We got updates!

First and foremost, big thanks you to all who donated to pay for the hosting! I don’t thank everyone individually not because I’m lazy but because I’m not sure what the proper etiquette is. So, once again, thank you!

Secondly, yes, that’s right – updates. All Gems got updated to the latest version and Merb made it to the list. If you know of any Gems you think should be included here, please let me know.

A hero by the name of John Leach pointed out that Ruby Core and Library were 1.9 instead of mentioned 1.8.6. That’s what you get when you point to the trunk instead of a proper version tag.

Finally, here’s a little treat for those who are just interested in searching Rails and Ruby documentation: rails.noobkit.com. It even looks familiar!

Rails 2.0.1 is in da house!!!!111

You might be asking yourself, how long does it take to check in 108,000 files into SVN? What’s that? You aren’t? Well, I’m still telling you – about 2 hours and twice that to check them out on a remote server. Don’t try this at home!

Now that this is done, I can update Noobkit’s repository from SVN, isn’t that exciting? And to celebrate this completely pointless effort I’ve decided to use that time to update Rails EDGE to the now released Rails 2.0.1.

Now the good news!

A few heroes have donated enough to pay for the first month of hosting! I thank you very much (no jokes here). Keep it up! Your names will forever be in my heart and Google’s cache!

And the bad news…

Few heroes have donated just barely enough to pay for the first month of hosting. More love needed!

Back to you Diane.

ZOMG Noobkit 2.0

ZOMG, no really!

It’s finally happening and it feels weird. After 4 months and a few hundred hours of work, Noobkit 2.0 is going live. No “beta” tags here, nope. It’s just live, complete and working or at least such is the plan.

The new version is a complete rewrite. Most of the ground work went into the new file based repository to pave the way for Wiki editing, which, when complete, could be the most awesome thing.

On the surface, there’s a much neater interface with some extra UI sugar sprinkled here and there. The icons were “borrowed” the wonderful NetBeans IDE (hopefully they don’t mind) and the ugly API tree was replaced with a sleek OSX style hierarchal panel.

The biggest improvement is addition of Rails Edge as was promised quite some time ago. Whenever you search for Rails related stuff you most likely will be getting two hits—one for latest stable release and one for Edge.

However, not everything is well. I had to change the URLs which are now unique identifiers for each page. This means that Google search results will be broken for a little while and that your bookmarks couldn’t be carried over without laborious one-by-one manually performed task.

Noobkit needs you!

That’s it, no more banners! This means two things—better looking pages for you (yay) and no more money to support hosting for Noobkit (nay). This is why Noobkit needs some love from you and for that, there’s a Pledgie page set up to accept all kinds of kindness converted into hard currency. Said kindness will go toward hosting needs and will help with new features (Noobkit is a total blast, but when it comes to paying mortgage, however unfortunate but the choice is obvious).

So, enjoy the new Noobkit, don’t forget to say hi and maybe thanks :)
