style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

With the cold weather in full swing, my most recent blog ambition post for The Kit focuses on keeping those hands soft. Enjoy!

I can’t stand hand cream. I hate the greasy feeling.
I hate the feeling of not being able to touch my phone after, or my
face, or my computer. The list goes on.

While I’ve tried to keep my hands shielded from the cold in the
winter with gloves, it hasn’t been enough. I will endure chapped,
cracked, rough old lady hands, rather than get into a daily routine of
putting hand cream on. Okay, I apologize; I bet old ladies have
softer hands than me.

Then I met Cake Beauty’s Milk Made Velveteen Hand Cream. The
cream was a gift from my lovely aunt for Christmas, so I decided to
give it a shot. I mean it would be rude not to, right?

This cream took the cake (cliché intended) and left
me cured of my reluctance toward the daily ritual. With its slightly
sweet smell of marshmallows and warm milk, and
non-greasy application (crucial to my new found love) I
was hooked.

These days, I look forward to the ritual; it has even become a mini
stress reliever during the day. I’ve also noticed that my skin
and nails have never looked or felt better.

Now if only I could shake hands with myself.

Maybe it's the bitter winds that cut through our crimson cheeks, or the repetitive motion of putting on layer upon layer without thought. Maybe it's the loss of freedom that comes from the days of leaving the house with drenched hair and bare, squirmy toes. Perhaps it's the dark mornings and the darker evenings that make even the smallest infraction of the human spirit a cause to hide under down-filled comforters until the snooze button goes off, yet again. There are many things that leave us heavy in our minds, in our hearts, or even in our sinuses. This week's mantra can't really be explained. I read it, I liked it. Here's to feeling heavy.

“This is what the things can teach us:
to fall,
patiently to trust our heaviness.
Even a bird has to do that
before he can fly.”

— Rilke

Looking for some new music? One of my favourite contributors Bronte gives us her lowdown on what to listen to on a Sunday afternoon. As per her post - I'm usually the one who can't peel herself from under the comforter. Gotta love the weekend. Enjoy xo

By: Bronte Martin

Where one is situated on a Sunday morning can tell a lot about their personality.

Are you someone to be curled up with a good book and a steaming cup of Saigon Chai? Or would you be out on an early morning stroll with someone who matters the most? I’m sure there’s someone out there who is simply unable to peel yourself out from under that heavenly comforter. You might possibly (or quite probably) be suffering from a minor headache at this time, and the only thing that beats a tall glass of water and extra-strength Advil is music.

With 2012 fully in stow, January is a great month to see (or hear) things in a new light. I have always dedicated my Sunday mornings to hunting down new music in quite an obsessive fashion. On such occasions, I tend to gravitate towards light-hearted acoustics and powerful yet raw vocals. You could either be giving up on my musical taste right at this moment (yes, I’m talking to you head-bangers), or be intrigued, but please, give me a chance.

Here are six recommendations that could act as an addition (or establishment) of your 2012 iTunes “Sunday Sound” play list. You may find yourself completely relaxed, bobbing your head in approval or shutting down your computer after the sound of the first bridge, but hey, at least you gave it a try.

1. Rising – Lhasa De Sela
Hoarse yet delicate, Lhasa De Sela’s voice is undeniably unique. As one of the biggest inspirations of my favourite singer Patrick Watson, I am just as big of a fan of Lhasa as he is. As a little taste of her musical abilities, take this in.

2. Somebody That I Used To Know – Gotye ft. Kimbra
Recently surfacing, Gotye nails this catchy happy-go-lucky tune with quirky riffs and steady vocals. The lyrics are (almost) too easily applicable to just about everyone’s life (at some point or other) and the contrast between his and Kimbra’s voice is brilliant. Mark my words; you won’t be able to keep this out of your head.

3. Sit Down Beside Me – Patrick Watson
I don’t think it’s physically possible to put into words how much I recommend Patrick Watson as a Sunday morning listen. Better yet, all day, everyday, no matter the hour or caliber of ringing ears. His voice is pure honey complimented by the acoustics of The Wooden Arms (who he regularly collaborates with). You could say this is a musical match made in heaven. Seeing him in concert, up close and personal? All the better.

4. Civilian – Wye Oak
Emotion, emotion, emotion. Oh, and awesome guitar riffs. That basically sums up what you’re about to be surrounded by, with a hint of genius. Think a toned down version of The Silversun Pickups. Enjoy.

5. Drops in the River – Fleet Foxes
If you think you’ve heard harmony, think again. Fleet Foxes redefine this very notion with a sense of effortlessness leaving their listeners in paralysis. Folk, blues, acoustic, indie or are they baroque pop? Decide for yourself what is best suited. I’m warning you, it’s hard to put their sound into words, let alone label it.

