I have 2 similar scenarios , only difference being the platforms and the user base.

Scenario 1:

We have a domino server running on as 400 with 30 users. Now 5 of them want to use Lotus Traveler.

Scenario 2:

I have a client that is running domino on the iSeries and has over 6000 users but 35 of those 6000 users want to use Traveler as they have windows mobile phones.

In both these scenarios, I would need to setup a domino server to just run Lotus Traveler . This is being done since traveler only runs on Wintel and will NOT run on either AS400 or the i Series.

Question:
Do I need a new domino server license for this domino server that just hosts the Lotus Traveler functionality?

If I do then this is going to be one really expensive solution.

Here is a very baffling situation for which I am not getting a straight solution.

Scenario:

The environment is one huge Lotus Domino domino containing Lotus Domino 6.5.x, 7.x and 8.5 servers. We currently have 4 bes servers running version 4.1.x and working great. Now we need to set up a new bes server for another division whose users will be housed on these 8.5 domino server. We have the license to install BES 5.0. and want to install BES 5 but using a different SQL database from the other servers.

Problem/Question:

I was informed that if I install BES 5.0 in this environment described above, then I would not be able to access any of the bes 4.1.x servers from the bes 5.0 administration client. Is this true?
The other issue that was mentioned was that if I used the blackberry admin client 5.0 to access my bes 4.1.x servers it will automatically initiate a upgrade of the besmgmt database that the 4.1.x servers use. Now I do not even see how this can happen as the client does not have the capacity to make db design upgrades, it only reads/modifies the tables/data. any advice?
Any other gotchas/advice/experience that anyone has to share with me. (I did read this post on TurtleWeb )

Dropped Calls on Blackberry Bold, iPhone & Motorola Q on AT&T

Here is a problem I have heard from 3 clients of mine. One of them uses the new iPhone , the other uses a Motorola Q and the last uses a Blackberry Bold. All these phone are 3G phones.

Their voice calls drop anywhere between 12-25 minutes into the call. Initially we thought it was a problem with the phones, then we suspected the firmware (at least in the case of the Blackberry Bold and the Motorola Q as we have means to upgrade them) and then we suspected the SIM card. None of these made sense as we were able to reproduce the problem consistently.

I took the Motorola Q which uses a AT&T sim card and disabled the 3G on it and moved it to just GSM/EDGE (GSM for Voice and EDGE for Data). We did a 1 hour telephone call and during that call sent the user multiple emails and the call never dropped. Remember we used to drop calls every 12-25 minutes while 3G was turned on.

Then the user comes back to me with an even more shocking/revealing observation. He goes "my web browsing on my Q is so much faster now that when it was before we made this change" This means the web browsing using Edge is a lot faster than on 3G. Does not make sense but it is what it is.

Then I called up my iphone user who was also complaining about the dropped calls. He has since turned off her 3G and says his calls are no longer dropping.

So that brought me to the last suspect, the Blackberry Bold. Now based on my previous tests and results, I decided to try and turn off 3G on the Bold.

I got 2 Blackberry Bolds. One on AT&T and the other on TMobile (which was an unlocked phone). The Bold on AT&T consistently dropped the voice calls and the one that was unlocked but using the TMobile SIM/Network did not drop calls at all.

Now on the AT&T phone I tried to turn off 3G but found the option was no found (it was hidden/blocked out...whatever you want to call it!).

So I put that AT&T SIM card into the unlocked bold, turned off 3G and continued the test and calls have not dropped so far. Now you got to remember this was the same unlocked Bold that was running 3G on a TMobile network with no dropped calls.

So that gave me 1 conclusion and the obvious solution. Any phone with 3G turned on the AT&T network tends to drop voice calls regularly.
The obvious solution was to turn off 3G and things settle down. Now the added advantage we are seeing is that the browsing is quicker on AT&T EDGE network rather than the AT&T 3G network.
So that brought up yet another question , is the AT&T network not truly compatible or what is wrong with it? That is something I will not be able to answer.

I will do a post with detailed instructions how to turn of 3G on all phones discussed above in the next few days with screen captures.

Am running the Lotus Domino 8.5 server. I have enabled id vault and its working fine in all aspects except when it comes to deleting a user.

When we delete a user from the NAB , it gives us the usual pop-up asking where all/what all we want to delete. So lets say we select delete ID from the id vault.

