Tension gripp-ed the Government Arts College located in Rasipuram near here on Thursday for several hours after a gang of outsiders allegedly thrashed a few students for allegedly ragging some juniors.

Sources said that the trouble started after a group of outsiders, including the brother of a junior student, stormed into the college and picked up a quarrel with some students questioning as to why juniors were harassed. Suddenly the gang began thrashing a few senior students.

As the situation was going out of control, college authorities informed the police, following which a team from Rasipuram police station rushed to the campus and held inquiries.

“We have been holding inquiries with both sides and proper action will be taken after ascertaining the facts,” said, T Thamaraiselvan, Inspector of Rasipuram police station.

Meanwhile, the college authorities denied any ragging issue behind the quarrel.

DURGAPUR: First-year and final-year students of Bengal College of Engineering and Technology in Durgapur clashed at the college hostel late on Wednesday after the first-year students accused their seniors of ragging.

Ten students have been arrested for rioting on campus, based on complaints at New Town police by the college authorities.

No arrests have been made in connection with ragging.

Ten students have also been injured in the violence, six of whom have been hospitalized, said police.

According to police, the clash was reported at 8.15pm on Wednesday. "There was load shedding in the hostel in Durgapur's Bidhan Nagar area around 8pm. All students stay in this hostel.

Minutes later, the first-year students alleged that they were being ill-treated and ragged by the seniors for the past several days. This triggered a clash between the two groups and several students were injured," said a police officer.

The situation was brought under control after ACP Sylvamurugan reached the spot with a large police force.

A police picket has been posted on the campus to prevent further clash.

The six students who are undergoing treatment at a private hospital have been identified as Udit Narayan Jena, Sumit Ghatak, Sourav Chakraborty, Anand Mohan, Pawan Kumar Das and Kumar Abhinav.

All of them are students of the first semester of computer science.

Following the clash, college authorities lodged two separate FIRs. While the first case pertains to rioting on campus in which arrests have been made, the other complaint — which deals with ragging — has been lodged against unknown people.

Of the 10 students held, eight are from first year and the remaining from the final year.

Asansol police commissioner Vineet Goel confirmed the arrests. "We are probing the case further as there are serious allegations of ragging,'' said Goel.

Institute director S B Ganguly said the case was being probed internally.

"Our anti-ragging committee is also looking into the case. The police have been provided all help. We will take action against erring students once we receive both reports and the allegations are proven. Ragging will not be tolerated in our institute,'' he said.

Following a complaint of ragging, the Mohali police on Thursday night arrested six of the seven accused students of Northern Indian Institute of Fashion Technology (NIIFT). The seventh accused, Sahil Vashisht from Ludhiana, is still on the run. As the offences under which they were booked are bailable, the six students were released on bail on Friday.

The accused have been identified as Sehajvir Singh from Mohali; Shehbaaj Khan from Sangrur; Sahil Vashisht from Ludhiana; and Mritunjay, Khusnoor, Raj Kumar and Krishna Singh from Patna. All seven were booked for voluntarily causing hurt, wrongful restraint, criminal intimidation, assault to dishonour, rioting and unlawful assembly.

Six of the accused have completed their diploma and are currently pursuing a 'bridge course' at NIIFT to obtain a degree while Krishna is a second-year student. The FIR was registered following a complaint by the victims who were allegedly ragged and beaten up by the accused.

According to the police, the victims — Amresh Mehta from Noida, Shikhar Srivastava from Lucknow and Satyam from Patna — are first-year students who were being harassed by the accused for several days.

The accused allegedly asked the victims to remove their clothes and dance publicly in the college canteen around 2 pm on Thursday. When the victims refused to do so, they were allegedly beaten up by the accused causing them injuries. While Satyam got stitches in his ear and Amresh suffered minor injuries, Shikhar was injured while trying to save the two.

The victims alleged they were being constantly harassed and ragged by the accused for the last several days. The victims said that the actual number of seniors was around 10-12 and they used metallic knuckles while beating the juniors. "These seniors have been ragging people for the last three-four years but have never been booked because the college administration tries to suppress such cases.

Even this time, the incident happened right in front of the entire college, including teachers, but the head of the college maintains that it was just a case of fighting among students and not ragging," alleged the victims.

