INDORE: In another twist to a ragging controversy over the woman jail inmate, who was found pregnant in one report and not in the second one, MY Hospital superintendent said both reports were correct. Talking to media here on Monday, MYH Superintendent Dr P S Thakur said, "Both reports, including the first report in which the woman inmate was found pregnant and the second report wherein the doctors found she was not pregnant-- were correct."

After the first report, the MYH superintendent set up a board of five doctors on October 22, which declared that the woman is not pregnant. However, Dr Thakur did not divulge other details saying, "I have received facts and will give my reply to the court." Pleading anonymity, an expert in the field, said Dr Thakur's statement clearly indicated that the pregnancy was terminated on the MYH premises.

Whether it was forced or due to natural reason, it is to be found out, he added. Jhabua collector Jaishree Kiyawat, who has been assigned the responsibility of conducting a probe into the issue by the DG jail said, "I have received the opinion of the divisional medical board and have forwarded the same to the probe panel which is investigating the matter.

The panel has been given three weeks' time." On the order of the district court, a jail inmate from Jhabua, who was serving term for the past 10 months, was brought to MYH's mental hospital on September 10. During the medical check-up at the mental hospital on October 16, doctors found the woman has five-week pregnancy. After hue and cry, MYH superintendent set up a board of five doctors which was supposed to examine the matter. The board concluded that she is not pregnant.

A third divisional bench, constituted in the wake of contradictory reports, was believed to have reported that the woman was not pregnant.

Ragging at MANET: Four students held, released on bail

The Loni Kalbhor police on Saturday arrested four students ofMaharashtra Academy of Naval Education and Training (MANET) for allegedly ragging one of their classmates for the last six months. The suspects were produced before the court which granted them bail on Saturday.

Although the official FIR invoked section 4 of the anti-ragging regulations of the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), MANET’s executive director Mangesh Karad said that it was not a case of ragging. According to the FIR, Amitkumar Anilkumar Sharma (22), a native of Bihar, was allegedly ragged by Sourabh Anil Kharat (21), Akshay Rajendra According to the FIR, Amitkumar Anilkumar Sharma (22), a native of Bihar, was allegedly ragged by Sourabh Anil Kharat (21), Akshay Rajendra Dhambhare (21), Somay Surendra Sable (21) and Nitin Laxman Maharnoor (23), all second-year students of BSc nautical sciences.

On Friday night, around 11, Sharma had allegedly consumed poison at his hostel room on the campus and had named the suspects in his suicide note. The note stated that the suspects had been harassing him for the last six months and had driven him to take the extreme step. Sharma was rushed to Noble Hospital and was discharged on Sunday. The police also said that the suspects used to tease Sharma by linking his name with other girls, which he found objectionable.

However, Karad said that this was not a case of ragging. “This action of the police was wrong as we have an anti-ragging committee and Sharma should have approached the committee. Sharma had got into trouble with outsiders. After his quarrel, he had asked his friends to get even with the outsiders. But since they did not help him much, he has implicated them in a false ragging case.

Sharma never approached the disciplinary committee nor has he directly approached the police,” Karad said. Karad also said that the college had informed the parents of the student for further action.

MBAs cry ragging, but Amity in denial

Two first year MBA students of Amity University have accused a group of seniors of beating them up for not addressing them as "sir". Police and the university have denied it was ragging. Sachin Chauhan and his brother, Amit Chauhan, who live in Sector 48 here, had gone to meet the director when they were beaten up on Monday.

"When we were waiting for our turn, 10 of our seniors came. They took us to a corner and asked us to call them 'sir'," said Sachin. "When we refused, they started beating us up. No one came to our rescue. Faculty members watched from a distance but didn't intervene," he alleged. Security guards and friends broke up the fight. Sachin called police but by then the group had fled.

The police took the two to the district hospital, where Sachin was given five stitches to the forehead. Amit's face has been bruised. The police have registered a case but not of ragging. SP Yogesh Singh accepted that the two were beaten up for not addressing seniors as 'sir' but said it was not ragging. The university took the same line. "This is not a case of ragging. The brawl started between two groups while practicing for a mega sporting event to be held Tuesday," spokesperson Savita Mehta said.

It was a minor dispute and a student had been suspended, she said, adding a panel would look into the matter. Ragging is banned across the country and government has said it should be dealt with sternly.

