STOKES CROFT: FREE SHOP

Having faced an eviction and then having sitex plastered all over the front of it, the communities freeshop has been given a revamp! The ethos of the freeshop is that everything you find inside is free to take away, and also everything you give is also given away for free as well.

Following the eviction, the sitex and resulting tags and general mess made the shop seem scabby as fuck and even some people even commenting recently that "It's nice to see the free shop open again" Thing is, its been open all the time, all it needed was a lick of paint in the right places and spirits have been rejuventated again. Definetly a place to go and have a look see, pop down there to see how you can get involved, whats on offer and if you have any stuff you don't want anymore, the boys and girls are never shy to donations.

A lick of paint or two later and a few rolls of wallpaper and the the CLASS is put back into the classics shopfront. We used the classics typeface (see the top of photo) reproduced it and enlarged it to size via stencil.

The finished article. after umming and ahhhing, we opted to leave the anarchist red and black on the far left (excuse the pun) 3 and a half days work and the freeshop looks transformed. Not bad for a scruffy bunch of anarchists.

Imposta Costa Street art!

Recently, Costa coffee moved onto Gloucester Road in Bristol. Having failed in gaining planning permission and approval from Bristol City Council, they went ahead with building it and opening. To date, they are still open now, funnily enough it would seem: struggling for business with four indy cafes within a 20 second walk. They are not needed, more expensive and yet another example of corporate power forcing their values and business on an area that had already spoken in opposition. Since then, Costa (Owned by Mr Montgomery: also owner of the Costa Coffee outlet on Whiteladies road and westbury on trym respectively) (also without proper planning permission) has been opened, and has faced public protest, in many forms.

Just what the hell is going on in the UK? We have already seen the Murdoch empire shown to be full of corruption. hacking phones. The links between Andy coulson and David Cameron have been highlighted. The fact that Rupert Murdoch and others FUNDED largely the conservative political campaign, which subsequently saw them elected.

What has happened from this? Has David Cameron been arrested? has he been brought in for questioning? -NO.

We have seen David Cameron and others in government go on a 'tour' of the middle east, only a few months before Libya was bombed. The media harnesses all its energies in showing us the rebels in Libya. they show us one side of the story. What is not so often mentioned is that Gaddafi and Libya were supported by the west for years, decades. We arm both sides of the conflict and then stand back and watch the fireworks. We have money to spend on war, but no money to feed people, both here and across the planet. You only have to take a look at the horn of Africa to see this totally corrupt, unfair and systematic killing taking place.

We have the worlds largest arms fair coming to london soon the DSEI. Why do we have to kill people, simply put, couldn't we instead use the money we 'spend' on killing people, instead be spent on feeding people? On educating people? on housing people?

It is a disgrace.

We have seen the MP's dragged out with the hacking scandal. We have seen them shown to be the thieves that they are claiming second home allowances, claiming through their expenses: all on the taxpayer. Then we see them in parliament, standing there having the audacity to condemn people who looted shops across London. Then you flip over the TV channel and see scenes of people with guns, anarchy on the streets of many countries on the middle east.

The news anchors and pundits, celebrate the peoples uprising.

We have seen over 300 deaths in police custody in the UK since 1997. How many police officers have been investigated and subsequently charged following these deaths? -none.

You know, when I hear David Cameron say: "what we have witnessed across Britain's streets is moral collapse"

I couldn't agree more. Yes we have seen and are seeing moral collapse. This isn't only on the part of the looters. This is also throughout the people who are supposed to be representing the people. The illusion of democracy is failing us as a human race.

We see small African children on our television screens with flies in their eyes. We have been numbed by the television, our eyes blinded- our moral compass twisted inside out.

We saw Boris Johnson with his broom 'sweeping' the streets of London with the proclaimed 'moral army'

-only thing is: Boris never cleaned an inch. It was all a PR stunt. He arrived in a range rover, then left as soon as the photos had been taken.

For there ever to be peace in this world, I believe we need to see justice. That means everyone. For far to long, we have seen socialism for the rich and capitalism for the poor.

It seems to me time after time after time, all of these stories that come out are around for a short while and then swept under the carpet. What are we to do?