The victims also alleged that the college authorities were trying to threaten them not to register a case or they would be expelled.

However, Madan Lal, the assistant registrar of the Institute, denied these allegations.

"We do not suppress such cases but rather try to sort them out because we don't want our students to be branded as criminals. It's common for students at this age to fight among themselves, and that's what happened yesterday. It was not ragging," he said.

This was reiterated in a press release wherein Vishva Bandhu, the director of NIIFT, said that an investigation into the incident by a four-member anti-ragging committee revealed that it was not a case of ragging but of fighting between two groups of students. He added that the authorities would look into the matter involving both the groups and take necessary action against them.

However, other students of the institute said the accused allegedly often called their juniors to their flat and ragged them severely. "They make their juniors remove their clothes and dance in a vulgar way among several other things," said a third-year student.

Prithvin, a first year Computer Science diploma student at the KVG Polytechnic College in Sullia about 85 kilometers from Mangalore, who was allegedly ragged by his seniors, has complained to the Dakshina Kannada Superintendent of Police (SP) that the principal of the college is pressurising him to withdraw the case.

SP Abhishek Goyal said, “The boy approached us stating that he is under pressure from the principal to withdraw the case. We have asked the Sullia police to look into this aspect.”

Denying the allegation, college principal Ganesh N R said, “When the incident was brought to my notice, I immediately directed the student to file a complaint.

I have suspended five students who were involved in the incident. A 12-member committee has been formed to keep a check on ragging activities. Every day, two members from the committee will conduct inspections. Security at the hostel during the night has been increased, since the incident was reported after the 10.30 pm deadline.”

Sullia police on Wednesday filed a case against five students in connection with the ragging incident.

The victim identified as Prithvin, a resident of Mysore, alleged that five students had come to his hostel room at around 11pm on Tuesday and asked him to fetch drinking water to their room. When he refused, they allegedly slapped him hard on his face, causing him a wound on his lip.

Police have booked cases under sections 143, 147, 325 read with 149 under the Karnataka Education Act of 1983 against five boys. Darshan, Krithik, and Bhavan who were arrested late evening on Wednesday were produced before the magistrate and have been remanded in judicial custody. Sachin and Kaushik are absconding.

The accused were booked under section 4 of the Prohibition of Ragging Act, 1997.

According to the police, the victim, 15-year-old Sogal Kethan, a student of 1st year Mechanical Diploma at the Polytechnic, was staying at a private hostel in town.

He was forcibly taken out of the hostel on Thursday and severely beaten up as part of ragging by the accused -- Md. BARASAT: The ragging horror returned to haunt the state with an engineering student allegedly singeing the face of a junior at Deganga in North 24-Parganas on Saturday.

The 20-year-old mechanical student of Acharya Jagadish Chandra Polytechnic College was allegedly attacked because he refused to do drugs, which the senior student had repeatedly tried to force him into. Rajib Kumar, a second-year student, suffered burns when Govinda Jadav, a third-year student of mechanical engineering, allegedly pressed a chillum against his left cheek.

After being treated in hospital, Rajib complained to Debabrata Pradhan, the teacher in charge of the college, and lodged an FIR with Deganga police on Saturday afternoon. Jadav has gone into hiding.

According to college sources, Rajib, a resident of Ranaghat in Nadia, has been staying with two classmates in a mess adjacent to the college for about one and a half years.

Jadav, a resident of Jharkhand, started living with them in the same room around two months back.

Jadav allegedly drank and did drugs in the room and also forced the others to join him. "Jadav beat me up several times as I strongly protested against taking drugs in the room.

He abused me verbally and threatened me. The situation worsened on Friday when my two roommates were asleep," Rajib said.

According to Rajib's complaint, after taking ganja, Jadav tried to force him to take it. "It was around 11.30 pm. He first held the burning chillum in front of me and asked me to smoke it. When I refused, he threatened me with dire consequences and tried to force me.
When I put up a fight, he pressed the chillum against my left cheek. I screamed out in pain, which woke our roommates. Jadav fled," Rajib said in his complaint.

Pradhan said the college authorities have taken up the matter seriously. "We will take stern action against the accused after holding a meeting on Monday.

