If you love gear with a legit military background, you’ve probably heard the story: Luminox is the official watch of the U.S. Navy SEALs. But this isn’t some made-up marketing tale – it’s the real deal. Back in 1993, the SEALs needed a dive watch that wouldn’t let them down during night ops. They teamed up with Swiss designers and cracked the code on a self-illuminating system that worked like nothing else. That partnership gave birth to Luminox – literally “bright night ” in Latin – in 1994. And the watch that started it all? The Original Navy SEAL series, with the iconic reference 3001 leading the charge.

So, do the SEALs still wear it today? While special forces are always testing new tech (like the AR goggles the Navy’s evaluating for maintenance in 2025), the historical record is clear. After its creation, Luminox became standard-issue for the teams. Its reputation for reliability quickly spread, landing it on the wrists of Air Force F-117 Nighthawk pilots, FBI agents, and search-and-rescue units across the globe. This wasn’t a coincidence – it was a testament.

But what actually makes it a “military ” watch? Forget about looks for a second. It all comes down to performance when it matters most. Take the 25-year self-powered light system: tiny tritium gas tubes (LLT) on the dial glow continuously, no charging or button-pressing needed. In total darkness, that’s not just convenient – it’s crucial. Then there’s the build. The modern 3001 EVO uses a tough yet lightweight carbon compound case, scratch-resistant mineral glass, and solid 200-meter water resistance. Everything is built to endure. And with a clean, high-contrast dial and a unidirectional bezel, reading the time is instant and error-free. No fuss, no guesswork.

Good news – you don’t need to enlist to get one. The Luminox Navy SEAL 3001 series is still in production and surprisingly accessible. Check authorized dealers on trusted global platforms like Chrono24, and you’ll find brand-new pieces complete with a two-year warranty. For a Swiss-made watch with this kind of pedigree, the price is refreshingly honest – usually hovering between $400 and $500. You’re not buying a museum piece; you’re getting a direct descendant of a tool watch that’s been there and done that.

So, is the Luminox Navy SEAL 3001 a true military watch? Without a doubt. Its very existence stems from a Special Forces request, and its adoption by dozens of elite units says everything about its grit and reliability. Tech will always move forward, but the core promise of the 3001 – extreme legibility and day-in, day-out toughness – hasn’t changed. If you want a robust, purpose-built watch with an authentic story, this isn’t just about wearing a cool design. It’s about strapping a piece of living history onto your wrist.

Few objects in modern culture manage to function simultaneously as tools, symbols, and obsessions. Rolex, more than any other watchmaker, occupies this rare space. It is at once a precision instrument, a cinematic shorthand for ambition and success, and the gravitational center of vintage collecting. Whether appearing on the wrist of a fictional character or behind the locked door of a private exhibition, Rolex continues to assert a relevance that transcends timekeeping.

When a Watch Drives the Story
In Good Fortune, Aziz Ansari does not treat replica watches as background props, but as narrative devices with emotional weight. A lifelong watch enthusiast and alumnus of Talking Watches, Ansari understood that a Rolex could function much like a literary MacGuffin – an object whose meaning evolves as the story unfolds.
Early discussions with Cameron Barr, founder of Craft + Tailored, focused not on visibility, but on resonance. A Paul Newman Daytona was dismissed as too obvious. Instead, the pair settled on a yellow gold Rolex Daytona Ref. 6263 – a reference prized by insiders yet subtle enough to feel believable on screen. With its screw-down pushers, acrylic bezel, and Valjoux-based chronograph caliber, the 6263 represents a high point of Rolex’s manually wound Daytona era, before luxury overtook pure function.
Gold, too, was a deliberate choice. It conveyed weight – financial and emotional – without straying into caricature. The watch becomes a mirror for the character’s psychological arc: initially a marker of self-validation, later an object of fixation and leverage.
That same symbolic logic extends to the film’s broader watch casting. A Seiko SKX007, utilitarian and anonymous, contrasts sharply with a 1978 Rolex GMT-Master Ref. 1675 “Pepsi”, a model synonymous with global mobility and earned confidence. When characters exchange lives, they exchange watches – reinforcing Rolex’s ability to communicate identity without exposition.