Not so long ago, we were hearing all about the unpaid tax bills of many businesses operating both here in the UK and across the world to evade taxpaying. Boots, Vodafone, RBS, Topshop were the few that got a big mention. But there were more. many more.

My friend tells me to stay calm and not get angry. I'm not angry. I would describe myself as disappointed. disappointed in that we seem to be saturated in all this information that tells us all about the corruption. But what is done about it? nothing. Business as usual.

We are taught that all these incidents are isolated incidents far removed from each other. but they are not. this is a web of corruption, which in fact spans the globe.

I go outside, and its business as usual for most people. Am I the one that is mad? For most, they stay asleep content at suckling at the breast being fed whatever is available.

I hope in my heart that all those that have done wrong, will be brought to justice. We are all human. the big issue seller. the banker. the dinnerlady. the artist.

No one has the right, to be or to be seen to be having more power over another human being than another. This has to stop. we were born free and we will die free. We therefore should live as 'free' as possible.

I write this to whoever is reading it, with love and compassion. With the fond hope that you and I, all of us, will one day find truth, enlightenment, freedom, justice and peace.

What does the future hold for us? three o clock ramblings....

Just recently, I have been thinking about the future a lot. Not just my future, but what future we as a society have in store. One part of me is excited, another part feels anxious and nervous about what is to come.

More and more people are waking up everyday to the shit that is being pulled on us. Some people are new to all of it and are deeply shocked to see the police acting in such a violent manner. Someone said to me, until recently, they believed all that the mainstream media told them. He told me that, before- whatever happens we can always depend on the media sources to find out the truth of what is going on in the world.

Right now, I think humanity is in a weird space. Some people will judge me on this, but in some ways I feel sorry for the police. When I say police, I don't mean the hardened thugs who smash our skulls when we are peacefully objecting to the shit the powers that be are trying to pull on us. Many of these police officers are just following orders. Some of them enjoy it. I never forget the look on the riot officers face and his protruding eyes as he smashed the baton into my skull twice, whilst I was on the floor.

I feel sorry for the cops who actually, don't agree with whats going on, but want to make the world a better place. I want to see the police return to a situation where they are looking after all of us, not the interests of the state and a few very wealthy individuals.

Like I said, in some respects I'm a little scared of what is to come. We hear the screams of 'revolution!' coming from all over the planet. This is a very exciting time. I can imagine a different future. I can see it. I can taste it. We can be free, free from the shackles of oppression and truly become our own Gods.The thing that worries me the most, is that lots of people are shouting the word 'revolution!' but when I ask them 'well what next?' how will society be ordered? 'how will administration work?' who will make decisions?' 'Will it become a survival of the fittest issue?'

In some respects, I dont think that society is ready for a revolution just yet. Theres many who are ready for what is coming, and are actively pushing for it. I salute you my brothers and sisters.I love you, all of you, because, you are what keep me going. I know that with so many creative, beautiful human beings close to me, we can, will and are building a better future for all of us and the generations to come.I look forward to the day that I will be able to sit down with my grandchildren, children and younger generations and tell them all about what happened on and around the year 2012.I'll say I don't know how it happened, but it just did. They tried to put to much weight on the backs of ordinary people: and after time, people would not take it anymore.I want to say to the new generations, even if we are unsuccessful, that at least I tried. We all did. We tried to say no more to the tyrannical machine and we want something different. something more human. A society of compassion built on truth, freedom, respect and justice.Over the past 5 years, I have been witness to some terrible things. I imagine that such things are not as bad as in other places in the world, places where you are shot, for simply standing up for what you believe in. For standing up for your family and your friends.This being said, some of the things I have seen over this time are still in my brain. Seeing the images of people being (state legitimised) brutality, makes me sick to my stomach. Why does one human have the right to touch another human being in such a way? we are born equal. We should love our lives equally as well.The ongoing debates I am having with myself continuously consist of two things mainly. one of the is the debate between violence and non violence. The ideas about just what is violence, when is it justified (if ever) who has nthe right to use violence, has boggled my mind for quite some time now. The other thing that puzzles me is what I mentioned before. What do we mean by revolution? What comes after the revolution? what do we want? how can everyones needs and desires be met?We have come a long way in a short space of time. Its pretty amazing really. Thinking back, We have lost a lot, and I fear that we are about to lose a whole lot more. The fear of what is to come, is definetly there for me. It exist within me, because as a child, I can already partially see what is to come. But on the same page, you know, I have FAITH. I know that no matter how many times they can beat with truncheons, how many jobs they can cut, how many lives the rich can wreck, humanity, we will be ok.They can take everything from us, but there is a couple of things that they cannot. One os our memories. They can't take them from us. No one has seen such beautiful imagery as our eyes have. Everyone is unique, with its own opinions and experiences in life.

