till June 30th. The brand is also offering a doorstep repair service for its smartwatch in India. It includes a no-cost replacement for its devices that have manufacturing defects or performance-related issues. However, if the smartwatch is out of warranty period, users can also avail its spare parts.

We haven’t seen the full impact of COVID-19 yet. With consumer demand in India expected to plummet in 2020, we are going to see a few rough quarters to say the least. Smaller companies and startups are going to suffer the most with several of them headed towards layoffs.

Nokia 8.3 5G:

As the name suggests, the Nokia 8.3 5G is the Finnish brand’s first 5G smartphone. The device features an FHD+ LCD PureDisplay measuring 6.81-inches with a punch-hole cutout at the top left corner. The display supports HDR content. The smartphone’s rear panel design is similar to the Nokia 6.2 and Nokia 7.2. It houses a circular camera module along with a LED flash. The Nokia 8.3 5G flaunts a Nordic Design and ships in Polar Night colour option. The smartphone’s power button located on the right side doubles up as a fingerprint scanner. 

The Nokia 8.3 5G’s quad-cameras feature ZEISS lens comprising of a 64MP main sensor, a 12MP ultra-wide shooter, a 2MP macro and 2MP depth camera. Upfront, a 24MP snapper is fitted for selfies. The smartphone comes with camera-related features like 4K video recording, HDR, action cam mode and ZEISS cinema capture and editor. 

Internally, the Nokia 8.3 5G is equipped with a Snapdragon 765G processor with support for 5G connectivity. It packs up to 8GB RAM and offers 128GB onboard storage. Nokia 5.3 and Nokia 1.3:

The Nokia 5.3 is a mid-range device and arrives as the successor to the Nokia 5.1. The device sports a 6.55-inches display with 1,600 x 720 pixels screen resolution. There is a waterdrop notch on the top, a dedicated Google Assistant button on the side and a rear-mounted fingerprint scanner. The Nokia 5.3 is powered by a Snapdragon 665 processor paired with 6GB RAM and up to 128GB storage expandable up to 512GB. The smartphone sports a quad-rear camera setup consisting of a 13MP main shooter, 5MP ultra-wide-angle lens, 2MP macro and 2MP depth sensor. The device features an 8MP front-facing camera. As for the Nokia 1.3, it is an entry-level device with a 5.7-inch display bearing an HD+ resolution. Nokia 5310:

Apart from smartphones, Nokia also announced the renewed version of the Nokia 5310 XpressMusic. The latest offering retains the same design and music buttons from the original feature phone. The feature phone comes with a 2.4-inch QVGA colour display. It has a curved glass screen and rounded corners. The Nokia 5310 is powered by a modest MediaTek MT6260A chipset along with 8MB RAM. It offers 16GB of native storage with a dedicated microSD card slot. The device features a VGA camera with flash. It runs on Nokia Series 30+ OS. The feature phone is backed by a 1,200mAh battery unit with standby time up to 30 days and talk time up to 20.7 hours.

Samsung Galaxy S20:

Samsung’s flagship Galaxy S20 lineup consists of a standard, Plus and Ultra variant. All three smartphones come with a higher 120Hz refresh rate screen for smooth animations and transitions. They are also equipped with an ultrasonic in-display fingerprint scanner. The standard, Plus and Ultra variants of Galaxy S20 sport a Super AMOLED display measuring 6.2, 6.7 and 6.9-inches respectively. In terms of design, the smartphones feature a centrally-aligned punch-hole display and a rectangular camera module on the rear. 

In the camera department, both the Galaxy S20 and S20+ are equipped with a 12MP primary sensor, a 12MP ultra-wide-angle lens and a 64MP telephoto shooter with up to 30x zoom. The Plus variant also gets an additional DepthVision camera. On the other hand, the Galaxy S20 Ultra features a 108MP wide-angle lens with a whopping 100x Super Resolution zoom. The rest of the camera setup on Ultra variant comprises of a 48MP sensor, a 12MP ultra-wide main camera and a DepthVision lens.

On the front, the Galaxy S20 and S20+ are fitted with a 10MP front camera while the Ultra variant features a 40MP selfie snapper. All three smartphones are capable of recording 8K videos.

The Ultra variant draws its power from a 5,000mAh battery with 45W charging tech. 

The vanilla Galaxy S20 starts at $999 (~Rs 72,000) and the Plus model starts at $1,199 (~Rs 85,000). The Ultra variant carries a starting price tag of $1,399 (~Rs 1 lakh). All three smartphones will go on sale starting March 6. 

