Dear Parents and Players,

If your a player receiving this please pass this along to your parents, if your a parent receiving this please pass this along to your player. I hope you had a great Memorial Day weekend. Below is the schedule for the summer. For everyone that doesn’t think H.S. player’s get enough training or ice time, this should squash that notion. We have hired a strength and conditioning coach who has a ton of knowledge concerning off-ice training and will be a huge asset and addition to our staff. Costs for things like camp, tourney’s and Kent State will soon follow. If you know of anyone who should be receiving this but hasn’t, please forward this on. I’ve tried to gather as many of the email addresses as possible and I’m sure I’ve missed a few, thanks.

June
6/10/09
Off-ice workouts will begin at the rink on this date. We will be doing off-ice training on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday throughout the summer until quite time begins in August. This may be more important than the on-ice work that we will get this summer. We need to get bigger, stronger and faster than we were last year.

*6/19/09
4:00 - 5:50 p.m.
8:00 - 8:50 p.m.

*6/20/09
9:30 - 10:50 a.m.
1:00 - 2:20 p.m.

*6/21/09
10:00 - 11:50 a.m.

6/26/09 - 6/28/09
H.S. tournament @ Tamo. Times TBA

July
7/10/09 - 7/12/09
Kent State Weekend. This weekend is spent on the Kent State Campus where we will stay in the dorms. We will practice Friday night and Saturday morning. We will also play two games on Saturday and two games on Sunday. We are currently taking applications for “dorm dads” to look over the kids while we are there. The exact schedule should be sent to me soon.

*7/17/09
4:00 - 5:20 p.m.

*7/18/09
8:00 - 9:20 a.m.
12:00 - 1:00 p.m.

*7/19/09
3:00 - 4:50 p.m.

7/24/09 - 7/26/09
H.S. Tournament @ Tamo. Times TBA

*7/29/09
3:00-4:50 p.m.

* These dates mark the times that we will be holding our camp. This year we are going to spread this over a couple of weekends rather than hold it during one, one week period. We feel this will be more beneficial towards the development of the players. All ice times will be at Tamo Shanter, we will have classroom sessions during the breaks in our on-ice development as well as food for the boys throughout the weekends.

August
There is a couple week period in August that is reserved for “quite time” and there will be no communication between the coaching staff and the players. Once the “quite time” has subsided, we will be resuming our off-ice training. Captains practices will begin in September and run up to tryouts. Off-ice training is recommended during said “quite time”.

If you have any questions please feel free to contact me. Have a great summer, I look forward to the development of the players during this time and a successful season next year.

Go Cats!
Coach Jones

The Northview Wildcats will play in their 4th district final in 5 years Saturday night after an emotion draining 6-5 OT thriller this past Saturday at Tam-o-Shanter. Northview will face the St. Johns Titans at 7 for a chance to go to Columbus for the frozen four.

The Cats jumped out to a 5-0 lead mid-way through the second period and held a 5-1 lead with just over 6 minutes left in the 3rd before a flurry of Findlay goals sent the game into the extra session. Sophomore forward Cody Booth would rescue the Cats and send the Northview faithful into hysteria with the game winner.

Northview held a 2-0 lead after 1 period of play with goals from Booth and an end to end rush from Sophomore defenseman Tyler Harding. Kyle Hymore converted a 2 on 1 with Nolan Culver to push it to 3-0. Northview then took what seemed control of the game by scoring 2 short handed goals for a 5-0 lead. First Hymore stole the puck and beat Findlay goalie Travis Friar with a second effort, then Harding got loose for a short-handed break away and the 5-0 lead. Findlay started their comeback effort with a goal to close out the middle frame and a 5-1 Cats lead.

Northview seemed to be controlling the 3rd period and cruising towards a district final match-up when the wheels fell off at the 6 minute mark of the 3rd. A scrum in front of the net on a Findlay Power play started a series of 4 goals in just over 2 minutes that had the Cats reeling. Northview was able to gather themselves and Coach Jones settled his players for an overtime session. Thats when Booth stole the spotlight and sent the Cats to the district final with his rising shot from just inside the blue line.

