Northwest United Wins Silver at 2010 OWG

At the 2010 Ontario Winter Games (OWG), Northwest United won the Silver, with Eastern winning Gold in an exciting 3-1 Final.

Congratulations to Eastern Region on winning Gold, Western on winning Bronze, and to all our fellow competitors for fabulous exciting ringette.

As Muskoka blogger Jenn Jilks commented here "...It is great seeing the young ladies learn how to play fair, play hard, and use their skills. Things sure have changed - our young women used to be afraid to be seen as strong, tough and athletic, as well as smart!"

Our OWG Silver caps a very successful AAA season. Northwest United was the only team to advance to the final in all 3 Challenge Cups as well as the OWG, and we won silvers in all (West Ferris, St. Marys & Kingston).

Our OWG round robin record was 4 wins and 1 loss, which put us in a 2-way tie with Eastern for 1st place (see drawboard below). However, since our one loss was to Eastern, they placed first, and we were second. Western finished third, after a 3-1 mini-game win over Southern. On Sunday morning, we defeated Western 4-3 in the Bronze medal game, to advance to the final against Eastern.

The Northwest United AAA team represents the northwest Ontario region.

Joining northwest Ontario players from Dryden and Atikokan are players from Jordan, St. Clements, Barrie, Etobicoke, Richmond Hill, Pickering, Whitby, Ottawa, Nepean and Gloucester.

With ringette athletes residing across Ontario, you might be thinking, how do these players get together to train? Isn't it costly to practice and play in northwest Ontario?

Logistics were certainly a challenge. The team met one weekend a month for 2 intensive days of ringette team practice. Although we'd love to travel to the northwest, more central locales have been selected for these practices, such as Ajax, Whitby, St. Clements and Ottawa.

Elite ringette players do have to cover their own costs. We are grateful for the sponsors who have helped us fund our participation.

Kingston - Northwest United Wins Third Silver Medal

In the third Ringette Challenge Cup of the 2009-2010 season, Kingston Ringette Challenge Cup, the Northwest United AAA Ringette Team won its third Silver Medal, with undefeated Southern winning gold in a 4-3 game.

Our round robin record was 3 wins, 1 tie and 1 loss (7 pts), which put us in a 2-way tie with Eastern for 2nd place, who had 2 wins and 3 ties (7 pts). Because Northwest had one more win, we were awarded 2nd place. We are proud to be the only team to advance to the Final in all three tournaments.

The Northwest AAA Ringette Team is a Regional All-Star (AAA) Team competing at the Ontario Winter Games in Muskoka Region March 4-7, 2010.

Our opponents will be the other 5 Regional ringette teams. We will have played all 5 teams at the three Challenge Cup tournaments before we meet them at the Ontario Winter Games.

Athletes will be staying in the Athletes village.

Fans, friends and family will be staying at hotels in Gravenhurst, particularly since the Opening Ceremonies on the evening of March 4 will be at the Muskoka Wharf in Gravenhurst. Last we checked, the best hotel accommodation deals appear to be at the Marriott Residence Inn and Howard Johnson hotel. The Marriott Residence Inn hotel is right on the Wharf, close to the opening ceremonies.
Hint: Do check the specials for the Marriott Residence Inn.

St Marys 2009 - Northwest United Wins Second Silver

In the second Ringette Challenge Cup of the 2009-2010 season, St Marys Ringette Challenge Cup, the Northwest United AAA Ringette Team won its second Silver Medal, with undefeated Eastern winning gold in a 5-3 game.

Our round robin record was 3 wins and 2 losses, which put us in a 3-way tie with Western and Southern for 2nd place. Goals for/against amongst the teams were used to break the tie, and Northwest was awarded 2nd place.

Ringette Shot Clock for Volunteers

One of our Northwest AAA team parents noticed this tweet by Julie McLeod @haju, asking "@ringettecanada Are there any resources to help a shot clock newbie understand the intricacies of the rules and avoid getting hollered at?"

Here's a Shot Clock DO's and DON'Ts guide that was created for the parents of a Tween AA team last year (our shot clock operators). It's too long to post on Twitter, so it's being shared here. If you (or any readers) have any questions, please feel free to post in the comments section to this post.

Shot Clock for Volunteers

DO reset the shot clock if:

The ref signals a reset.
A player from the opposite team stabs the ring, or bats it, or kicks it.
The ref signals a delayed penalty.
(If another delayed penalty happens before the whistle blows on the first one, you do not reset again).
The ring contacts the goalie in the crease.
The ring contacts the goalie outside the crease and would have gone in the net if it hadn’t hit the goalie.
The ring hits the post or crossbar.

DO NOT reset the clock:

Unless you see one of the things in the list above!
If you aren’t sure, don’t reset.
The ref will let you know if you missed it.
If both of you miss it, it didn’t happen.
If you think one of the things in the list above is about to happen.
Don’t anticipate it, wait for it!
If a shot was in the general direction of the net, but did not hit the net or the goalie.
If the shot hit the side or back of the net or went over the net.
Only a post or a crossbar are resets.
If the ring merely deflects off a player’s skate, stick, or leg.
They have to direct it for it to be a reset (unless we are talking about the goalie).
When the whistle blows.
If the ref stops the play, stop the shot clock.
But do not reset it until you see that the stoppage has resulted in a change of possession.
If the same team has it after the whistle as before the whistle, it is not a reset. If in doubt, don’t reset it. The ref will tell you to reset if it is appropriate before she restarts the play.

The ref is the boss. If she signals a reset, you must reset, even if you don’t think it should be. If you reset when you shouldn’t, play goes on. Just hope no one noticed.

If you hear someone shouting “Reset!!”, make sure it’s the ref and not just a coach or parent expressing their opinion.

If a reset occurs when there are fewer than 30 seconds left in the period, reset the clock and then stop it with 30 on the display.

The shot clock operator should be in a penalty box or the timekeeper’s box and should be able to see the play anywhere on the ice. The shot clock operator should sign the game sheet and should refrain (as much as possible) from cheering for one side (since the shot clock operator is a minor official, and should be impartial).

Scribblelive on Dragons' Den

We used Scribblelive during the West Ferris Challenge Cup to keep everyone up to date about our team's progress in North Bay, and will be doing it again at the St. Marys tournament.

Scribblelive was on CBC's Dragons' Den, on November 4th at 8 pm EST (Season 4, Episode 6) and liveblogged during/afer the episode.

In the Dragons' Den, entrepreneurs pitch their business' products or services to a panel of five Canadian business people, who decide whether to invest money in the business pitched.

Three of the dragons, Arlene, Jim, and Kevin, agreed to invest $250,000 for 30% of the company. Congratulations, Scribblelive!

Exhibition Game Against Richmond Hill NRL

September Team Practice Weekend

The Northwest United AAA Ringette Team will be re-grouping in the Ajax area for their next practice weekend September 12-13.

It'll be another jam-packed weekend. In addition to drills, dryland and strategy sessions, the team has two exhibition games:

Saturday, Sept 12 at the Ajax Community Centre (ACC) at 2 pm against a combined Ajax/Whitby ringette team
Sunday, Sept 13, 11:30 am again at the ACC, against Richmond Hill Lightning, Richmond Hill's National Ringette League (NRL) team.

August Practice Weekend Hilites

Northwest United AAA met in Ajax this past weekend for their first ringette practice as a team. Many have already been conversing on their player-only Facebook group, so they weren't complete strangers when they met for the first time as a full team on Saturday morning.

Many thanks to the Raymonds for hosting the 'player house' this weekend. They (and Marj) cooked up a storm for both players and parents on Saturday evening.
