Here is something I designed some months ago for a site called SplitReason. The design is a take on a classic Scarface quote. I’m quite proud of this as it’s a first for something I’ve designed or created.. Just like a newborn baby or something. I’m thinking about framing it. I was awarded $250US and given a shirt with my design on it.

This is an awesome perspective of the reactions of customers when they’re confronted by a video camera on a Sushi Train in Japan.

January 25th, 2009, marked the date for the beginning of the Road to Wrestlemania, the first stop was the Royal Rumble. 30 combatants enter the ring at 90 second intervals with the intention of being the last person standing in the middle of the ring at the end of the contest. They achieve that by throwing their opponents over the top rope and both of their feet hitting the floor. The winner gets a main-event match at Wrestlemania 25.

The PPV kicked off with an awesome video promo of previous Rumble winners, then cutting to great heel footage of Randy Orton from last week’s Monday Night Raw. Randy Orton is a great superstar and an awesome stable leader. I hope for damn sure that he’ll be coming down to Melbourne in July for the WWE Raw Live tour.

The first match of the night was Matt Hardy vs Jack Swagger for the ECW title. I don’t watch ECW, so this was perhaps the 2nd time I’ve seen Jack Swagger in action, who was also holding the ECW title. He seems to be a good overall wrestler, like a young Kurt Angle. Coined as the All-American American, he eventually retained the title with a gutwrench powerbomb on Hardy.

The next match was for the Women’s Championship. Probably not the most entertaining division for some, but this was a matchup between two of the top wwe women superstars, Melina and Beth Phoenix. It looked to me as though Melina had been studying Rey Mysterio’s DVD, with moves such as the one I like to call the ‘Tilt-a-Whirl Hurricanrana Crossface Holy-Shit-How-The-Fuck-Did-That-Just-Happen?!’. At one point the Glamazon was using Melina’s flexibility against her and was beating the back of her head with her own foot. Melina won the match and the Title with a reverse on the Glamzon’s ‘Glam Slam’ for a pin.

Now for a match I was waiting for the outcome for, the World Heavyweight Championship match between John Cena (title holder) and JBL with HBK in his corner. One could only wonder what Shawn was thinking, would he take a shot at Cena or turn on his employer, JBL? The referee copped an unintentional boot from JBL, which was the chance for HBK to do his bidding. He was eyeing off Cena and JBL as they lay on the mat. JBL arose first, motioning for HBK to give Sweet Chin Music to Cena. HBK then turned to JBL and gave him a swift kick to the chin. Cena realised what had happened and was happy that HBK had done the right thing, which was when Cena received a swift one for his troubles. As both Cena and JBL lay motionless on the mat, HBK pulled JBL’s arm across Cena for a pin before leaving the ring and heading backstage. With the referee still knocked out outside the ring, a second ref came flying in from the back to do the pin. It was all but over when Cena lifted his shoulder off the mat at a count of 2 and a half. They both rose to their feet, when Cena caught JBL for the win. A top match with the usual twists and turns.

Another match I was looking forward to was the battle between Jeff Hardy and Edge for the WWE Championship, which Hardy was currently holding. Vickie Guererro the GM of Smackdown came out and made it a No-DQ match. There were some awesome spots in this match, one big spot with Hardy slipping off the top of the ladder, splashing onto Chavo on the Announcers table. A HOLY SHIT moment which was uglier than it should have been. With Edge lying in the middle of the ring and Hardy about to hit the Swanton Bomb, Vickie came out and stopped Hardy from doing it and then stopping a pin count. Jeff’s brother Matt came down to the ring and tossed Vickie into the ring. Matt then called for the Conchairto on Edge. Matt brought in 2 chairs to set up, then turned and smashed Jeff over the head with the chair. So Matt was behind all of the previous incidents involving Jeff, unbeknownst to Edge.. Edge took advantage of the situation and pinned Hardy for the win and the Championship.

Finally it was time for the Royal Rumble match. Once again Rey Mysterio was one of the first two entrants, staying in the match before being eliminated by the Big Show in 49:24. A big factor was the team of the Legacy headed by Randy Orton dominating the match. They managed to toss out 3 big name players, at one point Cody Rhodes eliminating his older brother Goldust (Dustin Rhodes). Orton hit a countless number of RKOs, it was obvious who was destined to win the match. The final four were HHH against the Legacy. HHH eliminated DiBiase and Rhodes, Orton came up from behind and flipped HHH over the ropes to win the 22nd Royal Rumble.

I haven’t watched the aftermath on Monday Night Raw yet, so let’s see what conspires now that Orton has a ticket to Wrestlemania and the luming fine or suspension waiting for him after last weeks incident with Vince McMahon.

For the Cena vs JBL match I had expected JBL to win the title with an assist by HBK. In turn having HBK enter the Rumble at number 30 only to win and and face JBL at Wrestlemania for a Boss vs Employee match. That could still happen, though there isn’t much at stake.. but dignity of course.

Internet rumours had led me to believe that Christian was behind all of the Jeff Hardy incidents. That would have been great. To see Christian and Edge back together again would be a dream. His contract has ended with TNA and his return to the WWE is luming. I’m pretty sure I heard the crowd chant ‘We want Christian’ at the beginning of the match when Hardy was trying to get his own chant going. Oh well. I assume this will no doubt lead to a Hardy vs Hardy match or the long shot of Jeff & Christian vs Edge & Matt.

It totally blew my mind when RVD entered. I hope it isn’t just a one time deal. He is obviously a fan favourite.

Orton winning the Rumble was a given. Who is bigger right now, really? He is the heel who you just can’t help but cheer for, he is the total package. With the new 10 year contract offered to him, we’ll seeing him around for a long long time. I’m glad Vince and the WWE are banking behind him.

Overall I think it was possibly one of the best Royal Rumbles I have seen. When there are moments you cannot predict accompanied with jaw dropping moments, that’s a recipe for a great PPV. The Rumble just so happens to be one of my favourite PPVs of the year.

For my first ever review I will give this 4½ out of 5 possible stars.

Purely based on the fact I totally expected Christian to return and much more to come from it if JBL won, RVD was still a great suprise though.