A committee has already been formed by the college to inquire into the matter," Pradhan said.

Barasat ASP Bhaskar Mukherjee said they have received a complaint and started a probe. "We are looking for the accused," he said.

http://www.dnaindia.com/pune/1884048/report-harassed-by-fellow-trainees-17-yr-old-girl-commits-suicide

Unable to take the constant harassment by fellow trainees at a private company in Nashik, a 17-year-old girl committed suicide on Sunday. Six boys and four girls, whose names were mentioned in her suicide note, have been arrested for ragging her and remanded to four days’ police custody.

On Sunday evening, after her parents and brother had gone to the market, the girl slit her wrists and then hanged herself in her house Indira Nagar. Her brother returned home first and, after she didn’t open the door, informed her father.

He broke open the door only to find his daughter hanging. She was rushed to a city hospital where she died on Tuesday morning.

The police arrested the 10 accused on Monday under Section 4 of the Maharashtra Prohibition of Ragging Act 1999. They were produced before the court and were remanded to police custody for four days.

Their names are -- Bhushan Pardeshi, Abjijeet Bhor, Vishal Korade, Amit Pawar, Swapnil Sonawane, Harshal Patil, Shweta Shinde, Tejaswini Birari, Shubhada Kajale, and Neha Sonawane.

According to the police, the girl was an apprentice at Nashik’s BOSCH company since one and a half year.

According to her suicide note, she was being harassed and mentally tortured by a group of 10 colleagues, including four girls, whom she has named in the note. Unable to deal with the continuous humiliation, she ended her life, the note said.

The girl’s father stated that his daughter was an intelligent student. She topped in almost every course she took up. After securing good marks in standard X, she was selected as a trainee in turner trade at BOSCH.

She had also earned a gold medal in an exam conducted by the Computer Society of India. She had bagged a first prize at Bengaluru in June, at a national competition where she had represented her company. She was also selected for a training course in Germany on the basis of her intelligence, skills and sincerity.

Her father also said that his daughter had mentioned that her colleagues were harassing and teasing her.

The girls and boys often taunted her and passed remarks, her father said, adding that he had also asked her to talk to her seniors without losing her focus at work. He had also spoken to her colleagues and requested them not to tease her, but that did not help. She had taken leave on Wednesday and Thursday as she was not well. But when she returned to work on Friday, the girls made fun of her with connotative comments. She was visibly depressed while going to work on Saturday, the day before she ended her life.

BHOPAL: Another ragging complaint was filed by an engineering student on the helpline of University Grants Commission (UGC) amanmovement.org on Wednesday. The complainant is a student of Sagar Institute of Research and Technology (SIRT).

Shikha Parag, first year B Pharma student in her complaint, said few seniors misbehaved with her while she was travelling in the bus. "Vivek Singh Thakur and Priyansu Ganese had misbehaved with me," said Shikha. She requested the helpline to help her. After receiving the complaint, the helpline immediately contacted dean students' welfare of Rajiv Gandhi Prodyogiki Vishvavidyalaya (RGPV) Anil Goyal.

When contacted, Goyal confirmed that helpline contacted him regarding the issue. "I have informed the authorities of SIRT immediately after receiving calls from helpline," Goyal told media.

Like in previous incidents, SIRT authorities also claimed that there is no such student in their college by the name of Shikha Parag.

SIRSA: Alleging ragging by seniors, 37 Class X students of Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya (JNV), Odhan in the district, moved out of their hostels on Monday night. As they staged a protest, alleging that they were ragged by students of Class XII, police have reached the school and begun a probe.

Taking action against the erring students, the school principal suspended nine students for 15 days from both classes. The Class X students alleged that their seniors from class XII called them to their rooms and tortured them.

They further alleged that they informed the principal, but no action was taken against the seniors.

Refusing to go back to the hostel, they staged a protest against school authorities at the grain market in Odhan.

JNV principal G K Mishra said, "As I learned about the incident, I informed police, asking them to look for the missing students. However, the protest by students Class X is not justified. I will look into their complaint and take action against the seniors, if found guilty."

Karnal: A student, Manav, from DAV College, was seriously injured when some youths from Jail Colony here attacked him with a sharp weapon at the bus terminus on Tuesday.

