Designing Edible Forest Gardens

"Designing Edible Forest Gardens" will explore the vision, theory, design and practice of ecological forest agriculture that uses our temperate deciduous forest as a model. By mimicking the structure and function of a natural ecosystem architecture through all stages of growth, a good design can maximize photosynthesis for perennial production of food, fodder, and fiber.

The short course will cover the basics of forest gardening: forest ecology and architecture, examples of forest gardens, principles of permaculture, site analysis and selection, healthy soil, water management, understanding plant guilds and plant community functions, selection of plant species, the design process of forest gardens, goals and financial plans, and tours of two urban food forests in Kansas City. Participants will leave the course with plant lists, resources on design strategies, and a base map for scheming and dreaming up your forest garden.

Designing Edible Forest Gardens will be held Saturday-Sunday, June 1 & 2 at CoWork Waldo, 7449 Broadway Blvd., Kansas City MO 64114. Enrollment fee $160.

The workshop taught by three well versed and experienced permaculture designers, Steve Moring of Kaw Permaculture, Michael Almon of Forest Floor Permaculture, and Steve Mann of Cultivate Kansas City. For more information go to http://www.sustainabilityaction.net/.
Beyond Season Extension: High Tunnels for Economic, Community and Environmental Sustainability

Current Extension Educators, NRCS personnel and other agriculture professionals throughout the state are encouraged to attend this upcoming professional development series at Green Edge Organic Gardens. This professional development series will train agriculture professionals on the site specific adaptation and use of high tunnel structures at small farms such as Green Edge in order to extend and create growing seasons, as well as training on the marketability of specialty crop production year-round. Three introductory workshops will take place this year, with the first on April 4. Mileage reimbursements or pre-payments are available if necessary. In the introductory sessions attendees will learn:• Season extension on small acre specialty crop farms in Appalachia• Manipulating high tunnel design and management in specific climates and seasons• Winter crop selection and production in high tunnels - transitioning to the spring season• Spring and summer cropping and marketing strategies - high tunnels for warm season crops • Cropping for fall and winter transition with cold season crops – accounting for frost and more• Production of specialty crops including micro greens and mushrooms for a broad crop portfolio• Diversified marketing of crops toward sustainable, small farm business modelThe hope is that following these trainings, agriculture professionals will be able to disseminate the information learned to their regions and be even better equipped to aid their local producers in site specific adaptations of high tunnels in order to increase local production. Participants will also receive professionally designed print and electronic copies of material that will be covered to use for future on-farm consultations.Following the introductory workshops, two need-based advanced courses will be designed and implemented the second year of the professional development series. Participants are encouraged to attend several if not all of the first year sessions, as each season presents unique challenges.Green Edge Organic Gardens is a certified organic farm on 120 acres of fertile bottomland in Amesville, Ohio. Owners Kip and Becky Rondy have worked for years to develop their innovative system of high tunnel, specialty crop production and marketing that has allowed them to expand and hire a fulltime farm manager, community supported agriculture (CSA) manager, farm staff for vegetables and specialty crops and a rotating group of live-in interns.