4 students suspended for 'ragging'

Ludhiana, October 26 Four students of the College of Nursing of Christian Medical College (CMC) allegedly took sedatives after they were suspended for six months by the Principal for their alleged involvement in a quarrel with a student.

However, the police has confirmed that it had received a complaint of ragging from the student. The four BSc second-year students have been identified as Danial, Michal, Sahil and Suraj. They were taken to the CMC after they allegedly fell unconscious. According to the hospital authorities, the students were out of danger. Brij Mohan, SHO, Division No. 3 police station, while confirming the development, said he had received a complaint from a student, Deepak, stating that he had been subjected to ragging.

However, Sister Panama, Principal of the College of Nursing, ruled out that the students were involved in ragging. "I want to make it clear that the four students who were suspended today were not involved in ragging. Instead, they were involved in a quarrel with another student. During an internal inquiry, the four students were found guilty and action was taken against them.

Their parents were asked to report at the college. However, the parents refused to accept the suspension letter of their wards and threatened to drag the college authorities to court. Later, I came to know that the four students consumed sedatives and were reportedly taken to a hospital." Not ruling out foul play, Sister Panama said it could be a tactic by the students to exert pressure on the college authorities.

The suspended students did not speak on the issue. Sources said the incident took place five days ago when the four students allegedly "hurled comments" at Deepak in a hostel. Deepak reported the matter to the college authorities. The college authorities formed a committee to probe the matter. Deepak also lodged a complaint with the police.

Mayur Gupta of architecture dept allegedly joined a group of students in ragging a first-year student A faculty member at M S University of Baroda was on Saturday arrested for allegedly ragging, along with senior students of his department, a junior student on the campus, police said.

“Prof Mayur Gupta of the Department of Architecture was apprehended on charges of ragging first-year student Harshvardan Sutariya on the campus,” Sayajigunj Police Inspector A B Saiyed said. “We have recorded statements of officials of the architecture department as the part of investigations and arrested Gupta under sections 342 (punishment for wrongful confinement), 143 (punishment for being a member of unlawful assembly), 203 (K) (giving false information respecting an offence committed) of Indian Penal Code (IPC),” he said.

The incident came to light after Harshvardhan’s father Ramesh Murar Sutariya filed a complaint with police two days ago. Police said a video clip showing the ragging incident involving Gupta and senior students, including a girl, was submitted by the complainant, besides other documents including recordings of conversations on Harshvardhan’s mobile phone. Besides Gupta, five students Parth Patel, Nirmal Shah, Vivek Panchal, Kunal Patel and Nisha Panchal are also named in the complaint, Saiyed said. According to police, Harshvardhan’s seniors asked him to perform “obscene” acts on the campus.

Nagpur News: In a case that has highlighted administrative apathy towards ragging in the city, Nidhi Yadav, a third year medical college student at Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) has her hand wrapped in bandages thanks to alleged bullying and manhandling by her senior, Rahul Khambalkar.

The incident took place on Saturday, over a minor misunderstanding about a comment on social networking site Facebook. Despite repeated complaints by her parents and classmates, the college administration has allegedly done nothing beyond promising the setting up of a committee to inquire into the matter. It has almost been a week since the incident, and no action has been taken.

The Ajni police have also been dragging its steps, having refrained from filing an FIR till Friday afternoon. “We were told that no case could be filed till we submit a medical report proving the harassment”, said Mrs. Vidya Yadav, the victim’s mother, “The casualty department of the college, where she was taken after the incident, has not given us a report yet.

We tried to get in touch with the doctor who checked her, but in vain”. The helpless parents then sought the help of the Nagpur wing of National Students Union of India (NSUI). The NSUI took the victim’s parents to Ajni police station yet again to file a complaint, and also called in the local media. “With UCN and Sahara Samay covering the news, the police finally conceded to file an FIR this afternoon”, NSUI officials told Nagpur Today,

“We questioned the GMCH administration’s need to constitute a fresh committee, since each college is already supposed to have an anti- ragging committee in place. Our questions were left unanswered”. Nagpur Today is in possession of the complaint letter given to the college Dean on Tuesday. The letter has been signed by fifteen of Nidhi’s BPMT batchmates. The letter has clearly had no impact on the college administration. The hospital’s Public Relations Officer (MBBS Department) categorically denied any knowledge of the incident.