According to police, Manav and his friend were attacked when they were about to take a bus to go home. Some passersby spotted Manav lying in a pool of blood and rushed him to the trauma centre of Kalpana Chawla Medical College and Hospital from where he was shifted to a private hospital. His condition is stated to be critical. Police have registered a case against the alleged attacker, Vicky, and two others.

A 17-year-old college student in Lucknow is fighting for her life in hospital after she fell from the third floor of a building on campus.

Sumbul Ishaq's family alleges that she was either pushed by senior students, or fell down after she was cornered by a group that was ragging her on Tuesday.

She has multiple fractures and her jaw has been hurt so badly that she cannot speak.

A police team visited the private college today to gather more information and to question the principal about her family's accusations.

Her father, Abu Ishaq, has told the police that Sumbul had complained recently about being harassed by other students both on the bus she took to college and on campus. He says his complaints to the college management were ignored.

He also says a teacher humiliated her for not being fluent in English.

The police will have to wait till Sumbul is better before it can ask her to help identify those who were allegedly her tormentors. College officials say her cellphone was found after her accident and has been given to the police, which says it will see if records of text messages or calls furnish clues about her ordeal.

Dr L Shekhar, a senior management official, told NDTV, "No complaint of any ragging or harassment of girl was ever brought to the notice of the management by the girl's guardians. When the incident took place, the girl was rushed to the hospital by four teachers and one student. The college is cooperating with the police in its investigations."

BHOPAL: A student of local engineering college filed a complaint on UGC website alleging that his seniors forced him to undress on a bus. Amit Kewat, a student of first semester of mechanical engineering branch, Patel College of Engineering Bhopal, is the complainant.

However, Rajiv Gandhi Technical University (RGTU) authorities denied any such incident, saying there is no student by the name in college records.

On Tuesday, three complaints of ragging were registered with the UGC anti-ragging helpline from across the state. Two other complaints were filed by a student of Rewa Institute of Technology and a student of MLB Government College of Excellence, Gwalior.

The second complainant, a student of pharmacy, alleged he was beaten up his seniors. The principal, however, later called both parties to broker a settlement.

In the third complain, Gopal Singh, student of BA LLB, first year of MLB Government of Excellence, Gwalior, alleged that his seniors Anil Sharma and Naveen Mishra beat him up with iron rods inside the classroom.
INDORE: The anti-ragging committee of the Devi Ahilya Vishwavidyalaya (DAVV) has found that the ragging incident at JC Bose Hostel could have been averted had the chief warden and warden dealt with the issue strictly. Committee submitted its report to proctorial board for further inquiry on Monday.

Shivam Yadav, a student of School of Pharmacy of Devi Ahilya Vishwavidyalaya (DAVV) has lodged a complaint to the UGC portaly that four students Ravindra Raghuvanshi, Suraj Pathak, Anshul Talmale and Shashank Koshta, all studying in different departments of DAVV and hostellers, are allegedly harassing him and had threatened him again on August 30 at the campus.

In his statement Yadav has alleged that earlier, in May 2013, the students had beaten him up in JC Bose Hostel. Yadav had reported the matter to the chief warden and also lodged a police complaint against the accused. The matter is pending in the court and students allegedly abused Yadav after the court hearing on August 30.

Yadav had alleged that continuous harassment has affected his studies mainly because the students used to pass comments, knock at his hostel room door, abuse him etc. He alleged that though he was shifted to Jawaharlal Nehru Hostel from J C Bose Hostel after the May 2013 incident, the accused Ravindra Yadav and Suraj Pathak are yet to be shifted to Bafna Hostel as per the chief warden's order and continue stay at the JC Bose Hostel.

After receiving the complaint, UGC on Saturday had instructed DAVV officials to act and submit report.

On the same day, dean students' welfare, chief warden, warden of JC Bose hostel approached the complainant to counsel him late night, on Sunday, instructions had come to submit a detailed reported on the issue. The officials took statements of all accused.

"We had taken statements of all four students separately and they all told different stories. So, we have forwarded the matter to proctorial board. It seems that incident occurred due to old rivalry," said member of anti-ragging committee Laxman Shinde.