6. You Already Know – Bombay Bicycle Club
Finishing off with the mellowest of all. Listening to BBC is always a spirit lifter. Simplistic yet upbeat, the London-based band proves that going back to basics doesn’t always have to be, well, basic. This is most definitely their least “dancey” of the lot, but as a listener, you’ve got a whole spectrum to choose from. It’s like one stop shopping with these guys.

Wanting more? Well maybe take advice from the procrastinator herself and spend YOUR Sunday morning behind a computer screen. In the wise words of Anna Wintour AKA Meryl Streep, that is all.

Ever wonder how to get your finances in order? Not A Model contributor, Jenny shares her experience. Enjoy!

By: Jennifer Choy

For as long as I can remember, I’ve had expensive taste. I enjoy English riding lessons, well-tailored clothing, an expertly crafted croissant and brunching at restaurants that remind me of Paris. So you can imagine my surprise when I realized that my budget was much more aligned with Walmart than Jimmy Choo.

At the gentle coaxing of a friend, I went to the bank and received alarming news about my bank account: I in fact do not have a money tree nor am I the inventor of some seemingly useless but wildly popular invention like the Snuggie or the Slap Chop.

My saviour came in the form of a wonderful eastern European goddess of money management. Okay, she was more of a part-time financial advisor at TD but the point is, she got through to a serious princess living a champagne life on a Lakeport 24 budget. Yep, I’m not even talking fancy beer here.

“Okay, well this isn’t so bad and it’s definitely fixable,” says my new financial advisor, cheerfully skimming my account history juxtaposed with an expression of mild confusion as to how I could possibly think that purchasing a Louis Vuitton bag was a good idea.

On this very eye-opening day, I was given a budget, a concept that’s as alien to me as grooming is for Russell Brand. Somehow, I need to figure out how to mould my life of luxury around rigid constraints.

And so begins my year of frugality, saving and being happy with what I have rather than wanting what I don’t have. Many of my posts for Not A Model Blog will revolve around my new-found affinity for the simple things, amazing style finds that won’t cost you your first born child and maybe I’ll even build enough credibility to give a few financial tips.

Wish me luck!

While most people have come to know me through this blog, you may also feel like you know her. Stefania's presence has always been on Not A Model through her fantastic photography and our ridiculous photo shoots. While she probably would prefer if I didn't publicly embarrass her with a "Happy Birthday" post, I can't help it. When we were discussing this milestone birthday, she was a bit apprehensive about it.

First off, I don't tolerate people who don't embrace their birthdays.

I said, in some words or another, "Don't be one of those people who dread growing older, and obsess over a number. There is so much to look forward to; it can only get better."

I believe that every year is another opportunity to learn something new, to try something new and to grow. No matter what age you are turning, the gratitude should come from being able to live, breathe and see what another year can bring. (I know, I know, come and talk to me in a few months when I turn the same age.)

I know she'd kill me if I pasted a giant photo of her under this post, so instead you'll find a mini-collage with a variety of our photo shoots spanning over the last five years. She's always been a great supporter of my blog and I want to wish her the happiest of days today.

So here's to you miss - I can't wait to see what trouble we get in with the next 25. xx
It’s called a LUXE BOX from Loose Button. For only $12.00 a month, a box is sent to you, filled with 4 or 5 beauty products to try out. The best part? There is NO shipping charge.

I’m currently waiting to receive my first Luxe Box and I cannot wait! They feature brands like Lancome, Stila, Cheeky Monkey, Dermalogica, and Essie. I love trying new nail polishes, mascaras, and face washes. I think the best part about these Luxe Boxes is that I get to treat myself for less than $15.00 a month. I don’t usually spend money on myself unless it's on books or something I really need. Even then it kind of hurts to see any money leave my bank account. My mom, sister, and even my boyfriend make fun of me for that. They always tell me that I work hard for my money and if I want to treat myself to something once a month, I should. Well, Mom, Jess, and BF I agree. I work hard for my money so I better treat myself right.

Don’t feel guilty for treating yourself. If you can afford to do it, try to do something for yourself on a monthly basis. Give yourself a gift this month whether it be a Luxe Box, a manicure, a haircut, or a pair of shoes you’ve been drooling over. You deserve it.

As I previously mentioned, I’m part of a monthly book club with some of my PR school girls. While I’ve missed a few of the books, (or have been too busy to read) this month I can’t seem to tear my eyes away from the page. The book, “The Rules of Civility” focuses on a young woman's experience living and working in the publishing industry in New York in the thirties. Yes, I know it is shocking that I would like this. (drip drip sarcasm)

Anyways, I’m devouring the book, and I came upon a quote that struck me as something to share for this week’s mantra.

“Whatever setbacks he had faced in life, he said, however daunting or dispiriting the unfolding of events, he always knew that he would make it through, as long as when he woke in the morning he was looking forward to his first cup of coffee."