The other thing that they cannot take away from us, is our soul. our compassion. our understanding. our togetherness. I hope that we will soon arrive at a place, in which we are all a little bit happier. With equality comes peace and with peace comes love. Our generation will not be like the ones that have come before us. It's our future, lets make it into something thats fun, compassionate and full of joy and wonder.Peace to you. Tesco : stokes croft ANOTHER ARREST YESTERDAY.

Another arrest yesterday. We were walking past the *new Tesco in Stokes croft yesterday, when we saw two people outside it, peacefully handing out leaflets about Tescos and their disgraceful policies.

Just after 12noon, we walked across the road and went to see what was going on, when then a police car pulled up quickly and two police officers jumped out. One officer went into Tescos and started to talk with the security. The other police officer started to the two people that were handing out leaflets.

After the police spoke to both parties, They then arrested the woman, for an 'alleged assualt' on a tescos staff member.

I was filming this on my camera on my phone, which I will try to get uploaded soon.

I was then later shown the video of the actual incident. It clearly shows Tescos staff and security ganging up on the people outside peacefully handing out leaflets on the public pathway. One member of staff grabs a cardboard sign and rips it in half, with security also putting on pressure- telling these people that they can't do that on Tescos property.

SO WILL THE PERSON WHO RIPPED UP THE SIGN, also face the same treatment? Or does working at this specific branch of grotesco now mean that they have immunity and can destroy peoples property?

ONE RULE FOR ONE???

The person handing out leaflets was then arrested based on a testament of a tescos employee, with no factual evidence at this time.

Again, it would seem that the police are acting in a manner which can only be seen as acting in tesco and big business interest.

The woman was arrested detained processed and later released at 7.30.

The Prisoner is a 17-episode British television series first broadcast in the UK from 29 September 1967 to 1 February 1968. Starring and co-created by Patrick McGoohan, it combined spy fiction with elements of science fiction, allegory, and psychological drama.

The series follows a British former secret agent who is held prisoner in a mysterious seaside village where his captors try to find out why he abruptly resigned from his job. Although sold as a thriller in the mould of McGoohan's previous series, Danger Man (called Secret Agent in its U.S. release), the show's combination of 1960s countercultural themes and surreal setting had a far-reaching effect on science fiction/fantasyprogramming, and on popular culture in general.

The series follows an unnamed British agent who abruptly resigns his job, and then finds himself held captive in a mysterious seaside "village" that is isolated from the mainland by mountains and sea. The Village is further secured by numerous monitoring systems and security forces, including a mysterious balloon-like device called Rover that captures those who attempt escape.

The agent encounters the Village's population, hundreds of people from all walks of life and cultures, all seeming to be tranquilly living out their lives. As they do not use names, they have each been assigned a number. The agent inquires of the Village's chief administrator, Number Two, "Who is Number One?", to which Number Two responds, "You are Number Six". The dialogue continues, "We want information", to which the agent responds "You won't get it!". "By hook or by crook, we will..."

The task of attempting to extract information from Number Six is carried out by the ever-changing "Number Two", acting as supposed proxy to the unseen "Number One".

As the series unfolds, the audience learns that the Village authorities have other interests in Number Six aside from the knowledge he possesses: interests that often spare Number Six from the more destructive information-gathering techniques employed by the Village authorities upon other inmates.