Northviews previous 3 district final appearances have all come against St. Francis. This will be the 2nd year that the Cats and St. Johns will meet in playoff action. Tickets for Saturday nights game are on sale at Tam-o-Shanter, and may sell out. Get your tickets early and help support your Cats in their efforts to get back to Columbus. Good luck Cats and Congratulations!

The Wildcats were riding a wave of momentum heading into the final game of the regular season this past weekend. At stake was a league championship as the Cats hosted the St. Johns Titans on senior night.

Unfortunately the Cats produced their only magical moments before the drop of the first puck as Seniors Jordan Keefe, Cody Ramm, Jake Thornton, Nile Culver, Matt Duvall, Bob Napierala and Kyle Hymore were all honored for their dedication to the Northview family.

As far as the game, the Cats played more like the team from December through Mid-January rather than the team that had rattled off 5 straight wins to earn a chance for the league crown. 6 unanswered goals by the Titans produced a lop-sided win and the Cats settled for a 2nd place finish in the NHC. On a bright note the Cats have now finished either 1st or 2nd in the league for 4 consecutive seasons, including 2 league titles. Furthermore their 38-10-2 record over the past 5 years is good for a 79.2 winning % best in the league. Since the start of the decade Northview has finished lower than 2nd just 3 times in 9 years, 2 of those being 3rd place finishes.

Northview will move on to postseason play this Thursday as they host Ottawa Hills @ 6 o’ clock at Tam-o-SHanter. Good luck in the post season Cats.

The Northview Wildcats have a showdown with the St. Johns titans this Saturday night with a league title at stake. Northview leap frogged the Titans with a 3 to 2 overtime win in BG Sunday and now has a chance to claim their 3rd league title in 4 years.

BG jumped out to a 1-0 lead on a goal from a point shot 4 minutes into the first period. Mark Hall would get the Cats going with a power play goal with about 4 minutes left in the period to knot the game at 1 after 1.

Northview would claim their first lead of the contest when Junior Shane Wheatley scored at the 13:05 mark of the second period. It looked as though the Cats would go to the locker room with that lead, but a turnover near the end of the period led to a BG goal and tied it at 2 after the second.

The Cats would send 18 shots at the Bobcats goal in the third period but were unable to find the back of the net. However as time expired the Cats were rewarded a penalty shot as a BG defender covered the puck in the crease. With no time left on the clock BG goalie Nick Morris sent the game to OT with a nice glove hand save on Matt Duvall.

In the OT the Cats did what they have been doing lately and picked-up their teammate. Unfazed by the penalty shot the Cats took it to BG and were rewarded as Bob Napierala’s hard work led to a power play. Sophomore Graham Kelsey picked a great time for his first career goal. His rising blast from the point found the upper corner and sealed the win for the Cats!!!

Northview now heads into their final regular season game with the league title in the balance. With a win over St. Johns the Cats would claim an outright title in the Northwest Hockey Conference. The game is scheduled for Saturday night @ 9:00 at Tam-o-Shanter. This game may sell out so get your tickets early. Good luck and go get em’ Cats!!!

The win also helped the Cats claim the Mayors cup as winner of the season series between the Sylvania schools, Northview had won an earlier league game 3-2 back in December.

The Cats would jump out to an early lead on a goal by Anthony Holley. After delivering a big hit on the forecheck, Anthony was rewarded on the turnover deep in the Cougars end and capitalized for the Cats.

Southview would score the next 2 goals to take a 2-1 lead mid-way through the second period. Nolan Culver took over the game at that moment. His hat trick coupled with a Kyle Hymore goal would give the Cats 4 unanswered goals in the win.

The defense played an inspired game with 2 teammates out of the lineup. Tyler Harding, Jordan Jones, Graham Kelsey, Brent Easton and Dalton Carter all stepped up their games to help goalie Austin Gryca earn the victory.