"When a person loses the ability to take pleasure in the mundane – the cigarette on the stoop or the gingersnap in the bath - she has probably put herself in unnecessary danger.” Amor Towles.

With this in mind, it's time to remind yourself of the small things in life that make you happy. Lately, I find myself thinking along the road to the future; to far off places or to reaching milestones, that I can miss out on the daily sparks of happiness in my life. It’s the small things - finding a new favourite song, receiving a long awaited response in an inbox, the morning jaunt to work, a fresh pair of socks, a warm cup of green tea, climbing into a warm bed with new sheets, a large spoon of Nutella. Maybe some of those are my simple pleasures, but what are yours? Remember the little moments that make you happy. They will repeat often, and bring you back to the present moment. Most of all, they will remind you why you are here. The rest will sort itself out.

Happy week everyone.

xx
Looking for a winter beauty boost? Below is my latest post for The Kit. Enjoy!

When champagne flutes are empty and the charm of the snow has worn off, the post-holiday blues can set in and make anyone feel less than beautiful. Here are some products to keep you glowy and giddy enough for people to ask if you’ve already taken a spring vacation.

When the seasonal exposure to sunlight is minimal, the face can appear sallow and sad. Benefit’s Girl Meets Pearl ($34 at Shopper’s Drug Mart Beauty Boutiques) provides a liquid highlighter to bring light to the areas of the face that need it the most. Dab a little under your brow, or onto the inner corners of your eyes for that “I just slept 15 hours” look.

No matter how many products we pack on our skin, if the initial layer is dull, the rest will appear the same. Origins Modern Friction ($40, available at The Bay) is a gentle, natural dermabrasion that rejuvenates old skin. With rich starch, lemon oil and aloe, skin is left without uneven patches or irritations and people will start asking how much your professional treatments are. It’s up to you to share the secret.

While I provided my 6 insights for 2012, my contributor k* (who hates capitalization and prefers anonymity) wrote this great piece about resolutions. Enjoy! xx
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
the thing about new year's resolutions is that they're often made and rarely kept. i think this is because they're usually a mental note after a few glasses of bubbly and also when it comes down to achieving the goal post-holiday season, the fun's over, it's cold out, and you feel broke and <strike>fat.</strike> an already defeated state of mind is not ideal to embark on a quest to resolve a problem you've identified with yourself. it can seem impossible and overwhelming.

when overwhelmed, the best piece of advice i ever received was from my dad. he said, "how do you eat an elephant? one bite at a time."

when i have what feels like a monumental task in front of me, this analogy always calms me down. so how can it be applied to new year's resolutions? using the following steps, making that resolution a reality should be a bit easier.

1) identify an achievable goal.
it's great to want to save more money, for example, but if you don't plan how much money, it's difficult to measure success. in the case of money, pick a number. if you're in debt $1,000.00, identify that's the amount that needs to be saved.

2) make a list.
figure out the steps needed to achieve the end goal. if you need to save $1,000.00, how many lattes and impulse lipsticks and pairs of shoes does that mean refraining from a week? credit card statements are a great help - figure out what unnecessary items are eating into your balance each week.

3) write it down.
it's great to make a mental note, but daily decisions made can derail your end-goal when it's not top-of-mind. write down your first step. so if you're $1,000.00 in debt, write down "no lattes this week, so drink free coffee at the office and save $50". place the note somewhere you will be reminded, like on the bathroom mirror or on your computer at work. once the first step is complete, replace the note with step 2.

4) have a deadline.
once the steps are figured out, you'll know how long it should take you to achieve your goal. circle this date on the calendar, set an alarm/reminder on your phone, and make yourself aware that there will come a day when all the little steps have completed the whole.

i'm going to make the same resolution i made last year - to blog more. i didn't follow my own advice last year but plan to this year, so more posts i hope in 2012.

Although I've been to New York four times prior, I realized that I've never seen this famous attraction. On my latest trip (lucky #5), I vowed to make it there. Despite a delayed flight, (see post below) I arrived in Brooklyn on Saturday morning and celebrated New Years Eve with a great group of friends. On my final day, and with just a couple of hours before my flight home, my wish was fulfilled.

While some tourist attractions leave me agitated, or underwhelmed (*cough cough Times Square) I really enjoyed this stop. There is something calming about walking on a structure that represents a city's history, its mobility and its connection to itself. On this trip I felt part of something, part of New York.

I know I'm a Canadian city girl at heart, but New York seems to have made its way into that beating organ in my chest. It felt good to scratch something small off my "to-see" list.

This year, make your own list and vow to see something new in 2012.

Below are some photos I took while there. Enjoy!