Number Six, distrusting of anyone involved with the Village, refuses to co-operate or provide answers. Alone, he struggles with multiple goals: determine for which side the Village works, remain defiant to its imposed authority, concoct his own plans for escape, learn all he can about the Village and subvert its operation. Some of his schemes, while not resulting in an escape, do lead to the dismissal of an incumbent Number Two on two occasions.

By the end of the series the administration, becoming desperate for Number Six's knowledge and fearful of his growing influence in the Village, take drastic measures that threaten the lives of Number Six, Number Two, and the rest of the Village.

The series features striking and often surreal storylines, and themes include hypnosis, hallucinogenic drug experiences, identity theft, mind control, dream manipulation, and various forms of social indoctrination. A major theme of the show is individualism versus collectivism.

This is probably one of the best captures of the truth I have seen so far. Why were 160 riot police drafted in from three different counties? Was there any truth behind a threat of a petrol bomb? Why did the police completely leave for 30 minutes? What does footage from the ground and first hand accounts tell us? Why does this differ from the mainstream medias account?

Bristol has a history of riots, but scenes like that have not been seen on the streets for something like 20 years. Will TESCO finally understand that they are and never wanted here? TESCO have caused major upset in Stokes Croft and now it is time for them to leave.

After over a year of battle between the Stokes Croft community and TESCOS, Things eventually came to a head. Stokes Croft in Bristol is a fantastic place and if you have never been there before I highly recommend popping down to have a look. The artwork all over the streets is fantastic, the cafes/bars/shops and restaurants are amazing. The people, well put it this way I have never lived in a place like it, the people are lovely as well.

Many of you will now of heard of Stokes croft through the Lame stream media. All of you will have heard of Tescos.

Currently, according to the TESCO store locator, there is 40 (minus stokes croft store-currently out of action) TESCO's registered with a BS postcode.

Over a year ago now, Tescos forced their way into our lovely community. Over 3000 cards were signed and sent to Bristol City Council, objecting to yet another TESCO on our doorsteps. With 5 tescos within a 1 mile radius of the city centre, when will their growth and takeover ever end?

As I mentioned, you will have all probably heard of what happened on the streets of stokes croft on a bank holiday Thursday night. The lame stream media, showed clips of fiery scenes over and over again, painting the scene that they wanted to portray. Very little of the coverage actually explored the issues at the heart of the story though. Tescos was not wanted. They forced their way in.

I do not condone nor do I condemn the actions of people that were their that night. The truth of the matter is, that the police came in extremely heavy handed: with over 160 riot police in attendance to deal with 4 squatters in a building across the road from the new Tesco store. Tensions were already running high, in a place where people care about their area very much and are extremely vocal to what happens to it in terms of development. The council did not listen to the people that they are paid to represent. On that Thursday night, whether right or wrong, people took matters into their own hands.

BUT WHAT DO YOU EXPECT WILL HAPPEN IF YOU FAIL TO LISTEN TO PEOPLES VOICES?

As I write this, Tescos is still boarded up. Paint is all over the road, as a memory to all of what happened that night. Bristol City Council were asked not to allow the 41st Tesco in Bristol, with thousands in support also saying no. They failed to listen and this has been the result of the council and TESCO forcing their plans on people that simply do not want it.

As I have mentioned before, I am not anti supermarket. There are benefits from such places in the 21st century. The practices and tactics of these places however I do not agree with. They put very little into the community, sucking out big profits into the hands of a few.

Simply put, TESCO should leave, they have created a feeling of discontent in our beautiful area. If their PR team knows what is good for them, they will leave.

Try typing in 'NO TESCO' into google. You will start to see all the results found of all of the 'no TESCO' campaigns going on all over the country. Their near global monopoly on food production is by far the largest on the globe.

Stokes croft was doing just fine. Let stokes croft develop, don't develop stokes croft.

To whom it may concern.

I have a simple request. Recently as you will know you moved into the community of stokes croft in Bristol. With 41 stores already in the Bristol area, personally I think this is quite evidently enough. There is 5 tescos within 1 mile of the city centre, with one just down the road about 700m away: Jamaica street.

I don't have money to ask you to leave. If I did, I'd buy the plot of land from you and transform it into something that would really be beneficial to the community.