Galaxy Z Flip:

Samsung’s second-generation foldable smartphone is different from last year’s Galaxy Fold. The Galaxy Z Flip features a clamshell design as found on the Moto RAZR 2019. It can be folded vertically instead of horizontally. The device sports a 6.7-inch AMOLED display bearing FHD+ resolution and HDR10+ support. There is a secondary 1.1-inch screen on the outside that displays notifications, time, weather updates and more. It is placed alongside the dual rear camera setup comprising of a 12MP primary and 12MP ultra-wide-angle sensor. On the front, the device gets a 10MP camera for selfies and video calling. The foldable phone features a side-mounted fingerprint scanner. 

The Galaxy Z Flip is powered by a Snapdragon 855+ chipset coupled with 8GB RAM and 256GB internal storage. The foldable smartphone is a 4G-only device and runs on a 3,300mAh battery unit with 15W wired and 9W wireless charging. The Galaxy Z Flip boots Android 10 with OneUI 2.0 on the top. 

The Galaxy Z Flip is priced at $1,380 (~Rs 98,000) and goes on sale on February 14th.

Galaxy Buds+:

The Galaxy Buds+ comes with improvements over its predecessor. It comes with three microphones on each earbud compared to two on the original Buds. Apart from controlling music playback, the touchpad on Galaxy Buds+ comes with a Spotify button. The latest offering retains the same design from its predecessor. 

The Galaxy Buds+ are equipped with two-way speakers tuned by audio brand AKG. However, the audio accessory doesn’t come with an active noise cancellation feature. The latest wireless earbuds come with improved battery life. Each earbud packs an 85mAh battery unit while the wireless charging case has a 270mAh battery. Samsung claims that the Galaxy Buds+ can provide 11 hours of usage on a single charge. The battery life goes up to 22 hours with the charging case. 

The Galaxy Buds+ will cost $149 (~Rs 10,630) with sales starting from February 14th in the US. Customers who have pre-ordered the Galaxy S20+ and S20 Ultra will receive the Buds+ bundled with the smartphone.

BlackBerry Key2 Specifications and Features

The BlackBerry Key2 features a rubberized rear  with diamond patter finish for better grip and it is flanked with the strong 7000-series aluminum frame. It features a 4.5-inch IPS LCD screen that produces FHD+ resolution of 1080 x 2160 pixels along with an aspect ratio of 3:2.

The Snapdragon 660 and 6 GB of RAM are present under the hood of the phone. The handset comes in two storage options such as 64 GB and 128 GB. It also includes a dedicated slot for adding a microSD card.

BlackBerry Key2 is the first phone from the company to feature a dual camera setup. It comprises of regular 12-megapixel primary sensor with f/1.8 aperture and a secondary telephoto lens of 12-megapixel with f/2.6 aperture.

It offers a photography called Optical Superzoom which allow Key2 users to capture better zoomed-in shots. This is done by capturing multiple shots every time the user hits the shutter button. The shot images are stitched together to produce a photo that contains very less noise. Sitting at the front is an 8-megapixel selfie camera. It uses the display of the phone to function as flash.

The handset is loaded with Android 8.1 Oreo. It comes with the company’s DTEK security feature as well as Google Lens and Google Assistant. It also comes with business-related software package, BBM messaging app and secure folder feature called Locker.

The BlackBerry Key2 has been included in the Google’s Android Enterprise Recommended program. This means that users of this phone will enjoy regular flow of security updates released by Google. The manufacturer has also promised that it will be receiving one major Android update which means it will be blessed with Android 9.0 P update.

The global sale of the BlackBerry Key2 will start sometime later in this month. Even though the smartphone does not feature flagship specs, it carries an expensive price tag of $649. It can be availed in two colors like Black and Silver.

Lenovo Z5

The Lenovo Z5 smartphone features a notched IPS LCD display that measures 6.2 inches. The elongated display carries support for an aspect ratio of 19:9. The 1.8 GHz octa-core processor of the Snapdragon 636 chipset powers the smartphone along with 6 GB of RAM. It can be availed in two storage variants like 64 GB and 128 GB.

Lenovo K5 Note

Lenovo had launched the K5 Note in 2016. Today, the company has unveiled a new smartphone with the same moniker as the successor for its 2016 edition. The new Lenovo K5 Note has arrived with a 6-inch IPS LCD display that supports HD+ resolution of 720 x 1440 pixels along with an aspect ratio of 18:9. The Snapdragon 450 chipset powers the smartphone. The 32 GB and 64 GB variants of the phone respectively feature 3 GB and 4 GB of RAM. For more storage, the handset offers its users with a microSD card slot. The fingerprint scanner is located on the backside of the phone.