COIMBATORE: Five senior students from Government Law College, Coimbatore, have been booked for ragging a junior. The victim was forced to salute the senior students. Three of the victim's friends were also assaulted when they intervened.

E Annamalai (19), a native of Thoothukudi, is a second year student of the law college.

He was standing in front of the main entrance gate of the college on Thursday when two senior students, Jayaram (fourth year) and Suresh (fifth year) started ragging him. The duo told Annamalai to salute them.

Annamalai's friends, Abdul Rahman (fourth year) from Gandhipuram, Ramesh Pandian (fourth year) from Theni, Prabhakaran (fifth year) from Muthukulathur in Ramanathapuram district, Sathish ( fifth year) from Theni and Thavamani Selvam (second year) from Madurai intervened and asked the seniors to leave Annamalai alone.

However, Jayaram and Suresh refused to back off and, instead, invited three friends to join them in ragging Annamalai. A quarrel arose between the two groups and the pro-ragging groups attacked Annamalai's friends with knives and wooden logs. Abdul Rahmann sustained injuries on his left hand while Ramesh Pandian and Sathish received injuries on their arm and head respectively. The trio was admitted at Coimbatore Medical College Hospital (CMCH).

Annamalai lodged a complaint with Vadavalli police inspector L Baskar who registered a case against the senior students, Jayaram, Suresh and three others under section 341 (punishment for wrongful restraint), 294 (b) (sings, recites or utters any obscene song, ballad or words, in or near any public place ) and 324 (voluntarily causing hurt by dangerous weapons) of the IPC and under section 4 of Tamil Nadu Prohibition of Ragging Act, 1997.

"We are conducting a detailed inquiry about the two groups of students. Stringent action will be taken against students found guilty of ragging," said inspector Baskar.

http://articles.timesofindia.indiatimes.com/2013-08-30/guwahati/41617604_1_nit-silchar-n-v-deshpande-four-students

SILCHAR: Fifteen students of National Institute of Technology (NIT), Silchar, all belonging to the 5th semester, will face punishment for their involvement in ragging inside the institute.

Informing this to TOI, NIT Silchar director N V Deshpande on Thursday said the punishment to be meted out will be exemplary and justifiably harsh to act as a deterrent against recurrence of such incidents. While 4 out of 15 accused students will be suspended, the rest would have to pay a fine of Rs 5,000 each and will be disqualified from appearing in campus selection tests.

The decision to take action against the erring students has been taken at a high-level meeting held at NIT near here on Thursday afternoon.

Although Deshpande stopped short of spelling out the nature of punishment to be meted out to the erring students, sources said while four students will face suspension from this institute of national importance, others will be asked to leave the NIT hostel.

Over the last one week, at least 50 3rd semester students of the institute were ragged by their seniors - all belonging to the 5th semester - in the hostel. However, this came to light only after the victims wrote to the joint secretary to the ministry of human resource development and technical director of all NITs, New Delhi, without informing this to the director of NIT, Silchar or other local authorities. This created a flutter in the institute and Deshpande was swift in taking action against the accused.

http://articles.timesofindia.indiatimes.com/2013-08-28/kochi/41537200_1_college-hostel-college-principal-law-student

KOCHI: A student of Government Law College, Ernakulam, was suspended for ragging his junior after the latter refused to pay him Rs 50 for entering the college boys' hostel.

The inquiry conducted by the college principal found that the senior student, Shandas, guilty of ragging.

"Restraining a student from entering a place that he is lawfully entitled to, asking him to wait at a place he is not interested, asking him to do something he does not like, using abusive words causing embarrassment to him undoubtedly and squarely fall within the definition of ragging under the Kerala Prohibition of Ragging Act," the inquiry report stated.

"As it is a prima facie case of ragging, we have suspended the student as per the ragging act and forwarded the complaint to police for further action," said principal (in charge) V R Jayadevan.

The principal conducted the inquiry after the college received a complaint from the anti-ragging cell helpline on August 14. The incident happened on August 5.

In his complaint, the victim, Mithunlal T V, a first-year BA (criminology) student, said he had gone to the college hostel on August 5 at about 4.30pm to meet his classmates, when he was restrained by Shandas at the entrance. Shandas demanded Rs 50 from him and verbally abused him when he refused to pay.

