With the Spring 2012 golf season coming to an end, we decide to publish our rankings for all 94-golf courses on the Grand Strand. These rankings are complied from the visitors that go to our golf site www.northmyrtlebeachgolf.com and vote on a 1 to 5 star system. (1-being the lowest, 5-being the highest). They can rate for their favorite course or least favorite course.

Pearl East Closing for New Mini Verde

The Pearl closed the East course on August 16th, and are scheduled to reopen October 1st with new Mini Verde greens. The Pearl East is among other Myrtle Beach golf courses that have decided to make this transition to the more heat tolerant Mini Verde this year.

The Pearl West course will remain open and stay with Bent Grass greens with no plans so far to switch over to the new hybrids of bermuda. Pearl East is a great Dan Maples layout cut through tall Carolina Pines and features great views of the Calabash River.

Both Pearl Courses are among the most popular on our Brunswick Golf Trail Package and Pearl East is currently ranked 9th among the Top 10 golf courses in Myrtle Beach

Founder`s Club of Pawley`s Island wins 2011 Myrtle Beach Golf Course of The Year

The Myrtle Beach Area Golf Course Owners Association, recently announced the winner of the 2011 Myrtle Beach Golf Course of The Year. The former Sea Gull Golf Club in Pawley`s Island closed in 2005 and reopened on February 1, 2008 as the Founders Club of Pawley`s Island. Redesigned by Thomas Walker, the Par 72 measures just over 7000 yards with waste bunkers and elevation changes making the course not only difficult, but also beautiful.

Managed by the Classic Golf Group, which also manages Black Bear Golf Club, and two previous winners of the Golf Course of the Year Title. Burning Ridge Golf Club won in 2006 and Indian Wells Golf Club won in 2004.

The Myrtle Beach Golf Course Owners elect the winner based on four criteria, exceptional quality of the golf course, exceptional quality of the ownership and management, outstanding contribution to the community, and significant contribution to the game.

The National Golf Course Owners Association implemented the award in 1996 and the MBAGCOA has since nominated courses from the Myrtle Beach area. Past recipients of the award include:

Bald Head Island Golf Course is located on a barrier island off the coast of North and South Carolina. This exclusive golf course has only recently begun accepting tee times from the public.

The island is considered a golf resort, so much so, that golf carts are the only form of transportation on the island. The course was designed in 1974 by George Cobb, and recently renovated and updated by course designing legend, Tim Cate. Cate was able to utilize the natural beauty of this subtropical paradise, creating greens that are as challenging as they are breathtaking.

Bald Head Island is a very formal golf course. Proper attire is required and denim of any type is discouraged. Guests must purchase a temporary membership to play the course, and guests of members must accompany the guest at all times on the course.

There is a beautiful country club, staffed with knowledgeable and friendly people. The clubhouse offers delicious food and the pro shop has everything that you need and many things that you did not realize that you wanted. You will enjoy you entire day on Bald Head Island, from the early morning ferry ride watching the sun rise over the ocean, to the soothing sounds of the waves as you journey back to the mainland in the evening.

While some of their regulations may seem rigid, the course is well worth putting on plaid pants and a polo shirt. The scenery is breathtaking. The course design is challenging and fun. The seclusion of the course, combined with the fresh salt air, makes it a course that every golfer should experience.

Some pretty important changes will be happening in 2011 for Barefoot Golf and Resort. Both the Fazio and Norman golf courses will be converting their putting greens from Bermuda to Ultra Dwarf. Barefoot Golf representatives tell us that these changes will occur starting May 6th for the Fazio golf course, and July 7th for the Norman golf course.
Maintanence should last an estimated 6 weeks, depending on the weather.

Golf vacations article in Newsweek hits nail on head

I read an interesting, and very well written, golf article about Myrtle Beach in Newsweek last week. It took time to go into the history of golf in the area, even the first major condominium that was erected, Ocean Forest.

Seemed though, the main point of the article was to highlight just how resilient the golf industry is here in the Grand Stand. Even with the down economy, Myrtle Beach still stands out as a great VALUE destination, simply meaning your buck will go a long way.

Accommodation prices have dropped in the last year, with a few golf course price changes as well. This hasn't lead to more rounds being played though. According to the article, rounds played are down 4.1 percent compared with 2008. The golf groups have also gotten smaller and their stays shorter.