Authenticity as a Rolex Principle
Crucially, every watch seen on screen is real. Barr and the production team worked closely to ensure period correctness and mechanical legitimacy. For those fluent in horology, such details matter. A wrong bezel insert, an incorrect bracelet, or an implausible reference would fracture the illusion instantly.
This insistence on authenticity mirrors Rolex’s own historical approach. The brand’s reputation was not built on storytelling alone, but on repeated real-world validation – across oceans, war zones, and scientific expeditions.

From the Wrist to the Archive
That same devotion to authenticity finds its purest expression in the collector world. Despite growing interest in independent and alternative brands, the cult of fake Rolex remains unmatched. Events like Rolliefest 2026 in New York demonstrate the brand’s ability to unite collectors across generations and geographies.
Few expressions of that obsession are as complete as Mike Wood’s private exhibition, For Exhibition Only, held on the outskirts of Liverpool. Over two months, Wood opened his personal archive – more than 200 vintage Rolex watches and artifacts – to invited guests only. What awaited them was not merely a collection, but an ecosystem.
Vitrines overflowed with history: Bubblebacks, early Oyster Princes, MilSub references, Double Red Sea-Dwellers, gem-set Day-Dates, and Prisoner of War watches. Surrounding them were period boxes, COMEX diving equipment, vintage advertising, and even a Rolex service bench from the 1970s – objects rarely seen outside institutional archives.
Among the standouts was a 1946 Rolex Ref. 3372 Bubbleback in 18k yellow gold, featuring a pink Verga-signed dial and a matching original bracelet. Pieces like this illustrate an often-forgotten truth: Rolex’s early experimentation with precious metals and regional signatures laid the groundwork for today’s collector hierarchies.
Equally compelling were non-wristwatch artifacts, such as the Waterlily and Trident fishbowl displays, once used to demonstrate Oyster case water resistance in the 1960s, and an 1870 master workshop clock acquired early in Rolex’s history – long before the brand name became synonymous with luxury.

Education, Not Just Accumulation
For Wood, the exhibition was never about rarity alone. It was about transmission. Younger collectors were encouraged to handle watches they had previously known only through auction catalogs and Instagram feeds. Bubblebacks were no longer abstract; they were tactile, contextualized, and human.
This philosophy echoes Rolex’s enduring appeal. The brand is not sustained solely by scarcity or marketing, but by a layered history that rewards deeper study – one reference, one caseback, one patinated dial at a time.

The Enduring Gravity of Rolex
Whether driving a film’s emotional arc or anchoring a lifetime of collecting, Rolex continues to operate beyond the limits of conventional luxury. It is a language spoken fluently by filmmakers, divers, collectors, and first-time buyers alike.
In a world saturated with watches, Rolex remains singular – not because it tells the loudest story, but because it has lived the longest, most credible one.

Emerging onto the luxury scene in 2026, MadeWorn represents the passionate venture of Blaine Halvorson, a figure already respected for his entrepreneurial success. Halvorson, a dedicated watch enthusiast, embarked on a path familiar to collectors with deep pockets and distinct tastes: integrating bespoke fake watches into his unique lifestyle brand. The execution, however, hinges entirely on the individual’s vision, resources, and willingness to navigate the complexities of high-end watch production.

Halvorson’s chosen approach resonates powerfully within collecting circles. MadeWorn acquires Rolex watches – both modern and vintage – and entrusts them to master American gun engravers. These artisans transform the iconic watches, covering cases and bracelets with breathtaking, intricate surface decoration. Halvorson’s true challenge lies not in sourcing the talent, but in seamlessly integrating these singular creations into the MadeWorn identity and crafting a clear, compelling narrative for potential buyers.

Visiting Halvorson in his exclusive Los Angeles workshop, a space as curated as the man himself, offered insight into his world. Adorned in his own brand’s carefully distressed apparel and intricate tattoos, Halvorson embodies the MadeWorn aesthetic – a blend of craftsman and artist. This venture fulfills a long-held ambition, made possible after the sale of his previous business, Junkfood Clothing, in 2005. Today, he channels his energy into collecting unique artifacts, crafting premium clothing and accessories, and operating from one of LA’s most distinctive creative hubs.

Halvorson’s personal narrative, deeply rooted in a rugged upbringing in Bozeman, Montana, fundamentally shapes MadeWorn. His aesthetic celebrates rediscovering the forgotten, embracing the raw beauty of nature, and venerating meticulous handcraftsmanship. While acting as creative director, he remains a hands-on maker, evidenced by his skill in crafting high-end, custom footwear.