I love Bristol and Stokes Croft very much. Please understand that I am not anti supermarket. You are free to go about your business and to be honest, I feel that you have a place in the world, in the 21st century. With so many people to feed, the supermarket model most definitely has its benefits.

But please, I beg of you, please leave stokes croft. I'm really not sure how much more the community must ask you to leave. We have tried to talk with you and tell you that it is not wanted here, moreover, it is simply not required. I think there is an alternative. Rather than simply another Tescos store.

I'm very proud of the area and the community feel about the place is great.

I was very sad to see the streets that i love so much turn to such destruction. Tempers seemed to have exploded onto Bristols streets. I don't think we have seen such things for over 20 years. The paint still remains all over the road, as a reminder of what happened on that night.

I'm not saying that you are to blame. I'm not saying that you don't have a place. But what I plead of you with tears welling up in my eyes, is please leave us in peace.

You have Tescos all over the globe. Please all I ask of you, is just let us have a place which is not 'tescofied.' Just a bit.

Stokes Croft is a place which has a long history of social problems. Walking down the streets, you can still see it is evident. The rich/poor divide is getting bigger, but I know stokes croft to be grassroots. It is a place of rising conscienceness.

I don't know what more to say. All I ask of you Tescos, is for you to leave us in peace. Let stokes croft develop on it's own. I don't want to see scenes like that in a place I love so much again.

I'm not saying that you are to blame, because we should all be responsible for our own actions. But I do feel that you have had a very negative impact on the area. Please just leave quietly.

MY FIRST EMAIL TO STUART HOOK, RETURNING OFFICER FOR THIS YEARS UWESU ELECTIONS.

Basically, for those not in know, to make it a short story, rather than a long one, after the results were given out about the elections, I went to NERYS NEATH to discuss issues that I had with the democratic procedures of UWESU and of its elections. I happened to see a piece of paper, with different results on it, (COMPLETELY DIFFERENT NUMBERS)

I have video evidence of this, which I have not been able to access again, or based on 4 times of asking (a photocopy would be nice) of the piece of paper mysteriously found on Nerys Desk.

I am publishing these emails here, to hold UWESU to account, the people that we as a union employ and to ensure complete disclosure and transparency on issues that affect UWESU, its democracy and the future of higher education both here at UWE and more generally speaking. IN THE BELOW RESPONSE, FROM STUART HOOK - it describes how there was a problem with the voting system where numbers were mixed around. wehat this does not explain is how I have seen (and have video evidence of) a piece of paper with completely different numbers on, not just the wrong way round)

Hi Stuart, Hope all is well.

I have a few concerns with how the elections went this year, mainly concerning the democratic processes, and so I have a few questions that I have already tried to have answered, but to no avail thus far.

1. In previous years elections (namely the last two that I have stood in - 2009,2010) When results were given out, we were given the printouts straight from the E-cast voting system. This year we were handed hand written results that were in the envelopes written into an excel document grid. Why was this?

2. I also raised concerns with Nerys Neath early on in the week of elections -concerning the ability to vote for more than one campus chair. As I understand, when logging into vote, people were asked 'Which campus do you study on?' Where you would then choose your campus. You would then log out and then could log back in, where it would ask again 'which campus are you on' and you could then choose another campus and also vote for that one. a third time around, you could log in, again asking the same question and you could vote for the campus chair again. Why was this? And how does this effect the democratic procedures at UWESU elections?

3. At the elections results, I had doubts in my mind about the forthcoming results. As the above suggests there may have been holes in the deomocratic procedures that UWESU prides itself on. On Monday afternoon, (15 March 2010) I went to see Nerys Neath to discuss the above issues, where I was told that this could not be possible. I glanced across the desk and saw a set of results for the position that I stood for (VP Education) and asked if I could look at it. Nerys said yes, but replied that she was busy, so to be quick. I glanced over the pages, where I noticed that the figures on this particular copy found on Nerys Neath Desk were different to those handed out and published as to the finalised results. I asked Nerys for a photocopy of this, after noticing figures were different/incorrect, and Nerys declined saying that it was not possible.

4. Also, Nerys has told me that there was a paper count for the results this year. Firstly, why was this? Secondly, she claimed there was a paper count of the votes.

and I would suggest that a paper count under such circumstances would take substantially longer than the three and a half hours between the close of votes and the results being announced.

