We really care about cultivating talent–especially the talent of writers, artists, and creative thinkers. One thing we know for sure is that natural talent needs inspiration and motivation to develop the skills required to make professional dreams happen. So if you want to be a great writer, you must write. If you want to be a great artist, do the design work you love. If you want to be a terrific speaker, talk!

It helps to develop creative skills in an environment that is steeped with passion. Authentic passion exists in abundance at nonprofits. We know that some of the best stories in the world are unfolding now behind the walls of the nonprofits that care for our community. These stories need to be told in words, in art, in video, in speeches.

Creative talent is embraced by nonprofits. Passion is what causes creative talent to grow. Nonprofit Heroes serves as a bridge between the creative community and the nonprofit community. You’ll find business articles for both communities at our website www.PRTherapy.com.

LEE’S SUMMIT, Missouri – Right now it’s illegal to buy tobacco under the age of 18 in Lee’s Summit. But the city ordinance says nothing about possessing tobacco or using it.

“As a police officer it’s frustrating because you will see a kid walk by that is clearly not old enough to smoke but they are smoking a cigarette right in front of you but as the law stands, there is absolutely nothing you can do about it,” said Lee’s Summit Officer Beth Glover.

So some community members are trying to change the law. Lee’s Summit CARES the local non-profit group that works to promote healthy kids is one of the big advocates.

“We don’t want kids to be arrested we just want them to stop smoking,” said the group’s executive director, Roby Little. “So if there is a policy change, will there be a behavior change?”

The proposed ordinance prohibits minors from possessing tobacco products as well as buying it.

Lee’s Summit CARES says the purpose of the ordinance is to help decrease tobacco use by teens and tweens.

They claim, since 90 percent of smokers begin to use tobacco before the age of 20, each effort to prevent this use could help prevent lifelong tobacco use.

They also tell NBC Action News a recent student survey reported that 38.8 percent of Lee’s Summit High school seniors in the graduating class of 2010 smoke.

Under the proposed ordinance, the toughest penalty is $100 fine.

For more on the proposed ordinance, check out this website.

It is Missouri state law that you cannot possess tobacco under 18 years of age, so any Class A licensed officer can confiscate and destroy the tobacco; they just can’t send them to city court. This group is hoping to have the city code mirror the state statue.

We can help you understand how to leverage publicity to help your nonprofit grow.

Top 3 Reasons Nonprofit Leaders Are Afraid to Tackle PR

1. “Nobody On Staff Knows How or When to Contact the Media” PR does include outreach to the traditional media, but it really encompasses much more than calling up the local newspaper or morning news team. Focus your efforts on sharing your news and telling your stories of success on your own website, blog, or through social media channels. When you do, chances are the media will find you.

2. “Twitter Doesn’t Make Sense.” Social Media tools like Twitter, Facebook, and LinkedIn are just the latest communications tools to connect with your audience. If you are unclear about who your audience is, the tools simply don’t make sense. Focus on who you need to reach and the opportunities available to reach them, and soon you will recognize that social media stands out as a free tool that can make your job easier.

3. “Too Busy to Do Another Thing.” Your job actually depends on doing PR. People need to know what your organization does and how it helps. If you are too busy to tell the community what you do and why it matters, don’t be surprised when member of the community are too busy to support your efforts.