Hand-engraving watches, however, falls outside his personal expertise. Drawing inspiration from exquisitely decorated firearms, Halvorson sought out renowned American gun engravers, commissioning them to apply their art to wristwatches. While not entirely novel – Montana itself is home to watch companies like Bozeman Watch Co. and Montana Watch Co., the latter known for gun-inspired case engravings – MadeWorn’s execution is distinct.

The brand’s model shares parallels with Bamford Watch Department, another notable Rolex modifier. While Bamford focuses on altering textures and colors, MadeWorn’s nascent collection centers on profound customization through engraving (or “carving,” a term Halvorson prefers for its implication of intense manual effort) and unique bracelets applied to Rolex bases.

This manual effort presents significant challenges. Modern fake Rolex watches utilize 904L steel, an alloy prized for corrosion resistance but notoriously difficult to machine. Engravers accustomed to softer metals like gold or silver reportedly voiced considerable frustration while working on these hardened steel canvases. Halvorson acknowledged the engravers’ complaints about the demanding material.

Despite the difficulties, the results are undeniably stunning. The engravings exhibit world-class precision and artistry, comparable to the finest decorations found on custom firearms or blades. Each MadeWorn watch represents approximately a month of painstaking labor, guaranteeing that no two pieces will ever be identical. This commitment to uniqueness inherently complicates production. Scaling beyond true “piece unique” status would require a constant influx of base Rolex watches and a continuous stream of fresh, compelling engraving designs from the artisans. While future offerings might include limited editions or non-Rolex bases, the current collection remains firmly rooted in customized Rolex watches.

MadeWorn occasionally enhances these engraved creations with a black DLC coating, adding another layer of visual intrigue. Observing two engraved Rolex Explorer watches side-by-side – one in bare steel, the other DLC-coated – highlighted the difference. While the black version possesses a certain coolness, the uncoated steel arguably offers superior legibility for appreciating the intricate engraving work. Future blackened pieces might incorporate colored inlays to better highlight the carvings, showcasing the creative freedom inherent in producing one-of-a-kind objects.

Among the examples viewed, an engraved steel replica Rolex Datejust II stood out. Witnessing this quintessential “business watch” meticulously transformed into a canvas of dense, attractive decoration was captivating. It’s certainly not a piece for the minimalist; it demands appreciation for “artistic density.” For those who relish such detail, it represents a remarkable, albeit costly, convergence of horology and art. Conversely, admirers of stark Scandinavian design will likely find its embellished lines a departure from classic purity.

Enjoying a MadeWorn watch doesn’t require allegiance to the brand’s apparel. These watches stand apart as distinct artifacts, though they can certainly complement the broader MadeWorn aesthetic if desired. Halvorson’s dedication to assembling exceptional talent for these creations is commendable. For watch lovers who also cherish American craftsmanship and unique artistry, a MadeWorn Rolex offers a potent synthesis of passions. True to its founder’s vision, the brand remains open to special commissions, embodying Halvorson’s core mission: uniting creative visionaries to forge something extraordinary.

The 2015 debut of the Rolex Oyster Perpetual 39 (OP39) was met with genuine enthusiasm. Trying it on at Baselworld that year left an indelible impression: Rolex had seemingly struck gold with its dimensions. At 39mm, this entry-level steel sports watch presented a near-perfect fit, flattering a wide range of wrists regardless of gender, all at a relatively accessible price point of $5,700. Unlike the perpetually elusive Daytona or Submariner, acquiring an Oyster Perpetual proved refreshingly straightforward, with minimal wait times at authorized dealers.

Despite these compelling attributes, my initial excitement waned. The launch colors – dark rhodium, red grape, and blue – failed to ignite a lasting spark. While each had its merits, I suspected any might eventually feel monotonous on the wrist. Yet, the OP39’s impeccable proportions and elegantly slim profile lingered in my mind, securing its place on a mental list of future acquisitions.

Three years later, in 2018, Rolex delivered a surprise: two new dial options for the OP39 – classic black and pure white. Though I hadn’t seen them in person at the time, a growing chorus from fellow journalists and collectors declared the white dial variant exceptional, with some even elevating it to “grail” status. The acclaimed novelist and watch connoisseur Gary Shteyngart famously dubbed it his potential “exit watch,” a testament to its perceived perfection.