LUCKNOW: Three students of Government Ayurvedic College, Talkatora Road were booked by the police on Thursday, for allegedly ragging their junior students. The incident was reported to local Bazarkhala police station following which a case was lodged, and Vikas Chowdhary (2006 batch), Upendra Nath (2008 batch) and Shashikant (2006 batch) have been charged under Section 5 of the Prevention of Ragging Act. The complainant of the case is Ujjwal Shivhare, a first year student of the college residing at the student hostels situated on the campus. Shivhare had alleged that he had been ragged earlier by the same, trio but he had ignored the matter.

According to police the three seniors who too happen to be hostellers, supposedly abused and teased their juniors on regular basis. On Thursday the matter took an ugly turn when they slapped Shivhare and asked him to stand on the bench for hours. Shivhare was supported by 16 more students of his batch who also told the police about the menace.

The three seniors in their defence claimed that the incident had been overplayed and their acts were not as extreme in nature as they have been made out to be in the police complaint. Meanwhile, the police said that investigations will be carried out in the matter and if required, the students will be arrested.

KURUKSHETRA: The management of Sri Krishna Ayurvedic College on Monday placed a senior BAMS student for allegedly forcing juniors to dance after disrobing themselves in the hostel. Identified as Chetan Yadav, a resident of Mahendergarh district, the student has been barred from attending the classes.

The college authorities are in the process of identifying others who accompanied Chetan during the Saturday night incident, sources said. Eight juniors -- Ravinder Saini, Sumit Saini, Amit, Gaurav, Rajguru, Mukteshwar, Pankaj and Dinesh -- had lodged a complaint against Chetan before the college authorities. According to complainant students, Chetan had managed to escape from the hostel before police could reach the hostel on getting a call in the anti-ragging cell.

"We had a called up anti-ragging cell of police when seniors started troubling us. Police did come, but he managed to escape from the hostel,'' an aggrieved student said. College principal V V Chhikara remained inaccessible for media. Hostel warden Surender Sehrawat however confirmed the suspension of Chetan Yadav. "The principal is out of station. We can only say that the college has suspended a student, against whom a ragging complaint was received,'' said Sehrawat.

He, however, expressed inability to comment further. Kuruksehtra SP Rakesh Arya confirmed the incident, but maintained that police have not got any complaint so far. "Our SHO had visited the spot. No case was registered as neither the victim students nor the college authorities lodged any formal complaint against anybody regarding the incident,'' said Arya.

6 students expelled for ragging

The students were informed about their expulsion following an inquiry committee report which found them guilty.

College chairman, B N Chaudhary, said, "Out of the six students, two have been debarred for a period of one year while the rest four have been asked not to appear for the next semester examination." Mohit Kumar and Abhay Kumar, residents of Jamshedpur, Prashant Kumar, resident of Khunti district, Rajendra Murmu of Bokaro district, Abhishek Kumar of Giridih and Keshav Kumar of West Champaran district (Bihar) have been expelled from the college.

They have been expelled following the October 4 incident in which Rakesh Gupta, a first year mechanical engineering student, was hospitalized after he was assaulted and ragged by a group of second year students within the college premises. Subsequent to the incident, Gupta, a resident of Jamshedpur, lodged an FIR against the accused students at the Galudih police station and also registered a complaint with the Anti-Ragging Cell (ARC) in Delhi. Following the ARC directive, the college conducted an internal inquiry and found six students guilty .

The college authorities also said that the six students have been asked to vacate the college hostel with immediate effect. "Tough action will alone deter the students from indulging in such activities in the future," said a college faculty.

The police arrested four B.Tech second year students on charges of ragging and attacking their juniors at a shopping mall at Maddilapalem in Visakhapatnam on Wednesday night.

Inspector of III Town Police Station J Lakshmana Murthy said a group of six B.Tech second year students came to CMR Central shopping mall in the city last night and found their juniors of around ten persons shopping. Irate that their juniors also came to the same mall, senior students forcibly took cash from the juniors and fled the mall.

Acting on a complaint lodged by victims, the police arrested four second-year students on charges of ragging. A case has been registered against the students under Section 4 of the Andhra Pradesh Prohibition of Ragging Act, 1997. The police produced the accused students at the Fourth Additional Chief Metropolitan court today, where the judge dismissed their bail petition.