The moment a new page turns on a calendar wheel, the self-reflection begins. It doesn't matter what your stance on resolutions are, the new year forces everyone to remember where they were 365 days ago. What has changed? What has remained the same? What is better? What is worse? While I've listed my resolutions here in the past, this year I want to provide some insight on 6 things that I feel are important to focus on, no matter what time of year it is.

1. Mind - Your mind can be your best friend or worst enemy. I believe that you can change your entire world (as in, how you perceive it) through your thoughts. If you "feed your brain" with junk - negativity, gossip, fear - you will always have a case of the Charlie Brown cloud. Instead, train your mind to return to the present moment. Take 5 minutes before you go to bed to sit and breathe. Read everything and anything that gives you a new perspective on life.

2. Body - Stay active. If there is one thing to invest in this year, it's your limbs. I was recently telling someone over lunch that I've been neglectful in this department (due to work and a busy schedule) but I vow to get back on track. Find an activity that keeps you motivated and take small steps. Just keep moving. Remember, it's not just about vanity, it's about health.

3. Soul - Indulge in activities that make you deliriously happy. I'm talking about the hobbies that really immerse you in the present moment. You don't just do them passively - you feel them. For me, it's writing. However, when I think back to other activities that "fed my soul," I also remember painting in high school and taking dance classes as a teen (despite my poor coordination). Remember what you loved as a kid and start from there.

4. Heart - Choose to value people above everything. Your friends and family are the most important support system to get you through another year. Don't take them for granted. Also, welcome new people into your life. Open your heart. Surround yourself with those who challenge and stimulate you. The best relationships and friendships are the ones that make you a better person. Don't waste energy on people who drain you.

5. Risk - Do something this year that you've always wanted to do. Try something new. For me, it involves travel, writing and taking more chances. For writing, I want to finish a screenplay that I've been "working" on for 2 years (I currently have a meager 6 pages written and a notebook full of scene scraps). I'd also like to get published in a print publication. Sometimes the risk is simply putting yourself in a situation that may set you up for rejection or ridicule. Do it anyway.

6. Gratitude - No matter where you are at this very moment, be thankful. Be grateful for another year. Believe that there is good in every single day. Write it down. Some days, you may have to look really hard, but you will always find something.

I'm supposed to be on a plane to New York City right now, but my flight was cancelled due to weather. I hope tomorrow goes as planned and I'm celebrating 2012 with my favourite people in Brooklyn.

Until then, Happy 2012!
I've been holed up in the suburbs enjoying the comforts of Christmas, extended cable and cookies. With only 3 days left until 2012, you know I will have a lot to say about the impending new year. Hope everyone had a fantastic holiday (whatever you celebrated).

In the meantime, below is one of my latest posts for The Kit. xx

When I was in grade seven, I wore my hair in a bun everyday for an entire year.

My parents used to plead with me to let it loose. My father claims that he used to tease a girl in grade-school by calling her Rapunzel, because she always wore her hair in a tight ponytail. He believed that karma came in the form of a daughter (me) who would never let loose her long, curly (in their eyes, beautiful) hair.

Obviously, I’ve come a long way from wearing my hair up every day, but I still find it the easiest way to style my unruly coif, especially in the morning. While I’ve become an avid slave to the trendy topknot bun, I’m always looking to refresh my look.

Back in the tenth grade, I became a master of what is now deemed, “the bubble ponytail.” This wacky ponytail can be achieved by tying little clear elastics, (I prefer Goody’s version) in little sections, every ¾-inch of your ponytail.

I recently spotted the stunning Olivia Wilde wearing my infamous ponytail (yes, I dubbed it mine because I’ve never seen anyone else do it). I decided that if it’s good enough for the red carpet, it’s good enough for my cubicle.

I've been following her blog since we both were in PR school, and I love how it's evolved to incorporate food. When she applied to be part of my writing squad I was more than happy to bring her on-board.

Below is her take on red velvet whoopie pies. I give them the Not A Model seal of amazingness.

Enjoy! xx

We all know that red velvet is currently the dessert flavour of the moment and if you haven't tried it at least once, well... what are you waiting for? The holiday season is one of the few times a year you can feel guiltless about baking and eating hoardes of cookies, so naturally I had to make at least one batch before the year was out. I found this recipe for red velvet sandwich cookies and I was hook, line and sinker. The cookies are basically mini cakes (if you can handle that). Also, CREAM CHEESE ICING. Enough said. It's a bit of a time consuming project but it was definitely an experiment worth trying. I ended up doubling the cookie recipe and cutting the icing recipe in half, and the quantities were perfect. Consensus: one flavourful, delicious cookie. I'll be riding this sugar high all the way to New Years...

With biting winter winds, bottomless glasses of merlot and warm embraces under the mistletoe, the lips have it rougher during the holidays. Just in time for a lip resolution, protect that pucker from more than Aunt Mildred’s prickly upper lip.