My own path to the white OP39 was winding. Unconvinced by the initial palette, my search for the ideal 39mm Rolex led me to the Explorer I (Ref. 214270). I acquired one from a Prague boutique and wore it contentedly for a period. That contentment shifted, however, during a casual gathering with fellow watch enthusiasts in 2018. One collector arrived wearing the elusive white OP39, paired not with its standard bracelet, but a handsome vintage-style green leather strap. Its allure was so potent that I confess to barely registering his A. Lange & Söhne Zeitwerk or other independent pieces; my focus was entirely captivated by the Rolex.

Holding it, the dial revealed its subtle magic. It wasn’t a stark, clinical white, but rather a warmer, softer eggshell hue, especially evident under bright light. This gentle tone created a sophisticated contrast to the sharp, polished bezel and endowed the watch with a distinctly elegant character. Remarkably, despite being Rolex’s most accessible sports model, the OP39 shared the same luxurious white gold hands and applied hour markers found on the brand’s flagship sports watches. The case itself was a masterpiece of understated refinement – slim, with finely brushed surfaces on the top, polished flanks, and that signature polished bezel framing the captivating dial.

It was an immediate revelation on the wrist. The OP39 in white felt like the ultimate GADA (Go Anywhere, Do Anything) watch. Had I pursued a one-watch collection, this would have been the unequivocal choice. Its versatility was breathtaking: equally at home with formal business attire, business casual, or a simple t-shirt and jeans. Its 100-meter water resistance meant seamless transitions from office to poolside. Swapping the robust Oyster bracelet for a leather strap in cooler months only enhanced its everyday appeal without diminishing its presence. This watch exuded adaptable sophistication.

By early summer 2018, my resolve solidified. I contacted the Prague Rolex boutique, securing both a white OP39 and a Submariner (Ref. 114060) for collection in August. To pave the way, I parted with my Explorer I, selling it to a photographer friend in Prague well below market value. The Explorer, while a fine watch, occupied an undefined space for me – neither the pure simplicity of the Oyster Perpetual nor the rugged tool-watch identity of the Submariner.

The evening of August 31st brought the long-awaited moment: both the pristine white OP39 and the Submariner were mine. Then, less than twenty-four hours later, Rolex delivered a stunning blow: both references were officially discontinued. While the Submariner evolved into a new generation with a more symmetrical case and enhanced movement, the abrupt cancellation of the OP39 after a mere two-year production run was deeply surprising. Given the fervent admiration it garnered from collectors and insiders, and considering the likely limited quantities of the white dial variant produced, its swift departure felt particularly poignant.

Rolex replaced the 39mm Oyster Perpetual with a larger 41mm model (OP41), featuring a spectrum of vibrant “Stella-inspired” dials, a subtly revised dial layout, and an updated movement. The OP41, especially in its bold colors like the turquoise GaryG acquired, achieved significant popularity, offering a more playful and contemporary expression of the sports replica watch ideal.

Despite the success of its larger successor, the OP39, especially in white, is profoundly missed. A persistent undercurrent of appreciation flows through watch forums and publications, lamenting the loss of what many considered a near-perfect everyday watch. Countless enthusiasts who hesitated found their opportunity vanished. The consequences of its brief lifespan are clear in the secondary market: prices have soared well beyond $9,000. As available examples dwindle and desire remains strong, their value seems destined only to climb, cementing the white-dial OP39’s status as a modern classic cut tragically short.

In 2025, Rolex enthusiasts witnessed a milestone: the debut of the Land-Dweller, the brand’s first major release since the rebranded 1908 collection. Completing the trio of “Dweller” models – alongside the aquatic Sea-Dweller and aviation-inspired Sky-Dweller – this watch has sparked both admiration and debate. While its commercial success seems assured, given Rolex’s dominance in luxury horology, the Land-Dweller’s reception underscores the delicate balance between innovation and tradition.

A Name Without a Spark
From the outset, the “Land-Dweller” moniker drew scrutiny. Unlike its siblings, whose names evoke adventure and aspiration, “Land-Dweller” feels pedestrian. Humans have always sought to conquer skies and seas, but land? That’s where we already live. The name lacks the imaginative pull of its counterparts, framing the watch as a tool for the mundane rather than a companion for the extraordinary. Though Rolex likely aimed to anchor its “land, air, sea” trilogy, the choice risks blending into the background. Yet, as history shows, even awkward names fade when craftsmanship speaks – and here, Rolex’s engineering roars.