Assam college takes action againt 16 students for ragging

Guwahati : Acting strictly against ragging, a college in Assam's Barpeta district Thursday expelled 16 students from its hostel for torturing junior students in the guise of ragging, college officials said. Authorities of the Baushi Banikanta Kakati College, located at Nagaon area, have also dismissed three college staff and suspended the superintendent of the college hostel for not taking the matter seriously when informed by the victims.

The Barpeta police is likely to register a case in the incident. "Junior students of the hostel - the new comers - were subjected to severe mental as well as physical torture in the boys hostel by the seniors. However, on Sunday it reached peak when the senior students tonsured the head of eight boarders," said a senior teacher. Although the parents of the victim students intimated this to the hostel superintendent, yet nothing was done, the teacher added.

On Monday the victim students and their parents informed the local media of the incident. The parents condemned the incident as the Hindus tonsure their heads only when their parents die and complained that the senior students hurt their religious sentiments. "The Governing Body of the college instituted a three-member inquiry committee immediately, which submitted its report today (Thursday). Based on the inquiry report, all the 16 senior boarders of the college hostel were expelled from the hostel.

Three other staff of the college including two hostel cooks have also been discharged from their duties today," said a senior faculty member. "The superintendent of the college hostel K.P. Baruah was also discharged from his post as he did not take action against the erring students even though the victims brought the matter to his notice," said the faculty member.

Barpeta's Superintendent of Police G.V. Shivaprasad said that police came to know about the incident through media reports. "The college authorities have not informed police of the matter. However, I have already sent my officers to gather the information about the case," he said and added that even if the college does not register a complaint, police will file itself file a case regarding the incident. "Ragging is a cognizable offence and we are not going to leave it," said the SP.

Jadavpur University student quits after severe ragging

An engineering student of the Jadavpur University has filed a police complaint, alleging he had to leave the university because of severe ragging at the hands of senior students in the hostel where he was staying.

Siddhanta Mundra, a second year student of mechanical engineering, said in the FIR lodged with the Kandi police station in Murshidabad district, where he resides, that he could hardly attend classes because of torture inflicted on him. Kandi IC Sunoyon Basu on Thursday confirmed having received the complaint on October 1.

Mundra stated in the FIR that as he was even forced to take drugs, he shifted to a private mess from the hostel. But his ordeal did not stop there, he complained, as he was threatened with dire consequences. The student's father Ramesh Chandra Mundra said that his son had even received a threat letter at the mess and that he was at the beck and call of senior students.

Dean of Jadavpur university Rajat Roy said Mundra did not inform the authorities before leaving. However, Roy said, "But we want him back in the university. He is a meritorious student. The university authorities will do everything to support him. All he has to do is come to us."

Roy also advised the student's father to lodge a complaint with the university and register a general diary at the Jadavpur police station. The father, however, alleged that he had gone to the Jadavpur police station, but his complaint was not registered. Even the university authorities refused to accept any written complaint, he added.

AU students expelled on ragging charges

Ten senior students of Allahabad University were expelled on Tuesday for an alleged ragging incident, which involved them making a video clip of juniors by forcing them to perform sexual acts with puffed dolls and sit-ups. The central university has also forwarded a report to the police for registration of FIR against the accused students.

The incident occurred in the A.N. Jha hostel on 3 October, 2012 and came into light past midnight on Monday when some first year inmates handed out the recorded clip to the media. According to hostel inmates, they were forced to perform unwarranted tasks and use foul language, while being mentally harassed. A senior student who had guided the ragging victims to lodge a complaint with the hostel administration was allegedly also roughed up by his batch mates.

The inmates add that since the administration did not take any action then, they decided to approach the media and police. However, according to University authorities, the accused 2 and 3 year students were suspended from the hostel and given show cause notices by the superintendent on Monday night.

Proctor Mata Amber Tiwari told The Hindu that action was taken immediately after the matter came into their knowledge and the guilty students had been suspended for a year with immediate effect after a decision by the Proctoral board and Dean of Student Welfare.

Mr. Tiwari added if the expelled students were to get re-admitted in future, they would be denied admission into any hostel run by the University or its Trust. Warden Sanjoy Saxena said the incident could be a fallout of the recently concluded Allahabad University Students’ Union elections and inquiries were on to ascertain the identity of the students “actually involved in the ragging.”