The Scrub-In: When you want to give your lips that extra bit of love around Old Man Winter, try Lush’s Lip scrub in Pow Wow. We walked around, drank mulled wine and relished in the lights.

You see, I'm a sucker when it comes to those tiny bulbs on strings. Everything just looks more hopeful when lit up. It's natural to gravitate towards something brighter than yourself, but the real question lies in believing you too can be that bright. Will you swell or will you shrink in the presence?

This week's Not A Model mantra is a bit of a question to ponder: "Who is more foolish, the child afraid of the dark or the man afraid of the light?" - Maurice Freehill
Nadia Geneviève Masri – a storyteller, endless dreamer and the Editor-in-Chief of the soon-to-be-launched Birdcage Magazine. Not only can she recite full acts of Shakespeare from memory and change into a full-on Joe Fresh ensemble whilst driving to an interview, Nadia is a woman of many, many talents and is wise far beyond her years. With an uncanny ability to see beauty that is not often discernible to the untrained eye, she also has a knack for uncovering hidden talent and inspiration in the most obscure places and coaxing it out. I had the pleasure of sitting down with the “predator for creativity” to pick her brain about inspirational roots, magazine content and what she loves most about the whimsical side of the fashion industry. With two steaming cups of peppermint tea in hand, we delved into conversation.

Bronte Martin: When did this love affair for the fashion industry begin?

Nadia Geneviève Masri: I was a tomboy all of my life; I played every sport, loved adventure, and frequently donned boyish clothes and backwards hats. Then came high school. After my freshman year, I made a sound decision to kindle more of a girlish charm, and it was time for me to move onto the next stage of my youth. My attitude towards fashion at the time was more a more generic attempt to follow trends, that was what fashion meant to me. Two weeks before the first day of junior year, I went out at bought myself the September issue of American Vogue. Inside, I found what I can only describe as a coming-of-age moment for me. There was Gisele Bundchen, tall as a forest pine and beautiful as ever, in an editorial titled "The M.V.P." photographed by Steven Meisel. I was on two soccer teams at the time, clearly an avid enthusiast of the sport. It was the first time I was able to see fashion on creative and imaginative level. I was immersed in the photos of this striking young woman dressed head to toe in incredible attire – save for a pair of cleats – while darting around a football field with a team of male athletes. It became clear to me that fashion was a way of expression open to interpretation, not an archetypal attitude. I was being told a story: a notion I had never associated with the world of clothing. I saw myself in that spread and I was intoxicated. When I continued to leaf through the issue, I did so with a newfound perspective. It was the work of Grace Coddington that stood out most to me; her proclivity towards embodying the fantasy of fashion really spoke to my tastes, and I can honestly say she might very well be the reason I chose to pursue this path. Grace Coddington is the reason why I am in fashion. I even walked right up to her and told her so one fashion week. Grace always tells a story, and that is what I aim to do with every dimension of my work.

BM: Give us some insight as to what Birdcage Magazine stands for.

NGM: There is no distinct way to describe what we stand for, but rather the feeling we hope to precipitate. The magazine represents freedom of expression, artistic integrity, and a fervent regard for storytelling. There are no product layouts telling you what to wear because to me, that does not represent what I love about fashion. It isn't my intention to try and tell readers what they should or should not be wearing. I feel as though that is a choice one should make on their own terms, to challenge the conventional and express one's own authenticity. Of course, that is not to say I don't like changing up my wardrobe every season. I whole-heartedly enjoy the progression of ever-changing attire, but I prefer to interpret the trends and choose my clothing based on what inspires me. The best way to get inspiration is to see things in action. I respond best to ideas I see through an engaging medium, such as an editorial, as a pose to expressionless exhibits. What I mean to say is, I believe readers would be more inclined to pursue a certain style or garment if they are able to connect with the fashion on a personal level, as opposed to just seeing it on the page. I find many publications are quite focused on the consumer’s buying prospects, while I have chosen to cater to how the fashion can best be expressed. That is why we include personal accounts and interactions from the fashion industry and the personalities within. So I guess if I had to give a straight answer to your question, I would say that we don't focus on what so much as on who. Without all those talented individuals, there would be no industry to speak of. It's about high time to personify the fashion industry and allow an intimate acquaintance for our readers.

BM: Who currently inspires you the most?