A Movement That Redefines Precision
At the heart of the Land-Dweller lies the Caliber 7135, a marvel of modern mechanics. Unveiled at Watches & Wonders 2025, this movement eclipses its predecessors with innovations like the Dynapulse escapement – a silicon-and-ceramic hybrid replacing the traditional Swiss lever. Operating at 5Hz, it achieves near-surgical accuracy, resisting environmental interference from magnetism to temperature shifts. Paired with a three-day power reserve and showcased through a sapphire caseback, the 7135 isn’t just a movement; it’s a statement. Rolex’s restraint in touting its supremacy speaks volumes, letting the technology’s silent brilliance captivate purists.

A Dial in Search of Identity
Visually, the Land-Dweller’s face is a study in contrasts. Bold lumed markers ensure legibility, while a honeycomb texture nods to archival designs. Yet the result feels disjointed – a sporty dial grafted onto a dressier frame. The hexagonal pattern, reminiscent of game boards, lacks the elegance expected at this tier. While diamond-adorned variants soften the austerity, the base model’s starkness may alienate those seeking harmony between form and function. Time may refine this, as it did for the Sky-Dweller’s once-polarizing design, but for now, the dial remains an acquired taste.

Ergonomics Elevated
Where the Land-Dweller truly shines is wearability. At 40mm wide and under 10mm thick, its integrated bracelet melds seamlessly to the wrist, echoing the sleekness of 1970s OysterQuartz models. The multi-link design balances flexibility and structure, though micro-adjustments – a staple in other Rolex lines – are missed. In a market flooded with integrated bracelets, Rolex’s offering rivals pricier competitors, proving that comfort need not compromise sophistication.

A Niche Without a Narrative
Rolex’s challenge lies in positioning. The Land-Dweller’s broad appeal – accurate, land-centric, versatile – is also its weakness. Unlike the Milgauss, with its anti-magnetic legacy for engineers, this model’s identity feels nebulous. Is it a tool watch? A dress piece? Rolex’s tagline – “for those who build tomorrow’s world today” – hints at a kinship with the Milgauss’s intellectual allure, yet the connection remains subtle. Without clearer storytelling, the replica Rolex Land-Dweller risks being overshadowed by icons like the Submariner or Datejust.

Accessibility from Day One
This inclusivity defies the brand’s usual trickle-release strategy, acknowledging today’s price-sensitive market. While still a luxury, the Land-Dweller’s value proposition is sharp – a calculated move to cement Rolex as both aspirational and attainable.

The Rolex Land-Dweller is a study in contrasts: groundbreaking yet familiar, luxurious yet pragmatic. Its movement sets a new benchmark, and its wearability delights, but its name and design language yearn for refinement. For Rolex, this isn’t a misstep – it’s a prologue. Much like the Sky-Dweller’s evolution, the Land-Dweller’s story is just beginning, promising iterations that may yet transform initial skepticism into reverence. In the world of horology, even crowns need polishing.

As whispers of the discontinuation of the beloved Pepsi GMT-Master II (126710BLRO) grow louder, speculation is mounting about its successor. Enter the legendary Rolex GMT-Master II “Coke,” a watch that could mark the triumphant return of the iconic black and red bi-color bezel.

The Pepsi, with its distinctive blue and red bezel, has been a cornerstone of Rolex’s GMT-Master II lineup, celebrated for its vibrant aesthetic and functionality. However, as Rolex continues to evolve, it seems the brand is poised to revisit one of its most iconic designs: the Coke. This classic colorway, absent from the collection since the pre-ceramic GMT-Master II 16710, could make a grand comeback in 2025, blending nostalgia with modern innovation.

The Rolex GMT-Master II “Coke” is expected to feature a black and red bi-color ceramic bezel, a combination that has long been associated with sophistication and boldness. The black and red scheme, often referred to as “Coke” by enthusiasts, first gained popularity in the 1980s and 1990s, becoming a symbol of adventure and global travel. Its return would not only pay homage to Rolex’s rich heritage but also introduce a fresh yet familiar aesthetic to the modern GMT-Master II lineup.

The use of ceramic, or Cerachrom as Rolex calls it, ensures that the bezel is not only visually striking but also highly durable. Resistant to scratches and fading, the Cerachrom bezel is a testament to Rolex’s commitment to combining beauty with functionality. The black and red contrast would enhance legibility, making it easier for travelers and professionals to track multiple time zones with precision.