The Northview icers claimed their 3rd NHC win in a row this past Friday night with a 3 to 1 win over St. Francis. The win coupled by a St. Johns loss and tie has the Cats in position to control their own destiny for a league title. Northview has 3 games remaining and must win out against Southview, B.G. and the Johnies for the title.

On Friday night Northview jumped on top of the Knights on a first period goal from Shane Wheatley. His centering pass deflected home for the early lead. Northview gave up the tying goal off a short handed effort by the Knights at the beginning of the 2nd period. The game remained tied until the 3rd period when a Sophomore connection gave the Cats the game-winner. Tyler Harding scooped up a loose puck just inside of the Frannies zone and found fellow Sophomore Nolan Culver with a nice back door pass and goal. Kyle Hymore continued his bid for a league scoring title with a empty net goal to seal it for the Cats. Freshmen Austin Gryca continued his recent hot play in stopping 23 shots for the win.

Northview will go after the Mayor’s cup this Saturday against SV at Tam-o- shanter before heading down to BG for a Sunday afternoon affair with the Bobcats. Congratulations Cats and Good luck!

The Wildcats put together their best back to back games since late November this past weekend to earn 2 victories in conference play.
On Friday night the Cats squared off against St. Francis. Matt Duvall got the Cats going with his 1st period goal. Jordan Keefe and Josh Krispin were rewarded for their hardwork with assist on the goal. The game stayed that way until early in the 3rd period when Kyle Hymore took a stretch pass from Jordan Jones and connected on a break-away for a 2-0 lead. That was all that Freshmen Austin Gryca and the team defense would need. Austin needed to stop just 10 shots in the shutout win. From the defense to the forwards blocked shots were the story of the game for the Cats.

On Saturday night the Cats had a rematch with Findlay. After losing earlier this season down in Findlay the Cats were out for a better performance. Tyler Harding staked the Cats to a 1-0 lead after 1 period of play. Northview would strike for 2 goals in just a 35 second span of the 2nd period to grab a 3-0 lead. First Freshman Brent Easton scored on the power play for his first career goal, then Nile Culver scored off a pretty pass from his brother Nolan. Findlay would close to within 3-1 after 2 periods. Kyle Hymore would finish off the Trojans with 2 goals in the 3rd period and the final score of 5-1. Gryca stood tall once again in the win stopping 20 of 21 shots.

The 2 wins catapulted the Cats from last place to a 2nd place tie in the NHC. They will have a conference rematch with St. Francis this Friday at 7 at Tam-o-Shanter.

If nothing else this season the Wildcats are consitent in being inconsistent. Their up and down roller coaster of a season continued in Meadville Pennsylvania this past weekend with a win sandwiched in between two bad losses.

In the first game the Cats were handled by Pennsylvania power LaSalle 8-2.The lone bright spots were goals from Anthony Holley and Matt Duvall. Holley was able to find the net of a nice pass from Jordan Keefe, while Duvall connected on the power play.

The next morning the Cats would get some revenge on Mt. Lebanon. Northview lost an earlier meeting 7 to 1 to Lebanon and watched as players performed some goal celebrations to rub it in the Cats face. After falling behind 2 to 0 and then 3 to 1 the Cats rebounded for a nice 4-3 win. Tyler Harding started the scoring for the Cats with a power play goal. Matt Duvall’s goal brought the Cats to within 3-2 after 2 periods of play, and the Cats would win it in the third. First senior Jake Thornton tied the score at 3 and then while on a 5 on 3 advantage, Kyle Hymore one-timed a pass from Harding for the game winner. Matt Stevenson played solid in goal for the win.

That evening the Cats tried to build off the momentum from the Lebanon win only to lose badly to St. Edwards. Nothing went right and after a solid start, which included a shot off the post and some near misses, the Cats would be on the short end of a 8-0 loss.

The Cats will try and get the roller coaster going back up the hill this weekend as they take on St. Francis Friday and Findlay Saturday in NHC play. Both games are at 7 O’Clock at Tam-o-Shanter.
