Today we are sharing our plan to automatically upgrade Windows customers to the latest version of Internet Explorer available for their PC. This is an important step in helping to move the Web forward. We will start in January for customers in Australia and Brazil who have turned on automatic updating via Windows Update.

Seems like excellent news for developers who are pushing modern web standards and interoperability, but don’t get too excited. It remains to be seen how many larger organisations (schools, banks, newspapers, local councils, governments, you know… our clients) with Network Nazis on the payroll will actually allow the new automatic updating feature to be turned on via Windows Update (my guess: virtually none).

Under the guise of “respecting customer choice and control,” Microsoft continues to provide Automatic Update Blocker toolkits that “…prevent automatic upgrades of IE for Windows customers who do not want them.”

Oh, and there’s this (emphasis is mine):

Similarly, customers who have declined previous installations of IE8 or IE9 through Windows Update will not be automatically updated. Customers have the ability to uninstall updates and continue to receive support for the version of IE that came with their copy of Windows.

Everybody agrees that the web is better, faster and safer when you’re running an up-to-date browser, but once again Microsoft has gone out of its way to ensure that system administrators who don’t give a shit, don’t have to.
