"The Boys are Back" Benefit Show for the Northfield Senior Center

An afternoon of storytelling, laughter, and music are the makings of a benefit show for the Northfield Senior Center!

Will Healy, storyteller extraordinaire and host of KYMN's "The Long Road Home" will start the afternoon of fun. Craig Wasner, the Over and Back band's "keyboard whiz and soulful vocalist" will keep you tapping your foot. Free ice cream sundaes will be served at intermission.

Tickets are available for purchase at the Senior Center. Reserved seating is $30 and general admission is $15.

It's going to be great -- the boys are back!!!

Read Locally on National Bookstore Day

Saturday, November 7, 2009 marks the first National Bookstore Day, a great idea cooked up by the folks at Publishers Weekly to promote local independent bookstores. This would be a great opportunity to stop in at Northfield's downtown independent bookstore, Monkey See, Monkey Read and do your holiday book shopping. Jerry Bilek, the proprietor, has a great selection in the shop, and he's always happy to place special orders for books he doesn't have on hand. The shop is open from 10 to 5 on Saturday.

Northfield Skating School Session 2 Winter Registration Open

Registration is now open for 2 more sessions of Northfield Skating School lessons at the Northfield Arena. The session 2 registration deadline is 11/23/09. Sign up for both sessions before the deadline and receive a $5 discount. We are a U.S. Figure Skating Model Program offering lessons to skaters with a full range of recreational and competitive goals, including beginners, hockey players, competitive skaters, adults, and everyone in between!

This weekend in theater: Fiddler on the Roof is opening at the Northfield High School with performances on Friday and Saturday at 7:30. Shattuck-St. Mary's in Faribault is putting on Night Watch on Friday and Saturday at 7:30. At 8 p.m. on Friday and Saturday there are performances of Measure for Measure in the Arena Theater at Carleton.

Also on Friday, Norwegian Cowboy is playing the Tavern Lounge at 7 p.m. St. Olaf's annual Swing Dance is happening from 9:30 p.m.-12 a.m. Froggy Bottoms is hosting Mark Mraz and A.J. is playing The Contented Cow.

Fine Craft Collective opens at 200 N. Divison on Thursday

The Fine Craft Collective of Northfield is busy setting up in it's new space at 200 N. Divison Street. This year there are 18 artisans showing off their work, and many of them will be in the gallery during the opening reception on Thursday, November 5 from 5:00 - 8:00 PM to chat about their process and inspiration. Stop by for some refreshments and fresh perspective on how to craft your world.

This will be the Fine Craft Collective's sixth year presenting an assortment of handmade local art objects in a gallery setting. Last year it was held at Grezzo Gallery, and has now moved to its own space at 200 N. Divison. The show will run from November 5th through December 24th.

Bergen Woodwind Quintet to perform at St. Olaf Friday

The Bergen Woodwind Quintet is a leading Scandinavian chamber music group that has been featured at such international festivals as Bodensee Festival, Helsinki Summer Festival, International Chamber Music Festival Stavanger, Bergen International Festival, Flanders Festival and Musikherbst Westmünsterland. Members of the BWQ also serve as faculty at the Grieg Academy of the University of Bergen.

The group also will host a variety of masterclasses Saturday, Nov. 7, beginning at 9:30 a.m. in Christiansen Hall of Music at St. Olaf. Contact Jun Qian (qian@stolaf.edu) for more information on the masterclasses.

The performance and masterclasses are free and open to the public.

Open Door Nursery School Students Visit St. Olaf Prairie

In spite of the chill and the rain, all four of our classes at Open Door Nursery School enjoyed venturing into the wetland and prairie area at St Olaf College. Our recent October visit was part of the relationship between the college's Biology department and ODNS. The visits were facilitated by St. Olaf students.

Each class experienced seeing waterfowl on the pond, luring worms from beneath rocks, blowing milkweed seeds into the air, and witnessing incredible Autumn colors as leaves were collected along the trails.

We are grateful that our pre-schoolers have the opportunity to visit this treasured nature area three times a year, Autumn, Winter and Spring. They delight in noticing the changes each season brings!

Snowmobile Safety Class

Ready or not, winter will be on its way soon. Be prepared and register your son or daughter for the Snowmobile Safety Class offered by Northfield Community Services and the Waterford Warriors Snowmobile Club. This class is for ages 12 - 18. Minnesota law requires a valid snowmobile safety certificate to operate a snowmobile on public property. Class dates are the evenings of November 9 and 16.

WINGS Members See The Results of Their Philanthropy at the Northfield Middle School

This past Saturday morning, several Northfield Middle School students and many members of WINGS (Women In Northfield Giving Support), a local philanthropic group, gathered in the Middle School’s media center to discuss and learn more about two successful programs partially funded by WINGS’ contributions. WINGS President Nancy Carlson and middle school “media specialist” Amy Sieve discussed the Tattered Pages and Morning News programs at the Middle School, which were two of the nineteen grants WINGS awarded this year. Tattered Pages allows students to “purchase” donated books using “coupons” awarded for good behavior or doing tasks around the school, while the Morning News is a largely student-run televised morning news program at the middle school.

"Best American Nonrequired Reading 2009" Booksigning

Monster, a short story by Rebekah Frumkin (Carleton '12), is featured in the 2009 edition of Best American Nonrequired Reading (Houghton Mifflin Harcourt), edited by award-winning author Dave Eggers. Described by its editors as an "offbeat but vital anthology," Best American Nonrequired Reading is renowned for bringing together the country's best fiction, journalism, humor, essays and comics while simultaneously introducing a vast readership to dozens of new writers and publications each year. The Carleton Bookstore carries the just-released edition and will host a booksigning event for Frumkin on Tuesday, November 3, from 12-1 p.m.