“It’s an act of chicanery, to defame this reputed hostel and get even over their loss in the elections. We still cannot ascertain whether the students involved were bonafide students or outsiders,” said Mr. Saxena. According to inmates, the hostel would be frequented by members of some student outfits and the juniors would have difficulty to identity who the actual “seniors” were.

High court issues notice to CMC principal

LUDHIANA: Taking cognizance of a petition filed by a suspended warden and assistant professor of Christian Medical College and Hospital (CMCH), here, the Punjab and Haryana high court issued a notice of motion for November 2 to the college principal. A 150-page petition under Article 226/227 was filed by Dr Robert James on October 4 wherein he said the CMC administration ignored his complaint of ragging in boys' hostel and that instead of acting against the accused boys, the principal and the administration suspended him from his duties of warden of Ross Boys' Hostel.

On September 5, Dr James had raised the ragging issue in the media. He had said that a few senior students and members of the student council ragged junior medical students of the hostel under the pretext of orientation programme and misbehaved with him too. He added that he had submitted a written complaint against two boys to principal Dr S M Bhatti and the governing body, but it went unheeded. He then reported the July 25 matter to the senior functionaries, but still no action was taken.

The college management, however, said after the wardenship was taken away from him, he started making the allegations. They added that the junior students never complained of ragging in the hostel.

Engineering diploma student alleges ragging

AMBALA: A student of diploma in engineering in a private polytechnic on Friday accused his seniors of ragging by disrobing him under the garb of introduction session in institute premises in Mullana township of Ambala.

In his complaint lodged with Mullana police station, the victim, a student of Shivalik Polytechnic, also accused senior students, studying in final year of various branches of engineering, of thrashing him and making casteist remarks when he resisted their pressure on Friday. "The seniors have forced me to take off pants four times in the recent past.

I was forced to lodge the complaint as things went to extreme levels today," the victim said in his complaint. "Fear of parents, who would have asked me to stay back at home, forced me to tolerate the wrongs by seniors for a long time,", the victim told this reporter, while referring to reasons for delay in filing the complaint. When contacted, inspector Ranbir Singh, station house officer (SHO) of Mullana police station, confirmed receipt of the complaint. "Currently, we are in Naraingarh for election duty in connection with Youth Congress elections.

My colleagues have discussed the complaint with me. We have started investigations and appropriate action will follow," he said. Principal of the polytechnic, N K Puri, however expressed ignorance about the incident. "We have not received any complaint from the victim or his family members so far. We observe zero tolerance towards incidents like ragging. Secondly, we are duty-bound to take action following court orders in this regard," he said.

Hisar ragging: Student thrashed, ends up in hospital

Hisar: A student of second year, Civil Diploma course in Shivalik Sikshan Sansthan, Hisar has alleged that he was subjected to ragging.

Ravindra Kumar has complained that his seniors misbehaved with him ever since he enrolled in the course. Kumar claims that he complained to the authorities in his institute but no action was taken. Talking to Bhaskar News, Kumar said he hails from a poor family and he lost his father in 2010.

He tolerated his seniors’ bad behavior towards him as he didn’t want to disrupt studies, he further said. On Thursday, Kumar was writing his session papers when he received a call asking him to come downstairs. When he went downstairs, a student took him outside the college on a bike. There, Kumar was surrounded by around a dozen students who thrashed him. Ravindra has told police that the students abused him and called him caste-names.

He fell unconscious and Kumar’s friends took him to a nearby hospital when they found him. Ravindra said earlier, he has been asked to pull down his trousers several times in the college.

Engineering student attempts suicide, alleges ragging by seniors

DURGAPUR, 4 OCT: A first-year engineering student allegedly attempted suicide because of ragging by four seniors. After receiving complaints from the college authorities, police have begun investigating. None of the accused has been arrested yet.

Mr Pintu Majumdar, student at a private college in Raniganj, had lodged a complaint through the National Anti-Ragging Cell’s toll-free number in New Delhi last Saturday. The Cell sought an explanation from the college authorities on Wednesday.

The college immediately lodged a complaint with police. Mr Majumdar, a resident of Ghola in North 24-Parganas alleged that four third-year students ~ Mr Pronoy Das, Mr Bappa Ghanti, Mr Sourabh Karmakar and Mr Snehasis Ghosh ~ had been mentally and physically torturing him for the past few days.