NGM: Goodness, this one I could go on about for hours. Everything and everyone inspires me. Every touch, scent, scene and smile inspires me to do what I do. At this present moment, however, I must say an intelligent gentleman by the name of Simon Sinek. He is without a doubt one of the most amazing individuals I have ever met. Two weeks back, I heard him speak at a conference in New York City and I began to cry; simply because I had never heard anyone articulate a situation that spoke to me to such a powerful and selfsame degree. He started his work young as well, which I can relate to, and seems to understand the plight of the creative thinker. It was like hearing my soul speak for the first time in so long: I had been suppressing my naive passions in an effort to be who I thought I needed to be in order to achieve success. I put a lot of pressure on myself to be a steadfast businesswoman and in turn was becoming less and less of who I was. The twinkle was beginning to fade, but hearing Simon's philosophies and insight set my true purpose ablaze. His book, Start With Why, is one that should not go unnoticed by anyone regardless of their industry. On the contrary, his work is applicable to every living being. It would be dishonest to say he has changed me for the better, but rather, restored me to my former and true self. The more I learn about him and his work, the better person I become, and the happier I am with that person. There is an interview with Simon in the first issue of Birdcage which I am tremendously excited to share, but it would be unseemly of me not to invite everyone to explore him for themselves.

BM: What is it about New York that you love so dearly?

NGM: There are no words to articulate quite how fond I am of that city. It is like my life is a giant jigsaw puzzle; New York is just one of the essential pieces. I initially went to New York to find success and opportunity, and was mildly surprised to find that New Yorkers are some of the most open and accepting people I have come across. Perhaps I may just be lucky in who I have been drawn to and vice versa, but a magnetic energy enraptured me. It lives and breathes fashion. There's a certain magic to finding where you belong, whether it be North Dakota, Montreal, or New York. I believe in this city. And as Pablo Picasso said, "Magic has to be believed, that's the only way it's real." Traveling back and forth from Toronto to New York for four years now, I can honestly say that every time I set foot in Manhattan, it feels like my first. It never gets old. You can’t help but fall in love with the busy streets and sea of faces in perpetual motion. New York is like a diamond, it is multi-faceted and there are so many different sides open to exploration.

BM: Who is your ideal reader?

NGM: Well for starters, if any part of you connects with what I have been saying on any level, you would like it. Birdcage is for the inspired. The hopeless romantics and the endless dreamers. We are on an eternal excursion, wandering through the creative world. If that sounds like you, I would love to have you read the magazine. We represent the personalities within the fashion industry. We tell stories. We invite models and artists to explore their passions. We invite readers to do the same, and be inspired by what they see. Basically, we cater to individuals who love storytelling, but also have an affinity for fashion. Sometimes I feel like Alice in Wardrobe Wonderland. We explore nostalgic bliss and that child-like innocence that is often long forgotten and left untouched. We also believe it is important to have content that is both visually striking and journalistically sound. The aesthetic is scrapbook-like, so the chaotic bliss of how it all comes together is truly remarkable. I am beyond excited that I have been blessed to even take part in the process. Birdcage is really about remarkable individuals in fashion who have a story to tell, whatever their means of expressing that story.

BM: What has been the hardest obstacle to date?

NGM: I feel as though every day has incurred a new lesson, be it bad or good. In terms of major struggles, what I touched upon earlier regarding losing touch with myself has been the foremost obstacle. When I first began, I was very naïve – an attribute I have grown to treat as a gift – and was lost in my own little world of bringing my dream to life. Then came the business side. I am not without entrepreneurial skill, and picked up a great deal of practical knowledge in business school, but the migration from Toronto to New York proved to be more of a challenge than I had envisioned. There were sides I had not considered so early, especially with minimal funding; dealing with lawyers, accountants and company executives, there was more to it than just rounding up some model friends for a shoot. Poring over the tedious and trying aspects of starting a business began to take its toll, and I didn't have as much help as I knew I needed. I was operating every aspect of the business. I slept a few hours a night, and spent every waking moment planning, coordinating, billing, and executing in order to compensate for what I could not get help with. The fact that I can be an overachieving perfectionist was not helpful either. It is very difficult to be so incredibly passionate about something, and that same thing causing you so much stress and anxiety. I was putting far more pressure on myself that was asked of me because the magazine was – well, still is – literally my baby. It represents who I am and what I believe in. What happens to it, affects a large part of me on an emotional level. In September, we were almost ready to go to print when we suffered serious technical difficulties and lost all of our data. I was devastated. It felt like I had lost a piece of my soul and had a minor meltdown. It would probably be relevant to mention that timing has a funny way of presenting opportunity, for it was shortly after that I was at that conference and saw Simon Sinek speak. Since then, I have spent a lot more time focusing on the aspects of my work that are consistent with who I am and what I hope to achieve. I really took a step back to look at the work that I had done, and realized that as long as my head and my heart were going in the right direction, my feet would find their steps.

BM: How have you overcome the fact that you are such a young entrepreneur?