Since then Nerys Neath has described this election results paper (that I have been denied access to now) as a 'working document' I have asked to see this document a few times now and have been denied each time.

Why were the results different? Surely the numbers should be the same? Why Am I being denied a second look/photocopy of this piece of paper?

There is also more that I would like to discuss with you, possibly in person, as I am not completely happy to discuss this over email.

Please consider this email as an election complaint as per the formal complaint procedure, suggested on the UWESU election website.

Dear Paul,

I am sorry that you have some concerns about the election. I have provided my answers to your concerns below.

1 – Following the close of poll at every election, I inspect the vote calculations within the system as part of my role as Returning Officer in closing the polls and before declaring the verified results. This year, the vote quota was not working correctly following an amendment to a formula within the system. This is something we were already aware of prior to the closing of polls.

I must stress that the raw data of the votes cast was present and clearly displayed correctly but the system was using a winning quota of 100% of the vote whereas clearly it should have been 50% plus 1. I therefore calculated the count results manually and provided this information in the Excel tables which I chose to sign to provide candidates with a signed copy of the result.

2 – There was an error on the front facing part of the voting system that appeared to give the impression that you could vote for more than 1 campus chair. However, no “double” campus chair votes were registered and I am happy that the integrity of the election has not been effected.

3 – This appears to be a complaint about Nerys in her capacity as a member of staff and is not a matter for me as Returning Officer to consider

4 – I have discussed this point with Nerys. Nerys is clear that she did not say we conducted a paper count. For the avoidance of doubt, no paper count was conducted. However, I did undertake the count calculations as explained in 1 above.

You have asked questions about information which you have seen when looking at paperwork on Nery’s desk and what you believe to be discrepancies between results figures. It is possible that what you were looking at was the raw data as described in 1 above which would have shown different and incorrect vote quota’s.

You have asked if you can meet with me in person. All complaints must be submitted in writing in accordance with the complaints procedure and therefore I am unable to meet with you in person.

Can I please ask that you direct all correspondence through Nerys as explained during the candidates briefing and in the complaints procedure as I will be unable to answer any further e mails sent directly.

Just a quick message to say thank you to everyone who has sent me messages of support, advice and solidarity! It means so much at this time.

Right now, the police have succeeded in one thing that they may or may not have seeked to achieve. Right now, I feel extremely anxious and am scared to go back to my house. I don't think I have ever felt fear like this. My home is my home and now I no longer feel like I can go back there. I have been staying with good friends since last Friday when the police arrested me and searched my house. Such an intrusion into my private life and my home has left me feeling shaken up and really questioning the polices motives.

Like I said, I have done nothing wrong and their accusations have affected me in ways they do not know. The struggle continues. When I as sat in the cell that day, I really questioned myself: on whether standing up against this government and their savage cuts was worth it. That day sat in that cell, I gave up completely. I felt crushed, powerless and demoralised.

Looking back now, I feel stronger. The way the police treated me (the arm of the state) has now empowered me even more so, to fight against these cuts that will affect so many of us. I ask you as well, to do all you can to fight against these cuts in any way you can, spread the word and we will fight back in a peaceful way against this corrupt government. We are the people to do it.

Lets never give up hope, of building a fairer, more equal society. A society based on Peace, love solidarity and compassion. One that is understanding and tolerant. A society where the needs of all the people are met, not just the few of the worlds most powerful and richest people.

As I always say, education is a right, not a privilege. The protests led by the students so far, have proven that our generation is not apathetic. We will not simply roll over and let the government, big business and the banks ruin so many lives.

I am very lucky to be here today. Thanks to the Health care system, thanks to the education system and thanks to the welfare system, I am here today, building myself a life worth living. Once upon a time, I was admitted to a mental hospital. I have lots of people to thank for getting me to where I am today. People who care about other people, rather than simply themselves. Caring people helped me rebuild my life and it makes me very sad to hear of the governments plans to cut and slash the services that offered me a step up, to enable me to rebuild my life. It makes me sad to think of all the people who won't be able to access the same help that I got.