The victim further stated in the complaint that Shandas had dragged him pulling his collar and forcefully pushed him out of the hostel, while stating that "those belonging to his community are expected to sit only on the floor".

Later, the accused barged into the victim's room in the post-metric hostel, Ernakulam, and threatened to finish him due to which the victim alleged in his complaint that "he is mentally tormented and afraid to come to the college and attend classes".

However, police are yet to register a case under the ragging act. "We have not received the report from the college. We just know that the student has been suspended by the college. Once we get the report, we will look into it," assistant commissioner (Kochi city) D S Sunesh Babu said.Based on a complaint submitted by the victim on August 7, the police had on the same day registered a case against Shandas under the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.

http://www.telegraphindia.com/1130827/jsp/frontpage/story_17276701.jsp#.Ui8v_Mb7CK8

Silchar, Aug. 26: A ragging “demonstration” made 19 Class IX students of Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya, Monacharra, flee from the school early today before being caught 7km away and herded back to face suspension.

Monacharra, in Hailakandi district of south Assam, is about 50km from this town.

The 19 boys managed to flee from the school premises around 1am today but the school administration sprang into action as soon as it got wind of their escapade and managed to catch them near Lala town, 7km from the school.

Sources said the students had decided to flee after two boys — Class IX student Mustafa Ahmed Barbhuiya and Khalid Bin Saha Alam of Class VIII — were allegedly beaten up by a group of Class XII students near the student lavatory in the school’s backyard around noon yesterday.

A Class IX student said, “We were called over by a group of Class XII students and made to witness the ragging taking place near the school toilet. They threatened us and said we were witnessing just a ‘demo’ and that they would continue to rag us in the hostel at night.”

The sources said 31 students of Class IX had planned to flee from the school at first.

But for some unknown reason, only 19 managed to get out. The students were planning to meet the deputy commissioner today to complain about the torture they had been going through in the past few days.

When this correspondent asked a few students of the same class as to why had they not reported the matter to the school authorities, they said Class XII tests were on and so they thought the matter would not be taken seriously.

According to the sources, the students believed that the school authorities wouldn’t be able to resolve the matter in a fair way. So they took the matter into their own hands and decided to inform the district administration instead.

Apparently, the school authorities did take the matter a bit casually.

Principal Anuradha T. said, “There was a small fight on Sunday morning involving some students and may be, the other students got scared because of that and tried to flee.”

Later on, however, the 11 Class XII students allegedly involved in the ragging were identified and suspended for 10 days — same as the suspension term of the 19 “escapees”.

Hailakandi deputy commissioner Shamsher Singh visited the residential school today on hearing about the incident and ordered an investigation.

“The district administration has appointed sub-divisional officer (Sadar) Naba Kumar Deka Baruah to investigate the matter,” he said.

No complaint, however, has been lodged with police in this regard, as the students injured in the “demonstration” and their parents have chosen to remain silent.

Last month, seniors beat up 16 Classes VII and VIII students of Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya, Ransaidram, at Basugaon in Chirang district in what was described as another case of ragging.

http://articles.timesofindia.indiatimes.com/2013-08-26/kolkata/41454622_1_besu-complaint-security-guards

KOLKATA: Ragging has started showing its ugly face in tech campuses here, within days of the new academic session. Two complaints were registered on Thursday and Friday, one at the Bengal Engineering and Science University (Besu) and the other at one of the state's leading private tech colleges.

On Thursday, a first-year student of the metallurgy department at Besu complained that he was dragged inside a hostel occupied by senior boys, severely beaten up and abused. The boy is from Bihar and stays in a room in hostel No. 9, a hostel that's exclusively meant for first-year boys, to protect them from being ragged by seniors.

According to his complaint, the incident happened around 5.30pm as the boy was returning to his hostel after getting some reference material photocopied.

As he was walking past hostel No. 7, he was allegedly stopped by five senior boys who then gagged and dragged him inside.

As the boy came out of the hostel in a completely dishevelled state, the security guards discovered him and asked him what had happened. After he told them that he was ragged and beaten up by seniors, the security guards took the boy to the anti-ragging cell comprising faculty members and administrative staff of Besu, and a complaint was registered based on the victim's statement.