The horizontal dual camera setup includes 16-megapixel sensor with f/2.0 aperture that is assisted by f/2.4 aperture 2-megapixel fixed focus sensor for depth sensing. It has a selfie shooter of 8-megapixel with f/2.0 aperture. Like the Lenovo Z5, the K5 Note is loaded with Android 8.1 Oreo that is modified with ZUI 4.0. It is fueled by 3,760mAh battery. Recent reports have it that Xiaomi Mi 8 will be the world’s first Android phone to arrive with 3D facial scanning feature. It is speculated that it could be available in two variants such as Mi 8 and Mi 8 SE. Both the models are expected to arrive with support for 3D facial identification.

The internal code of Xiaomi’s website and recently leaked posters have revealed that the Mi 8 may feature 4 GB of RAM, 64 GB of storage, rear-mounted fingerprint scanner. Its rumored color variants include gray, blue, gold and red. The Mi 8 may feature a smaller display than Mi 8 SE.

The Xiaomi Mi 8 SE could be an advanced smartphone with 3D face scanner and under display fingerprint reader. It is expected to feature 6 GB of RAM and may arrive in internal storage options like 64 GB, 128 GB and 256 GB. It is speculated to arrive in colors like black, gold, white and blue.

However, through the Weibo post, Jun has confirmed that the company won’t be launching the Mi Max 3 at the upcoming event. Jun had previously confirmed that the successor of the Mi Max 3 will be unleashed in July this year.

Surge S2

Rumors have claimed that the home-grown 14nm Surge S2 SoC will be also unleashed on May 31. It is expected to arrive as the successor for 28nm Surge S1 phone that had powered Xiaomi Mi 5C from February 2017. Samsung Galaxy A6 and Galaxy A6+ Specifications and Features

The Galaxy A6 and Galaxy A6+ are identical looking smartphones. These smartphones are equipped with metallic chassis with a unique looking u-shaped antenna lining present at the top and bottom portions of the back panel. The Galaxy A6 measures 149.9 x 70.8 x 7.7mm whereas the dimensions of the bigger A6+ are 160.2 x 75.7 x 7.9mm. These smartphones cane be availed in colors like Blue, Black and Gold.

The Galaxy A6 has a 5.65-inch S-AMOLED display that produces HD+ resolution of 720 x 1480 pixels whereas the Galaxy A6+ has a 6-inch S-AMOLED screen that offers FHD+ resolution of 2220 x 1080 pixels. Since these smartphones are equipped Infinity Display design, their screens offer an aspect ratio of 18.5:9.

The Exynos 7 series chipset that includes a 1.6 GHz octa-core processor drives the 32 GB and 64 GB storage variants of the Galaxy A6.  These variants respectively feature 3 GB and 4 GB of RAM. The Galaxy A6+ is fueled by 1.8 GHz octa-core Snapdragon 450 chipset which is assisted by 4 GB of RAM. It has an internal storage of 64 GB. For more storage, users can add a microSD card to the external storage on both phones. The Galaxy A6 has 3,000mAh battery whereas the larger sibling is packed with 3,500mAh battery.

The Galaxy A6 features has a 16-megapixel rear camera with f/1.6 aperture on its rear. It has a selfie camera of 16-megapixel with f/1.9 aperture.

On the other side, the Galaxy A6+ has a dual camera setup on its back. It comprises of f/1.6 aperture 16-megapixel primary sensor that is assisted f/1.9 aperture 5-megapixel secondary sensor. The selfie snapper of 24-megapixel with f/1.9 aperture has been placed on the frontside of the A6+. The front and rear cameras on the Galaxy A6 duo feature LED flash. For enhanced photo-shooting experience, the A6 and A6+ includes features like Live Bokeh and Background Blur Shape.

The Galaxy A6 duo are preinstalled with Android 8.0 Oreo that is overlaid with Samsung Experience 9.0 UI. For security, the Galaxy A6 and A6+ are fitted with rear-mounted fingerprint scanner. The front cameras on both phones carry support for face unlock.

Samsung Galaxy A6 and Galaxy A6+ Pricing and Availability

The base model of the Galaxy A6 carries a pricing of Rs. 21,990 and its 64 GB edition can be availed by spending Rs. 22,990. The Galaxy A6+ has a hefty price tag of Rs. 25,990.

The sales of the Galaxy A6 and A6+ will begin from May 22 through multiple online platforms such as Samsung India e-store, Paytm Mall and Amazon India. The A6 duo will be also available at offline stores.