When you click OK in the box above, here is the error msg I get . if the picture is not clear the error message reads "delete from ID vault cannot be done for user CN=Bill Clinton/O=TSI. Once the patch is applied here is what the revision number looks like

So in short the patch works on both Lotus Notes client 8.0.2 and 8.5. Now to test the server patch for 8.0.2

Thank you IBM!!

It does change the release number of the client to Release 8.5 HHF27
Revision 20081211.1925-HHF27 (Release 8.5 HF33) . This means even more good news for administrators in that we can deploy this hotfix via the Lotus Domino Smartupgrade.

Am still to test on Lotus Notes 8.0.2 client and Lotus Domino 8.0.2 server and will update you all again on those results.

Till then....

As for the fix for client side archiving on 8.5 the request for the fix is pending. ( am sure they will make it happen)

Thank you Chad (you know who you are!!) for the awesome support. It is this kind of support that sets IBM and Lotus a class apart from the competition. Kudos to you!!

Orphaned by their mother’s death in childbirth and their father’s disappearance, bound together by a preternatural connection and a shared fascination with medicine, the twins come of age as Ethiopia hovers on the brink of revolution. Yet it will be love, not politics—their passion for the same woman—that will tear them apart and force Marion, fresh out of medical school, to flee his homeland. He makes his way to America, finding refuge in his work as an intern at an under funded, overcrowded New York City hospital. When the past catches up to him nearly destroying him Marion must entrust his life to the two men he thought he trusted least in the world: the surgeon father who abandoned him and the brother who betrayed him.

An unforgettable journey into one man’s remarkable life, and an epic story about the power, intimacy, and curious beauty of the work of healing others.

This book goes on sale today (2/3/2009). If we are to go by any of his previous works (all of which I have faithfully read!), I would say this is a sure best seller and a must read!!!. Cannot wait to get my hands on it.

As for more on this book , his previous books and his book signing tour dates click here

Also below is a trailer I found on the novel.
DO NOT REMOVE EMPTY FOLDERS FROM YOU MAILBOX ONCE YOU HAVE ARCHIVED THE CONTENTS OF IT!!!

This applies to Lotus Domino 8.0.2 and 8.5

Archived folders and all contents are removed from the Archive database when deleted from the mail file

Folders that contain documents in the archive database are removed when the empty folder is deleted from the mail file. The documents will be present in the All Documents view in the archive database. In other words folders that contain documents in the archive database are removed when the folder is deleted from the mail file.

Steps to reproduce
1. Create a folder in the inbox and copy/move some documents into it

2. Navigate to the folder, select all the documents and "Archive Selected Documents"

3. Verify that the archived folder has been created in the archive

4. Delete the Folder from the Inbox

5. From the inbox perform another Archive command like "Archive Now"

6. Navigate to the Archive and notice that the archive folder has been deleted.

In a mailfile with many folders, use archiving to archive all contents of several different folders may be needed when projects or discussions end.
Once those documents are archived, in mailfile you would not require the empty folders and would delete these (now empty) folders.

The next archive function will delete the folders from the archive db as well.

The documents will be fine, but it will not be so easy to find them as they are only listed in the All Documents view and there is not way to put them back in the folders other than redoing the entire process of creating the folders in the archive and moving the documents from the All Documents view back into the respective folders provided you have the time and patience to do it all over again.

Other observations:

This does not happen in Lotus Domino versions 7.0.3, 8.0 and 8.0.1

IBM ESR solution 1 - If you have upgraded to Lotus Domino version 8.0.2 or Lotus Domino 8.5 . roll back (yes roll back) to version 8.0.1

IBM ESR solution 2 - Do NOT use archiving.

As for a request for a hot fix for this solution to IBM, it was turned down as "its not important enough for the software team to release a hot fix"... Wow..users are suffering but that is the answer I got ..

Now to add to it, what do we tell all the users that have already archived thousands of emails and have deleted the folders and have lost them in the archive, will let you know that one when I find the explanation that works best.

BES on MS Exchange calendar problem

I have just finished a BES 4.1.6 for a MS Exchange 2003 server. The installation went smooth and email flows just fine.

Now here comes the problem. It is with calendar entries and more specifically meeting invitations.

Regular reminders created ether on the desktop or on the handheld get synchronized correctly both ways.

Now coming to meeting invites. When the user gets a meeting invite, it appears in the users inbox of MS Outlook client and he can accept or reject it as normal but on the blackberry it does not show up in the inbox at all. It shows up as a appointment directly in the users calendar.

