Former NCO board member burns the New York Times

Adam Gurno, former chair of our very own Northfield Citizens Online board (he still provides technical assistance to Northfield.org from his home in Rosemount) has been in the news for calling out the New York Times for having published some altered images as part of a photo essay. As the Times confessed, "the images did not wholly reflect the reality they purported to show." The main photo that caught Gurno's eye was a mirrored image of a building interior.

"If I hadn't pointed this out, I think it's just a matter of time before someone else did," Gurno modestly told Northfield.org in an EXCLUSIVE interview. "I got lucky in being in the right place at the right time." And now the Times will block your online access for life, Adam.

Old Log Theater Trip

Ahoy! Set sail for an afternoon of adventure and fun on the Northfield Public Schools Community Services day-trip to see “Treasure Island” at the Old Log Theater, on Friday, July 17.

The mini-coach will depart at 10:30 a.m. from the Northfield Community Resource Center, 1651 Jefferson Parkway. Tickets are $28/child and $32/adult. Seats are limited, so register today by calling (507) 664-3649 or visiting www.nfld.k12.mn.us (follow Community Services link).

This trip includes a comfortable ride to the theater during which you'll hear a short talk about the show, time to enjoy a picnic lunch and your ticket. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Please bring your lunch.

“Treasure Island” is a classic coming-of-age children’s musical about Jim Brown, a cabin boy, who attempts to outsmart pirate Long John Silver in a hunt for buried treasure.

WINGS awards 19 grants for 2009

Women in Northfield Giving Support (WINGS) has awarded its 2009 grants to local nonprofit organizations to help fund projects that improve the lives of women and children in Northfield. The grants were presented at the organization's annual Grants Luncheon held June 27. A total of $48,238 in grants was awarded. WINGS, a Northfield women's philanthropic organization, was founded in 2000 and has since granted more than $325,000 to fund local initiatives. More than 250 women are members.

Once again this year, I attended the annual first street parade and neighborhood picnic over on Northfield's west side and uploaded my photos of the event. Mary Schier sent in a batch of photos from the Northfield Arts Guild's Bye Bye Birdie preview on Bridge Square, and Laura Schenk emailed shots of the community fireworks and a cool moonlit view of Northfield. Glass exhibit to open at city hall Monday

"Art at City Hall 2009," a public art exhibit of seven art glass panels commissioned by Northfield resident and business owner Norman Butler, will open in Northfield City Hall Monday, July 6, 5:30-7 p.m. The display was designed and hung by Dean Kjerland of the ArtOnWater gallery.

The Art at City Hall 2009 project chair is Dixon Bond. Special thanks go to Mayor Mary Rossing and to Northfield City Administrator Joel Walinski for project support, site recommendation, and assistance with the installation.

Another fun-filled weekend in Northfield - this time highlighted by the 4th of July Celebration Saturday on Bridge Square. Food vendors open at 10, the Kiddie Bike Parade kicks it off at Noon (from the Econofoods parking lot) and music plays into the night with fireworks capping it off at dusk. But the weekend starts tonight, Friday, with a great lineup up musicians downtown – Carey Langer at the Contented Cow (5-8), Norwegian Cowboy at the Tavern Lounge (7-11), and New Moon Trio keeping things moving at the Cow at 8. And as it looks to be excellent weather - note that both venues sport riverside decks! The Rueb hosts Karaoke starting at 9.

Q. Looking at your history you were very involved in literary arts. How did you make a transition to photography and does the literary aspect still have its place in your photography?

It’s less a transition and more of a hyphenation. I am currently working on two novel-length fiction works as well as poetry and essays. But there are connections.