NGM: As a young person, you are always trying to prove yourself no matter what industry you are in. If you base your work off of what somebody else might want to see, then that’s no way to live. It is like how teenaged girls plagued with insecurity show up at school every morning dressed in an attempt to impress everyone else, but at what cost if they cannot seem to be impressed with themselves? It really wasn’t until last month when I found myself being the youngest person in the room at that conference in New York City that I realized this. I was surrounded by these amazing leaders and entrepreneurs from across the globe, and that was my “aha” moment. I was praised for my maturity, and my determination to persevere when most would have given up on their passions. I realized that by being a leader of my own magazine and to myself, this was allowing others to flourish by showcasing their talents as well. Sometimes it's hard to be young and passionate, because we may not always have the answers we need. An autodidact, there is still a great deal I do not know about my industry. I am in an everlasting journey of learning. It's a process, that's the beauty of it all. I don't believe one can ever be an expert so to speak, because that would have to mean there was nothing more for them to learn. How tragic that would be. Regardless, I think that being a young entrepreneur does not mean being identical to the businesspeople we see leading their industries, which I have learned in the most experiential way possible. Bringing back the Vogue references, I've been told I am a perfect mix between Grace Coddington and Anna Wintour, because I can see the business side of things, but I’m still a creative mess.

We've lived together now for over 6 months and had yet to throw a combined large bash. Sprinkled within a calendar of other holiday soirees and understanding that our small space could only hold so many bodies, we crossed our toes and hoped for the best. While preparation for the party left us both a bit frazzled, (Do we have enough food? I hope we can fit everyone?! There is no way we can fit everyone. What should we put on this playlist?) I can speak for the both of us when I say that our party was probably THE most fun we've ever had at our apartment. It was such a good time that I barely picked up my camera, never checked the clock and lost my voice the next day.

As a hostess, I expected to receive the usual inquiries about the food, the drinks, the space etc. What I wasn't expecting was for the most popular question to be, "Uhh Amanda, are you wearing leather shorts?"

The answer was, yes, but of course! (And they're pleather.) From one sparkly collar to another - happy holidays!
By - Cat Veitch

I love a good pair of red lips.

As a makeup artist, perfecting the red lip is a task more daunting than one would think. It was something I struggled with in the early stages of makeup school, but something I set out to conquer by the end of the year.

In my personal life, I’m that girl constantly trying to bring lipstick “back”. Lipstick’s cool, right? Don’t get me wrong, I love a good gloss, but nothing completes a look for me like fire engine red lips.

It doesn’t end there, though. Give me burgundy, coral, cherry red, I love them all…and I will try to rock them at one event or another. The only problem is I’m the worst lipstick wearer known to man (or woman). I can’t even count the number of photos I own of me at a club, so thrilled, yet so unaware of my lipstick-laden teeth.

With winter 2012 around the corner, I couldn’t help but notice one of the winter makeup trends: vampy lips. Designers hit the runways with a wide spectrum of shades, from orange reds to purple reds, complimenting the usual flawless model complexion.

In celebration, I’d like to introduce you to my favourite lipstick colour, not just for this winter, for always: Rimmel London Moisture Renew in Burgundy Delight. It’s a gorgeous dark blood red colour, and definitely not for the feint of heart, but if you’ve got the confidence you can rock it. It’s a shade more suited to fall/winter, but if you love it like me, you’ll wear it winter, summer, day, night, on your teeth or off (hopefully off). I always get a comment or two when I wear it, and it’s a hit with my makeup clients, too.

You don’t have to jump on the burgundy bandwagon, but this season I challenge you to push your boundaries and rock some red. Whether you’re going to a party or window-shopping around town, have some fun with your look. Throw on a cozy scarf, slick some colour on those lips, and ring in this season with a little flirty fun.

I've always been one to favour elderly advice.

If I could pick one person to sit down and have lunch with me, it would be my late grandfather, Joe. There was something about his patience and wisdom that always brought the greatest clarity to me.

This week's Not A Model mantra comes from seventy-nine year old designer Oscar de la Renta as he discusses his new fragrance "Live in Love." I personally admire his choice to use an illustration for the fragrance's image, rather than a supermodel. (See photo above).

He explains, "When I create and sell a fragrance, I'm not trying to say that [the women who buy it] should look like Jennifer Lopez. I think that a woman should have an identity of her own!" cred: [National Post]

While reading a recent article about the fragrance, he also seemed to provide insight on life in a way that only someone who has lived it, can.

“There’s a day when you are born into this world, and there’s a day when you will die. So you must realize that everything in between should be celebrated—you must 'Live in Love,' whether that love is in your work, or your children, or your gardens—whatever that may be, [...] In general, I hate celebrations, because every day is really a celebration, no?”- Oscar de la Renta [credit: Vanity Fair]

This week, take a note from de la Renta. With the most
joyous holiday of the year coming up, let's not wait until then to
appreciate the days.