Now if you accept the meeting invite from the desktop it goes into the desktop calendar as a meeting but shows up on the Blackberry calendar as a reminder (not a meeting).

I have checked the logs and also gone a step further and used the MS tool that takes you down to each folder , each document and each field in the documents (something like the easy right click doc properties option in Lotus Domino, only that here you need a tool to do it) and found that for the mail document in the inbox which was pushed to the Blackberry handheld you can see the parameters that are modified by the BES . But if you look at the calendar invite it does not show these fields. This goes to show that for some reason the BES is not seeing the calendar invite at all and so is not processing the document at all.

RIM is working on this case too. Before you ask yes I have done all the cdo.dll and mapi32.dll tricks out there and none of it works. I have also checked all access rights on the mailbox and still no luck.

I did have a conference all with another fellow Lotus Domino blogger Vaughan Rivett who did a very interesting post comparing logging on MS Exchange and Lotus Domino which can be read here

Will blog/post further detail as and when I get further on this case.

What is Lotus Notes Traveler - Recap

IBM Lotus Notes Traveler provides two-way, over-the-air synchronization between Domino servers and select handheld devices. Lotus Notes Traveler synchronizes e-mail, calendar, to-do, address book, and journal data in real time. New e-mail arriving in your inbox on the Domino server arrives on the device without you needing to do anything and triggers a notification event, such as a tone or a device vibration. Updates made on the device such as sending a new e-mail or changing a calendar entry are synchronized with the server as soon as a network connection is available.
The Lotus Notes Traveler client provides a simple, easy-to-use interface with a minimal number of configuration settings. You can customize how much data is synchronized with the device to optimize the use of device memory.
The Lotus Notes Traveler server runs as a Domino server task and is installed on a server running Lotus Domino 8.5. For basic configurations, the Lotus Notes Traveler component runs on a Domino server immediately following installation with minimal input required from an administrator. All day-to-day administrator activities are performed using the Domino Administrator client and the Domino remote administration console. The Lotus Notes Traveler server task uses the Domino directory to automatically look up and find Notes users, so there is no manual enrollment procedure.
If you are a Notes user, then you are already enabled as a Lotus Notes Traveler user. Mobile handheld device users only need to install the client software and point the device to a Lotus Notes Traveler server. Device will automatically register with the server and synchronization begins immediately for the user’s device.
The primary method for Lotus Notes Traveler clients communicating with the Domino server is through an over-the-air communication channel such as cellular General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) or WiFi (802.11x). The Lotus Notes Traveler client works with any secure virtual private network (VPN) installed on the device, but provides integrated support with Lotus Mobile Connect 6.1.2 (LMC). By using Lotus Mobile Connect, you take advantage of the roaming and secure communication features that logically extend the enterprise network to the mobile device, regardless of the physical network that the device is using. The Lotus Notes Traveler client can connect using public GPRS or GSM networks and still maintain the security and presence of being on a company intranet. Data transmitted between the device and server is compressed to reduce the data traffic to a minimum, which is particularly important over slow traffic links.

Now that we got that out of the way.

What is new in IBM Lotus Traveler 8.5:

Lotus Notes Traveler provides the following functions for Nokia S60 devices:

Automatic, two-way, over-the-air synchronization for e-mail, calendar, tasks, and contacts

One-way synchronization from server to device for Notebook entries

Read / Unread mark updates

Full Email retrieval for truncated mail messages

Attachment synchronization

Data filtering options for email, calendar, and tasks

Automated and manual problem reporting

Email folder management

Calendar invitation processing

Integration with Lotus Mobile Connect

Mobile device security policies
An administrator can now define mobile device security policies, along with other Lotus Notes Traveler application settings. The Lotus Notes Traveler client will monitor the device security settings, and if they are not compliant with the policy, an administrator defined action is taken.
Using policies, the Lotus Traveler administrator can force the user to change the device security settings, disable synchronization if the policy is not followed, or simply report the violations to the mobile device user and the Lotus Notes Traveler server. The new security policy settings include:

Require a device password.

Require that a device password be at least a particular strength.

Require that the inactivity time used to automatically lock a device not exceed a defined maximum value.

Enforce that a device is set to automatically hard reset or wipe itself wiped after a defined number of failed device unlock password attempts.

Require that data on removable storage cards be encrypted.client will monitor the device security settings, and if they are not compliant with the policy, an administrator defined action is taken.