Varanasi: As many as seven students of Electrical Engineering at Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Banaras Hindu University (BHU) have been barred from attending classes and their registrations have been cancelled for the current semester over ragging charges.

The Anti-Ragging Committee of IIT BHU found Harsh Kumar Lath, Rishabh Mishra, Rahul Mishra, Manish Jindal, Harshit Gupta, Ashish Yadav and Sahil Sirohi of Dhanrajgiri hostel guilty of being involved in a well-planned case of ragging. Prateek Mukhija, a first year student of Electrical Engineering had on September 11 registered a complaint regarding ragging on the mobile phone of the chairman of Anti-Ragging Squad.

The students who were found involved in the case have also been suspended from the hostel for the current semester while a penalty of Rs 5,000 has been imposed on each of them. They will also be barred from academic privileges such as sitting for campus interviews.

The West Bengal National University of Juridical Sciences (NUJS), Kolkata recently banned a third-year student from representing the school in any sort of extracurricular and external activities this academic year, after allegations of ragging shook the school again.

A first-year law student and his parents had complained against this particular senior back in July, saying that he has made the junior bring him food and make unnecessary speeches.

The NUJS authorities, including NUJS Vice Chancellor Ishwara Bhatt and three faculty members had started an inquiry after receiving the complaints.

In August, the senior apologized in writing, which made the junior withdraw his complaint. The inquiry committee however continued with the investigation and finally decided to take this step against the senior. GyanCentral had reported against alleged ragging at law schools before this, but nobody came out in the open to confirm it.

When GyanCentral spoke to registrar of NUJS, Dr.Surajit C Mukhopadhyay, he confirmed the news..

Allegations of ragging in NUJS and few other law schools were made me sometime in July this year. While some juniors anonymously agreed about it, some completely refuted the claims.

It all began with a drunken brawl at a college in Vidyarananyapura on Thursday. A student got injured and filed a police complaint on the same day. His rival filed a counter complaint at a different police station on Friday, accusing him of ragging. It took some time for the police to sift through the confusion.

Rahul Kumar Singh, 19, studying first year BBM lodged a complaint at Vidyarananyapura police station that his seniors had ragged him. He said they were forcing him to strip and when he objected, he was stabbed with a screw driver and beaten.

Vidyaranyapura police inspector BP Prasad said they initially believed him and registered a case of assault, ragging and also criminal intimidation against another student, identified as Praveen Kumar.

Singh had also created an alibi, identified as Sanjay, and stated that he too was forced by the the accused to do the same.

A team of officials swung into action and nabbed the accused for questioning. The whole incident turned out to be a farce when the ‘accused’ informed them that he was in fact the victim and had already filed a case with New Yelahanka Town police.

After contacting their counterparts at Yelahanka, they realised thatRahul has filed a false complaint and have decided to take legal action in this regard.

Case against 5 law students for assault

Five students of the Government Law College here have been booked for allegedly assaulting one of their juniors using stones and other weapons near the college campus, during an alleged ragging session.

Based on a complaint from second-year student C Raja (19), Vadavalli police registered a case against five of his seniors under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), on Thursday. However, the anti-ragging Act was not invoked in this incident.

“The complainant says that he was hit with stones by five of his seniors as he did not salute them and refused to give them money.

However, there was already a conflict between two groups of students in the college and we are investigating the complaint to ascertain its veracity,” a police officer here said.

The five students were identified as Eswaran, Alaguraja, Manoharan, Chelladurai and Malarmannan. Police were yet to arrest them.

“Recently, a security guard of the college and a hotelier near the campus was beaten up by a few students.

The students also ransacked the roadside hotel. Owing to this, there was an enmity between two groups of students and we are probing whether the latest complaint is only to settle scores between them or it was genuine,” police sources said.

Meanwhile, shopkeepers and hoteliers near the campus have decided to stage a one-day hunger strike on Saturday at the Marudhamalai bus terminus, condemning the alleged assault on the hotel by the law college students.

The Museum Police have registered a case of ragging, on the basis of a complaint submitted by a first year LLB student of the Government Law College here against SFI activists.

An FIR was filed after S S Vishnu, a dalit student submitted a complaint through the college principal, alleging that he was subjected to physical assault and verbal abuse by a group of SFI activists senior to him, after he refused to contribute Rs 500 as demanded.