The Coke’s return would also reflect Rolex’s ability to listen to its audience. Over the years, collectors and fans have expressed a deep appreciation for the black and red bezel, making it one of the most requested designs in recent memory. By bringing back the Coke, Rolex would not only satisfy its loyal fanbase but also attract a new generation of watch enthusiasts eager to own a piece of horological history or by visiting https://www.replicaimitation.com.

2025 could be the ideal year for the Coke’s resurgence. As replica Rolex continues to celebrate its legacy while pushing the boundaries of innovation, the reintroduction of a classic design like the Coke would serve as a bridge between the brand’s past and future. The timing also aligns with the growing demand for vintage-inspired watches, as collectors increasingly seek watches that tell a story and carry a sense of heritage.

The GMT-Master II “Coke” would likely retain the technical excellence that has become synonymous with Rolex. Features such as the robust Oyster case, the precision of the Caliber 3285 movement, and the practicality of the GMT function would ensure that the replica watch is as functional as it is beautiful. Whether worn by a globetrotting executive or a watch aficionado, the Coke would be a versatile companion for any occasion.

The potential return of the Rolex GMT-Master II “Coke” is more than just a new release; it’s a celebration of Rolex’s enduring legacy. By reviving a beloved design, Rolex would reaffirm its position as a brand that honors its history while continuously innovating for the future. The Coke’s black and red bezel, with its timeless appeal and bold character, has the potential to become a modern classic, cherished by collectors and enthusiasts alike.

Rolex is renowned for its exceptional craftsmanship and use of premium materials. Each Rolex watch is meticulously crafted in Switzerland, with in-house movements that are certified as chronometers, ensuring unparalleled accuracy. The brand uses materials like 904L stainless steel, 18k gold, and platinum, which are more durable and corrosion-resistant than those used by most other watchmakers. Rolex replica watches are also rigorously tested for water resistance, shock resistance, and overall durability, making them a benchmark for luxury watch quality.

Bulova, on the other hand, focuses on delivering reliable and stylish watches at a more affordable price point. While Bulova watches may not use the same high-end materials as Rolex, they are still well-crafted and durable. Bulova incorporates Japanese and Swiss movements in their watches, with some models featuring their proprietary Precisionist movement, known for its high accuracy. The brand often uses stainless steel, mineral crystals, and sapphire crystals in their designs, ensuring a balance between quality and affordability.

Rolex is known for its timeless designs, which have remained largely unchanged for decades. The brand emphasizes tradition and heritage, with iconic models like the cheap Rolex Submariner, Daytona, and Datejust. Rolex’s innovation lies in its ability to refine and perfect its designs over time, ensuring they remain relevant and desirable.

Bulova, meanwhile, is more experimental with its designs, offering a wide range of styles from classic to modern. The brand is also known for its innovation, particularly in quartz technology. The Precisionist line, for example, boasts one of the most accurate quartz movements available, with a sweeping second hand that mimics the smooth motion of a mechanical fake watch. Bulova’s focus on innovation and variety makes it appealing to a broader audience.

The most significant difference between Bulova and Rolex is the price. Rolex watches are luxury items, often costing thousands of dollars, and are seen as investments due to their enduring value and prestige. Bulova watches, while not in the same luxury tier, offer excellent value for their price, making them accessible to a wider range of consumers.

First on our list is Jeff Bezos, the founder of Amazon. Despite his immense wealth and love for luxurious superyachts, Bezos has a surprisingly understated taste in watches. He’s frequently seen with his Ulysse Nardin Dual Time (ref. 243-55-7/91), a classic piece he’s owned for over ten years. This watch exudes sophistication while being relatively discreet, embodying a form of ‘stealth wealth.’

Additionally, during the Blue Origin NS-16 sub-orbital mission last year, Bezos donned an OMEGA Speedmaster Professional Moonwatch on a custom Velcro strap.

Similarly, Elon Musk sports an OMEGA, specifically the Seamaster Aqua Terra. He’s also been spotted wearing extravagant Richard Mille watches. However, like many billionaire tech moguls – including Larry Page and Mark Zuckerberg – Musk often opts to go without a watch.

His standout piece is his clone TAG Heuer Carrera Calibre 1887 Chronograph ‘SpaceX’ (ref. CAR2015.FC6321). Limited to just 2012 pieces, this retro watch celebrates Musk’s aerospace company and marks the 50th anniversary of a Tag Heuer fake watch being worn in space by John Glenn during the 1962 Mercury-Atlas 6 mission.