Remote wipe
If a mobile device is lost or stolen, an administrator can issue a remote wipe command to remove all sensitive data from the device. You have the option to remove the Lotus Notes Traveler application and data or restore the device to the factory default.
Use the following steps to remotely wipe a device:
1. From the Domino Administrator, select the Messaging tab, and then select the Mail tab.
2. Expand the IBM Lotus Notes Traveler twisty.
3. Open the Device Security view.
4. Select device.
5. Select the Wipe Device action.
6. Choose one or more options from the following:

Option
Description

Hard Reset Device
This option will restore the device back to factory default settings.

Lotus Traveler Application and Data
This option will remove the Lotus Traveler application and all PIM and Email data that was synchronized with Lotus Traveler.

Storage Card
This option will remove any data that is present on storage cards loaded in the device.

Improved web server configuration support
The Lotus Notes Traveler server no longer requires the use of Internet Site documents for the Domino HTTP server configuration. This eliminates a number of integration problems with other web applications that reside on the same Domino web server and that could not support Internet Site documents. Lotus Notes Traveler server will continue to support Internet Site Documents if they are already in use on the Domino Server.
The Lotus Notes Traveler server auto configuration has been enhanced to detect and use the current HTTP Configuration, whether it be Internet Sites or Web Configurations via the Server Document. In addition, changing from Web Configurations to Internet Sites or visa versa after installing Lotus Notes Traveler will not effect the function of the Lotus Notes Traveler server. This will provide seamless Interoperability with other IBM products such as IBM Lotus Sametime, Lotus Quickr, and iNotes. This will also provide seamless Interoperability with Domino services including POP3, SMTP, and others. See the topics under Configuring the server for more details.

Rich Text mail support
Rich text email can now be displayed on Window Mobile 6 devices, including support for fonts, tables and text color.
Lotus Notes Traveler client will render rich text items for those messages synchronized from the server to the device. Exception would be e-mails synchronized to the drafts folder. The drafts folder will be synchronized to the device as plain text.
Here is an example of an e-mail with rich text:

Note: Forwarding, replying, editing, or creating an e-mail with the device will render the content as plain text. <----- This can improve

Server security access
It is now possible to explicitly limit who can and cannot access the Lotus Notes Traveler service on the Domino server. An administrator can define which users or groups of users that are allowed to use the service and which ones cannot.

Device management
A new Domino application database, LotusTraveler.nsf, shows information about the users and their devices that are using the Lotus Traveler service within the Domino Administration client for the current Domino server.
There are three views an Administrators can access which provide useful information such as, which user's have registered with the Lotus Notes Traveler server, device security policy compliance status, remote wipe status, connection status, and build level.
Use the following steps to access user and device information:
1.From the Domino Administrator open a Domino server running the Lotus Traveler service.
2.Select the Messaging tab, and then select the Mail tab.
3.Expand the Lotus Notes Traveler twisty.
4.Choose from the following views:

Device Security

Devices

Users

Each view provides specific information about users and devices. Lotus Notes Traveler implements an encryption and decryption strategy which requires server side access to the user's Notes ID file. The ID file contains the private and public keys necessary to digitally sign, encrypt, and decrypt e-mail messages.
For digital signing, encrypting, or decrypting to work the Notes ID file must be uploaded to the mail file. See the following topic for the instruction on how to upload your Notes ID file.
Note: Only Domino encrypted e-mail is supported on the Lotus Notes Traveler client. Encrypted calendar, todo, and notebook entries are not supported. SMIME encryption is not available.

Note: It is recommended to use either a secure socket layer connection or a virtual private network solution when encryption is enabled on the Lotus Notes Traveler server.

Uploading Notes ID file
For digital signing, encrypting, or decrypting to work the Notes ID file must be uploaded to the mail file.

Reading encrypted e-mail
Notes ID password is required to read encrypted e-mail.

Encrypting e-mail
Prior to sending e-mail message, you can encrypt your outgoing message.

Signing e-mail
Prior to sending e-mail message, you can apply your digital signature to the e-mail.

Research In Motion (RIM) has just released beta 2 of their Blackberry Enterprise Server v 5.0 (code named Argon) today.

Some of the salient features are:

BlackBerry Monitoring System improvements, based on using a BES Monitoring Agent running on the device to provide real-time data, and alarms, on a range of critical trends, such as the sudden queuing of e-mails.

Improved device activation diagnostics, allowing administrators to search and review activation status.

Automated and manual failover of the BES

Monitor up to 57 weeks of data.