Of course, that is all to be expected. Bad economy equates to less money to spend on golf vacations. Myrtle Beach is popular on drive vacations, and since Spirit and Direct Air has started their direct flights to Myrtle Beach, we are seeing a rise the quick golf vacations.

Will Myrtle Beach golf continue to suffer? Nah. Pine Lakes Country Club just went though a $15 million restoration on the course and clubhouse, which will only drive more traffic to the classic course. Pine Lakes, also known as the Granddaddy, used to be the Ocean Forest Club, so if there is any history to share, it is definitely that course.

All in all, since Myrtle Beach is less reliant on corporate golf travel (and has been) and more focused on golf groups and family golf vacations, I see the overall value of a golf vacation in this area to be the biggest attraction of all.

Condolux and North Myrtle Beach Golf.com would like to congratulate Former Coastal Carolina University golfer Jay McAllister is being recognized for two rare milestones in one shot June 17 during the Grand Strand Pro-Am at Arrowhead Country Club.

McAllister made a hole-in-one double eagle on the 350-yard par-4 fourth hole on Arrowhead Country Club's Lakes Course, and he'll be receiving an award from tournament organizers at 11 a.m. Friday at Arrowhead.

McAllister drove over trees on the dogleg hole and the ball rolled into the cup while players in the group ahead were on the green.

GSGDA 18th Annual Golf Tournament in Myrtle Beach

The Grand Strand Golf Directors Association will be hosting its 18th Annual Ronald Mansell Padgett Memorial Golf Tournament at Wild Wing Plantation, sponsored by U-Save of Myrtle Beach and Anchor Taxi as our Corporate Partner. This years event will be held at Wild Wing Plantation in Myrtle Beach. There will be an 8:30 am shotgun start with outstanding food & beverage sponsors such as Dick's Last Resort, Ruth's Chris, Ultimate California Pizza, Damon's, Le`Grande and Tommy Bahama. The cost is $100.00 per golfer and benefits the GSGDA own scholarship fund.

The Hurricane Tour was founded with the intention of providing junior golfers between the ages of 10-19 an opportunity to play exceptional courses in a competitive environment. Two of the Myrtle Beach areas most scenic golf courses are closing for the Summer for course renovations. Rivers Edge Golf Club which is in Shallotte,North Carolina and is one of four Arnold Palmer Design Golf Clubs. The other three are, The World Famous Kings North, Southcreek and the West course at Myrtle Beach National Facility.

Rivers Edge Golf Club for years has been known as one of the Best Layouts in Myrtle Beach, However, the golf course has always been known for never being in good condition. In 2006, Rivers Edge was nominated #62 by Golf Digest has one of the "Top 100 Public Courses in America". Rivers Edge Golf Club closed June 1st with plans to re-open August 1, 2009 with new paspalum greens. If successful Rivers Edge Golf Club will be the most northern golf course in the country with paspalum greens. Currently it is Pine Lakes Country Club in Myrtle Beach with wall to wall paspalum grass.

Tidewater Golf Club and Plantation will also be closing on June 22nd and plans to reopen August 1st. Recently rated 41st in Golf Digest's ranking of America's greatest public courses, Tidewater Golf Club in North Myrtle Beach has been known for its conditioning and layout until the past few years getting bad reviews.

With a little TLC both of these great layouts will again rise to the Top rankings for Myrtle Beach Golf and throughout the country.

Pearl Golf Links is The Jewel of Brunswick County but a Gem for Myrtle Beach Golf.

Last week we were invited out to play The Pearl Golf Links, which is 36-hole facility, Located in the "Seafood Capital of the World", just north of Myrtle Beach in Calabash, North Carolina.

ThePearl sits on a 900 acre marsh preserve along the Calabash River. Although I have played the Pearl East Course which is a parkland style Dan Maples layout while the West is a links style course that was awarded "Best New Public Course in 1988" by Golf Digest. On this particular day we played the Pearl West Course, and from the start the golf course was in EXCELLENT CONDITION from tee to green, The wind, which is always a factor in Myrtle Beach Golf, is in play on every hole at the Par 72 Dan Maples design.