Bill Gates is often associated with immense wealth, yet his watch choices are remarkably modest. Frequently, he’s seen wearing a Casio Duro 200M (ref. MDV106-1AV), an affordable quartz dive watch that retails for under $100.

Gates clearly appreciates value; the Duro has gained a cult following among collectors for its quality at a low price point. He’s also been known to wear G-SHOCK watches and a TAG Heuer Professional 2000, which he reportedly gifted to an employee after a conference in the Philippines.

Next, we have Warren Buffett, the chairman of Berkshire Hathaway, known for his frugality – he still resides in the same house he purchased in Nebraska in 1958 for $31,500. His one indulgence appears to be his Rolex Day-Date ‘President’ 36 (ref. 18038).

While not the priciest watch available, the replica Rolex President exudes power and prestige. Buffett has owned this iconic solid gold watch for decades, making it a significant part of his collection.

When Rolex unveiled the Deepsea 136668LB at Watches & Wonders this past April, it immediately grabbed attention for all the right reasons. The Deepsea line has long been known as Rolex’s most imposing dive watch, with water resistance reaching depths of 3,900 meters. While the Deepsea has always been a rugged tool, this new version is unlike any other – it’s crafted entirely from 18k yellow gold, making it not only an engineering marvel but also an unexpected luxury statement. Weighing in at a staggering 320 grams, the watch is as heavy as it is striking, prompting both admiration and skepticism. After spending some time with this massive watch, it’s clear why it’s so polarizing.

Some watches are instantly understandable: their design is logical, their function clear. Then there are replica watches like the Rolex Deepsea 136668LB, which provoke mixed reactions and divide opinions at first glance. Some collectors love the idea of an ultra-heavy, gold dive watch; others find it unnecessary, even absurd. Initially, I had the same reaction. At 44mm wide and 17.7mm thick, the Deepsea was already large. Add in the yellow gold construction, and it tips the scales at an eye-watering 320 grams – more than double the weight of a standard Rolex Submariner in stainless steel. On paper, this watch seemed almost unwearable. But, after reflecting on it further, I began to appreciate the bizarre logic behind it.

It’s true that diving to 3,900 meters requires a watch with exceptional durability. At such depths, the pressure is immense – nearly 380 times the pressure at sea level. Only specialized equipment, like the Deepsea Challenger, can withstand those kinds of forces. For most people, however, this level of water resistance is overkill. In fact, most dive watches are never submerged beyond a pool or the occasional snorkeling trip. Still, replica Rolex insists that a watch capable of withstanding such extreme conditions must be built to these specifications.

But here’s the paradox: the very same watch that’s engineered for extreme conditions is also made of 18k yellow gold – a material more associated with luxury than utility. On one hand, it’s a technical marvel, a watch designed to endure the harshest environments. On the other hand, it’s a luxury product, meant to shine in the spotlight rather than the depths. To many, this blend of function and opulence seems contradictory. And yet, there’s something alluring about the weight of gold. For some collectors, the heft of a watch contributes to the feeling of luxury. I personally tend to prefer clone watches with more substantial weight – something that feels solid and important on the wrist. However, I’ve never been particularly drawn to the added weight of gold; steel does the job just fine.

Despite these reservations, I found that the replica Rolex Deepsea 136668LB grew on me. When I first handled it at Watches & Wonders, I was struck by how impractical it seemed. But after spending more time with the watch, I began to understand its appeal. Yes, it’s heavy. Yes, it’s large. But on the wrist, the weight is surprisingly manageable. The bracelet helps distribute the mass evenly, preventing it from feeling top-heavy or unwieldy. I have wrists on the larger side (19cm in circumference), and while it’s not a watch I would wear daily, it didn’t feel as uncomfortable as I expected. The quality of the finish – especially the gold case, titanium caseback, and Glidelock extension system – is unmistakably Rolex. It’s a finely crafted watch that offers a satisfying experience, despite its size.

The Rolex Deepsea 136668LB is a watch that doesn’t fully make sense – but that’s part of its charm. It’s undeniably a well-made piece, but its size, weight, and purpose make it a statement watch more than a practical tool. While it’s unlikely to be used by any serious diver as part of their kit, and the 3,900-meter water resistance is mostly a bragging right, it still manages to impress. For those who want to make a bold statement on their wrist, the Deepsea 136668LB is certainly a conversation starter – a massive, golden flex that demands attention wherever you go.