The complaint says that the activists snatched Rs 100 from him. He was directed to pay the rest of the demanded money, but on finding that it was not forth coming, he was attacked, it is alleged.

Indore: Two students have been suspended from hostel for their involvement in the ragging case of first year management student of Institute of Management Studies (IMS) on Saturday.

Just a day after the ragging incident of first IMS student was reported to Devi Ahilya Vishwa Vidyalaya (DAVV), the proctorial board of the university suspended Dhanendra Phalavi (IMS) and Nitendra Merkom (IIPS) students of the JCB Boy's hostel for thrashing and injuring their junior student.

The proctorial board has decided to suspend the duo from the hostel for the remaining duration of their course at the university.

"The board has decided that the senior students who have been found guilty of thrashing Vikalp (ragging victim) should be suspended from the hostel. It is on the basis of the report submitted by the anti-ragging squad," said DAVV public information officer Dr M S Parmar.

The guilty students will be suspended from their classes until the enquiry of the university is over. The second proctorial board meeting will be held on September 26."A further enquiry is going to be held in this case for ensuring justice. Till the time that enquiry is on, the guilty students will be suspended from their institute," said Parmar.

Viklap Nagale, an MBA (marketing management) student of IMS who hails from Chhindwara district Madhya Pradesh, was beaten up by his seniors and batch mates with belts and sticks after he refused to switch off the light of his room late night on Thursday.

Vikalp's friends at the hostel said that he was troubled by his seniors ever since he came to the hostel a month ago.

Eight students expelled for ragging

Eight senior students of Chandigarh College of Architecture (CCA), Sector 12, have been expelled from their hostel and debarred from attending classes for a month on charges of ragging. These students are Abhi Garg, Saurabh Singh, Raghav, Parthiv Das, Siddharth, Sanchit, Sashank and Raktim. Four of them study in the third year, three in the second and one in final year.

They allegedly indulged in ragging of five students of the first year the whole of Monday night. Following complaints by them on anti-ragging helpline numbers, a preliminary inquiry was held which found the five students were subjected to ragging at the boys’ hostel.

College sources said the guilty students will have to repeat the semester as they will not be able to complete 75 per cent attendance because they have been ordered to stay away from classes for a month.

College Principal Pradeep Bhagat said, “Strict action was taken against the guilty students soon after we received the complaint from the victimised students. Eight students have been suspended from the college for a month and from the hostel forever.”

The five first-year students have been asked to shift to rooms on the ground floor of the hostel with a view to preventing ragging in the future.

Sources said on Monday night many senior students living in the boys’ hostel came back from Delhi after taking part in a contest. These seniors then called five students of the first year from the first floor of the hostel and started ragging them. They were asked to sing, dance and do other objectionable activities. The ragging continued till morning the next day.

The junior students were threatened not to reveal these things to the authorities. But some students gathered courage and the issue reached the authorities.

MUMBAI: A month after six students of a Bandra college were suspended for ragging their juniors, a first-year student of Mahim's St Xavier's Institute of Engineering has registered a complaint against two second-year diploma students of the college for allegedly bashing him up.

The Mahim police, on Monday, registered a non-cognizable complaint against the two accused.

"My son was beaten up twice in seven days by the two seniors. After the second incident, my son stopped going to college," said Maria Perreira, mother of the first-year student. According to complaint, the victim was beaten up by the two outside the college canteen on September 21. "What is the guarantee that my son will not be beaten up again? I had to ask for help from the police," she added.

"We recorded the complainant's statement and according to him, the fight started after a carom game. We have registered a non-cognizable complaint as of now," said an official at Mahim police station.

Perreira, along with some Yuva Sena members, also visited the college authorities to demand justice for her son. "My son had also been receiving threatening calls from the two and ever since, he hasn't stepped out of the house," the mother said.

College principal Shivaji Ghungrad took note of the complaint and has asked the three students and their parents to come for a meeting on Tuesday.

"I have spoken to the second-year students as well as the complainant. We will meet them on Tuesday and discuss the matter. It's not serious and we will solve it on Tuesday," said Ghungrad. He also added that if need be, they will start counselling for both parties. "We will also thoroughly check the backgrounds of these students before taking any decision," added Ghungrad.