The victim was then taken back into the hostel, where he identified the culprits. The members of the anti-ragging cell informed vice-chancellor A K Ray, who was out of station. But Ray ordered an investigation to be launched immediately a report be given to him on Monday.

"I have just returned and am appalled at the complaint.

I have sought the report on Monday and will decide on the punishment immediately. Besu is a zero-tolerance campus when it comes to ragging and I promise strict action," said Ray on Sunday.

The victim, said varsity sources, has been assured of safety and is on campus. The authorities, however, are not sure whether the perpetrators of the crime are still on campus, since they are from the city and are likely to have gone back home over the weekend.

On Friday, a similar complaint reached Save, an anti-ragging NGO, from a first-year student of BBA at a private tech college.

The student was part of a group of 18. This group, according to the complaint, was accosted by their seniors on the college grounds, abused in filthy language, ordered them to take off their belts and were given certain "codes" to be followed on campus.

The first-years were allegedly asked to introduce themselves and every time a student did that, he/she was greeted with jeers and foul language.

The complainant has sought the intervention of the NGO.

"We have lodged an anonymous complaint because the victims are scared. We have informed the college authorities and have also sent a copy of the complaint to the national anti-ragging helpline," said Kushal Banerjee, spokesperson for Save.

Twelve students of the Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College at Aligarh Muslim University have been booked for allegedly ragging a junior, police said. The case was registered on Saturday on the basis of a complaint filed by Jawed, a third-year student of the college.

According to police, Jawed, who is in his third-year at the college, had Saturday lodged a complaint of ragging against the 12, all of whom are fourth year students. The complainant, a boarder of Hadi Hasan Hall, said that the accused had confronted him inside the hostel earlier in the week and ragged him, causing him great "mental agony".

Meanwhile, AMU Proctor Jamshed Siddiqui on Sunday said that they were waiting for the police report before taking any action in the matter. He added that the university had also opened a separate probe into the allegations.

He, however, pointed out that preliminary inquiries by police suggested that the "issue does not pertain to ragging but stems from a confrontation between two students".

"The complainant is a third-year student, so the charge of ragging appears far-fetched," he added. Siddiqui said that in his initial report to university authorities, the complainant had not used the word "ragging", which had been added to the complaint as an afterthought. He, however, stated that, "anyone found guilty would face strict disciplinary action".
MANGALORE: The Sullia police on Wednesday filed cases against 15 students in connection with a ragging incident at KVG Polytechnic at Sullia, about 85km from here, after a student was allegedly assaulted by his seniors on Tuesday night.

The victim has been identified as Prithvin (18), a resident of Mysore.

Police said about 15 students had come to his hostel room late on Tuesday night at around 11pm and had asked him to get drinking water to their room. When the victim refused, the seniors allegedly slapped him hard on his face and the victim in his complaint stated that his jaw hurt badly after the assault.

The police have booked cases under sections 143, 147, 325 read with 149 under the Karnataka Education Act of 1983 against Pavan, Ganesh, Kaushik, Karthik, Sachin and others. Police said even the accused were from Mysore and Madikeri.
The father of a victim of ragging in college has said that the principal and police did not heed his complaint when he tried to apprise them of the matter.

The victim, Harsh Chauhan, 18, a B.Sc first-year student, is undergoing treatment in hospital with serious injuries on his head and left eye.

While the principal of the college, Sunanda Raguhuvanshi said Harsh tried to “sexually harass” some girls and then senior students retaliated against this, station house officer Pragya Arya said the girls with whom Harsh had “misbehaved” assaulted him.

When asked whether the girls concerned had approached her on this, Raguhuvanshi said, “No, they fear it will bring them a bad name.”

Harsh said: “On the day (August 14) when six seniors attacked and injured me badly, I went to the college principal with a bleeding head to ask her for help but instead of helping me, she asked me to leave her room and closed the doors of the chamber.

Later, I went to the police station, where two seniors of my college were present. They insisted that I do not lodge a complaint against anyone. Despite their warning, I went ahead and lodged the complaint but the police also asked me not to blow the issue out of proportion.”