This week, we delve into the realm of vintage Rolex watches that preceded the iconic models we cherish today. While some of these watches share cases and dials with their renowned successors, they lack the legendary names we associate with replica Rolex. Others are distinctly different, yet significant in their own right. Join us as we explore these remarkable “pre-icon” Rolex models.

Before we begin, it’s essential to note that several watches featured in this list are considered integral to the lineage of Rolex’s most celebrated designs. The absence of a name on the dial is often sufficient for a watch to qualify as “pre-icon.” As we’ll discover, many of these models command high prices in the market, reflecting the value Rolex enthusiasts place on such anomalies. Let’s dive in.

First on our list is the Rolex ref. 6150, produced in 1952 and 1953, often referred to as the “Pre-Explorer.” This model was created alongside the first Explorer, ref. 6350. While the latter featured “Explorer” printed on the dial, the 6150 did not, though it retains a similar aesthetic. The 6150 boasts a 35.5mm case and the iconic black 3-6-9 “Explorer dial,” making it a standout in terms of readability.

The dial of the ref. 6150 is distinct, displaying “Rolex Oyster Perpetual” at the top and “Precision” at the bottom, unlike the Explorer ref. 6350, which reads “clone Rolex Oyster Perpetual Explorer” above and “Officially Certified Chronometer” below. The movement is another notable difference; the ref. 6150 houses the self-winding caliber A296, while the 6350 features a chronometer-certified version of the same movement. Although most Pre-Explorers lack the “Explorer” designation, some rare examples do exist.

Due to their rarity, prices for the Pre-Explorer 6150 typically start around €35,000 and can reach up to €75,000 for well-preserved pieces. Exceptional examples, particularly those with unique histories, can command even higher prices, capturing the excitement surrounding the early days of the Explorer line.

Next, we have the Rolex Submariner ref. 6200, known as the “King Sub.” This model features an Explorer dial similar to our first watch. The “King Sub” earned its nickname for being the first Submariner to sport the 8mm “big crown” with a “Brevet” signature. Other famous Submariners, like the ref. 6538 worn by Sean Connery as James Bond, also feature this oversized crown, making them highly sought after by collectors.

The ref. 6200 was produced from 1955 to 1956 and came with two dial variations. One displays only the replica Rolex logo and “Oyster Perpetual,” while the other includes the Submariner name. With a slightly thicker 38mm case and a depth rating of 200m, this model is powered by the same caliber A296 found in the Pre-Explorer. Only 303 pieces were produced, contributing to its status as one of the rarest Submariners.

Our next pick is the Submariner ref. 6205, released in 1954. Early models of the 6205 notably lacked the “Submariner” text, with production lasting just one year and only 810 examples created. This “Small Crown Submariner” features a 38mm stainless steel case and is water-resistant to 100 meters. Powered by the caliber A260, it is regarded as an upgrade from the A296.

The 6205 is predominantly found at auctions, commanding prices between €100,000 and €200,000, with pristine examples reaching even higher. While the ref. 6204 is recognized as the first Submariner, the 6205 without the “Submariner” text is rarer and more desirable.

Next, we turn to the Rolex Chronograph ref. 6238, affectionately known as the “Pre-Daytona.” Produced from 1962 to 1968, this model serves as a bridge between vintage Rolex chronographs and the modern Daytona. With a 36mm case and a smooth bezel featuring a tachymeter scale, the ref. 6238 led to the introduction of the Daytona ref. 6239.

During its production run, Rolex replica created approximately 3,500 stainless steel models, along with a limited number in yellow and rose gold. With up to 14 dial variations, the ref. 6238 is available in silver, gray, and black, each offering a unique character. The watch is powered by the legendary Valjoux 72 movement, later replaced by the Valjoux 722 in subsequent versions.

Prices for the ref. 6238 range from €35,000 to €200,000, particularly for models with black dials or gold cases. This remarkable watch remains a top contender among vintage Rolex chronographs.

Finally, we spotlight the first-generation Daytona ref. 6239, which followed the “Pre-Daytona.” While many Daytona models feature dials without the Daytona name, the 6239 holds a special place in the hearts of replica watch aficionados. Initially launched without the Daytona text, the watch was introduced alongside Rolex’s sponsorship of the 24 Hours of Daytona race.

The 6239 showcases a 37mm stainless steel case and is available with various dial options, including black, white, and silver. The clean aesthetic of the non-Daytona dials enhances its connection to the Pre-Daytona.
