This post originally appeared on LinkedIn

I’ve attended hundreds of conferences and spoken at dozens of them over the years. While most people complain that they don’t get always the value they’d like from conferences, I usually do. The job I have now as a Partner at First Round Capital and many of my business relationships can be directly attributed to conferences where I’ve met the right people and connected in the right way. So here it is, from the basics to more advanced tips, my best advice on How To Work A Conference (with a particular Business Development focus on those that involve speakers and an audience, and less about massive trade shows like CES.)

1) The goal of a conference is to LEARN and to CONNECT with people. To start, that means actively listening and learning from your seat in the audience. When connecting with people, the goal is not to tell your life story, or present your 50 page business plan at the first handshake, or to immediately hand over your business card. The goal is to make a good impression, to learn something about and/or show you know something about the other person, and get permission to follow up. The goal of a conference is to learn and connect.

2) Read up on all the speakers – You should have an idea what you’d say ask to each if you get the chance to say hello. For me, right about now I’m pouring over the TED 2013 program guide.

3) Read up on all the attendees- this list is often a harder list to get, but well worth it if you can. For this is one you might have to “socially engineer” it from the conference organizers, or a good alternative angle is to ask someone you know who is a sponsor, otherwise try to get a list at the event from the registration desk. The basic idea is to circle/mark the people you want to talk to, and have an idea of what you’ll say. Great conferences, including TED, are now sharing attendee lists in advance to help everyone better connect.

4) Get there early. Show up early, but at least show up on time. I know someone who started a 30-year business relationship with Peter Drucker because they both showed up on time for a conference and were the first and only ones in the room.

5) Sit in the Front Row. There is ALWAYS a seat in the front row, and you should walk right up to the front and take it. If you arrive late, you should walk past all the people standing around the wall in the back barely listening and head right up to the front. Sitting up there forces you to pay attention and makes you less likely to get buried in your iPhone. Related bonus tips: In the age of social media almost anyone can be considered Press, and a Reserved seat might as well be reserved for you. And the Front Row technique also works in church and other venues.

6) Don’t get buried in your iPhone – Be in the present, and be actively looking for opportunities to connect with people – that’s the reason you’re there.

7) Stand where people pass by – there is usually an obvious choke point of people, where every speaker and attendee will converge or pass through, and it’s a good place to stand to get to meet the people you want to connect with. It might be the registration desk, it might be the entrance to the main room – but you have to stand/chat somewhere and that’s as good a place as any. I’ve heard some people like to stake out a spot in front of the bathrooms, but that’s going a bit too far in my book. Some people make an art of this like Yossi Vardi – I’ve seen him at lots of conferences but never in the audience – he lives in the lobby.

8 ) To connect with speakers, walking up to the podium after their talk can work but has low probability of a quality connection. For a more advanced approach, look for the line between the green room or the A/V setup area and the stage – that can be a better place to meet speakers.

9) Asking a question from the audience – basic. Most conference sessions have a Q&A section at the end, and most of the time there is silence for a few moments before the first question. Assume there will be Q&A and have a great question ready, and state your name and company so that other attendees know you’re there too.

10) Asking a question from the audience – advanced. This is one where you might think out a question far in advance that you’d like to get the answer to in a public venue. I did that here at AllThingsD with Steve Jobs, and while my question had a point of view it was designed to be generic, but it got more specific than I anticipated in the response. Also be ready with a follow up to defend your point if necessary. (starts at about 1:13 if you need to fast forward)

Those are my best ideas – I’d love to hear about yours in the comments. Good luck at your next conference!

Most days I ride the train from Trenton to NYC, and I’m always online and always trying to get the best/fastest internet connection I can. I also sometimes notice the Broadband Hotspots that other commuters have, and one time on the same train I saw a hot spot called “Red Sox” and another one called “Red Sox Suck” – but I digress…

What I wanted to do was test out who’s got the fastest broadband wireless speeds between Verizon and AT&T on their latest/greatest 4G/LTE devices and also Amtrak Connect via their on-board WiFi. So last Friday I brought a bunch of gadgets and used SpeedTest, and here’s what I found with a fairly extensive set of tests at multiple points between Trenton and NYC on the 7:16AM Amtrak:

Fastest Average Download – Verizon iPhone 5 at 16.54 MB/s

Fastest Average Upload – Verizon Galaxy SIII at 9.54 MB/s

Fastest Download – Verizon iPhone 5 at 26.27MB/s in North Brunswick, NJ

Fastest Upload – AT&T iPad Mini at 14.8 MB/s in Newark, NJ

Worst Internet You Can Possibly Get On A Train – Amtrak Connect was almost a complete failure, averaging .93 MB/s download and .38 MB/s upload when it worked. This is will be no surprise to frequent Amtrak travelers, and can be boiled down to three words: Amtrak Connect Doesn’t, or 4 letters – BYOI – Bring Your Own Internet

Conclusion – for my money and my commute, a Verizon iPhone 5 is the best internet device on the train, and not only works under the Hudson River Tunnel but seems to speed up there.