BHOPAL: Nothing seems to be going right for Bakatullah University Institute of Technology (BUIT) these days. Two days after students raised a stink over poor lab facilities and shortage of faculty, institute authorities have another problem on their plate on Friday.

A first year mechanical engineering student of the institute registered a complaint against seniors on the UGC helpline.

Incidentally, it is the fourth time in a week's time when a student from Bhopal registered a complaint of ragging on the UGC helpline. Earlier, three students of MANIT filed complaints of ragging on the UGC helpline.

In his complaint, BUIT student highlighted juniors were being mentally and physically harassed. He claimed that second year students are also making juniors' life miserable on the campus and in hostels.

"I was asked to do unnecessary things. When I refused I was beaten up," said the student without quoting his name. In his complaint, student said though scared, he was ready to identify seniors who had beaten him. He has requested authorities to take necessary steps at the earliest.

A junior student, on condition of anonymity, said, "Complaint by a student on UGC helpline is not surprising. Ragging in BUIT is common for many years. There is no one to take care of junior students."

Sources said, ragging took place in Jawahar hostel. Despite repeated efforts by UGC helpline, vice-chancellor Professor Nisha Dubey and registrar Dr Sanjay Tiwari could not be contacted as their cell-phones were switched off.

Efforts by TOI to contact the two authorities also proved futile.

Barkatullah University, late in the night, issued a press note claiming that there was no incident of ragging on the campus

Two students have withdrawn their admission from the Marine Engineering and Research Institute (MERI) in Kolkata after being allegedly ragged. Amir Suhail and Vaanchit Kundlia, who joined the institute on August 7 this year, have also filed an FIR at the Taratala Police Station in this regard.

When Amir informed his father, Suhail Ahmed, about the alleged physical punishment and threats from his seniors, Ahmed contacted the Anti-Ragging Cell in New Delhi, which forwarded the complaint to college Director M K Ghosh on August 10.

Amir has also alleged the institute director told him that the seniors had the "right" to slap their juniors and that it is for their own benefit.

The parents of the two are now demanding that the initial admission fee paid to the college, which amounts to Rs 1,17,500 each, be refunded.

The institute director Ghosh denied the allegations, saying the reports have been exaggerated.

A guest teacher at Government Thakur Ranmat Singh College in Rewa district was beaten up by two senior students on Monday morning, after he prevented them from ragging first year students.

The incident comes just five days after a girl student of a pharmacy college in Bhopal committed suicide having been ragged by seniors.

Interestingly, earlier in the morning, students of BCom first year of the college had made a complaint with the national anti- ragging helpline of the University Grants Commission, saying that the senior students were harassing them and beating them up regularly.

According to Civil Lines police, around 10.10am on Monday, when the guest teacher Jitendra Shukla was taking English class of first year students at the college, the two accused–Mehfuz Khan and Nitesh Tiwari–barged into the class and told the teacher to leave as they wanted to rag the juniors.

When the teacher refused to allow them, the accused abused and assaulted him, in-charge of the Civil Lines police station, Sandeep Ayachi told HT over telephone.

Upon the complaint of the teacher, the police have registered cases against the two accused under multiple sections, including assault, criminal intimidation, preventing government servant from discharging duties and forcing to commit offence (in this case becoming an accomplice in ragging).

Mehfuz is a son of a police constable and has a past record of multiple crimes, mainly intimidation and assault.

Both are absconding and the police have launched a manhunt for them.

Despite repeated attempts on the landline of the college and on the cell phone, principal of the TRS College, AP Mishra, could not be contacted for comment.

Earlier in the morning, after getting a telephonic complaint from the BCom first year students of TRS College, the authorities of the national anti-ragging helpline contacted the principal of the college, vice-chancellor of Avadesh Pratap Singh (APS) University, Rewa, and superintendent of police of Rewa Akash Jindal, urging them to take immediate steps to resolve the issue.

when contacted, vice chancellor of APS University, RM Mishra, said he had been intimated about the ragging complaint by the anti-ragging helpline.

He said now that he has also been informed about the assault on teacher, he would talk to the principal of the college on the both the issues and ask him to take suitable action.

“The university-level antiragging monitoring committee would also conduct a probe into the incidents and we would initiate action after the report,” the VC said. (With inputs from Rakesh Yengal in Rewa)