If you're spending the Holidays in the snow, here's my top three picks to make sure you're bundled up against Mother Nature:

We’re crushing hard on the Joan of Arctic Sorel boots, which by the way might just be the best thing since sliced bread. They combine Sorel’s celebrated cold-weather performance with a stylish design and keep our toes from getting frostbitten, even after hours of building snowmen.

Even though we’d rather be lounging poolside, we have a soft spot for coats (it must be our Canadian roots and love of hockey), so while we’re out shopping around town we’ll be sporting this adorable hooded, toggle plaid coat from Old Navy. The grey and cream is so chic and the yellow stripe adds a pop of sunshine colour.

Our favourite new accessory is Gap’s cable-knit hat with faux fur pompom. Not only is it super warm and stylish, but it keeps our tresses looking super chic without leaving us with hat head.

Hello Not a Model readers!

I'm thrilled to be a fashion and food contributor to my lovely friend Amanda's blog. We'll get to the fashion a little later on, but for now let's talk about food. As a frequent food blogger, I thought it would be appropriate to share some of the recipes I make at home on Not a Model, in a Recipe of the Month column. I want the recipes to be classic (perhaps sometimes with a twist) but also seasonally appropriate. What better way to kick things off than with a very traditional and delicious, French Onion soup.

As I've shared on my blog many times before, soup is one of my all-time favourite foods; you really can't go wrong with a delicious homemade soup. I had never actually made French Onion soup before but this one had a lot of good ratings so I thought it was safe to try. Minus the long caramelizing and boiling down process with the onions, this recipe is fairly straight forward and doesn't call for a lot of ingredients, which is always a nice thing. I didn't bake my bowl of soup in the oven with the bread and cheese like they do in restaurants, mostly because I didn't think I had the appropriate dishware to do so, but broiling the cheesy toast and adding them on top afterward was an equally appealing (and necessary) option. If you're a fan of French Onion soup, I would definitely give this a try. It's the perfect meal after a busy day at work/school, and warms your belly up in an oh-so-delicious way.

(I'm the type of girl who will send out 100 party invitations and be genuinely surprised when 99 people attend). It's been a longer process than imagined, but I officially have a new Not A Model team of amazing girls.

It's great to have new talent on-board that are passionate about writing, blogging and communication. The squad is diverse, with all of them bringing different angles and perspectives to interesting topics. From a talented make-up artist, to a New Brunswick native who comes from a military family - I hope you will enjoy engaging with these new voices.

Here at Not A Model, I strive to create a message - (both online and in my everyday life) that focuses on contributing to the world in a positive way, no matter how small. It takes nothing to brighten someone's day while sharing your passion, whether it be for fashion, beauty, health or life. I'm so excited to start this new angle to the blog.

Without further delay, click below and...

Here we have another one of my beauty posts for The Kit. This time, it's a sultry little move for your hair, and my disdain for fragrance. Enjoy. xx

I’m going to share a small secret: I love to wear perfume in my hair.

Now I’m not sure how many women spritz fragrance in their mane, but it is my favourite trick. It’s a subtle little move that keeps your hair smelling irresistible to all those lucky people who happen to be around you that day.

Now here is the issue: I STRONGLY dislike perfume, especially perfume done wrong.

I hate walking into an elevator in the morning and having to wear a gas mask (oh wait, I don’t own one of those). Let’s try that again: I repeat, I hate walking into an elevator in the morning and not being able to breathe because someone decided to douse their entire body in perfume. (This goes for men too.) The key word is subtle. One spray, mayyybe two.

I even hate the perfume section of the department store and will cower from the trigger-happy spritzers who want to share their samples with me. Runnnnnnnnnnn!

Just when I was ready to go as “scent-free” as a kindergarten teacher, I discovered Lanvanila. Lavanila (available at Sephora) is a light, almost natural perfume made with pure essential oils, vitamins, minerals and amino acids.

Say what? I know. The fragrance is also made without parabens, sulfates and even synthetic dyes. My personal favourite for my body and hair is Lavanila Pure Vanilla. With notes of freesia and patchouli, it won’t leave you smelling like a cupcake.

The advice came from a smart, challenging and diverse businesswoman, a CEO nonetheless. Now you could probably expect a leader to tell young people to "feed their brains" with more business - more news about business, more books about business, but this advice was the opposite.

It goes like this: if your job/education deals with fashion, communications or medicine, you should feed your brain with information outside of those realms. Basically, if you're learning about rackets in your day job, don't spend your free time only thinking about rackets. You must read, absorb, listen, and learn about things that are different from you and your current knowledge. Watch foreign films, listen to podcasts about topics that confuse you, or intimidate you. Go outside of your information comfort zone. It's the only way that you will be able to contribute to your industry (and the world) in a meaningful way. Actively work harder at your curiosity.

You see, if you're learning about rackets all week, spend the weekend with the guy who makes the balls.