Methodology – I ran SpeedTest on every device (combination of web site and app) and tested the speed at various points from Trenton to NYC between 7:15AM and 8:15AM on Friday, January 4 2013. I did this once before and have to give Verizon credit for improving the speeds of their network since then.

According to Wikipedia, the first WIRED magazine issue was January 1993. I’d pick 20 years ago today, 1/1/93 as the exact date, as that’s the date of the first back page email/editorial from Nicholas Negroponte (nicholas@internet) to Louis Rosetto (lr@wired.com). It’s hard to overestimate what a big deal this magazine was at that time – it was the single best compilation of all the things around technology that I was interested in. When I saw the first WIRED in a bookstore I bought 5 copies and gave the other 4 to friends – it was that cool and important. I attended my first TED conference around the same time, where I learned how Editor/Publisher Loius Rosetto brought a mockup of WIRED to the previous TED and got Nicholas Negroponte to agree to invest and contribute on the spot. I’m a 20 year WIRED subscriber it’s still something I read cover to cover every month. And in a world where magazines are waning, it’s gotten even better. I sat down with the most recent Editor Chris Anderson last year he said they had just had their most profitable issue ever.

Here’s an excerpt of the original manfesto at the beginning of the Premiere Issue of WIRED.

The medium, or process, of our time – electric technology – is reshaping and restructuring patterns of social interdependence and every aspect of our personal life. It is forcing us to reconsider and re-evaluate practically Everything Is Changing…. every thought, every action, and every institution formerly taken for granted. You, your education, your government, your family, your neighborhood, and they’re changing your job, your relation “the others.”

Why Wired? Becuase the Digital Revolutoin is whipping through our lives like a Bengali typhoon – while the mainstream media is still groping for the snooze button….

Our first instruction to our writers? Amaze us.

And they have for 20 years. Here’s to 20 more, and here’s what a well dog-eared collection of every issue of WIRED looks like – so far.

The higher order bit here is that marketers like Red Bull can create options for themselves – they don’t only have to buy commercials and advertisements on someone else’s media anymore. Content and advertising are blurring together more and more, and the new social platforms allow marketers to increasingly build direct relationships with fans. They aren’t the first advertiser to figure this out. But they’re taking it to new levels, and according to the Wsll Street Journal, they’re planning on creating 1,000 hours of Action Sports content in 2013. Their YouTube channel is #2 in sports behind only the NBA. with 1.3 million subscribers and a half a billion views. Oh, and they sold 4.6 billion little blue, red and yellow cans of liquid energy in 2011.

Some people think it was Zig Ziglar, and I can respect that. But for my money, Jerry Weintraub is the best of the best, and you may never have heard of him.

If you travel in Hollywood circles you know his reputation precedes him, and you know him as one of the great Producers. Among his many accolades he managed Frank Sinatra, Elvis, Led Zeppelin, and he’s the guy behind the movies Nashville, Diner, The Karate Kid, and Ocean’s 11, 12 and 13, and a lot more.

I first got to know about him through his autobiography, When I Stop Talking You’ll Know I’m Dead, with the perfect sub-title “Useful Stories from a Persuasive Man.” He’s not a perfect man by any stretch, but he embodies what I think are the the two most important characteristics in a great sales or business development person – Persistance and Empathy. He sold, and cajoled, and willed ideas into existance – but he did it with the OTHER person in mind, and he NEVER gave up. The Elvis story alone is worth the price of the book: he had a dream that he’d take Elvis on tour, he cold called his manager Colonel Tom Parker every day for a year until he said yes, he came up with a million dollar advance he didn’t have in a couple days, and wait until you hear how they used prison inmates to guarantee Elvis played to a packed house. I’m purposefully linking to the audio version, so you can hear him tell his own story in his own words.

Last year HBO made a documentary on him called His Way .