Monitor a data-attribute of a BlackBerryEnterprise Server component or BlackBerry device user by rate.

Monitor the connection status of BlackBerry Enterprise Server components.

Generate appropriate thresholds that you can use to monitor BlackBerry Enterprise Server components and BlackBerry device users automatically.

View diagnostic information for BlackBerry devices in the BlackBerry Monitoring Service console.

Unified Application Management, giving administrators much more control over deploying, securing, and managing applications, from RIM or from third-party or enterprise developers. In this new model, applications and information about them are "published" to a BlackBerry repository, which is then used to bundle applications together for user groups to schedule and control their distribution to devices

Well I will be installing and playing with the BES 5.0 over the next week or so and should/maybe able to blog a few more posts depending on how confidential they are.

I just came across probably one of the best articles I have read on Lotus Notes and Domino.

The author of this document Thomas "Duffbert" Duff is a software developer with nearly 30 years of experience in IT, covering everything from punch cards and tape drives to cloud computing. When he is not developing Notes-based collaboration applications for a large health insurance company, he's usually reading and reviewing books on his blog, Duffbert's Random Musings. He also speaks at software conferences

This article basically addresses Lotus Notes and Domino from 7 main aspects:
1. Notes is more than "just e-mail"
2. Notes and Domino is a powerful (and open) application development platform.
3. Notes is the client, Domino is the server.
4. Notes has a long history of backward compatibility
5. Replication lets you work both online and offline
6. Notes applications can be built for both notes client and for Web browsers
7. Notes is "not dead"

This is a document every CIO / IT manger should read.

User has been using Lotus Notes for quite a while , everything was working fine.,

Now we upgraded the user to Lotus Notes 8.0.2 and every time he tries to send an email. he gets this error. We blew away the ini file and reinstalled the notes client and all seemed fine for a day or 2 and the error came back . The user gets a pop-up window as shown below and it cannot send any emails out.

We tried to roll him back to Lotus Notes 8.0.1 (yeah yeah I know its not a Notes problem!!) but that again fixed the error for a few days and was back again.
Solutions:
Temporary Solution.

Exit the lotus notes client
Edit the notes.ini file and delete the following lines
EXTMGR_ADDINS=nPgpOvid.dll
NSF_HOOKS=nPgpOvid.dll

Removing the two lines shown above from notes.ini and restarting Lotus Notes solved the problem.
Now here is the problem with this work- around...The lines are inserted each time the PGP Desktop restart. So despite the fact that, within PGP Desktop, Tools -> Options -> Messaging, “Secure Email” was not selected and, in Tools -> Options -> Notifier, “Use PGP Notifier” was not selected.

Permanent Solution:
The permanent solution is to remove the addin totally for Lotus Notes. This will not remove the application but it will remove it from protecting the Lotus Notes (email) part permanently and will not re-enable it after a reboot/restart of lotus notes client. Thus removing this error permanently.

To do this, in Windows, go to Start ----> Run and type in

“msiexec /I PGPDesktop.msi PGP_INSTALL_NOTES=0″

In the older versions of Lotus Domino we had 2 mail templates. Mail and domino web access.

The Mail being the supposedly "lighter" and "faster" template for web access to the mailbox and the Domino Web Access (DWA) being the rich and slower one.

Then Lotus combined it all into one template and either using the Notes.ini file or the "ui=" at the end of the url we could switch between the 2 tempates. Despite that it did nothing to the speed.

A lot if us kept screaming "hey lotus. this is just web based access to email. make it lighter , make it faster". And as always they took their time but they listened. Thank you Lotus.

Welcome to the new DWA in Lotus Domino 8.5 and its 3 different modes

This new version comes with 3 modes

Full Mode
Lite Mode
Ultralite Mode

Full Mode.

This is the good old DWA. Big and heavy with all the nice stuff and functionality

Lite Mode:

Just the basic mail and calendar functions. They have removed the options to access journals and other peoples calendars that
are available in the full version

Ultralite Mode

Now this is probably the fastest web access to any email I have ever seen ..Great job Lotus!!!.. In fact I feel access my mail over the web using the Ultralite mode is even faster than the client access on a LAN. Now go figure that one out.

In the past, if we upgraded a users mail file template from his workstation ( believe me there are people that still do this !!!) we have had to go in and upgrade the design of the folders manually from the menu .

<img alt="Image:Upgrade folders when you upgrade design of mailbox. Dont think so!
