There are a couple of events to mark your calendars for in the coming weeks. The Rejoice! Children’s Choir will be singing in the morning worship services on May 13, 2012. I hope you will share in my excitement as I look forward to hearing our young ones lead us into worship that morning.

Also, the Celebration Choir is hard at work preparing for their final concert of the season before the summer break. Make plans to join us on Sunday evening, June 3, 2012 at 6:00 p.m., in the Northpoint Auditorium, for the concert, How Can I Keep From Singing: A Celebration of Early American Music. The performance will feature music from the 1750s to early 1900s that reflects the early American musical traditions that came out of the Shaker movement, the Revolutionary War, and the Civil War. You will hear the beginning sounds of bluegrass, jazz, and some favorite hymn tunes. Joining the choir will be a world-class banjo player.

Be with us for a celebration of music that captures the history of the early years of America! — Marvin Engstrom

1. THE NATURE OF DOUBT Mark 8:1-21
2. AN EXAMPLE OF MISSIONAL PRIORITY
3. Mission implies: 1) Being sent and 2) Being assigned a specific task.
4. “If everything is mission, nothing is mission.” Stephen Neill
5. Disciple-making, while being the church’s primary mission, does not happen at the expense of caring for the vulnerable.
6. “Yes, Jesus performed miracles…but the Gospels actually downplay them. Though he never denied someone who asked for a physical healing, he always turned down requests for a demonstration to amaze crowds and impress important people. Jesus recognized early on that the excitement generated by miracles did not readily convert into life-changing faith.” Philip Yancey
7. Acts of compassion, beneficence, even miracles are not sufficient to lead people to faith. Faith comes through the preaching of the gospel.
8. “The disciples [response] indicates that Jesus has not left the opposition behind with the Pharisees on the lakeshore. It is with him in the boat…in the bewildering misunderstanding of his own disciples.” James Edwards
9. “What lay before this little band of disciples…was the danger of allowing their thinking about Jesus to be approximated and assimilated to that of the world around them.” Alan Cole
10. Biblical faith is confidence singularly placed in the person of Jesus, as he has revealed himself to be.

Join us as John Sloan takes us through the first passage in this book, verse by verse.

As we also prepare for communion, we will be singing about the amazing love that Jesus has for us. I never cease to be amazed that He took my sin upon Himself, died on the cross to pay my penalty for it, and not only that, but gave me His righteousness, that I might be restored to a right relationship with God. Hallelujah! Sing praise!

**A very important reminder: if you don’t want to be late, be sure that you set your clocks forward by one hour on Saturday night! It may be the fifth year that Daylight Savings Time starts on the second Sunday of March, but it still feels early to me (…and I don’t think I’m the only one!).