The final four, 15th - 18th on the West Course are among the best in Myrtle Beach SC Golf and in Brunswick County Golf, North Carolina. The 15th hole is a slight dog leg left down hill into the teeth of the wind coming off the Calabash River. The 16th is a 604 yard Par 5 with marsh along the right side and deep woods down the left side. The 17th is a short uphill Par 3 that requires another wind check and a good golf shot to get it close as this green has a huge mound on the left side of the green, The 18th hole is another Par 5 that is a Double Dog Leg with water along the right side which comes back across the fairway in front of the green.

The Pearl has been called "The Jewel of Brunswick County" but it is also a gem for great Myrtle Beach Golf.

Myrtle Beach Fires and the Barefoot Resort

The Grand Strand faced the biggest wildfire in the State of South Carolina in more than three decades. The wildfire has consumed 20,500 acres in Horry County since Wednesday afternoon. The Barefoot Resort took on the most damage. Homes were destroyed by a wildfire that was four miles wide and got within 1½ miles of Route 17.

The Barefoot Resort has closed the Barefoot Fazio and the Barefoot Love for at least two weeks. The Barefoot Norman and Barefoot Dye shall remain open and are both in EXCELLENT CONDITION.

The Greg Norman design features seven holes along the Intracoastal Waterway and the Pete Dye has recently been nominated as one of seven Myrtle Beach golf courses in the Top 100.

Litchfield Country Club

I got a chance to play Litchfield Country Club last week for the first time and those of you that followed my round on Twitter, got see the wheels fall off just like Kenny Perry at the Masters. The classic Willard Byrd design which opened in 1966 on the south end of Myrtle Beach was one of the original eight golf courses in Myrtle Beach.

The Willard Byrd design carved through giant oaks draped with Spanish moss has several dog legs and elevated greens, classic style bunkers with little water and few carries make the course challenging. Great mid range Par 3`s and reachable Par 5`s give you a chance to score. The 18th hole is a member of the Grand Strands 100 greatest holes.

Course condition and greens were both great for this top rated "Woman Friendly Golf Course" but will challenge even the low handicappers and long hitters. You can play Litchfield Country Club along with its sister course, River Club on the Masters Signature, Myrtle Beach National Package.

"BEAR"FOOT Resort

The spring time in Myrtle Beach is the best time for great Myrtle Beach golf. Golfers from all over tend to flock to the Golf Capital of the World. The weather is great, the drinks at happy hour are flowing and golf courses are in top notch shape. For those golfers that are not the low handicappers or are trying to be the next Tiger Woods, take caution of not only the hacker in your group, but also the South Carolina wildlife.

The South Carolina Coast boasts a wide variety of animals. We have everything from alligators to some of the most poisonous snakes in the world from Copperheads to Rattlesnakes. We even have the "Worlds Largest Crocodile" at Alligator Adventure in Barefoot Landing. Why do we care so much about the South Carolina wildlife you may ask?

Arnette and I recently were invited to play BEAR FOOT Resort twice over the last month. Both the Davis Love course and Tom Fazio course were in excellent condition (You would know if you have been following our blog post). HOWEVER, I did fail to mention the twosome that joined us on the back nine of the Love Course.

Needless to say, think twice before walking into any hazard, because you never know if this twosome is waiting on you!

Barefoot Fazio at Barefoot Resort in North Myrtle Beach

The Barefoot Fazio course at Barefoot Resort in North Myrtle Beach, SC is one of the the Top 10 golf courses in Myrtle Beach. In fact, Golf Digest has the Tom Fazio design, ranked #6 on its Myrtle Beach Top Course Rankings. The Par 71 which opened in 2000, measures just over 6800 from the back tees, has five Par 3`s and 4 Par 5`s. This is the third of Fazio`s golf course designs in Myrtle Beach. The first being the private club at Wachesaw Plantation and the second being the TPC of Myrtle Beach.

This top Myrtle Beach Golf Course has wide fairways, huge waste bunkers with some measuring from the tee to green. Barefoot Fazio starts with a short Par 4 and its all up hill after that, literally. The second is a long Par 4, dogleg left that gives you a long second shot up hill, the third is a long Par 3 that is over wetlands, and surrounded by a "Famous Fazio Waste Bunker". This theme continues through out this amazing design. Natural and man made elevation changes through the South Carolina wetlands gives golfers great challenges and requires golfers to hit every club in the bag.
